rigid socket
#

we can still sit here and roast Owen for being a filthy Light Mode user

hasty kernel
#

I am doing what science has proven to be better

#

Y'all are just like smokers, people trying to look cool while hurting themselves

rigid socket
#

I use dark mode because light mode hurts like hell

rain mortar
#

I also use f.lux, so don't know how much that changes things.

rigid socket
#

same

hasty kernel
#

If Light mode hurts like hell

#

Your brightness is too high

#

Way too high

#

Though its surprising dark mode doesnt hurt your eyes just the same

chilly moss
#

why is dark mode worse for your eyes?

plain flare
#

i have no idea

#

unless by dark we're talking high contrast

hasty kernel
#

Ok so Im not an optician, so I dont know the exact science

rain mortar
#

I'd be interested to see the study where this info came from

rigid socket
#

it's the high contrast that causes eye strain, not the bright colors

#

or lack thereof

plain flare
#

i can see a way to understanding dark mode being worse IF and only IF you are trying to look at it in broad daylight

hasty kernel
#

Nah, its not contrast

#

Its specifically black on white being better than white on black

plain flare
#

dark mode should never be white on black

hasty kernel
#

It has to do with your iris

rigid socket
#

it's not white on black though, it's white on gray

plain flare
#

it should be gray on darker gray

#

or something close

hasty kernel
#

Thats the same unfortunatelly

#

Unfortunately

rain mortar
#

Discord is light grey on dark grey

rigid socket
#

white on black is just as piercing and headache inducing as black on white

rain mortar
#

I find white on black worse than black on white

#

But grey is pretty gentle, in my experience

plain flare
#

ill give you white on black being bad

#

if anyone uses that as a dark mode they are doing it wrong

hasty kernel
#

Again, it doesnt really get much better when its light grey on dark grey

rigid socket
#

like Youtube's dark mode sucks

hasty kernel
#

A little, yes, but the problem of the background causing your iris to widen, in turn leading to a constant attempt of the eye to refocus leading to eye strain remains

#

This is basically the abridged version of how it works, because again, not an optician

rain mortar
#

I'm not sure that takes into account brightness settings either way, though

plain flare
#

i get migraines if there is too much white negative space

hasty kernel
#

Actually it does

rigid socket
#

it also depends on your viewing environment I guess

hasty kernel
#

But the point is, lower brightness

#

But black on white

rigid socket
#

if you're sitting in the dark, go with dark mode

rain mortar
#

Do you have a link to this study/article?

hasty kernel
#

Bauer and Cavonius, 1980, thats as much as I remember

plain flare
#

lowering brightness, and not using actual black on actual white, can be easy on the eyes

#

its what ebook readers used for that reason

hasty kernel
#

Well, yes

plain flare
#

but i cant do that, because i often have very color sensitive work that i cant play with the brightness too much

hasty kernel
#

Proper black on proper white isnt optimal either

#

But its still better

rigid socket
#

that study didn't have to do with eye strain at all

#

it was about viewing accuracy

#

black on white causes the iris to tighten and focus, and inverting causes it to widen and let more light in

#

consequently causing blurring

hasty kernel
#

It also covered strain

rain mortar
#

Looks like strain is Section 3.3, just starting to read it now

hasty kernel
#

Unless Ive got the wrong one?

rain mortar
hasty kernel
#

There were 3 big studies

plain flare
#

dang thats a really old study

hasty kernel
#

Well, yeah

#

Our eyes havent evolved in 40 years

plain flare
#

and coincidentally, hard to read on my monitor

#

lol

hasty kernel
#

A lot of subjects have studies that are old and still used just because noone could disprove them

#

Basically how science works

rigid socket
#

most of this wouldn't change if revisited today

plain flare
#

I can only state how its impacting me

#

just the white pdf bg is painful

hasty kernel
#

Thats definitely odd

plain flare
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

hasty kernel
#

Anyway, its late, I have to sleep

rigid socket
#

from what this is saying

rain mortar
#

G'night UNOvven

hasty kernel
#

Ill make like AC/DC tomorrow and be back in black

rigid socket
#

older useers should stick to light mode

#

higher eye strain and much lower visual acuity in dark mode

#

younger users have no change however

hasty kernel
#

In strain, yes

rain mortar
#

I didn't read it super thoroughly, but it seems they only tested positive and negative polarity (in that study) which would be white on black and black on white

hasty kernel
#

In accuracy, still changed

rigid socket
#

visual acuity is much higher for both demographics in light mode yes

plain flare
#

you also have to consider environments

hasty kernel
#

So next time before you try to talk smack because someone isnt using dark mode

plain flare
#

like my room isn't super bright

hasty kernel
#

Tread lightly

plain flare
#

dim lighting with a screen that has flat white bg is painful

rigid socket
#

I keep my screen relatively dim anyways because chronic migraines

plain flare
#

ill have to research more as im not prepared, but the whole reason Riot uses the darker bg on the boards platform (with an admittedly ugly brown text) was due to the entire UX department citing studies

#

which may have been a function of gamers typically having dimmer room lighting for all i know

chilly briar
#

source?

plain flare
#

source for?

#

the riot thing?

