Coolguy’s got it. Those three talismans are pretty essential on TN
Remind me what they do, please?

vestal bluff
#

Lanthorn: %Chance to bring back a teammate when you banish an opponent (can be upgraded to 100%, so you’ll always get someone back)

Prayer Beads: %chance to return next round if you plunged into the opponent’s Pyre (can be upgraded to 100%, so that character will have no disadvantage to dive-scoring)

Star Splinter: %Increase throwing charge-up speed (can be upgraded to +80%, which lets basically anyone throw at max range in the blink of an eye)

stoic junco
#

... These are indeed immensely effective in TN mode. If only I knew.

Why is Pamitha's aura not an actual circle like the rest?

#

what does that mean?

stray jolt
#

she does something unique

tall lantern

like?

vestal bluff
#

She (and similar - Gilman and Udmildhe are also this way) leaves a trail behind her as she moves

muted pebble
#

Also Pam goes woosh

vestal bluff
#

Instead of the aura sticking exactly to where she is

grim tusk
#

It also means it can’t be increased iirc

jagged pebble
#

yea if you give her thorned knot and the aura ballast ability it’s basically makes the cast bigger

vestal bluff
#

The radius doesn’t increase for those three (Crones, Harps, Wyrms) but if you give them more Presence, their trail length gets longer

#

And yeah Thorned Knot is great with Gilman’s Slash (double so with Greater Cleave) or with Pam’s Fell Swoop

torpid niche
#

If Pyre characters lived in modern times... Who do you think would be famous on social networks?

#

I bet Pamitha would have a Twitch channel and play a lot of FFXIV

timid silo
#

I can see basically all of them carving their own niche if they wanted to 🤔 up to and including Falcon Ron

#

perks of a charismatic cast I guess

mild falcon
#

now i wanna hear udmildhe do a podcast

timid silo

she'd find her audience for sure. Partly ironic, partly... not.

torpid niche
#

Uldmildhe would have a conspiracy channel on YouTube for sure xD

#

And Falcon Ron would do life hacks

timid silo

torpid niche
#

YES

#

Jodi would have a self-defense tips Instagram account, her fans calling her the muscle mom

torpid niche
#

I see Volfred as someone who would make a coffee making channel or something like that, very exquisite and perfectionist

#

Near the city I live in there's a village which mayor has Twitter and became mildly famous, and now the village has a Twitter statue xD

timid silo

stoic junco

I remember reading one fanfic about Pyre, and it had Volfred die.

#

When Tariq began singing a parting song, which was not specified, I immediately thought about Lament of Orpheus as the closest one to that.

timid silo
#

I think I've read it too 😭 my fave ones are the ones about his arrival in the Downside - Oralech saving his life, Ti'zo biting him and all.

small zinc
#

Finally got to play the game, finished my first playthrough. Absolutely amazing, but I did absolutely terrible in the liberation rites, made terrible picks both from lore and gameplay standpoint, lost four of them, including the last one. And now I feel pretty guilty about it, the epilogue made me feel that everyone is more or less peace with where they ended up being in the end, but I feel guilty for separating the group in perhaps not the most fortunate way (Tamitha got out, Pamitha stayed; Fae got out but Jodi stayed... well, she was the first pick and tbh I had no idea that the two were close, then I didn't manage to get Jodi out; Hedwin got out but didn't get his wish cause Jodi and Reader stayed)... The burden of the one who has to decide. But it's kinda ironic, in that motivational speech I chose the "Our spirits cannot be separated by mere distance" line, tbh I had no idea what to pick so I went with that, wasn't too happy with it later, but now I'm beginning to realize that it was the perfect line for me (and for my rite performance hah). It feels that the first playthrough is the "real" one, I guess I'm yet to come to peace with the outcome. But one thing I can't complain about, that's getting the orb.

