I think the most important feature a Sap can use while approaching is shield.

It feels so wrong to "jump" while staying in place.

It is radically different to everyone else.

But it provides one of the most effective countermeasures to Auras while you have the Orb.

Honest question: should I play pyre? I've beaten transistor and Hades and am working through Bastion but this is the game I've heard the least of

I mean, I always recommend SGG stuff because they just have such a high quality output

is there somehting in specific you wanted to know about Pyre or were concerned about?

It's a little repetative but there's a wide range of characters and they're very fun to hang with

It's a pretty interesting departure from Bastion and Transistor (haven't played Hades yet but I understand it shares a lot of genes of the first two). There's a strong visual novel element, and the team-based "combats" do share some bones with their isometric ancestors, but overall I'd say it's the most unique setup of their games to date. It does, as Bratty mentioned, get kind of repetitive. That's offset somewhat by the persistent team changes you can enact as you go (once someone is let go, they're gone for good from your roster!) and you can influence later matches with some careful planning. But it is... different.

it is also quite long compared to Bastion and Transistor (Hades nonwithstanding as a Roguelite that wants replays)

But there's a big, fun cast and it has probably the most diverse soundtrack from SGG up to that point (again, not familiar with Hades)

Go for it. I came to Pyre after Hades. It required a bit of a shift in terms of concentration – while Hades may be felt as gameplay + story/character dialogues along the way, Pyre is primarily visual novel (mostly reading) with a duel 3v3 mechanic in between. So it was a different feeling for me in terms of the genre, let's say, but the Supergiant attention to detail, the stellar characterisations and emotional punches... as well as the tsunderes, haha, are all there.

I feel like with TN you can pretty easily maintain a solid crew without losing a ton at each liberation, but it would detract from the emotional decision of freeing a member

But if you use the team of three you want, you’re going to lose one of them at the next liberation rite, that’s just how the game works

So unlike most rpgs you can never build toward what you think is an ideal setup

The tradeoff was interesting and worth exploring my first run for sure

But second run, where I want to try specific tactics, it’s annoying

Encouraging the player to switch it up and try a variety of combinations is a design choice I appreciate in general and SGG tend to go out of their way to find new ways to do just that... "you're literally gonna lose one of your top three players each season" looks to me like a natural follow-up to Transistor's "you like plot, right? Who doesn't like plot. We're keeping the plot hostage until you change your loadout"

Again, I liked it fine on my first playthrough

I’m not saying they shouldn’t have done it

But on a subsequent playthrough, where I’d like to drill down harder on the gameplay mechanics and try to test my strategy ideas against a harder challenge, it makes it tough because you have to pull back units to secure them for future use, and you’ll never have access to all of the resources like you would in most any other game

Based on the wording of the unique talismans when you go to upgrade them with stardust, I expected them to give you an option to rerecruit one or two generic versions of units of the same race as one you liberated, but that ultimately didn’t happen

I mean if you’d really just like to test out a certain team composition, you don’t have to do that in a campaign, that can be done in versus mode

Hey y'all, I'm having a Pyre bug that is getting in the way of progressing the story and was looking for advice.

I finished my first Ascension Rite (liberated Chae the Changeling and am kind of regretting it since Jodariel yelled at me for sending such a naive kid out there alone) and I got to the part where my wagon flies now.

Only when I start flying, I lose all control of my mouse.

It keeps gravitating to the bottom right corner and I can't select anything now.

Try alt-tabbing out, ideally (ime) to something on another screen, then clicking into Pyre again.

As long as you keep the mouse down, you'll be able to aim it normally

Erisa pushed Oralech just before he was about to Ascend. She died instantly because that wasn't possible. Only the anointed one can Ascend.

However, if you let the Fate wins, Dalbert does practically the same for his adopted son. However - nothing happened to him.

I just finished my 2nd play-through. First play-through I was able to win all liberation rites (Normal Difficulty, and I kinda cheated by not using any Titan stars on Liberation rights because I wanted to them all freed :-)).

On my 2nd, I played on Harder difficulty, but intentionally lost all liberation rites (that was hard to do - mentally) - because I want to watch event I couldn't on the 1st play-through because people were getting liberated.

And now, I'm not sure a 2nd play-through is enough. I had a change to fight the Chasity 3 times - and the side story keep evolving each rite.

Same with the Fate. On my first play-through I didn't played against them often, so the relationship between Almer and Fae wasn't very clear at the epilogue. But this time around, I made sure to meet them couple of times and it add big layer of story telling.

There's probably a lot of side-stories I didn't encounter. I don't know why Tizo don't like the Accusers for example. I bet there's a story about it.

