Makes sense, agreed!

I'm sure Manley has a little hat for it

I think it would be a bit weird if it was rite specific

#

So I liberated Pamitha which I'm happy for but also WHY DID ORALECH JUST INVITE HIMSELF IN THE BLACKWAGON???

lime mural
#

Well Archjustice really just came into my dreams just to call me a simpleton

trail talon
#

that's one of those moments which only really hits you the first time, when you don't expect it
"someone wants to talk to me? Let's see who it is!" :)
.....oh....... nervously tosses floating rock around

lime mural
#

I just stood there like uhhh may I help you???

"he seems to have something on his mind"
yeah.....i can see that

"you are nothing"
yep, so i've been told

lime mural

I was just waiting there like “ you done yet?”

#

Just minutes ago I though Oralech was about to beat me to death so this is nothing

trail talon
#

i'd just hoped i could get through to him.

#

it's funny: when he was there in the blackwagon, it seemed like it really was still his space. like i was the intruder

So true

prime dirge
#

Is there any consequence if you don't go into the wagon? Any player doing that misses one of the best spooks I know sneeb

spiral zealot
#

Wella little o think. Some dialogues allow for stat boosts but its mostly just story

#

Like ||not shaving rukey gives him extra hope||

prime dirge
#

It's story alright, but it's one of the bigger moments. On par with, near the end,
The Beyonder Crystal seeks ||you||

#

Both seem so innocent, you're with your pals so all is good, then you take a step inside and notice it's gulp time

spiral zealot
#

The beyonder crystal seeks (insert name here) is the most menacing thing because I just imagine from the blackwagon sandra seeking rukey and going "Rreeeeeader, I want yoouuuuuuurrrr doooooooog" super creepily

trail talon
#

you do get the option of being a more cold, aloof sort of reader, but i couldn’t imagine taking it

#

ok, but it’s also funny to imagine the reader grinning creepily at rukey as he walks in

prime dirge
#

Crystal glowing in his hands. A smirk impossible to hide. Eyes fixed on Rukey's

#

Hey Chum, you wanted s o m e t h i n g shadeembarassed

#

Aw. But they always come in robes already so they know what's up

spiral zealot
#

Imagine tizo just walks in and swallows the orb like some brids do where he throws it in the air catches it in his mouth then gulps it down

trail talon
#

tizo already knows about sandra, so the only reason he would eat the orb would be to annoy her

spiral zealot
#

Volf uses it as a paperweight and sandra just comes outside, "Bro your grammer is horrendous where did you learn to write"

trail talon
#

we already know that bertrude tries to plumb some historical info from this Primary Source

#

which is an instict i can appreciate, but sandra certainly doesn't

prime dirge
#

Did Bertrude ask historical questions to the Beyonders? That's news to me

trail talon
#

i'm pretty sure, yes. sandra comments about it at one point, after bertrude joins you

#

Or maybe Bertrude does? Or both, perhaps

prime dirge
#

Huh. Bertrude was my second-last liberated, so maybe that comes after

trail talon
#

i never liberated her. she had a good thing going with her business

#

i don't remember when that conversation happens, unfortunately. but i think she has been in your party for a while at that point

prime dirge
#

She had indeed. But the fireproof inks were too valuable to be left here 😦

#

Or maybe that happens a few chats after her Scribe trial. But I don't remember reading about it

trail talon
#

there is always a chance i could be remembering wrong. but

#

i'm pretty sure it happened

prime dirge
#

Speaking of Bertrude, there's a "sidequest" in which you can prove to...the other Bog that ||Yslach is not coming back soon||. But I don't remember finding anything resembling a sidequest for any character. How does this work?

trail talon
#

there are a few, depending on ||which triumvirates you choose to face after the first lib rite||
they're generally not super involved, and might be more for character than for a specific quest

spiral zealot
#

||yslach returns in our hearts if we believe hard enough||

trail talon
#

||if you face the pyrehearts, gilman wants to face them to prove his honour||
||if you face the dissidents, rukey wants to win the match to get rid of his debt to barker||
||mae and almer have an interaction if you face the fate again||

#

there may be others i'm forgetting

prime dirge
#

I did face the dissidents, but that was rather obvious, since ||Rukey even said he wanted to prove himself.||
But, the way I read about the Bog miniquest it seemed like it was something with more steps than this

#

Welp. Thanks anyhow shadeembarassed

trail talon
#

Bertrude's probably is the most involved, and has the biggest consequence for succeeding or failing. but it still really only amounts to doing a rite with a titan star active

#

maybe if you faced the withdrawn a third time, you'd see an effect?

prime dirge
#

OH. That makes sense

#

Uh. Also. Is it ever explained why the Minstrel travels with you but the Guardian stays at the summit?

trail talon
#

nope.