#

I helped code it 😛

#

but i wasnt on ux so that was their area

hasty kernel
#

I hate that boards are dark now

#

Older forums were much nicer

plain flare
#

i protested to the brown font

#

regardless of science

rigid socket
#

is that why the older version was this weird brown-on-tan design?

hasty kernel
#

It doesnt have a brown font

plain flare
#

it did

#

still does

rigid socket
#

they were brown for a while, not sure when they shifted to light gray

plain flare
#

just pulled it up

rigid socket
#

the links are brown, the regular text looks light to me

plain flare
#

its tan

#

very slightly

#

rgb(213, 209, 194)

#

255 is max on rgb

rigid socket
#

I'm probably not the best person to ask about color coordination

plain flare
#

it used to be a lot darker

rigid socket
#

it all looks the same to me

plain flare
#

worth noting i dont actually have a dog in the fight over whatever science there is out there on dark vs light

#

just have my own preference

rigid socket
#

same

plain flare
#

actually i think i still have the boards platform in my repo folder im going to see what the color was haha

hasty kernel
#

Science is absolute

#

All should kneel before Science

rigid socket
#

then again everything I do fits the same aesthetic as dark mode

plain flare
#

tell that to the people that go back and forth on the health of dark chocolate every year

#

😄

rigid socket
#

christ I own 7 identical gray tshirts

hasty kernel
#

I mean all chocolate isnt terribly healthy

#

Dark Chocolate is just the best chocolate

#

Light chocolate is passable

#

White chocolate it rubbish

plain flare
#

those were the original css values for boards

#

(well, after they switched to dark mode)

rigid socket
#

Wheat

plain flare
#

so they've definitely lightened it up a bit

rain mortar
#

Sounds enlightened

plain flare
#

🤔

hasty kernel
#

They went to the dark side

plain flare
#

still mumbles at uno using lightmode anyways

#

im 35 so i can be set in my ways

#

😄

hasty kernel
#

Wow, youre old

plain flare
#

I try!

#

someone's gotta be

hasty kernel
#

Surprisingly not the oldest guy I know online

plain flare
#

im not sure if that makes me feel better or worse

#

on one hand the record is gone

#

on the other yay?

rain mortar
#

If it makes you feel any better, you're nowhere near the oldest person I know online

sharp grail
#

It’s not like people just unplug their router once they hit 30 yknow

plain flare
#

i demand all 30+ year olds besides me unplug their router

#

and get back to yelling at kids on the lawn

sharp grail
#

it’s not surprising that people are still on the internet past that age lol

rain mortar
#

sniffles as he heads to the router

sharp grail
#

But frosthaven, the supergiants!

plain flare
#

😄

hasty kernel
#

Its less that

#

And more that, by nature of the forums I meet people in online

#

Their age tends to be skewed much lower

plain flare
#

there would be more if the internet were more prevalent back then

hasty kernel
#

Since yknow

#

Few people over 30 play stuff like League or GW2

#

Actually, probably not true on GW2

sharp grail
#

probably not true on league as well

plain flare
#

I do think that this generation onward it won't be strange to see elderly people playing games

#

already a few

sharp grail
#

Too many people play league for it to not have a huge community of 30+ year olds

hasty kernel
#

They actually released the demographics at some point

#

I dont remember the exact numbers though

plain flare
#

years ago it was like

woven sapphire
#

Kids these days

plain flare
#

26 avg

hasty kernel
#

Below 15%

plain flare
#

no idea what it is now

woven sapphire
#

BACK IN MY DAY

hasty kernel
#

Probably considerably lower

woven sapphire
#

waves cane

sharp grail
#

that’s still a lot of people

hasty kernel
#

Since 85% are between 16 and 30, and I know that there was a decent chunk below 16

sharp grail
#

There are a lot of league players

hasty kernel
#

If I had to guess, Id say 5%?

rigid socket
#

geez I'm only 25 and I feel like an old geezer playing league

plain flare
#

you were right at the most saturated age

hasty kernel
#

Wow, youre older than I am

sharp grail
#

You don’t need to guess, if it was released online it’s still online

hasty kernel
#

I guess you lose your wit with age

rigid socket
#

"You kids don't know how good you have it"

sharp grail
#

how old are you

hasty kernel
#

Its more that 15% is everyone below 16 and above 30

#

And they never specified which percentage is made up by either half

rigid socket
#

"Back in my day junglers didn't get a leash and they were happy about it"

hasty kernel
#

Uh ... 21 I think?

plain flare
#

oh man league talk haha

hasty kernel
#

Let me check

sharp grail
#

now I feel young

hasty kernel
#

Yeah, 21

rain mortar
#

All you young'ns

plain flare
#

One thing about the internet and gaming communities though

#

play by the rules and age is almost not important

rigid socket
#

that and anyone who claims to be a child is an undercover FBI agent

hasty kernel
#

Funny thing is, among my friends Im the oldest

#

Nearly everywhere else Im among the youngest

sharp grail
#

I’m 19 so a bit younger

plain flare
#

heheh. the internet used to be free

#

that was fun

hasty kernel
#

Used to be?