#

Uh, just rambling and accidentally hit send before having a second thought whether to actually send it whoops

small aspen
#

i always want to hear when someone takes the sandra ball

small zinc
#

Absolutely yes, I see a green ball, I take it, no questions needed 😂 . Very happy about being allowed to make that choice, it would be pretty bad to leave her with no hope. Even the exile that was forever wasn't truly forever.

coral turret
#

I saw someone say in a modern au falcon Ron would have a life hack channel and I want to clarify I think he would have the kind that play random and jarring tracks (sometimes sped up and layered over multiple songs) while demonstrating absolute nonsense like just a shaky, very low res video filmed on a 2002 blackberry of his hand smashing eggs on a counter with an unintelligible voiceover as he explains...something

timid silo
#

Yes yes he would

coral turret
#

Tizo and gae would watch it and understand

small aspen
#

so like how to basic or something?

timid silo
#

Oralech'e entire technological involvement is owning a Nokia 3310

torpid niche
#

"Oh sure I'll write it on my PDA"

coral turret
#

How to basic but earnest and no irony whatsoever plus the added mania of Russian life hack videos showing you how to use gasoline and styrofoam to make a party a little more. Lively

#

I think gilman would be really into that side of YouTube where guys with beards make their own swords and be really heartbroken he didn’t have hands with which to try doing it on his own. Also the lack of hands would translate into hours of YouTube auto play and recommendations slowly morphing the sword and axe videos to like those insane Elsa and Spider-Man surgery children videos and he would just

#

Consume all the content with the same wild abandon unless someone helped him

timid silo
#

I kind of really need this AU now

#

Poor Gilman though! He can make videos where he does things real fast?

coral turret
#

Rukey holding a camera in his mouth(?) Not even correctly facing gilman and going (muffled) “ok chum. Ready when you are!” And gilman like. Has a basket ball balanced on his head and is set before some sort of really convoluted obstacle course made up of like, just a hula hoop on the ground, maybe a upside down laundry basket, a giant teddy bear. And it’s very unclear what he’s going to attempt but whatever it is he just does it really stupid fast and rukey doesn’t catch any of it on film so he has to do it like four times over

#

And then they upload the result to tiktok and it gets one view (from rukey. Maybe the reader) and gilman is ecstatic nonetheless

grim tusk
#

Alrighty then

timid silo
#

tfw you make it to the end of a game that has multiple choices pertaining to multiple characters, the credits song has lyrics... and they don't change based on your choices. I shouldn't have felt a little disappointed, but Pyre set a standard here 😂

lime mural
#

That kind of attention to detail is why I want a AAA Supergiant game.

small zinc
#

Just a question, was there any way to raise the difficulty of the practice rites? Far too often I steamrolled the Beyonders only to get destroyed in an actual rite... I guess they were good enough to test new stuff but not for learning how to play more effectively. I would almost say the Beyonders didn't do such a good job. but for Sandra's sake I would totally say they did

stoic junco
#

Were they difficult on the higher difficulties?
... I don't think so...

vestal bluff
#

I don’t think so

#

Sandra’s crew never gains Masteries or Talismans so they get outclassed pretty badly over time

spark moon
#

Plus they're already imprisoned for eternity so why try

small zinc
#

I see, that's unfortunate. I never really learnt to cooperate the three. After finishing I put CPU vs CPU both lvl 5 and watched in awe what they did. Of course CPU has an easier time switching x)

timid silo
#

Watching capable human players on Sunday is the best :] did you try training in vs mode? If Sandra can't help...

small zinc
#

Sunday? Some kind of stream or event going on? Anyway, yeah, tried that too after I finished my first playthrough.
Honestly, I found it kinda ironic when I was mentoring an exile about some deep aspect of the rites, meanwhile I wasn't able to properly use half of the abilities and relied mainly on banishing as many as possible and then outmaneuvering the rest x)

spark moon
#

Oh we have a Rite Nite on sundays where people can suggest certain conditions like which exiles we use. There's some pretty skilled players there

timid silo
#

It's promo'd each Sunday in this channel, keep an eye out! 🙂

small zinc
#

I see 👀 . Didn't know about that. Honestly, I might try to figure stuff on my own first, I'm just slow at that. But thanks nevertheless!

