how do you deal with like. hyperfocus when it actually gets harmful. i feel like people don’t talk about how bad it is to spend all night doing one activity because time suddenly doesn’t exist (source did thath

it's not perfect, but it can stop the worst of it. I still lose nights to it sometimes, but less often than I used to

absolutely. Another thing that helped when I was in college (and before that to a degree) was some herbal tea blends. I'm not a caffeine person, but I had a couple blends that really helped with alertness, and another that helped with falling asleep, so I would use those to either help induce hyperfocus or ensure that I didn't fall into it

but really genuinely a huge part of managing it is self-awareness. When I realize I'm starting to spin my wheels, or spiral, or lose time, I switch to running my "shortcuts", which is basically something to ensure that whatever decision needs to happen will happen as quickly and as simply as possible. Not easy to develop, it's been a few years of active thought plus, y'know, my whole life with ADHD and learning to handle it.

So like, if I'm struggling to decide what to do for food, I have a few "default meals" I can always make, either a store-bought frozen meal or something super simple I stick in the microwave or air fryer.

If I'm spinning before moving onto a task of some sort, I figure out the smallest possible first step and just Do It, with as little thought as possible. Builds momentum.

And if I'm losing time, I get up and move somewhere else - I might start spinning and then need to refocus, but at least I'm not Stuck in whatever I was hyperfocusing on.

(also, caution with having tea directly before bed, usually good to have it enough before that it mostly passes through your system. If you always wake up and need to use the bathroom really badly, it might be impacting your sleep quality)

[related anecdote, not directly replying] one of my highlights from this past year was learning how to cook fried rice - which, yes, the basics for it is relatively simple, and that's where I started. But I'm at a point now where I'm basically filling my wok with tons of stuff so I can't even flip it anymore (doubles as an arm workout though!). Leftovers are a godsend for the 2-4 days they last before I finish them

also, rice in general. Fantastic. Almost anything you can make into a sandwich, you can also do with rice, and you can do even more things on top of that

(I haven't tried PB&J rice and don't plan on it. But like. Cheese + meat + bread rice? Meal. Cheese + beans + sauce + tortilla rice? Meal)

I'm still disappointed because my go-to breakfast for literally years (like, 5+ years) were these frozen taquitos I'd stick in the toaster oven. And then they changed the recipe a little and they had noticeably less filling than they used to and the texture was just terrible

these days I don't have a great routine for food, but I'm better about eating more regularly. So sometimes I'll have some sort of egg meal, sometimes it'll be leftovers, sometimes it'll be something random thrown together, but I'm usually at least having something

What I do is set a goal for myself. I pick a thing to practice, a frequency, and I fit it in whenever I'm able. For example, in high school, I set the goal of drawing at least one bust a day. I made them as detailed as I wanted and could fit into my free time, and the result is that I got really good at drawing busts

If you do it like that, I also recommend the caviot that the drawings have to be as unique from each other as you can get. That way you don't just get good at drawing the same, or very similar things, but intsead get good at a range of that thing

I wanted to shared a little small thing that makes me quite pround.
I was watching an english tv show without the subtitles (nor in my native language or english) and I understand everything without any struggle.
That means a lot for me, after being kinda of ashamed at my english lectures at university.
Like, I literally cried and was so resent to this language that I avoided anything related - no hearing without subtitles, no reading. I was afraid of writing anything, any short essay or comments before checking anything five times at least with 3 differents translator.
So, I'm kinda pround of myself and glad that I can use this language again without feeling bad, worthless or nervous. <3

Erin is a mouse I created a few years ago, originally for a D&D campaign. She's since grown well beyond that, into quite a few other adventures and even other RPG systems
-# (I will happily ramble at length about her D&D build - it's one of my favorites of all time, extremely versatile, and allows me to do basically whatever I want with her for one-shots)
Also, important point of clarity: she's 3 feet tall

After a bit, I realized I was resonating with her a liiiiitle bit more than usual with my TTRPG characters , and at this point it would be reasonable to describe her as my fursona

The emotes are twofold - the first, and simpler one, is I just like her as a character and as my 'sona, so it's fun to have her face all over the place Many of them are personalized or more vibrant versions of other emotes, like for 🥰 or for 🫡
-# the dab emote specifically is also a reference to a meme from an earlier D&D campaign, with my 9-year-old dragonborn bard Saprax

The other, more involved reason, is I find linguistics, especially text-based communication, fascinating. Historically, I wasn't much of an emoji person, especially when I can use emoticons instead (I still use ^.^ and variations of >:3c a lot). But with custom emotes, I can convey very specific messages through a combination of visual language and emote naming
-# For example, I have both and , as well as and , which have different meanings but overlapping visuals
-# Also consider the difference between and - similar emotions, but the visual language carries a bit more meaning
-# I also recognize that many people don't actually read emote names, which hampers it somewhat, but overall it's proven extremely effective compared to plain text

This doesn't mean the emotes completely solve communication clarity - I make heavy use of tone indicators in a lot of my conversations. (<playful> but not this one! Wait...)

Some of them are in-jokes () or meme references (). I'm also very pleased with , which is one of the ones where I've traded linguistic clarity for being absolutely hilarious (is she saying Yes? No? Evil? The answer is, It depends!)