I had a single battle of Betrude Vs the Withdrawn (the one that the other one gets a pretty major debugg). And yea - I kinda like how Volfred hides from Chasity - but Manfly figures it out. I wonder if this story continues if you keep more battles.

I guess the Fate has a pretty decent story. If getting liberated.

And I like some of the inner interactions I missed. 1st play-through I released Jodi pretty early, so I missed the "Peace" made with Pamitha.

There was also a touching moment with Fae telling Jodi how she survived. Getting a big fate hug from Judi and a smile. Charming moment.

So yea, as much as I was painful not liberating anyone - It did open a lot of interactions I missed on the 1st play-through.

I started playing Pyre and it's something all right

Very different från SGG's other three games but I think I like it

It's a whole new beast. To be honest. I feel in-love with Bastion the moment I played it. It took Hades/Transistor a bit longer. But I didn't really figured out Pyre until I finished the game.

It's like, watching a piece of art. But it's being shown to you in pieces. And you don't really get the idea just by seeing small sections of it.

Also, there's not much "Game" in Pyre. Especially compared to the 3 action packed games. The Rites are nice, but I always find controls to be a bit wonky to my taste.

But at the end, It's I think the peak of creativity for the team. Because they didn't stick to same action-packed style.

All the Games music was Amazing, but Pyre music is just about everything else. There's a lot of creativity with the how the song "generated" for your play-through, and the music all around is amazing.

Greg did an excellent job with character design. Probably one of the best works I have seen in Video-games. It's not often I "Care" about in-game characters, but it's amazing how everything you do is driven from that - "I want to make them happy/I want to be fair".

You do care, and that's a great achievement. Also, when someone pour his loving into something, It's shown. And Pyre is pfttt. So many small details in every small thing. It's hard not to admire that.

oh my well said! Pyre is such a different experience all in all. The art direction, the story, and the music is what sells it the most for me at least. Listening to the credits song generated from your playthrough feels really special, and knowing the epilogue of each characters afterward is also an amazing thing to do, it's like looking at the result of your hard work

But I'm absolutely floored by the game's use of the English language as a narrative tool. As in, the fact that they invented a new language that the characters speak in, and the player's ability to understand English is the entire reason they're a scribe.

yeah i believe that tbh. I definitely don't think that's the way teh game is meant to be played, but it was just an interesting thought to explore

and it cuts way too much on like any story telling element

which is still something I"m struggling to understand because I don't engage with a lot of hte visual novel genre.

like i don't even know if doki doki literature club counts as one and that's the closest i get alongside the pigeon dating sim

Speedrunning in general isn't the way most people play games but it's valid all the same

i just view speedrunning and those variants of "give yourself a different challenge" playthroughs as a like

"I've played this game so long that I want to find new ways to engage with it that challenge me beyond what the original challenge had for me."

i'd put titan stars in the same category of immersive gamer challenge.

but now i wonder what it would be like to create a game that actually intended for you to speedrun it from the beginning as a visual novel

campaign feels extremely easy that i got multiple full titanstars ries in it but else i just never get to enjoy myself cause my game almost constantly glitches out so i have to restart multiple rites

so, if i want a offensive demon you're gonna want stuff that makes it easier to stop the other characters from banishing you. the left side focuses on this with giving back stamina on a banishment, stunning others when you land from jumping and throwing the ball to banish the other team.
usually salutes kinda suck so the right side allows you to dash twice instead of just once so that also helps.
for the tailsmans the star splinter is something that makes the character throw faster
pairing this up with the throw banishment makes that ability much more deadly now

as soon as i had him and barker fight it out i knew to liberate him

i don't know much about setting up a wyrm
but for a harp i usually take the right side with a focus on dunking rather than throwing such as the fell swoop, the aura blast and the 4+ overall to stats and then the first one on the left that reduces the amount of stamina the push takes.
for the talisman the prayer bead is a absolute return or the harp special talisman that returns her after only flying in.

when going in with wyrm as main offense/scorer the throwing is just so much worse than the jumping/dunking even if it's unstopable

the imp orb trial was PAIN

i think i was doing it for an hour or so

with imps you can build them so that you can just fly over to your opponent and drop down (without the orb) and get rid of them

it doesnt feel like ti'zo is returning faster even after investing into that path

but that was just for the imp trial since ti'zo is literally alone

also with imps i really grew accustomed to them having the wing as talisman since the stamina looks like alot but really goes fast

so trying to build for something else talisman-wise is totally new land for me

i like it for saps since i usually only use them for defense but if they come back with full stamina it's just funny

i take thorned knot cuz it clears out the entire arena usually