spark moon
#

There's no pressure to play right away if you just want to observe plus we've got a discord if you ever want some more help with builds and strategy

small zinc
#

No I mean, I'm afraid the game would lose its magic to me if I started looking up strategies and stuff. Can't really explain why, just my gut feeling x). And I feel like exploring it on my own first. But I will keep it in mind 😃

spark moon
#

OKay

stoic junco
#

It still felt amazing watching Oralech jumping toward someone, switching to the Savage and begin sprinting, while Oralech with now existent Aura landed, stunned and/or banished those he landed next to. This is a high-skill an AI play.

small zinc
#

Funny how I had originally said about my first playthrough that "one thing I don't regret is getting that Sandra ball". I don't know how it went completely over my mind the first time, but after a couple of convos she basically tells you that she abuses your good will to talk with her to read your entire mind for her own entertainment without your consent and feels 0 remorse for doing so. And kind of implies that it's the #1 reason why most began to avoid her. She whines about being bored and alone and yet she keeps treating everyone like trash, one way or the other. I think she's staying in the wagon next time 👀 .

mild falcon
#

damn thats a real hot take round these parts

#

dunno if you're trapped and lonely for a hundred years you really stop trying to make friends and just have the fun you can

#

and anyway the reader reads people's minds without consent basically by accident

#

...the reason she gets left behind by all the other people who escape is because she's a useful tool for the ones left behind

#

not because she was mean or whatever

#

there are maybe some interesting parallels between sandra and the reader in that they are popular because they are useful?

#

I'm burnt out on essays rn tho

pastel echo
#

it's just kind of too harsh of a punishment

#

you had eight scribes who were all about earning your redemption and freedom

#

but they put her in a ball for how many...800+ years?

#

Admittedly, she was sent to kill Solian Murr, but so was Gol.

mild falcon
#

"yeah i think people should be able to prove that they're good people, except for when they try to kill my boyfwend"

pastel echo
#

#

it just makes me wonder how much of story of sccribes is correct

#

or honest

#

to be more precise

mild falcon
#

yeah somehow she was left out of that book hmmmmgh

#

the scribes are a bunch of rude wizards who decided it would be cool and epic to be martyrs

#

"Aha 😳 what if we kissed 😳 and sacrificed our lives to free future sinners but only if they believe in us hard enough and are good at sports"

pastel echo
mild falcon
#

Sorry but Mr. Ashpaws was right about everything

forest girder
#

She has been so long in the ball she has passed the five stages of grief to reach a sixth one: boredom

timid silo
#

A thing about imprisonment is, it doesn't do wonders for your personality. Ditto getting close to generations of readers and being left behind every time - you put up your barriers before letting in people

#

Also heck yeah Barker. Idk what he said specifically about this topic but 👏 in general

pastel echo
#

I mean there is imprisionment

#

like in prison, where you are limited to where you can go or what you can do

#

then there is imprisonment in a small magical ball, where you sit in complete darkness without anything

forest girder
#

It's actually not darkness and she had her partners

pastel echo
#

well yea, who they got to hate after a while, like submarine sickness is real

#

but afaik, she was just sitting in darkness mostly, unless in match

#

that's how some descriptions of the crystal were anyway

timid silo
#

I'm intrigued by how she could seemingly detect some sort of movement of the Blackwagon? Like when she goes "ah yes, Sea of Solis, thought so"

#

No particular bearing on the discussion about her imprisonment nor personality, just a detail that makes me go "?" and that may be relevant to ficwriting

pastel echo
#

well I assume it can influence/feel surroundings

#

the crystal does call you out

#

for specific trial rites as well

torn bolt
#

now tbf sandra and the remaining beyonders did repeatedly try to kill the scribes, instead of defecting as others seem to have

#

still a bit harsh tho

forest girder
#

Well, the bizarre thing is that they forgave the TRUE culprit behind their actions

#

But not the literal brainwashed child slaves

pastel echo
#

I guess it still kind of goes with the themes of "life still goes on"

timid silo
#

"great historical figures are still people and people are gonna be hideous at times" too

torn bolt
#

DID they forgive khaylmer? or did lu sclorian notable pacifist forgive khaylmer

#

lu sclorian: we in fact forgave him :)

timid silo

pastel echo

forest girder
#

Lu sclorian: Writing we forgive you, Khaylmer

Gol: What the heck you talking about? You now what that arse did to us

Lu Sclorian: Shut up, my chapter, my rules

small aspen
#

wait wasn't the beyonder banishment also a bit of a rush job?