#

i guess one herald travels with the nightwings, them being the Official Team

#

and the other stays on the mountain

prime dirge
#

Makes sense. But. Those two are so different in how they regard the nightwings
Maybe that's just natural since they've done their thing for a long time?

trail talon
#

they're just different overall. tariq was sleeping in the blackwagon before the new nightwings found him. he doesn't seem to need to eat? and why would he only wake up when the nightwings become active again? and why does he show up when you've studied every portion of the book of rites that you can?

#

Mysterious Characters fascinate me. i want to find out their whole backstory, but it's usually impossible to do anything but speculate

prime dirge
#

I remember that the wagon was buried before Hedwyn took it out of the ground. Had no idea Tariq was in there just waiting

At some point the writers may give the community prompts a shot

wraith wave
prime dirge
#

Aha. That explains their attire a bit. But. Aren't Tariq's eyes yellow? I don't remember Celeste's. Black?

trail talon
#

the colour scheme fits, as do the roles of the two as wandering and stationary. but what does that have to do with the rites, which happen only at night?

#

celeste’s are gold, no?

wraith wave
#

tariq’s connection to the moon is less obvious than celeste’s to the sun but iirc tariq is an arabic word meaning something along the lines of walking in moonlight

spiral zealot

And he follows you like the illusion the moon follows you as you drive a car (or a wagon)

trail talon
#

i’m not fluent in arabic, but i can recognize an arabic name! :) though it was cool to see in a game, and it’s nice to know now what it means

(yes, hello, I'm here, did somebody @ me?)

prime dirge
#

I did. Point is, if we stumble upon any fun Pyre prompt, maybe at some point some capable writer may want to take that and see where it leads

#

Since we've been finding some funny scenarios. Sometimes even something worth writing about?

untold quartz
#

Hmm, you'll have to find a capable writer for that, though... 🤔

And I see why Supergiant games expressed that you listen to Bound Together after you finished the game

that either darren or ashley sings them, depending on what version of the song you hear

but maxed beads give 100% chance of returning after a plunge

At the cost of lots of dust, but you get the beads to use with anyone

Speaking of it, the only time I got that was with Bertrude and two other

trail talon
#

no, just the saying

#

i'm not sure if banishment sickness only happens at specific points in the plot, or if overuse of a character really does bring it on

prime dirge
#

Don't know either. Do you know anyone who might?

trail talon
#

do a general call-out to pyre players in the channel, i guess

spiral zealot
#

i might be able to look through the code for it tomorrow

trail talon
#

i remember one catching it at one point, then three catching it later on

prime dirge
#

I got it once, three at a time. Didn't know one alone could get it

trail talon
#

there was a point in the game where one character always got it. i always thought it was there to introduce the new mechanic/aspect of the game

prime dirge
#

Ah, makes sense

spiral zealot
#

@prime dirge Doing a little digging, ||after your 2nd lib rite, after the first rite on the isle of khaylmer (which i think is the first match right after that lib rite) 1 character gets sick, and the first match immediatly after the 4th lib rite 3 characters get sick, i cant find anywhere in the scripts where it determines who gets sick but i think its random||

lament rivet
#

Huh. ||I thought it was all the characters you used bc that happened to me twice in a row. It's right before the Oralech match, I figure it was a way to artificially increase the difficulty by making you use characters you weren't fully familiar with||

#

Or like just not your star team

spiral zealot
#

It might be, I was just guessing. ||it most likely is who you use the most but its handled on a place I cant see||

#

It is certain that every character can be sick, as every character has dialouge for being sick

trail talon
#

it always seems to be a character that you just used (though that may be obvious)

#

if three get sick, it will be the three that you sent out in the latest rite

prime dirge
prime dirge
spiral zealot
#

The signle sickness event chooses the person banished the most in the last rite, if 2 characters have the same its whoever you picked first

#

and the team sickness event causes everyone to be sick that you had last rite, unless this would brin you below 3 characters available for whatever reason then no one gets sick

prime dirge
#

Makes sense. But now I'm questioning whether that happened to me and I missed it entirely shadeembarassed

spiral zealot
#

again if it would reduce you below 3 playable characters you dont get it. I think at that point jodi and pam wont play together so if you lose the right character you dont get the event

scenic kiln
#

I remember when it happened to me, I thought it was because I had used Ti'zo in every single rite from when I got him lmao

spiral zealot
#

although looking at the progrssion of events jodi and pam play together at that point 🤔

#

and you have bertie, so a lot of characters

#

Hmm i wonder what ||optional: scavengers last hurrah|| means at the ||1st lib rite|| means?

prime dirge
#

Does that check go before or during the match?

