Ah shades
(you left it burning for me)
MOTHER
I'M HEEEEEEERRRRRREEEEEEEEEEE
Darren we love you please sing more
every hour is darren appreciation hour
The wilds themes singlehandedly made me wanna learn harmonica
Speaking of the bastion score a lot of the songs were some of the first I tried to learn on guitar
Which is pretty tough cause Darren, the mad lad, keeps writing songs in Drop C
There was I time when I bought 0.13 gauge strings to my acoustics guitar to learn some of the Bastion songs :) sounded goood, the drop C tuning, so deep. Can do on drop D but it's not the same...
happy 9th birthday to bastion, the best game there ever was
[rucks voice] kid stops and thinks back on it all a spell
š°
Those were the days...
wait that was today???

Happy birthday Bastion I love you
Happy birthday ^^
Iāve played this game so many times and for years I only just noticed that when zulf arrives he gets a tent
and then when he leaves zia steals it
Well she gotta sleep somewhere
and poor kid just gets a bedroll
Well, this ain't your ol' papa's story
Kid wakes up
Notices his watch reads āSuffering oā clockā
Just another day
Do you think like
Any of the gang ever asked if he was ok
Like once
Like do you think Rucks saw him heading for the terminals and maybe offered a glass of tea and a warm blanket first
Probably
he does take naps, occasionally
though usually I would imagine it would go like
(Ruck's): I tell the kid to take a breather. No time, he says. Says he's gotta find the rest of the cores...
Itās a bit more like
Kid just keeps walkin. Like he aināt heard a thing
Itās too bad tho cause his naps tend to be uhh
Deep dreams of more fighting and learning traumatic backstories
Yeah, by holding down the attack button.
I don't use it though. Just gun them down with hitscan riffle.
š§
#self-promotion big Bastion stream tonight! Part of a lil retrospective saga I've been cooking up! Come hang out y'all!
Mmmm
Reaching the wilds for the first time while slingerās song plays is just
Poetic cinema
Also I was streaming bastion this week and when I got to the grand rail I started drawling
I'm not even southern it just kinda
happened
The vibes of that sequence combined with spike in the rail are just too powerful
spike in a rail SLAPS
autoscroll levels get so bold because point lemaigne is an autoscroll level
(you are not point lemaigne though)
No auto scroll level is better than point lemaigne
Actually point lemaigne is the only good autoscroll level
bit trip runner
Wasnāt rux a mancer?
rucks had a variety of jobs, but iirc right before the game he was a mancer
how's the replayability of this game?
you could get through all the content in about 2 playthroughs, but you'd have to know exactly what you're doing to do that
it's mostly small details though so unless you get really into the game it's not particularly replayable beyond ng+
It's around 16-20 hours with getting the all the Steam Achievements I would say. And doing NG+ and Time Score Attack. After that you'll be coming back to it once the nostalgia hits you.
I replay it at least once a year
Usually save it for when Iām not feeling good
Very much a comfort game for me
I try and use different weapon sets too to change it up
Yeah pretty much
A friend made some art depicting my favorite weapon and the main character of the game.
oh HELL yeah! your friend did a great job. but this would fit better over in #fan-works
Ooooo I love that
@ionic pelican there are no boons per se, but you have a greater variety of special moves, you can have two weapons at once, and there are upgrade trees for the weapons
and you never lose upgrades, but you can switch them out for others
it also takes precisely the opposite stance as to gods helping
and yeah, you should almost never die
i died a few times stacking all the idols, but maybe i was just bad lol
that does seem obvious in retrospect lol
On the 19th of September the Bastion Speedrunning community will be doing a Bastion Relay Day, playing every different kind of speedrun category made in Bastion one after the other. Showing off Bastion in its most broken form by community members with hundreds of hours of practice. Complete Bastion in under 5 minutes? Easy. Get first price in most of the Proving Grounds without any upgrades? Easy. Pick up every interactable such as weapons, upgrades and mementos in the game in under 1 hour 20 minutes? Easy!
Even showing off our very own Bastion Randomizer at the end, randomizing level order, weapon and secret skill positions and hopefully enemy locations!
Schedule and where to watch can be found here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1VZqm2HQGOEFnV7nvmoYbT-WRzOFDHzm0_OMHtbwnAhQ

the linked google sheet says on the respective runners twitch channels
Thanks!