#

i seem to remember something about that

pastel echo
#

I don't know

#

maybe we can ask in the ask-supergiant

#

at next opportuntiy?

small aspen
#

not from a dev perspective, i mean the scribes did the thing in a hurry

#

i thought it was mentioned in one of the convos with Sandra

#

or the book

pastel echo
#

could be, admittetly, I finished 2nd playthrough 2 days ago, though I took a break in middle of it

#

so I might not remember it perfectly

#

but it does feel like too harsh punishment either way

#

I might be biased though cuz I liked her a lot as a character

#

hehe

timid silo
#

Definitely too harsh

small aspen
#

agree

#

i feel like it would make a lot of sense if they hit the panic button when she attacked and then after they'd be like whoops that was a bit much

timid silo
#

There's an interesting chronology there though, because the Sisters first attack Soliam reeeeeally early on, that's how he meets Ha'ub, but they get orb'd at Alodiel...

torn bolt
#

i thought it was that they followed them across the downside attacking multiple times

#

and that it was at alodiel that they finally lost the confrontation

vestal bluff
#

I hadn’t realized the location of the orbifying was actually given

timid silo
#

I hadn't thought of that before our recent chat and that makes perfect sense to me. At any rate the dilated timeline of their confrontation makes a rushed panicked decision less likely.

jagged pebble
#

wait
it is?

timid silo
#

Yeah, Sandra says so in her convo when you reach Mt Alodiel for the first time. I saw it last week and did a double take

vestal bluff
#

Huh

timid silo
#

One could say it was the most likely timing anyway because you have to be pretty damn eldritch to be able to orb people like that, and the Scribes weren't that OP at the beginning of their journey... but yeah.

vestal bluff
#

Yeah, they’d’ve had to have met Milithe so the sorcery of orbification could be performed by an actual sorceress

timid silo
#

indeed. And I suspect that defeating Yslach got her a nice boost

stoic junco
#

Added positive karma.

vestal bluff
#

The Scribes gained enough XP from killing all those Titans to cast “Imprisonment”

stoic junco
#

I don't quite get the reference.

vestal bluff
#

D and D

stoic junco
#

Ah

#

That's why. I never played D&D.

#

My closest thing to that was a oneshot on FATE Core over Skype.

coral turret
#

Is it ever explained why Sandra just can’t always be talking to the reader? Like during the game I know she pulls away at some point, trying to protect herself but even after that why can she just always be chatting with them? I wonder if she’d become bored with them and what she would do when they inevitably pass away

#

I always felt obligated as a reader to stay in the downside and also to keep Sandra with me JUST IN CASE the rites every start up again; I didn’t wanna be responsible for taking the orb to the commonwealth and making it inaccessible! Even if I don’t she and her team should have to be trapped and suffer. She’s going to anyways so might as well leave the orb in a place where others can perhaps find it and well. Keep her company so to speak, in the case I die! Also why was Sandra at the forefront of the orb and not the others? De facto leader status? Not questions I genuinely want answered just things I’m curious about

pastel echo
#

Apparently, she has some other duties?