#

It kinda looks like the title of a page of the book, but don't remember seeing it

spiral zealot
#

fairly certain its after not sure

#

its in the same section as ||volf's plan being introduced||

spiral zealot
#

the scavengers seem to be the original trio and you ||they are talking about ascending and hedwyn telling you about hte promise of getting everyone out||

trail talon
#

huh. why's it ||marked optional? is it that it could be the last time the "scavengers" are together?||

prime dirge
#

||Maybe that's checked for at the end of every lib rite, and triggers special dialog whenever a scavenger ascends for the first time?||

spiral zealot
#

||it will only trigger if you have played exactly 7 matches and your at the fall, and the onyl way it would be invalid to play is if any of the characters are ascended, might be forced and the schedule never updated||

prime dirge
#

Right. All clear now. But still, the name is a bit odd.

#

Does that part of the code look like
||if (scavengers_last_hurrah) {||?

spiral zealot
#

more like:
||if matchesPlayed == 7 then
if currentPos == (fallsPos) then
(comment saying its the scavengers last hurrah)
Add the conversation to the queu then force it to be played
end
end||

prime dirge
#

Ooh. ||I get the check now. But that said I can't wrap my head around the name. Maybe it made sense before then it changed but the name stuck? Name feels more apt for when the tetrad is broken. Not when it stays together||

spiral zealot
#

||reading through the dialogue it seems to be talking about how the lib rite might be the last time they are all together not the best named but it gets e message through||

prime dirge
#

Yup, that's all my questions solved. Feels a bit weird to ||have that as a possible insert to the dialog given I'm used to how Hades' gives you one pre-made dose without any possible modifiers.

Pyre is a VN and all, but knowing its dialog system is so far from Hades felt weird nonetheless.||

I recently got a job that involved working with Nastran (program for modeling bodies and forces and how they affect said bodies; very technical), and it requires working with a specific file format.

#

I could use any old text editor to work with it, but it is so much easier to use Notepad++ compared to something like Word. Mainly because the space and any symbol are exactly the same length.

#

Or rather width.

#

I tried asking for TextPad, which is what some of my colleagues use, but the IT guys said that it's paid, and the company does not have a license for it.

So I had to settle for something.

NP++ is great for editing scripting stuff--super lightweight, decent formatting control, and in-file auto-complete

vestal bluff
#

But like Erumi said, for most things, any text editor will do. The game runs on Lua and XML primarily

prime dirge

It has XML? That's a surprise

trail talon
#

had a thought a long time ago about why you as the player are so connected to the reader and by extension the nightwings. why every choice feels like it matters not just to the outcome of the game, but to YOU.
besides phenominal writing, that is.
it's because unlike most rpgs, the role of the reader is almost the same as the role of the player. what does the player typically do in a game? make choices and influence/control characters
what does the reader do? make choices and influence characters
add that to the fact that the reader has an identity that's largely left to interpretation
and yet, the reader is not YOU, but has his/her/their own voice, which allows you to feel a bind with this charater rather than simply projecting yourself onto him/her/them (though, of course, you might do that as well)
thought i'd put it out there. it's my Deep Thought of the evening

prime dirge
#

Is it so different in the rest of the games? I did feel a deeper connection, but in hindsight maybe that was because Reader's questions are the same player wants to ask, and also we always see the game from first person.