sharp grail
#

I think I might be the second youngest of the mods but I’m not sure

hasty kernel
#

Ah, 19

#

The age where you think youve got it all figured out, before life dropkicks you and scuttles away

sharp grail
#

lol

rain mortar
#

I think the median age of mods on the server I moderate is like, somewhere in the 30's

rigid socket
#

life scuttles away after dropkicking you?

plain flare
#

thats the big secret - nobody has anything figured out ever

#

people just get better at fronting

sharp grail
#

What kind of 19 year old thinks they have it all figured out

woven sapphire
#

I have everything figured out

rain mortar
#

A lot of them...

hasty kernel
#

Most actually

woven sapphire
#

But I’m thousands of years old

rigid socket
#

I thought it was normal to keep stomping on your ribs while you're down

north hamlet
#

A bad 19 year old

hasty kernel
#

Most 15 year olds think they have it all figured out

#

God 15 year olds are twats

north hamlet
#

Indeed

rain mortar
#

Fake it 'til you make it, and keep on faking it until you die

rigid socket
#

right?

sharp grail
#

like are y’all speaking from experience? did you think you had it all figured out at any age?

rigid socket
#

oh absolutely

plain flare
#

I had it all figured out once at around 27

hasty kernel
#

Yes

sharp grail
#

am I an exception? lol

rain mortar
#

I definitely am guilty of that in my teenage years

rigid socket
#

I was the world's most enlightened teenager

hasty kernel
#

I mean hell, I thought Id finish my bachelor in 6 semesters

#

Boy was I wrong

plain flare
#

man when i was 20 i was in a bad relationship doing a job i hated and thinking thats all that life was

rigid socket
#

if I met 15 year old me right now It would take herculean effort to not put my head through a wall

north hamlet
#

When i was a teenager i figured out what i wanted in life

#

I wanted to be a NEET

woven sapphire
#

When I was a teenager I thought math was pretty great

sharp grail
#

damn

woven sapphire
#

Now I’m getting my masters in math

sharp grail
#

I’m jealous of all of you for even thinking you had stuff down at a point

woven sapphire
#

I’m not super mad at teenage me

hasty kernel
#

Math is pretty great

plain flare
#

well you have it down until you dont

#

life comes at you fast even when you're set

hasty kernel
#

Hardware sucks though

rain mortar
#

I can freely admit that I was Not A Good Person™ at times during my teenage years. Time and experience, friends

hasty kernel
#

I wish I could do Comp Sci without the hardware bits

rigid socket
#

same

sharp grail
#

I was an awful annoying child

#

You get better tho

hasty kernel
#

Gimme more theoretical Comp Sci instead

north hamlet
#

I'm still an annoying child

#

Much less awful though

hasty kernel
#

Oh I used to be awful

rigid socket
#

heavily overcompensated for being bullied mercilessly as a grade schooler by being a complete psychopath

hasty kernel
#

Nowadays the main problem people have with me is my puns

rigid socket
#

"They won't bully me if they think I'm insane"

hasty kernel
#

And even then its not really a problem

plain flare
#

thats a good trait imo puns make the world go round

rain mortar
#

That's not a problem at all, UNOvven

plain flare
#

people might groan but they know they like it

rigid socket
#

And nobody will talk to you either, genius

hasty kernel
#

My 2 nicknames are "the punisher" and "Ivan the terrible" as a result

rigid socket
#

Ivan the terrible

hasty kernel
#

Note: my name isnt Ivan, but everyone calls me Ivan

plain flare
#

sorry to hear that ivan

hasty kernel
#

Eh, my real name is a pain to pronounce in english

#

Which is why Im called Ivan

woven sapphire
#

I know that feel

hasty kernel
#

I tried to make em go for Viktor, but that didnt work out

rain mortar
#

A N D S O I T S H A L L B E I V A N

woven sapphire
#

Though I don’t go by Ivan

sharp grail
#

my real name is a pain to pronounce to anyone

#

I am an eldritch being

plain flare
#

even my mom calls me frosthaven so 🤔

woven sapphire
#

My name only really works in French, too many syllables for people to put up with in English

tardy anchor
#

on ur birth cedrtif

hasty kernel
#

So she is giving you the cold shoulder?

tardy anchor
#

eyy

plain flare
#

pffffffffft

#

i lied though so its ok

hasty kernel
#

I trusted you

rain mortar
#

I am a ghost, and have long since lost my true name

plain flare
#

fair

hasty kernel
#

I do kind of miss being 19 tho tbh

sharp grail
#

you have to legally change your name to wightfyre

hasty kernel
#

Where I wasnt worried about university while doing too little to be reasonably able to claim that Ive done my best

#

Where I was still sure I was Ace and perfectly happy with it

plain flare
#

I don't miss 19 at all. I was always a "good" person, but boy did i make mistakes

rigid socket
#

geez I haven't even tried to go to uni

hasty kernel
#

On the other hand, GW2 got better

woven sapphire
#

Uni is hype

#

It never ends, but it’s hype

hasty kernel
#

I like university, but I do too little

#

Way too little

woven sapphire
#

They let me study math, like, all the time

hasty kernel
#

Dont even have a reason to

rigid socket
#

I dropped out of HS at 16, then just took the exit exam a year later

hasty kernel
#

Just think "yeah, Ill work on it later"