#

That's what you get as a hover text, if you don't have available dialogue.

small zinc
#

@mild falcon You made some fair points. But sometimes I wonder whether I really do like her character if I constantly have to make up excuses for her behaviour because of assassin training or orb prison... you only see what you want to see.
That mind reading conversation, it doesn't really bother me that she reads your mind and can't help herself, but that she sounds like an "insane girlfriend" when she talks about it... it does not exactly sound like she tells you because she's figured out you deserve honesty and a choice whether you accept it... perhaps more like a weird way of showing that she cares. And just like about anything it can be explained by 843 years in the ball and not her being a horrible person.
Why do I even care, it's a fictional character. I guess launching Pyre because I was feeling terribly lonely IRL and I was hoping a game about a band of friends would fix it wasn't a good idea 😅

#

@coral turret iirc the ball has to allow her to chat... it apparently acts on its own too

coral turret
#

Huh interesting. Yknow while it may not be right I have to agree I allow her a few passes bc of how bad her circumstances are

pastel echo
#

that is an interesting point of view 🤔

split hearth
#

I just finished pyre for the first time. amazing. the pace, story, and characters were perfect. thanks supergiant. please release a limited run ps4 physical edition and take more of my money.

pastel echo
#

Probably won't pay for itself.

#

Pyre did rather badly.

#

Which is nigh criminal, but it is what it is.

stoic junco
#

Unfortunately, Pyre is not for everyone.

#

I came to accept that part.

pastel echo
#

I was bit lukewarm about it at first myself, but I think the game was too lenient.

#

Difficulty-wise.

#

The standard difficulty with no Titan stars is very simple to cheesy and you can keep doing the same thing over and ove.r

#

But the gameplay really shines on higher difficulty, where you have to minmax and try to play more tactically as well tossing the orb to opponent to banish him and so on.

#

And AI to match that.

jagged pebble
#

see
i’m too much of an idiot to come up with a strategy
i just do haha demon go brrrr and score

pastel echo
#

I don't think that's wrong 🤷‍♂️

#

I jus think it becomes more enjoyable once you get to know mechanics better

small zinc
#

I think the problem isn't that people wouldn't enjoy it, but they won't try it in the first place because they think they wouldn't.

#

Not enough openness to competitive gameplay that takes elements of real life team sports (some kind of ball most of the time) instead of being about shooting and slashing.

pastel echo
#

I am not into sports games

#

but damn if I wasnt doing fist pumps in tense matches

forest girder
#

I was thinking I wonder about Sandra's clothes. We're those her assassin's clothes or she got them after becoming fun-sized?

timid silo

those are almost certainly Nomad robes... 🤔 so, the latter?

it's a pity we don't get to see the regular clothes of all the other triumvirates...

forest girder

I heard about Bastion but wasn't interested because it wasn't my style of gameplay. Years later Transistor came out and gave it a try on a sale but for personal motives I didn't finish it, Pyre flew completely under my radar and didn't even knew it existed until after Hades appeared in the EGS and Hades I played ot a lot

#

I eventually finished both Transistor first and Bastion later tho

#

But not until 2018 and months apart

stoic junco

Pyre is unlike any other game from the studio I think. It's real special

It's the only one where the gameplay loop is so much more secondary to everything else. The story and world of this game really chew you in

I usually use gil as a runner just bc I love his jump, jodi as defense, and Pam as offense once I’m able. I never got the hang of rukey but gae was always a great alternative to gil and bertrude to pam. Volfred wasn’t my fav to play but if jodi wasn’t available, just standing on the pyre and deploying a sap was my usual defense method. I literally never played tizo and I feel bad about it. Hed was like, a well rounded player but didn’t have enough umph to ever take on one of the three roles so I rarely played him too. I’m losing every right in TN mode so I might try tizo/rukey/gae with the suggested talismans. mild falcon

I know that oralech shows up and replaces your final opponent at the end but they dont know that

wild grail
#

It seems like, out of the 8 Playthroughs I've seen on Youtube, 3 of them do not have the "By Default" rites (Chastity, Fate, Tempers). It seems that the "By Default" event can be overridden if you fight a Triumvirate you have not chosen to fight a second time.

midnight hawk
#

it's implied the nomads he had turned into demons

wild grail
#

Yeah I was thinkin about that, oof

vestal bluff
#

Their names confirm it

#

Demons are known to sometimes take a new name after they demonify

#

And the other Accusers are named "Vispa" and "Darben" at the start, but the Demons are named "Vispaleth" and "Darbenfor"....

mild falcon
#

When you turn into a demon you get a cooler name I love that that's canon

#

Imagine... hedwynith

muted pebble
#

But it makes me curious to how the accusers were formed to begin with and why do they pick Lendel to go if they win. The other 2 have clearly been in the downside longer than him since they turned into demons while he was still a nomad

wild grail
#

Under the circumstances of which he was banished, we could say the others in his triumvirate could have either been shown up by Lendel somehow, previous comrades of Lendel, or were persuaded by Lendel (and his "lies," perhaps).