Come to think of it, the reason ``READER! OR SHOULD I SAY, ||DECEIVER!||'' spooked me to my core is that I felt AJ was talking to me

trail talon
#

it seems like with many rpg characters, you 1. see them (in some cases even control their appearance), and 2. do things as those character that you would never do in real life (battle monsters, bring down corporations)

#

in a traditional version of pyre, the reader might, as the leader of the nightwings, always be on the field

#

instead, they’re watching from the sidelines, influencing the plays....just as the player of the game does

#

the reader and the player see things from the same vantage point

prime dirge
#

Fair point. But I think those support the idea that Reader = player

#

Since there's no avatar for it, you become the avatar

trail talon
#

i did wonder about that, though there is one part of the game that seems to establish the reader as their own person. ||after volfred gives them the planner, they write their own entries in it, without any input from you||

scenic kiln
#

|| I feel like that's similar to many other games where the character writes their own logs, but is still your avatar ||

prime dirge
#

||What about all the dialog and anointment choices? Those are undoubtedly the player's. Also the speech near the end, that one was magnificent.||

#

||Also, who's translating Ti'zo? I don't think it's Reader. Wait no. At an early point you learn to understand him||

scenic kiln
#

|| No, I'm pretty sure that's the Reader, actually ||

prime dirge
#

||So that's a point for the split model, since Reader knows it but has to explain it to Player||

scenic kiln
#

|| not quite--I'd argue that's a reasonable allowance within the gameplay fiction of the Reader being the Player's avatar, where because the Reader knows it, the Player also knows it ||

trail talon
#

often, the player knows more than the character. could the same be said for pyre? i feel like the player doesn’t have much more knowledge than the reader does, if any

#

especially if you make it a point not to replay rites

scenic kiln
#

the Reader definitely has more knowledge in some ways, especially about the world (such as knowing where the various stars are--I imagine the process the Reader goes through is significantly harder than what we do as the Player)

prime dirge
#

That's true for most books and games. What the player experiences is a briefer, beefier representation of the universe's truth

#

But does that mean anything Pyre-wise?

#

Is the in-game music a Player-only component of the game? IMO that's true for most scenes, except for ||lib rites||
But then there's ||AJ speaking in plain English. But maybe that's the game doing the translation for you?||

scenic kiln
#

|| I'd say that's the game doing the translation, in the same way that Zagreus speaks English instead of Ancient Greek ||

#

Unless that's just a || 4th-wall break... ||

prime dirge
#

Yup, but then we must ask whether ||Sahrian voices are product of SGG's choice or sound foreign for a reason||

#

Side note: ||would Zag speak ancient Greek? He probs speaks the rest of the god's language (no idea what it is, esp Chaos'), but also speaks fine with Pat/Achilles/Eurydice/Orph. Man this is confusing||

scenic kiln
#

|| Probably a bit of both--linguistic drift would make it sound slightly foreign, but the Reader has no difficulty understanding them. ||

trail talon
#

||the written language does seem to differ from the common language. when volfred speaks the written language, it’s shown to be distinct. unless his words appear in the reader’s mind, rather than his voice, which is a possibility||

prime dirge
#

If you guys see anything smoky, don't worry it's just my 🧠

scenic kiln
#

I really need to get back into my Pyre of Hell Hellfire Pyre playthrough once the school semester ends...

prime dirge
scenic kiln
#

|| that would be my guess--I/Reader would be used to upside speech, and possibly speaking the written language aloud. As a largely separate society with semi-regular arrivals from Upside, I imagine the Downside spoken language would be similar, but at the very least sound different ||

prime dirge
#

||This is consistent with the several different pronunciations of common words. 4-ish years feels like not enough to change someone's speech that much. But the downside language could easily have developed on its own, then new arrivals pick it up quickly||

prime dirge
trail talon
#

||it would probably be long enough for people of the downside to develop an accent, and certainly a local slang. it seems like the downside’s been inhabited for a long time, however, which suggests a downside dialect||

would groot exist in modern pyre when saps already exist?

if tree creatures aren’t fantastical, there’s no reason to create one

prime dirge

Conversely, all SGG MCs have been human-like

#

Fiction would exist, but fictional saps wouldn't have such problems with language. (Would they? Volf and Manley are quite the plotters)

untold quartz
#

my favorite thing about the way they use the conlang voiceover in Pyre is that ||it hits you like a thunderbolt the first time Volfred speaks directly into your mind and it's in English||

#

||or, y'know, whatever language you're playing in||

#

it's a phenomenal effect

#

probably the closest you can possibly get to ||replicating how shocking and intimate it would feel to be suddenly addressed directly mind-to-mind for the first time||

wraith wave
#

also the way tariq + celeste sing in english, as if they’re old songs that no one else is understanding

#

the conlang in pyre and how it’s used is so cool to me, one of my favorite parts of the game

prime dirge
#

I thought ||AJ's voice and the rite songs were "translated" by the game for you? If the songs are supposedly in Sahrian maybe that implies that the Scribes spoke English?||

prime dirge
timid silo
#

The implication is absolutely that English was the old language! It's the one the Book is written in, too

untold quartz
#

I'd also be willing to accept the possibility that English is being used as a stand-in for the effect of ||having a particular language that only the player and a select few characters speak and understand||