#

And then I ... dont

woven sapphire
#

High school tried to limit the number of math courses I could take

hasty kernel
#

Procrastination sucks

rigid socket
#

started doing construction work at 19

woven sapphire
#

Uni is like “go nuts”

hasty kernel
#

Sounds like solid work

plain flare
#

interestingly enough i learned more my first year out of school than my entire time in

rigid socket
#

it was yeah

#

good pay

hasty kernel
#

Gave you a good foundation

rigid socket
#

ended up running out of work quickly though, nobody wanted to hire someone as young as I was

#

settled into live in maintenance work for my apartment complex for the next 5 years

#

and let me tell you

hasty kernel
#

But yeah, I wish I was still comfortably Ace

rigid socket
#

worst mistake of my life

woven sapphire
#

55 years is a long time

hasty kernel
#

There was something nice in that

rain mortar
#

I prefer that time period pre-edit Kappa

hasty kernel
#

Now Im confused, unsure, but also not willing to actually figure it out

rigid socket
#

nothing wrong with maintenance work in itself

plain flare
#

get stuck?

rigid socket
#

never do it where you live

hasty kernel
#

So I just kinda brush it under the rug and hope I dont think about it too much

rigid socket
#

I was supposed to get weekends off, but really you're on call 24/7

plain flare
#

what kind of work do you do now, or want to be doing?

rigid socket
#

residents just walk up to you while you're eating or in the middle of the night to tell you they need something inane fixed

woven sapphire
#

That sounds awful

rigid socket
#

I quit a few days ago, moving out of state

rocky halo
#

hi greetings

woven sapphire
#

Also can you fix my drawer the handle fell off kthx

plain flare
#

hey bowser 😄

rigid socket
#

my hopes are to get a job doing wildlife rehabilitation

plain flare
#

oh thats sick

rain mortar
#

That sounds fun, Doc!

hasty kernel
#

I still want to become a video game developer, part of why I studied comp sci

#

But then I had an epiphany

rigid socket
#

one of the only perks of my job was being the guy everyone brought injured animals to

hasty kernel
#

All the good studios are in places I never want to move to

plain flare
#

I spent my entire life getting into and working in the industry only to leave it and take a huge pay cut barely scraping by and being happier

rigid socket
#

then I realized after a few incidents that I was at my happiest while nursing animals

plain flare
#

i may still do some indie work yet

#

who knows

hasty kernel
#

Id probably do indie if I could

#

But yeah, most studios are in the US

#

And aint no way in hell Im gonna move to the US

rigid socket
#

Stay far away from us

woven sapphire
#

Ubisoft has stuff going on in Montreal

#

But also is Ubisoft

rocky halo
#

quick question is there a mac version of this game?

plain flare
#

i will never, ever, work for another game studio.

sharp grail
#

working at any big company sounds soul sucking

rigid socket
#

yeah but Ubisoft is a festering canker on the arse of the industry

hasty kernel
#

There are some in Canada, yes

#

But unfortunately theyre all french

north hamlet
#

The canada one made child of light

#

That is a good game

woven sapphire
#

Hey man Montreal is pretty English

rigid socket
#

it's right next to the sphincter that EA moved into now actually

hasty kernel
#

Honestly, I do like the structure big companies have

woven sapphire
#

Though Quebec French is admittedly trash

plain flare
#

its steady, good pay typically uno

hasty kernel
#

Structure, relative order and so on

#

I dont care much for money

sharp grail
#

yeah child of light is fantastic, I’ve been wanting to play it again for a while but one of the enemies pisses me off so much that I just decide not to

#

every time

hasty kernel
#

Yknow that moment when you think about what youd do if you win a million dollars?

rigid socket
#

a Canadian friend of mine told me there's a saying in Canada

hasty kernel
#

My thought was "... I guess I could buy a house?"

rigid socket
#

"Except for Quebec"

rain mortar
#

is Canadian

#

That is very true @rigid socket

woven sapphire
#

Can confirm

north hamlet
#

The light gem system was a lot of fun

sharp grail
#

what other thought should you have honestly

hasty kernel
#

There is only one excessive thing Id ever want money for

#

And thats a huge organ to play classical music on

sharp grail
#

Other than buy a house and donate a bunch of it

hasty kernel
#

Like playing Tocatta e fugue in D minor

#

On an actual organ

#

Sounds 👌

rigid socket
#

well aren't you classy

woven sapphire
#

Paying off some of my student debt would be nice

sharp grail
#

well. I guess just a million is only enough for a house

plain flare
#

id probably just help my friends and family, never been one to hold on to a lot of money

sharp grail
#

houses are expensive

hasty kernel
#

Imagine having to spend thousands of dollars to study

north hamlet
hasty kernel
#

This post made by the europe gang

woven sapphire
#

Grad school is delightfully free

rigid socket
#

christ in California you're lucky if you can get a house for a million

hot karma
#

shakes fist

plain flare
#

hah somehow i traveled the world and found myself stuck in florida

hot karma
#

tbf I didn't go into debt putting myself through school so there's that

woven sapphire
#

Oh no

plain flare
#

humidity is a jerk

hasty kernel
#

I spend 240€ each semester to study, and I get unlimited access to public transport in a decent area for that time

woven sapphire
#

Do you need to be saved @plain flare

rigid socket
#

have you met Florida Man?

