Hello to all the wonderful people here! I'm participating in my 6th year of Extra Life, and I have in past years played Bastion and Transistor for the first time during the 24-hour marathon. I have Pyre in my queue for this year's marathon, as I haven't played it yet. I'm expecting to enjoy it! Anything I should know about the game going into it? (No spoilers, obviously, please.)

The great thing about playing just 1-2 hours of the games in the marathon is that it's just enough to get me interested and hooked... so I set myself up for a lot of future gaming. That's how it was when I played Transistor the first time. I was honestly upset after 2 hours when it was time to move on to the next game -- I even skipped a snack break to keep playing. lol

I was streaming that year, so I was held accountable to my game queue schedule. I can cheat a little bit now that I'm unable to stream... but then I'll feel like I'm not giving the other games their fair shot. Heh.

I can't speak too much for Pyre, the gameplay didn't look appealing to me so I haven't played it. I played more Transistor than I did Bastion, even though I really enjoyed both.

I feel like all three games have different strengths. Bastion's strength is in its storytelling, through its (not entirely reliable) narration and gradual revealing of the background to the story, and its world feels quite fairytale (despite the different aesthetic). Transistor's strength is in its themes of agency, and its deliberate withholding of choice and background - you're only here to witness the end, and you can speculate on what came before, and I think that's really powerful. Pyre's strength is in its characters - the relationships they build with the Reader and each other, and giving the player abundant choices where Transistor withheld them. I think my playstyle best suits Transistor, but you couldn't make me pick a favourite game

I couldn't really get into Pyre. Think I got about 2 hours in and didn't have the drive to play anymore. Transistor is amazing but I couldn't play it again after the first playthrough. I just remember spamming the same combo until the end so I guess the combat didn't really satisfy me later in the game. I think I just like Bastion more because of the combat. It was simplistic and there wasnt a ton of enemy variety but I felt the weapon and skill combinations really made it enjoyable. I remember doing multiple playthroughs with different loadouts just to experience the different playstyle the weapon offered. That's just my personal take.

I think I'm just a more gameplay oriented kind of guy.

Here's one of the things I love about SGG: The tone of the setting. Many other, similar settings are relentlessly grimdark (i.e. Dark Souls, Elite Dangerous) where everyone's just plain out for themselves and will exploit whoever's necessary to thrive. SGG settings are far from utopias, heck, one starts with the planet exploding! Yet, there's always a light in them, whether is banter with your teammates in the Blackwagon or the steady growth of the Bastion. It's a really good way to show hope and humanity in the bleakest of situations.

I wanna talk about my love of supergiant for a sec, so get ready for a walk of text. Supergiants games are beyond words, I literally can’t put my love of these games into words. The first one I played was Transistor, and I was immediately hooked. I’ve played it through until level cap, done a god play through, listened to all the songs, even the beta ones, and I still love the game. So, I bought Bastion, thinking it would be a little rougher around the edges, but still good. I was amazed, how could a studio’s first game be so phenomenal, and why haven’t I seen anything about it before? A few years pass, and I see the trailer for pyre. I was ecstatic, I preordered it, because Supergiant is the only game studio I trust to deliver on the trailer. Pyre is such a masterpiece, I can’t even wrap my head around it. The gameplay, music, themes, characters, dialogue, art, animation, they all wrap together into a perfect game, I just can’t wait for what Supergiant does next, I know it will live up to everyone’s expectations, because Supergiant doesn’t cut corners, they deliver a quality product, not for 60 dollars, not with half the game behind paywalls, but they simply deliver you a beautiful game. Sorry for the rant, got a little carried away.

While I've never referred to them as that myself, I totally see where you're coming from, Alphadingo! As another example, three movies by British filmmaker Edgar Wright are collectively called "the Cornetto Trilogy" or "The Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy", even though they're set in different worlds, with different plots and characters. The ONLY thing tying them together are the lead actors in each film, the same director, and, believe it or not, ice cream [lol]. ^_^