#

(which is great fun because in almost every fantasy world, the common tongue is represented as "English", and they make up a fancy conlang for the ancient magical language)

#

(but in this game, ||you understand the ancient magical language||, so that's the "English" equivalent and the conlang is the common tongue)

#

either way, it's so good, ahhh 💕

spiral zealot
#

you ever think ||the reader doesn't understand saharian, and is instead reading peoples minds unconsiously and only at the top level, that would be pretty cool||

untold quartz

one of the backstories you can choose is an elderly farmer, so you could also imagine ||them having gradually lost some or all of their hearing without realizing it, compensating unconsciously with their Reading||...

spiral zealot
#

YES

untold quartz
#

(then again, isn't it canon that ||the moment when you choose *ae's name is supposed to be the first time the Reader fully Reads someone like that, hence the black screen etc.?|| I feel like I saw that mentioned somewhere, which would put some holes in that headcanon)

timid silo
#

I think the thing is that regular reading becomes a psychic power in the Downside?

trail talon
prime dirge
#

That's a great prompt @untold quartz . Also that checks out with how you're weak and all at the beginning. Maybe you're also overwhelmed by all the new feels

#

Maybe the downside is much more grim, but we as Readers see it much more colorful? Come to think of it, the place where everyone gets gloomy didn't look as horrifying as the text suggested. Admittedly we're missing the smell and the place is not as bright as the other tiles

#

Maybe the emote-color backgrounds are also because of the reading? shadeohboy

trail talon
#

the real beauty of the downside, however, is the friends we made along the way

prime dirge
#

THEY ALL LEAVE. Well. Many of them

spiral zealot
#

||The real beauty of the downside is the friends we made along the way that we promptly abandoned by yeeting them up an inverted waterfall to start a revolution without us||

prime dirge
#

Sounds about right. But you ||missed crying at the credits||

trail talon
#

||excuse me, we didn’t abandon them, they found their way home||

prime dirge
#

Well it felt like ||abandoning them||

trail talon
#

i mean, technically ||they abandon the reader, though i never felt particularly abandoned||

#

||seeing as it’s the reader that can’t leave||

spiral zealot
#

||and it is the readers choice on who goes up, taking away that abandoning feeling||

prime dirge
#

||That's true but you walk away with most of your buddies, whereas the Annointed gets yeeted and falls there knowing nobody||

trail talon
#

||how many buddies are with you depends on how successful you are at the rites. but the anointed do know people in the commonwealth. think of fikani and rukey’s family||

prime dirge
#

Well yes. But ||the waterfall (waterrise?) drops the anointed presumably wherever, and they have to find their way with no money nor food. And they're separated from the people they've spent years or days with. How long does Pyre take, canonically?||

trail talon
#

||they get taken in by the commonwealth and treated like royalty upon their return||

untold quartz
#

Someone plotted that out, but I forget the exact number... Several months, at least, though.

#

And yeah, ||it's canon that the ascended are immediately scooped up by the agents of the Commonwealth, feted, and offered high-ranking social and/or governmental positions||

#

||The corrupt government has a strong interest in suppressing the information that there's a way out of exile, and they bribe and suborn freed exiles to keep it that way||

prime dirge
#

That explains the ||message explaining their rejection of their offered roles. Thought they had to do some walking before that happened though||

untold quartz
#

||That's why Volfred's plan hinges on subverting that process. 😁||

#

||I always assumed the Commonwealth has figured out exactly where the Falls are going to spit people out, and sends a welcome wagon every month when the stars align, to get to them before they can start running their mouths off.||

spiral zealot
#

||scp foundation but the anomalies are just returned exiles||

prime dirge
#

||That's another good prompt!||

untold quartz
#

||A lot of positions of power in the Commonwealth are filled by liberated exiles who now uphold the oppressive system that lifted them up. It's a pretty good fantasy metaphor for how real-world systems often work.||

#

||The lucky few who manage to make it to the top of the treehouse, pulling the rope ladder up after themselves, instead of extending a hand to those still on the ground... 😑||

#

||And our man Sandalwood plotting to sneak the right people into said treehouse, so they can let the ladder down again. Revolution! 😁||

(Edit: my final scorecard was also 23:1:2, I only lost the final boss fight and the one I threw because Fate deserved it. Then the bi I got since my last opponent didnt show)
I made the most selfish choice in the end. I couldve liberated Volfred or Oralech. But I dont regret it. I kept Hedwyn around as long as possible, because I liked him so much, and I think hes why I chose to save myself in the end. He said much earlier that I should be selfish when the time comes, and that my friends would understand. I also really wanted to see Hedwyns promise stand true, seeing how much he stressed over it. the only thing I would have changed was saving Tamitha instead of Ti'Zo, but the choice didnt present itself to me. Can't remember even hearing much about it back when it came out.