hasty kernel
#

Yay germany

plain flare
#

I AM florida man

rigid socket
#

he's my favorite anti-hero

plain flare
#

🤔

woven sapphire
#

I’m making money off of studying these days

#

It’s nice

plain flare
#

nah honestly its just my family is here

hasty kernel
#

Stipend?

woven sapphire
#

Yup

#

Covers most of my rent

plain flare
#

missed them when i was living in santa monica

hot karma
#

would be nice if my education made me any money 😫

hasty kernel
#

Im not productive enough to ever get a stipend unfortunately

rigid socket
#

What is it like to enjoy your family?

hasty kernel
#

Id probably have the talent, but I never had to work in school, so I never learned how to

woven sapphire
#

The strat is to study the cool math where the money is 😛

plain flare
#

so i dont have anyone else to compare it to, but making a lot of money is a lonely place to be. never know who your real friends are, and things dont keep you happy for long.

woven sapphire
#

My thesis is like solid buzzwords

hot karma
#

but cool math sucks and I don't have the head for it

hasty kernel
#

Whats your thesis on?

woven sapphire
#

I will fight you

#

I’m researching quantum-secure blockchain!

plain flare
#

🤔

hot karma
#

wow buzzwords XD

hasty kernel
#

Oh, fascinating

plain flare
#

give it another 10 years and ai will be doing everything

woven sapphire
#

So blockchain on ordinary computers that is safe from quantum attacks

hasty kernel
#

We briefly covered that in cybersecurity

woven sapphire
#

My part time job is AI research, I’ve got all the angles covered

plain flare
#

👍

rigid socket
hasty kernel
#

Neural Nets, or some other kind of AI development?

woven sapphire
#

Neural nets! I’ve mostly been messing around with capsule networks lately

plain flare
#

well we already have ai that can build better cars than people, apparently

hasty kernel
#

Probably a lot of restrictions to get that result

woven sapphire
#

Cars are easier to build than people

#

To be fair

plain flare
#

wait we're talking about building people now?

#

i want in on this

hasty kernel
#

Though we do have a lot of progress in Neural Nets

#

I had a course last semester called Deep Learning for Natural Language Processing

#

Fun stuff

woven sapphire
#

😄

rigid socket
#

talk to Elon Musk about that, we'll finally get genetically engineered catgirls through him

woven sapphire
#

NLP is a joy

hasty kernel
#

Its fun

#

Its actually on my shortlist of potential jobs

#

That, video game designer and just regular old security IT

#

Unfortunatley the only way to make money with theoretical Comp Sci is being a professor

#

And Im not even remotely good enough to be one

plain flare
#

the first step to being good at something new is being not-good at something new

hasty kernel
#

Oh Im not-good at a lot of things

plain flare
#

so you've taken the first step in a lot of things

#

^_^

#

i want to be literally everything

#

kind of been all over the board

hasty kernel
#

Is your name, by any chance, jack?

rain mortar
#

All hail our omnipotent leader Frosthaven? Kappa

plain flare
#

grew up as an artist, moved to graphic design, then music, then engineering

#

nah im a bad example

#

I value truth and people over money and personal well being

woven sapphire
#

You should consider AI research as a field then

#

Since you can apply it to all of those things

#

The range in stuff you can do is a joy

#

I trained a bot to draw anime girls!

plain flare
#

i think my next step is probably going to be 3d modeling, which would allow me to solo an indie project just to say i did it

hasty kernel
#

There is a good chance Ill end up in that field

woven sapphire
#

And one to predict the stock market 😛

plain flare
#

and then i can die happy

hasty kernel
#

Just because game designer is looking more and more unlikely each day

#

Ill probably just do it as a hobby

plain flare
#

oh yeah the indie market is so saturated atm

#

there are probably tons of amazing games that nobody will ever hear about

hasty kernel
#

And big studios are located in rubbish spots

#

Yeah

#

I wanted to make a MMBN-inspired game, right?

#

I already knew about 3 that were being made

#

I found out there are 5 more

plain flare
#

what was the last metric on just steam alone like

40-50 games a day being released?

granted there are other problems on steam, but still

rain mortar

At least that much, I think

You basically need to get lucky with a streamer or youtuber

its a lot like bands were

everyone flocks to a dream until its so saturated it cant fit anyone else without a ton of luck

Speaking of bands

Ive made a hobby of collecting good band names from random spots

Like our GPS sometimes shows (in german naturally) "Road without a name" for roads that it doesnt know

#

Thats a good indie-rock band name

Redirecting from the off-topic conversation in #h1-story-discussion to here, but if you've never encountered it before, kalsarikännit is a fun word. It means The feeling when you are going to get drunk home alone in your underwear – with no intention of going out

supple terrace
#

I have never had that feeling, but I don't drink.

hasty kernel
#

Thats a very finnish word

#

Same

supple terrace
#

Mine's meds and the fact booze tastes like burning to me.

hasty kernel
#

And Im a german with russian heritage

#

I just dont like any state that causes my behaviour to change

supple terrace
#

Like, it's a running joke among my friends that they won't be able to taste the alcohol, I take one sniff and it's like "yep, booze."

rain mortar
#

Nothing wrong with that

hasty kernel
#

I have enough fear of losing control as is

supple terrace
#

See, I rely on some to change my behavior for the better. Though it's less 'changes it' and more of 'provides what I need to focus, blah blah etc'

hasty kernel
#

Ill probably need to get meds at some point

#

Im like 95% sure Ive got some kind of Anxiety Disorder

supple terrace
#

And lack the tools to center yourself/get used to that stuff?

hasty kernel
#

More that it takes a lot of effort to get everything in order, and Im terrible with focusing effort

supple terrace
#

Aaaaah.