#

That other name-fact, though, makes me wonder what the previous names of Jodariel, Ignarius, and Oralech were...if they aren't their original names.

muted pebble
#

My bets on Jodariel's name literally being Jodi

timid silo
#

Oralech didn't change his name since Volfred never saw him demonified when he talks about him!

#

The somewhat wonky timeline also lends itself to maybe headcanoning that different people demonify at different speeds volfredthink

mild falcon
#

Is that true? I thought volfred knew him as having one pair of horns

#

Some people say you demonify by losing your optimizing about leaving

gray kraken
#

from what i understand, the demonisation doesnt happen until you lose hope. i could be wrong

mild falcon
#

Yeah something like that

#

I like to think hedwyn has that hedband on to hide some growing horns

#

He's got to keep a stoic face on for everyone, and not show weakness

#

That's his character arc

#

Maybe lendel is also hiding his horns, he's too proud to let the downside take him

timid silo
#

I can't find the relevant convo - in my memories, it was something like his horns were just about starting to grow but could still be hidden by a headband. What's for sure is that the flashback portrait does not have visible horns!

Take Jodi and get the mastery that lets her do +10 damage when you taunt. You can also get damage talismans to make this more efficient. You can easily do this in the 2nd last rite (||The one where no one appears||).

I think I might have managed it with Bertha, a damage talisman and the bonus damage when you're ahead of them

Any advices for using Ti'zo?
I'm currently using him by suicide bombing / ramming people with last laugh + titan's rage mastery and lanthorn

celest fog

Using him to revive your others characters proved to be useful for me with webbed lanthorn, all credits to Failer (gotta admit Rukey is a great scorer :v).
Otherwise i like his unique item he gets from Sandra.. Once maxed out it's pretty cheesy :p

With the talisman you can use tizo as a solo scorer if you confuse the opponent enough

#

pyre has been an emotional support game that has helped me a lot during hard times.

small zinc
#

I wish I could say the same
Well, I guess I took it too seriously and a load of fictional world regrets just piled on top of my real world regrets 😅

#

Before the first liberation rite it was an awesome escape but then it began to wreck me

midnight hawk
#

pyre is a good game for emotional support, there's loneliness but there's also this beautiful found family aspect where they really support each other and care about each other

#

which like there are so much media where people just fight all of the time

small zinc
#

I fully agree with that but... if you're like me then you start making stupid mistakes that hurt your "beautiful family" and you realize that you're a terrible person no matter which world you are in... I think I didn't really understand some of the characters and their motives (especially whether they even care about liberation or something entirely else) until the epilogue.

#

Basically the fact that the ending can be bittersweet and your decisions are responsible for it isn't very therapeutic.
Not saying it's the game's flaw, I doubt SGG made it with that intention
But I don't know if there is a set of decisions that can cause something that could be considered "an ultimate good ending" or if things aren't going to be perfect no matter what you do. Frankly, before someone writes an answer, I think this would be a spoiler for me, I better don't want to know.

timid silo
#

The narrative about the end of historical cycles has been very comforting to me.

midnight hawk
#

see, the thing is, a lot of people who mean a lot to you will come into your life and will also leave your life. which is very painful and hard, but it's less "this person is gone forever and i suffer" and more "this hurts but im glad i had them in my life" and that's more about what pyre's about. it is hard to say goodbye to people, but sometimes you have to, and that doesn't make you a terrible person. it's just life

@midnight hawk I meant something entirely else, but you're right about this... one of the terrible things about life... well, people that mean a lot to you can't leave your life if they don't come into it in the first place big brain thinking. young folio
#

spoilers are ok in this channel!

velvet birch
#

Dang, okay thanks for letting me know. I'll try to stay away until I finish it then. Just a quick question though: is the PC (Steam) build known to occasionally produce framedrops at random times during in and out of rites sequences? Sometimes I'll notice the cursor chug for unclear reasons while out of a rite, or framedrops that don't seem connected to specific bottleneck moments during rites. I can run recent and graphics intensive games fairly well on this machine so I'm just wondering if there's a known issue that might be causing this that I'm just not aware of?