#

Though reviews do seem quite good, checking them now.

prime dirge
#

The past is quite the mistery too. We've had fun theorycrafting/wildly guessing some things before Reader arrives with the Nightwings

trail talon
#

pretty sure there was less publicity overall for pyre than there was for the other games

solar cedar
#

I just can't get over how unlike any other game I've played it is.

trail talon
#

pyre never got released for switch either, so it missed out on the revival of publicity

solar cedar
#

I guess those who have played VNs before might find that aspect familiar but I've only played one before so even that's quite fresh for me.

trail talon
#

and it’s super unique, so it was probably hard to market

solar cedar
#

Oh. They should consider a Switch release.

#

Its gameplay is perfectly suited for short sessions.

#

I play between study breaks. It slots in so well.

trail talon
#

the short answer to that is that it’s way too difficult to port, especially for a smaller studio like supergiant which has less resources

trail talon
#

there’s an official response somewhere

solar cedar
#

I don't even know how to go about describing it to friends when I want to recommend it.

solar cedar
#

Is there a way to disable pings by default for replies and have me manually turn it on instead of having me manually turn it off?

prime dirge
#

VN in a wonderfully detailed world, plus fantasy basketball?
Admittedly that leaves out a big part of the charm and magic

solar cedar
#

That's a pretty colorful description.

stiff tangle
#

That joke's not even mine

#

unrelated but I saw someone named Shae online and legit was like 'huh, you're not the vagabond'

#

I didn't even name her that

trail talon
#

lol maybe it’s my playstyle. i’m very slow paced

#

jodi’s great

#

she can banish the whole field on her own

prime dirge
#

She's great as a 'goalkeeper' too.
Also it was easy for me to bond with her since she reminds me of Eiger of Shadowrun Dragonfall so much

trail talon
#

oh wow, you’re right! they would get along

prime dirge
#

Honestly those two could dress like the other at a party and nobody would notice

#

Plus there's a big list of things you can say about both

#

Blonde horned stoic person, security specialist, takes things seriously, hits like a truck, especially their faces and demeanor

#

Imagine Jodi braiding Eiger's hair thanthink
That I'd pay to see

trail talon
#

that’s a great image

#

doesn’t take anything from anyone, but does care deeply about their team

#

the responsible ones

prime dirge
#

Quite true

#

(1) Blitz looks a bit like Rukey and is also laid-back
(2) Glory has minor ||Pam|| similarities
(3) Look at her and tell me that's not Jodi
(4) Dietrich has similar gameplay to ||Volf, since both play with 'saps' and team buffs||

trail talon
#

hmmmm
i agree that the blitz and rukey comparison works
not sure how glory is like ||pam?|| they have entirely different personalities and are in different situations.
dietrich and ||volfred works as well: one was a "down with the system" punk rocker, the other is a revolutionary, and you meet them both when they're older and wiser||

prime dirge
#

The Glory-Theyn link is weak indeed. ||For them both, you can't figure them out at the beginning. Also are unwilling amputees||
Aha! Dietrich's is deeper than I thought. Also ||Volf cares deeply about tizomg , Dietrich derails a mission just to try rescue his nephew||
Maybe Paul Lastname and ||Tariq are similar a bit? Both are more involved than you'd expect, are quite the academics, and has skills none of the 'warriors' in his group have||

#

(Yes I forgot Paul's last name)

trail talon
#

paul amsel! though ||paul has less mystique then tariq does, and it's ironic that one appears to be immortal while the other dies||

prime dirge
#

DANTE IS TIZO HOW DID WE NOT NOTICE

#

HE EVEN || ACTS AS AN ADORABLE GOOFBALL THEN OUT OF THE BLUE TURNS OUT HE MEANS BUSINESS TOO||

trail talon
#

OF COURSE. both small and cute with hidden depths

#

glory almost seems like ||mae, in a way. they both have a element of innocence to them, though glory's is an innocence lost. and mae stayed down with me for the entire course of the game and i never heard her backstory||

prime dirge
#

||Paul, though. Both him and Tariq are the only ones that seem to care about their skin. He got the bravest death in all the SR games, I think?|| <- HEAVY SR DF spoilers

trail talon
#

||yeah, that scene was a shock. and you not knwing what you might find when you got home||