#

That might also be related to attention related disorders!

hasty kernel
#

Plausible, but probably not the case

#

I do occasionally have periods of extreme focus on one specific thing

velvet void
#

I'm the same way, don't like drinking and never done any drugs because no I do not like my changes my state of mind

hasty kernel
#

They just come and go

supple terrace
#

(Please note, I am not a doctor, just someone whose family is Used to This Stuff.)

hasty kernel
#

Sometimes Ill spend hours on end working on the same thing, only to not touch it for days if not weeks afterwards

supple terrace
#

... Uh, that might actually be ADHD, especially if it's related to things you like?

#

Like, I do take an anti-anxiety medication, but it's only one part of the equation that keeps me relatively calm. Makes things a little less sensory heck, especially in crowds or around noises I can't handle without earplugs/place to retreat to/water.
Another part of it is a stimulant because I do have ADHD.

hasty kernel
#

It can be anything

velvet void
#

I was diagnosed with ADD put on Adderall but I stop taking it after a month

hasty kernel
#

Not just things I like

supple terrace
#

Hm, interesting.

hasty kernel
#

Its probably just an odd trait I picked up over the years that I need to unlearn

supple terrace
#

It took me until I was an adult to remain consistent with vyvanse. It helps a lot, at least.

hasty kernel
#

Well, things used to be worse

#

I had horrible anger management issues

supple terrace
#

(The anti-depressant keeps the whole system moving better, since it means I actually sleep and get energy back and not feel emotionally bleeped.)

hasty kernel
#

Until I lost the ability to be angry

supple terrace
#

Oh man, anger issues.

hasty kernel
#

Still not sure when or how that happened

supple terrace
#

Age and time.

#

And likely might be related to hormones.

hasty kernel
#

I was playing League while my internet was going up and down like mad

#

And I had the epiphany of "wait, Im only annoyed, not angry"

supple terrace
#

So less ability to get angry and more emotional intelligence get.

hasty kernel
#

Result being that instead of yelling and hitting the wall, I just kept making sarcastic remarks

rain mortar
#

Mmmmm, sarcasm, my true friend

supple terrace
#

Sarcasm is how my dad hugs.

hasty kernel
#

It is unfortunate when you become really annoyed and fall into a pit of unsincere remarks

#

A sarchasm if you will

rain mortar
#

I can relate to that, I think, and I would agree that time/hormones/emotional intelligence are likely factors

supple terrace
#

BLEEP YOU! 😄

hasty kernel
#

Probably

#

I am only 21, so my brain chemistry shouldnt stop changing for another 4 years

supple terrace
#

So young.

hasty kernel
#

Usually Im the oldest guy when talking to folks, being the young one is nice for a change

velvet void
#

My psych teacher used to say the kids under 20 were basically brain damaged given how underdeveloped our brains are comparatively

rain mortar
#

Thinking back to those years, that sounds about right squirtdevious

Yeaaaah.

Geez, I was an idiot.

Anyway

#

Im just glad I dont have depression

#

... probably

velvet void
#

I realized I was an idiot very young which caused me to be very self conscious of everything I did

rain mortar
#

It's hard to diagnose yourself

hasty kernel
#

Like Ive heard low energy periods could be indicative of depression

supple terrace
#

Shay, you are still young.

rain mortar
#

I've often thought that I might have depression, or any number of other things

hasty kernel
#

As is lack of motivation

supple terrace
#

Unovven, YEP.

hasty kernel
#

Buuut its also just as likely a case of insomnia and procrastination

cerulean cloak
#

i know i know lol

hasty kernel
#

And I know Ive got those in spades

supple terrace
#

But depression can still cause those too.

cerulean cloak
#

procrastination isn't a condition

hasty kernel
#

Well I should go see a psychologist at some point

#

Whats germanies free healthcare for if not to be used

supple terrace
#

At the very least, it can let you talk things out.

#

Look, I'm 30.

rain mortar
#

Delicious free healthcare, how I cherish thee

supple terrace
#

It's so weird being the oldest.

rain mortar
#

Free with an asterisk of course, it still gets funding from you one way or another

#

We're the same age, Pundora 😉

Jeez, look at these old geezers

velvet void

Just don't get a broken leg, duh

#

Easy

supple terrace
#

highfives wightfyre.

hasty kernel
#

Then again I semi-regularly talk to people who are older

supple terrace
#

Same.

velvet void
#

I've been the youngest my whole life so nothing feels different

supple terrace
#

Like, my two best friends, one is two years older than me, the other is about four years younger.