I haven't finished Bastion yet lol
how far have you gotten in it
It's sitting in my inventory gathering dust
Like i had two new weapons and I have unlocked like the area where waves of enemies keep coming..
it depends on how you play the game too
i almost always die there cuz i forget the shield exists
Oh yeah I never block
Machete is real spicy in that one
Give em the ol swish swish swish
And they dead
I remember I had a button mash macro binded to M4
Hoo boi
The Kid gave it a few swings
my favorite is the ||bellows. spin around in a circle of fire and everything is dead||
Carbine babey
I know itās slow as all hell but when you get the speed bump you just obliterate everything
Every weapon is bastion is a viable weapon
The cael hammer and the calamity cannon are best imo
I cannot hammer
I dunno why but I simply do not vibe with it
Not being able to move is real frustrating
yes
but i like some weapons better than others
I always have a thing for big weapons
aka that stupid fire weapon
It bleeds into my D&D games as well
the pistols/rifle and pike/hammer were my favorite weapons
Instructions unclear, rapid fire mortar engaged
mortar absolutely slaps
Pike and Mortar was my go-to for all NG+ stuff, alas they are a short-lived pair in the story mode
Pike/Fang Repeater gang rise up
Come to think of it, maybe the the homing hyperspeed darts from the repeater inspired the ||poison|| darts in Hades

the carbine is personally my favorite
hammer time gang
Musket and repeater
I've decided I'm going to go achievement hunting for both transistor and bastion to try and complete them
And pyre now I guess since I'm only missing 5 achievements anyways
Can't wait to be a proud 100%er of all supergiant
dont forget about the turret achievement
bynn the breaker has SUCH a good intro
it really does
DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN
nice
Iāll know your pain after I beat transistor and move on to bastion
i could barely beat it with no idols invoked
bastion is one of the games that i refuse to get all the achievements because of those last 2 ones
Gel canister and mortar carried me all the way
the mortar always felt so slow to me
With the speed upgrades it becomes pretty non-existent.
Honestly, my favorite loadouts are always Machete or Pike + Carbine or Musket.
Also, real quick, ||is the thing that determines immunity to the Calamity being unconscious? After going to Who Knows Where for Zia, Zulf, and the Kid, it seems the correlation with all of them is waking up after the Calamity. So are the effects avoided only if you're asleep?||
If that's the case it's really surprising the Kid never comes across any cats lol
the animals prob felt that stuff was wierd
the calamity was some kind of volcanic activity, and venn hacked it so it wouldn't affect ura dens
so the thing that probably saved them was having enough earthwork between them and doom
zia was in the basement of her home, zulf was in the bottom of the war monument
that just leaves the kid who may have been protected by parts of the rippling walls
However, the thing is, the place the Kid was sleeping was wide open. No door whatsoever. And while it may have been volcanic in nature, it most definitely wasn't just lava due to the way it impacted the environment, and how it appears in the Terminals. It seems more like a 'volcanic infection' more than anything else.
I'm guessing it's something like a pyroclastic flow
seems pompeii inspired
and the door could've been destroyed after the calamity hit
or the room thrown out of the building it was in
If that were the case, it wouldn't make sense for it to be so immaculate though. Or for the Kid to have not moved at all from his bedroll. Or for the blanket covering the very large hole in the wall to be fine.
tbf everything floating also doesn't make much sense
The floating indicates that the weapon may have caused some kind of singularity, or other event that warped the very state of the matter it interacted with
yeah, it's mentioned in the colford cauldron level that the mancers were up to something
Well no, it's shown that the world of Bastion has advanced in a world where some form of magic exists with science. Given the information we have from the quarry, Cores and Shards are either conduits for this magic or are capable of gravity alteration to some extent.
Would also explain how the Bastion is able to ||travel through time||
Alternatively, they've developed tech that easily warps spacetime to a degree. Overall, it's clear that the world of Bastion differs drastically from our own.
u right
i forgot about that part
shame the kid never tells us anything about himself
Yeah
I guess thatās the point of a silent protagonist, we get to mold who the kid is
Although there is the theory that ||Rucks is the Kid from a different timeline.||
Iāve never heard that one before. Gives me ||bioshock infinite vibes||
also you don't have to spoiler tag everything, this channel is spoiler ok
very considerate of you though
Well yeah. I don't wanna ruin it for peeps who haven't played it through yet.
i just muted the channels for games i hadn't played
I am having major trouble with Zulf's who knows where
I've beaten Zia's and the Kid's, but haven't tried Rucks and I just cannot get through Zulf's
The trick for his is to focus a lot on evasion more than anything else. Keep a distance. You're best bets are the Army Carbine and Scrap Musket, with either Trip Mines, Hand Grenades, or Squirt Lure as your Secret Skill.
Alright, I was using mortar, carbine, and trip mines so I think I had the right idea
Musket would def help with the stupid ground-diggers and poison eyes
(And I'm going for the 10 idol achievement in case you guys didn't assume so already)
Oh yeah, if you're doing that, then you need the Squirt Lure or Gel Canister. Garmuth and Olak are gonna be you're main problems, given that all of Zulf's enemies are already hard to hit.