#

now i'm trying to link up the shadowrun hong kong cast with the nightwings and totally drawing a blank lol

prime dirge
#

That other Glory explanation is also solid. I feel like she'd be ||the happy preacher Kae becomes in the Commonwealth were not for her horror childhood||

#

Heck. ||Both dwabble in magic||

trail talon
#

||true enough, though in very different ways. they both turned to a sort of spiritualism, but glory turned to the wrong kind||

prime dirge
#

Racter is a bit like ||Bertrude?||. Both dwell in the dark doing their magic. Also would ruin all your birthdays were they to choose so

trail talon
#

you may be right

#

can't help wondering if ||racter's somewhere between bertrude and udmildhe, though!||

prime dirge
#

Yeah that's a better call

trail talon
#

i always agreed to disagree with his ideas

prime dirge
#

I feel like Duncan and Gaichu would have an easy equivalent in Pyre. Yet also blanking

#

Racter real spooky, yup

trail talon
#

||duncan and hedwyn: both good people (though with faults) thrown into bad situations||

prime dirge
#

Oh. The Blitz-Rukey link has also ||love woes||

#

Gobbet does magic and potions like Bertrude

#

ron is the guy that calls you "Yo, Carnivore", too
Ezkibel or HK's doctor are loosely similar to Udmildhe in their line of work kinda

trail talon
#

gobbet has ||sir gilman's enthusiasm||

#

don't compare ||ten armed ambrose to udmildhe, he's a solid guy||

prime dirge
#

Their work is icky on both accounts. But that's the only comparison

#

Yup. That's him. I remembered because of his ||I am the Law, yo!|| uncalled-for boast zaglol

trail talon
trail talon
prime dirge
#

Well, ||her magic would involve blood and sacrificing toads and so on. Gross||

#

You're making me want to replay both SR games 😑
That's cruel on your part

trail talon
#

i replayed them both about a few months ago! i’d pretty much forgotten everything about them, so it was great to play them again

#

and that soundtrack is better than i remembered!

prime dirge
#

Once I finish the ||"Look, they even towed the ship" campaign||, I can replay SRDF. Another race and role for me squirtheh

#

I think I played SRDF the same winter I got Bastion? Finishing that is also on the list

trail talon
#

do you mean the ||SRHK bonus campaign? because i do know that it's nothing to write home about, especially compared to the main story||

prime dirge
#

Yup. ||Started it and it seems neat. The submarine shenanigans and boarding a ship sounds...like something to write home about. But these news are saddening||

trail talon
#

i won't spoil it. definitely play it out: the sidequests at least are pretty solid. i'd love to hear your own opinion on it when you've played it through

prime dirge
#

Also the beginning is rather creative. Alright then. I'll try having fun with it shadesmile

solar cedar
#

Oh my.

#

So much spoiler text.

#

I've only played Shadowrun Returns and that was almost 5 years ago.

#

Do mean to play the other 2 eventually.

trail talon
#

they're both much better than returns and worth a play!

prime dirge
#

Strong agreement. Played DF, HK, then Returns. Felt odd since it differs so much in feel and character count and so on

#

HK has great soundtrack and very fun mission setting. Dragonfall is amazing in its own way too. Walking around in the hub area was always a blast

prime dirge
# solar cedar So much spoiler text.

This channel has lots of spoiler, I think more than the other channels in this server. Most of the time is Pyre-centric too (this Shadowrun geekout was an anomaly, I swear)

solar cedar
#

Hehe, I'll take your word for it.

#

I've not played much Pyre these past two days. Final Fantasy XV has completely taken over my life.

||The credits song shadegrief ||

plush goblet
#

|| agreed|| @prime dirge

prime dirge
#

||Did you finish the game though? You said that you didn't finish the last rite||

#

A while back I was asking people their fav song of each game. Turns out not having played Transistor and not knowing Pyre's track names made me a bad "question host".