#

Give it time, Furi.

hasty kernel
#

I think my best friends are both a whole bit younger

velvet void
#

I also looked the youngest

hasty kernel
#

They were still in school when I was in uni

#

Well, started my second year of uni, more precisely

supple terrace
#

I made friends with my two while we all were in college.

hasty kernel
#

Then again I struggle to remember my own age, so Im not 100% on it

rain mortar
#

I can relate, when I was in my late teens/early twenties most of my friends were in their late twenties/early thirties. Just better personality compatibility, I guess ¯_(ツ)_/¯

supple terrace
#

Yeah, I know that feel.

hasty kernel
#

Well, in the age of ye old internet

velvet void
#

I was doing a freshman class during my senior year and none of the kids there knew I was a senior until the teacher told them halfway through

hasty kernel
#

Age matters less when making acquaintances

velvet void
#

I just look young

rain mortar
#

Very much so, UNOvven

hasty kernel
#

Also I dont actually know many people at my uni

#

Mainly because Im not very often physically present at it

#

Because its a 2 hour drive and lectures are either recorded or at 8 in the morning

rain mortar
#

I don't do great with getting to know people IRL

supple terrace
#

Furi, I know that feel.

#

Like, I had people think I was still in high school when I was 25 and had graduated university.

velvet void
#

Oof

hasty kernel
#

Oh ever since I became less of a twat I had a real easy time getting to know people

#

I just rarely meet new people

#

And even when I do, its rarely anything lasting

#

Mainly because I hardly ever follow up, and noone I meet does either

supple terrace
#

Yeah, that's one nice thing about the internet and making it easier to reach out.

woven sapphire

If I could grow one I would 😛

velvet void

My brown heritage doesn't let me grow a decent beard

hasty kernel

Pain in the butt to maintain it though

velvet void
#

Just scraggly hair

#

So I just stay clean shaven

supple terrace
#

My PCOS makes for a few dark hairs, but they are stiff and annoying, so I pluck them.

rain mortar
#

I have an abiding hatred for shaving, so the most I do unless I have a good reason is buzz down to stubble

woven sapphire
#

It’s problematic when I’m trying to teach my students and they think I’m one of their classmates x.x

hasty kernel
#

The problem is my beard gets unkempt real bad if I dont maintain it

Which when combined with my choice of practical but not very fashionable clothing makes me look like a hobo

rain mortar

I prefer cats for snuggling up with. A cat in your lap while you work? Great

#

A dog? Maybe not

hasty kernel

Mainly because dogs dont like me much

UnOvven, understandable!

Cats on the other hand are much better

hasty kernel

#

Theyre cute, but they are unbelievably dumb

supple terrace
#

Sort of like how people think rats are dirty when they are very clean?

hasty kernel
#

I mean at least with that it makes sense since rats in the wild are disease carriers

supple terrace
#

Everything carries disease.

velvet void
#

Because theyre nocturnal and it's attributed to Nerds who stay up all night studying

velvet void
#

iirc

hasty kernel
#

Sure, but rats spread it more easily than most wild animals

rain mortar
#

The thing with rats carrying diseases is more that they carry parasites on them that have the disease and then transfer those to humans

supple terrace

^

hasty kernel

Thats a better way of putting it I suppose

velvet void

enter black plague

If it makes you feel better(?), when I moved this past summer the truck rental company "guaranteed" me a 15' moving truck, then called me like 3 days before I was supposed to pick it up to say that the people who had the truck I was supposed to be using hadn't returned it yet (before the weekend, I was supposed to pick it up after the weekend), and that all they had was a 10' truck. Better yet, it wasn't even in the same city, which is also part of their guarantee, but was in a city an hour's drive away. I had to take a cab to pick it up, I had no other means to get it. The stress that caused me... ugh

I'm sorry for your troubles with the move, believe me when I say I understand

lol reminds me of when I decided to drop everything and go to uni, I had a place of my own, 3 bedrooms etc and had to downsize my possessions to a single room. Took like a year to get rid of stuff and sell stuff, now I can move in a car load if I sell my furniture

#

Keeping it minimalistic since I'm moving around for the next few years

rigid socket
#

Thankfully I’m actually upsizing

chilly briar
#

it helped me work out what I really wanted in terms of my own space, what I had before that is never something I want again lol

rigid socket
#

I’ve been living out of one bedroom in my grandparents apartment for the last 6 years, haven’t even had room for a mattress

#

Now I’m moving in with some friends into a much bigger apartment and I can buy a bed now

chilly briar
#

I've moved probably about 7 times in the last 4 years lol

rain mortar
#

That is too much, Codex. Please stop

chilly briar
#

I'm moving again in august, then again in 2020 lol

rain mortar
#

Why do you do this to yourself? 🙃

chilly briar
#

price of freedom

rain mortar
#

Are they big moves, too? Or just short hops?

rigid socket
#

Technically I’ve moved 3 times in the last year

chilly briar
#

um, mixed

rigid socket
#

Once moving my grandparents out, once moving my uncle in

rain mortar
#

My last two moves were 1700 and 1300 km respectively, with 3 years in between. I am done with that for a while, I hope

chilly briar
#

spent a year in japan on a uni exchange, moved in november from near my uni to my parents farm for a few months to recover financially from uni, moving in august when my partner is back from their contract since we'll get our own place, then somewhere in europe in 2020