Lore question while I'm replaying -- is there ever explicit explanation of the relationship between the Scribes' religion and the commonwealth? Like does the commonwealth worship/recognize the scribes? Or are the they and the rites strictly known to/in the downside?

small aspen
#

iirc they're known and respected but people who revere the scribes like the vagabond girl are treated as kinda weird

#

the rites are largely secret out of the downside

cedar adder
#

Makes more sense. On a playthrough now where I'm throwing every liberation rite, and paying a lot more attention to hidden lore. The first time I played I sortof took it for granted that the Scribes' religion was the main faith of the commonwealth, but given both the vagabond girl's backstory and how tightly woven the scribes are to the confirmed-to-be-secret rites, it makes more sense for it to not be the case.

torn bolt
#

iirc the religion of the commonwealth involves worshipping the olden stars! the scribes are seen as important figures, but not as basically demigods like they're seen as in the downside.

cedar adder
#

literally as im having this conversation is where I pass the dialogue where volfred says outright that the Commonwealth was formed from the first exiles freed from the downside.

#

which i guess is why they have the scribes values vibe even when they dont outright know of the rites

I don't remember the judge's name being that, but yeah, later in the game he starts cheering against you and it really annoyed me

forest girder
#

I was jesting he is an arse

wild grail
#

Actually, he cheered against you from the second you “tampered with forbidden knowledge.” ||Midway through the game he does actually warm up to the Nightwings. But by the time Volfred finally takes up the raiments once again, he holds disdain against you for siding with a conspirator against the Commonwealth.||

timid silo
#

Yeah he's an arse from the get-go, I have receipts 😒

small zinc
#

Well, the Scribes kind of failed to realize that the exiles can be actual bad people and letting them rule the Commonwealth isn't the best idea in the world.

muted pebble
#

I think they just wanted to give even Exiles a chance at redemption. No matter who they are and why they were exiled

small zinc
#

But the redemption isn't just about getting back and pretending nothing happened, but also receiving benefits in the social hiearchy on top of that.

#

Which apparently backfired. Well, what really didn't work is the idea that the teamwork and hardships that come with rites will purify the characters, which we can see first hand.

#

The system they designed in their good faith assumed that everyone is like Soliam Murr, basically.

#

So they probably assumed that those who return will be "better people" because of the experience than those who have not been exiled in the first place.

velvet birch
#

Just finished the game. What a banger. Anyone know ||how many different combinations of the "where are they now" text exist? Certainly not 20 or 21 factorial haha||

small zinc
#

I'm pretty sure they are joined together programatically

#

So effectively there might be that many

#

Not completely because not everyone mentions everyone

#

Wait is 20/21 factorial even the number of combinations?

velvet birch
#

Ah yes... Suppose a few are "cul de sacs" like ||Uldmildhe|| while others are more dynamic like ||Moonchild and Almer||

#

Something like that right?

#

Number of exiles + number of enemy trios + reader?

small zinc
#

I'm not sure about the factorial. It think 2^20 for each character if we assume there are 20 characters who can return or stay and they influence each other... well, so that's not exactly the case, but something in that sense

velvet birch
#

Well I was originally counting every combination with at least one distinct different outcome as unique

timid silo
#

It's not that simple - if we're talking ending text, most characters have segments that depend on where they ended up but also who they ended up with

#

And sometimes the main result is a factor too

small zinc
#

Oh right, probably then yes

velvet birch
#

So assume all of yours go free minus 1, Reader stays, all others stay. That's one possible outcome. In that case just shifting the one who stays yields as many "unique" endings as there are characters

small zinc
#

Wait no, still 2^20, under those assumptions (which aren't Pyre reality, yes)

velvet birch
#

But between some just having binary outcomes and the details that @timid silo mentioned, the real number is likely far lower but also less straightforward

small zinc
#

Yeah, we'd have to know all the variables that go into it

velvet birch
#

Hmm I think I see what you mean but...