So once I finish the other games I'll be around asking people their 'cried the most at the end' ranking

#

Did Pyre have a more emotional end for you than Transistor?

trail talon
#

i'll tell you right now that it was pyre for me

#

||the credits song contributed||

#

||and my first ending was kind of bittersweet||

prime dirge
#

The scrolling drawing from Pyre felt stronger than Hades' IMO. Also the song. ||A gut punch in every verse||

#

I think that given Pyre's world, ||the best endings are bittersweet at most. But no real happy ending I think||

#

So sounds like your ending was a bit more bitter than that. ||I COULDN'T FREE RUKEY AND I WON'T FEEL OKAY ABOUT IT EVER||, so I get what you mean

trail talon
#

to be fair, transistor's ending is pretty strong too. pyre's did more for me, though

trail talon
plush goblet
#

|| i wanted to free hedwyn in the end but it did not happend as planned ||

trail talon
#

||i lost the first time as well: i think it's a path worth seeing. it brought a lot of conflicted feelings for me, and because of that it was quite interesting to see that oralech had conflicting feelings about his win as well||

prime dirge
#

||I missed all the hilarities of Hedwyn "flirting" with Bert, so that's something for my replay. Maybe also throwing the last rite||

#

||Paying Rukey's debt made me feel less conflicted about him staying tho||

plush goblet
#

|| im sure i will get it the next go round so im not to upset ya kno ?||

trail talon
#

you can never get a perfect ending, but you can get as close as possible

prime dirge
#

Well said, Pyre's 'no such thing as failure' is commendable

plush goblet
#

|| true true ||

#

thanks guys 🙂

prime dirge
#

The only failure is straying from the path

trail talon
#

||i had three objectives going back into pyre for the second time: free rukey, free oralech, and free sandra (which i didn't know you could do)||

plush goblet
#

|| i will say this tho. i love mae so much ||

prime dirge
#

I take offense at that last objective

#

#2 is something I should try. Having that on my first playthrough would have torn me

trail talon
#

i didn't know :D when i realized that ||doing those trials actually affected the story, i just had to go back!||

prime dirge
#

Huh. Didn't know they did shadeohboy

prime dirge
trail talon
#

||the only reason i went up is because i thought i could affect the plan: i didn't realize the percentage for success was already locked in. since i lost the last rite, though, it wasn't so bad (especially because volfred was still down there too)||

plush goblet
#

|| i did not || but i will next time.

#

|| i wanted to but i picked bertrude instead.||

#

@prime dirge

trail talon
#

||mae's|| an interesting one, especially since ||she seems to not mind being in the downside||

prime dirge
plush goblet
#

|| i felt like it was valid.|| i felt for her ya kno

#

|| she kinda felt obligated i think . but maybe thats a stretch ?||

trail talon
#

||she didn't seem to want to go. she had a good thing going. that being said, my first playthrough i sent rhae home first: figured that she had her whole future ahead of her||

prime dirge
#

That said, Kae's outcome in the Upside was a heartwarming thing to imagine

trail talon
#

bertrude's a late addition, but a strong player. i didn't use rukey a lot in my first playthrough, so his enlightenment took a while to build up.

#

||shae and jodi being together was one of the plus sides||

plush goblet
#

|| out of all of them i say mae, gilman and maybe pam were my top ||

#

also || rukey||

||hedwyn was solid all round||

untold quartz
#

I do love the way Shae ends up as the ||new high priestess of a kinder, gentler Scribe-centered religion if you send her up||

#

I prefer ||leaving her down, since she's so happy in the Downside and I wanted to prioritize people who had an emotional need for liberation||

#

But it's still a great outcome either way

#

I appreciate her a lot as a portrayal of a person who's blatantly not neurotypical but whose "oddities" are neither evil/threatening nor cruelly mocked (she's not perfect that way, but she's head and shoulders above the crowd these days)

#

And as a person who finds a joyful approach to a religion she loves, even when it's been twisted in gross ways by corrupt authority figures who have literally tried to exile her from her own faith and culture for being abnormal.

#

Both really valuable things that I don't see often in fiction.

trail talon
#

yeah, she captures perfectly the feeling of peace and spirituality you can get from practicing a faith, rather than taking the cynical view that practicing a faith is the same thing as following authorities of organized religion, which isn’t the same thing

jodi is really good as defense; parking her near the pyre when you're not using her helps keeps enemies away. chae is super fast and works really well if you want to just get the orb in the pyre as quickly as possible. hedwyn's a good offense; not as fast as chae but can still move quickly and has a decent attack

zenith heron

I still haven't really gotten used to using strategies in the rites but I really should because it's starting to get tougher.
