Every day, the painful reality that social media alogrithms, and news media before them, are purposefully designed to lull people into a state of perpetual anger and apathy at the same time is one I find harder and harder to ignore. At the same time, the effects of them on me as a person are constantly becoming more obvious.
I get it. We are constantly told that the world sucks. Between the existence of capitalism turning anything and everything into a machine to churn out profits and nothing more, wars, social inequality, economic inequality, oppression, climate change, and the worst scum this world can vomit out seeming to gain more and more of a foothold even in spaces where you used to enjoy hanging out
Amidst all of this though, and the way that we can't really interface with anyone we talk to on the internet outside of a completely anonymous text medium, we're constantly forgetting that we're all just people in the end, instead of an evil mass of blobs out to destroy anything and everything you love. That's what politicians are!
Being negative, being cynical, immediatly assuming the worst out of everyone and everything is just... easy. It doesn't require you to reflect, nor really doing anything, since "everyone else is just evil and out to get you anyway".
I think the value of trying to empathise with people, instead of dismissing anyone person who disagrees with you as lazy, stupid, evil or all three, has been completely lost in the context of modern internet culture, and while I completely understand why, I can't help but find it a shame.
To anyone who can actually bring themselves to hope, to reach out to others and to not give up on anyone, I really wish you the best, without you, the world would be a worse place than it is. Well, actually, every one of us can be someone who can make a difference, even in our smaller scale.
Our individual actions may not solve the world's problems overnight, but it can have a domino effect on ever growing scale, so even just helping people out in your community, showing solidarity and kindness to those you interact with, in the real world or otherwise, is bound to do wonders. I don't mean just for others, either, I mean for yourself too. People should be the change that they want to see, and while part of me tells me that this is all gonna fall on deaf ears, that after reading this we'll all go back to our status quo... Another part of me can't help but hope. I really should feed this side of myself more, and so should you.

It's worth going to Times Square once, I wouldn't bother more than that unless it happens to be the fastest way (it won't be)
The Lego store is fantastic, as is the M&M store, yeah they're tourist traps but they're also worth walking through
There are dozens and dozens of "original NYC pizza" places, if you really want to know where to get pizza find a trustworthy local in whichever borough you happen to be in
Get an everything bagel with cream cheese and lox, I recommend Zabar's
Central Park is bigger than you realize, it's worth going
More general advice, but unless everything happens to be in walking distance, learn to use the subway asap, it's super important