Oh ok
Ok so beat it with the musket and portal turret, but now I am seriously having trouble with those big bulls that come rushing at you in Rucks
@merry oracle
Oh, them? You usually want the Pike or the Bow, specifically if you apply a slowing effect to them.
The Pike actually deals REALLY high damage, so it's good for keep-away, plus you can use it at a range.
Alright
I was using the pike before but I just had to change it from 50% crit damage to dealing knockback
Way better now
That helps too
Now I'm stuck with those oh so annoying blue spike bushes
For them you wanna shield and get behind one. Then, since they don't take damage from each other, you can use the one you're behind as a shield while you block it's projectiles. Then you don't have to worry about the others as you wait for the opening.
Yeah it was moreso when there was a guy attacking me while there were 5 of those spread all around, making it impossible to avoid lol
I made it to having only 8 waves left
This is honestly making me pissed
I have gotten to the 2nd to last one 3 times now and lost
Leechade and Bastion Bourbon are an absolute amazing synergy
And don't worry about Zulf's dream. You'll get it eventually
It's the Stranger's dream you want to be worried about...
I already got Zulf's dream which is why I'm now on stranger's
I literally just died on the final wave
I'm done for tonight
I don't usually rage quit, but I'm too salty to keep trying
Unlike the pyre achievement with all titan stars, this is like a 25 min commitment each time I try so it feels really bad when I die like that
come back fresh and rested tomorrow
Yep will do
also i recommend taking all the shield boost drinks
Alrighty
Is the score attack achievement hard at all?
Since that'll be the final one I go for
not really if you have gel canister and get to the right level
I'm about halfway to level 10 so I think I'll be set
halfway in xp that is
oh ok
I heard kid's dream is pretty good for racking up points
yeah the dreams go really fast so you can keep combo
I won't be doing stranger or zulf, but I'll probs do the other 2 in score attack
Is the score attack achievement hard at all?
You can theoretically get the achievement in Kid's dream alone.
You can easily get a mil with all but olak and acobi turned on
You just have to make sure you never drop the combo
There is a really great guide that shows you how to get it
I do disagree with the potions it gives though
Dreadrum is almost useless to me
I think the most essential ones are - Cham-pain, Leechade, Bastion bourbon, whale ale, Lifewine and bull brandy
Thanks!
I played Bastion about 500 hours, a lot of it was score attack on the stranger's dream tweaking my loadout trying to get the highest score I could with all idols enabled. the tl;dr is that the essentials are Brusher's Pike with Barbed Spearhead & Galleon Mortar with Bomb Barrage. These are the only weapons that hit through Garmuth and Olak while doing enough damage to kill mobs as fast as you need to. Tonics: Leechade, Cham-Pain, Lifewine, Doomshine, Bull Brandy are strongly recommended
I didn't write a steam guide for the full setup, just a reddit post that nobody read. maybe I should move it into a steam guide
Looks like with the achievement you don't have to use 10 idols so in that case I would recommend disabling Olak and using the Fang Repeater instead of the Galleon Mortar
Olak is the biggest score attack killer for sure. Looks like this guy got 6mil with fewer idols, that's impressive. my best was just under 4 mil with ten idols
Oh, that 6 mil is a total of all score attacks, not just the stranger's dream? hmmmm lol
YESSS
I didn't realize how much health those final two guys had
so I watched a video before attempting the last wave again
and they literally used two bomb barrages on each of them
I used 3 of my health tonics on just the last wave
So happy to get that over with
So glad I found this now lol
This guide will show you how to get over 1 million points in Score Attack mode.
Turret madness
and he's only level 2
Nice dude, grats
and yeah bomb barrage is really good esp. if you are stacking crit chance effects you can get absurd amounts of damage
Now I've 100%ed all 3 completed supergiant games
I'm a true fan
Can't wait for Hades 1.0
Pog
Grats! Welcome to the 100% gang

oh congrats!
One day I will 100% bastion... One day
We shall wait for you until then
Soon...
Why is no audio playing for bastion iOS?
I just realized the Kid's liver is gonna be absolutely destroyed
the Kid drinks all the time
raging alcoholic
He's constantly drunk.
protagonist of bastion
Oh okay I was kinda scared
Why is no audio playing for bastion iOS?
ping me if you have the answer
He's just stumbling left and right and slurring his words all the time
Secretly none of it even happened after he found Zia, he just blacks out and the rest is an alcohol-induced dream
i mean
he basically does that a little bit later after that
same
AKA I put a laundry hamper on top of him
you softlocked the cat?