small zinc
#

variations, 20 characters, 2 outcomes for each, that makes 2^20 possible epilogue cases

velvet birch
#

Yeah, I think you might be right (minus repeats, plus dynamic pairings)

#

So somewhere between 1 and at most 1 million 😅

small zinc
#

Yeah haha. Tbh I don't know how many characters there actually were with the backstories.

timid silo
#

Like, Bertrude has endings with Volfred and Pamitha, Oralech has Volfred and Ti'zo, ae has Jodi, Ti'zo and Almer, etc

small zinc
#

I kinda spoiled myself that the reader can be freed in the final rite but I guess it could be expected
I played the whole game having accepted the he can't
Didn't realize he can until I read about it afterwards

velvet birch
#

Really enjoyed the effort, it's a bonkers endeavour overall. The simple fact that party-based-pseudo-post-apocalyptic-wizard-basketball-visual-novel works at all is a testament to creativity and commitment

#

Yeah, I'd also accepted the Reader would stay. Which is why in the end I sent Oralech up instead. Seemed just.

timid silo
#

I'm pretty sure at least liberated Oralech's text changes between a pacific or bloody revolution (and his remained endings have .. more variance than most, shall we say), and liberated Volfred doesn't become prime minister if too much blood is shed as a consequence of his plan...

small zinc
#

Yeah, it's awesome
If you loved the songs make sure to search for the unused versions, some of it is cool,
Oralech win spoiler uh ||I didn't even get the choice really. I played it as the guy who plays fair so I let Oralech decide (I lost most of the liberation rites...) 😄||

I thought the decision to have the frequency of the Liberation Rites speed up was a really inspired one since it ups the overall tempo of the game and ties neatly into a "dying universe" idea where things are spinning out of control

#

Yeah, it's awesome
If you loved the songs make sure to search for the unused versions, some of it is cool,
I didn't even get the choice really. I played it as the guy who plays fair so I let Oralech decide (I lost most of the liberation rites...) 😄
@small zinc Where are these unused versions? You mean the version of the final song that I didn't get?

small zinc
#

No, unused versions of other songs, on YouTube

Interesting... I'll search for them

"Ursa Idea" is my favourite right now

Neat hearing these early prototype versions... Seems like at some point the loser of a Rite would have died in the flames?

small zinc
#

Fight against Dalbert would suddenly get a lot more intense for sure

velvet birch
#

That might have been a cool way to go with the ritual... But I think that while dramatically it might have been powerful to have one's freedom be the other's death, I think it would undercut the really well-done sports analogy of having to deal with the impact of a loss by carrying on

small zinc
#

The story would be dramatically different... the idea is cool but I think it's better the way it is

velvet birch
#

"No, I missed the 3-point free throw! Let me write out my will..."

small zinc
#

It's kinda ironic that those who would perish in the flame would be those who didn't touch it

velvet birch
#

Haha yes!

#

"Now, at last unto the Flames... Without your raiments."

#

Also a cool fantasy construct - the fact the ||Downside is fully impermeable to all travel except for going down the River, up the Fall, or by being a messenger Imp. After the end of the Rites it becomes its own one-way pocket dimension where only texts can go out. ||

#

Hm... Couldn't ||Ti'zo have just flown out as the messenger imps do? ||

small zinc
#

Tbh I read the "perish in the flame" more like a metaphor to losing... at least I didn't get the "death" vibes from it.
Yeah thought about that too, but ||he's a drive imp, maybe they are bad at flying||

#

||But if they can smuggle stuff up, Ti'zo can't be that heavy||

#

||might be some magic of the place, that all attempts fail||

velvet birch
#

Always possible, yes!

small zinc
#

||shame that Manley the Rocketman failed||

#

If you have a flying wagon, you could try that too after all