#

or maybe back to japan

#

haven't decided yet

rain mortar
#

Sounds exciting, anyway!

rigid socket
#

Just the thought of intercontinental moving is triggering a fight or flight response

rain mortar
#

Probably flight, what with the oceans

rigid socket
#

I’ll fight a shark, I don’t care

chilly briar
#

sharknado

#

moving overseas isn't that bad

#

unless you're into owning a lot of stuff

rigid socket
#

Give me a death the bards will sing of

tropic garden
#

the whole time i've been in japan i haven't bought anything i wanna keep for that exact reason lol

#

every time im like "wow life would be better with a microwave" i also think "but i'm leaving in 7 months so ehhhh"

candid sparrow
#

get the microwave

tropic garden
#

i have learned how to reheat and thaw many things using a frying pan.

#

also there is nowhere to put the microwave.

rigid socket
#

Speaking of Japan, I bought a kotatsu for the new place and honestly the thought of it is what’s been keeping me from collapsing so far

tropic garden
#

if i bought a microwave i'd have to buy another small shelf to put the microwave on too

rain mortar
#

Sounds like you need a microwave

candid sparrow
tropic garden
#

if only

#

gui, kotatsu are heavenly and will sap every bit of your productivity

#

once i turned mine on for the season, i stopped being able to do anything

chilly briar
#

I very rarely use a microwave, food tastes better reheated the old fashioned way lol

#

kotatsu are traps

#

the main thing I missed in Japan was an oven

#

luckily you can bake and slow cook stuff in a rice cooker easily enough

rigid socket
#

That’s pretty nifty

#

I’ll try to remember that

Hey, people reading this. You're awesome and I'm glad you're a part of this community. You all make me happy, and I'm glad we can all be here

Speaking of food... I packed my lunch for tomorrow and it is Neat.

#

Leftover tortinelli and meatballs, a small mixed green salad with feta, a vinaigrette with garlic, herbs de provence olive oil, chopped black olives, gremolata, and balsamic vinegar, brownies, a kind bar, and these weird dried broad beans.

rain mortar
#

That is an impressive lunch! My lunch for tomorrow is two samosas that I will eat cold, and if I'm still hungry I have some mixed nuts that I keep in my lunch bag 😆

supple terrace
#

Neat! And in my defense, it's all leftover stuff. 😛

rain mortar
#

I love leftovers for lunch, that's just too much stuff for my lunch-time conditions. I usually eat sitting on the floor of a half-finished house or in the work van 😛

supple terrace
#

Aaaah, okay, point.

#

I have a desk job and I'm prone to snacking/having different things.

#

Like, the pasta and meatballs are in a little bento container, and the salad is separate from the dressing.

rain mortar
#

I was the same when I had a desk job, so I get it friendly

supple terrace
#

I've also opted for packing stuff for breakfast before in my lunchbox, which is nice.

#

I've found I don't like fully toasted bread for sandwiches, I prefer to shove two slices into one toaster slot, flip it so both sides are even, separate the bread, then put the spread on the toasted side before putting it together.

Pro strats

supple terrace
#

It's so good with peanut butter and honey.

rain mortar
#

Mmmm, peanut butter and honey is good stuff

supple terrace
#

Or peanut butter and nutella.

rain mortar
#

Eh, I can take it or leave it on that. This will sound weird after the previous comment, but too sweet 😛

supple terrace
#

No worries, my family doesn't like nutella and to be pedantic...

#

I prefer a specific chocolate hazelnut spread that is not as sweet.

#

And has chunks of hazelnut in it.

rain mortar
#

I've made my own chocolate-hazelnut spread before and it's quite good

#

Fairly easy, too

woven sapphire
#

Nutella is my main source of sustenance

#

Nutella on saltines is the breakfast of champions

rain mortar
#

Leftover dinner is the breakfast of champions 😛

supple terrace
#

Heee.

#

Water is the breakfast of champions.

rain mortar
#

I don't eat breakfast very often, though

woven sapphire
#

My sweet tooth is all of my teeth

supple terrace
#

(I'm usually not hungry for like, four or five hours after waking up.)

woven sapphire
#

So the sweetness is something I enjoy greatly

supple terrace
#

Oh, you want a really rich and delicious sandwich?

#

Grilled nutella and brie.

woven sapphire
#

You have my attention

rain mortar
#

It depends on the day... Some days I'm pretty hungry, but others not so much. Lunch and dinner are my eating times

woven sapphire
#

Breakfast is important~~

woven sapphire
#

Mmmm

rain mortar
#

I'm not enough of a morning person to get up early enough to have breakfast before work

supple terrace
#

Breakfast is important but again, I'm not hungry until like... noon.

rain mortar
#

I usually get up at 6:30ish, make coffee, and then am out the door to start work at 7

woven sapphire
#

I just make breakfast at work

#

Bring a bagel with me and toss it in the office toaster

supple terrace
#

I start hitting the snooze at 5:30 and then leave the house at 6:30 and get to work at 7 am. :B

#

I'm so picky with bagels. T_T

woven sapphire
#

Same

#

Went on a trip a few weeks ago

#

Bought three dozen bagels there

#

All to bring home

#

My freezer is completely full of bagels

Did someone mention