Yes
he just wants to copy what you're doing
Maybe at least some of them are medicinal liqueurs
And with Stabsinthe, he must be taking a swig between every hit
Buuuut clearly not all
The level where you get the breaker's bow, steam version, is super laggy for me
that's odd
Yeah
I only have the Score Attack achievement left. Any advice?
gel canister and kids dream
Absolutely destroy kids dream
You can literally get the achievement solely from there
This guide helped me a lot
I second that ^
same here
Absolutely destroy kids dream
@halcyon crest >> things that should not be quoted out of context
I'm replaying Bastion now after I don't know how many years of not touching it (or many other games for that matter), and boy. First of all, what a thrill to experience it all again. This time it really struck me though just how rapidly it introduces new weapons, and how short especially the early levels are. Has the team ever told us if that was conscious and/or intentional?
In about a week, on the 19th of September the Bastion Speedrunning community will be doing a Bastion Relay Day, playing every different kind of speedrunning category/ruleset made for Bastion one after the other. that's always the saddest thing
i forgot that those guys can die during that scene when i played it for a second time last year
they died on my first playthrough and I didn't realize they could actually get saved until a long time later
im pissed picking to carry zulf didnt change the ending and i hope restoration is the way to go for ng+
yeah you can leave him to do (bad dont do this) or you can show mercy and bring him back to the bastion, giving him a chance for redemption
resto and evac don't change ng+ much, but it makes more sense story-wise to go resto -> evac bc of some of rucks's dialogue
I've never left zulf but I can totally see why someone would
the problem with saving zulf
is that you can't wreak vengeance upon the ura for killing your pets
š„
i feel like the calamity did that plenty
retroactive vengeance? š¤
i mean it was like "vengeance" for the war
No
The calamity was a failed experiment. It's not enough.
Those fools killed my pets.
MY. PETS.
I must destroy the Ura personally.
yeah genocide is cool i guess
perpetrating genocide over the deaths of non-human creatures is super reasonable and definitely not a horrific response
do you really want to make jokes about this
no undertale-esque metapunishments
hey dude what the hell is wrong with you
would you care to explain the question?
sure. why do you think genocide jokes are remotely funny or appropriate.
it wasn't a genocide joke at all
The calamity was a failed experiment. It's not enough.
it's okay because you can restore the world and commit genocide again
and those statements were.......?
the first one was referring to the calamity as a punishment for killing my pets
they're not related, the calamity happened first
i know this, and i'm telling you saying 'this entire group of people deserve to die because they killed my pets' is in incredibly poor taste.
as is 'oh boy, so glad this game lets me commit genocide without making me feel bad about it'.
hey friends, this might be a good time to change the subject.
anyway one thing i always found funny in bastion is that the kid goes to save zia twice but every time she's totally fine and just chilling
the kid: gets his butt kicked by the wilds
zia: had a nice tent set up, relaxing, just singing
She landed in a lucky spot I guess
or... Zia is actually an ass-kicking Ura fighter and she just repelled the wilds monsters but she just let The Kid do the dirty work the rest of the game because it was amusing
zia is the most powerful member of the bastion
ba dum tsss
Thank

Song: "Twisted Streets", from the Bastion Original Soundtrack.
Composed...
What do the animals look like in the game?
you can get a squirt, pecker, bull, anklegator and a turret from the portal crossover thing
the wiki should have some pics of each
Ahh thank you just needed the names
Thank you. Maybe I will email the art director or the composer to see if they have an image
Good luck
Bastion has always been my favorite video game. Its worldbuilding and the way it creates its own unique pantheon of gods inspires me as a writer. I want to build a world as vivid and amazing as Bastion's is.
I only found Bastion at the beginning of this year and it became one of my favorite games right away
The narrator, the story, the music, it's so good
glad you found it! it's really a good one
Yeah, unfortunately, I play on Xbox so I haven't been able to play pyre, transistor or Hades.
how did that portal crossover ever come about anyway? It was so random... welcome, but random
Valve was doing crossovers with many many steam indies back in the day
(Technically bastion isn't indie but yk)
ah I see
yeah not "indie" but I think it was their first game right? and not exactly a major big budget stuio
Yeah it was their first game
what do you mean not indie
Indie means self published, bastion was originally published by WB iirc
nowadays though people just say indie when they mean small studio or non mainstream
Actually, indie has a few definitions.
Indie can also refer to a game studio in many contexts
Generally it simply means that the game didnt recieve funding from a major studio
I think one official definition defines it as how much of the budget went in to advertisement, even.
I just finished Bastion for the first time a few weeks ago. Such a fun game, and it was really fun to revisit after playing Hades and seeing how Hades is built on the foundation Bastion laid. And that ending
I chose to ||evacuate, btw. No NG+ for me (yes, I know they patched that out)||
that's the better ending choice in my book
glad you liked the game.......it was the first video game i finished so it'll always be my favorite
oh yeah absolutely
tbh if i'm going to replay i frequently just replay on no sweat mode........i'm just here for the vibes
though maybe now that i'm good at hades i should try to clear out some achievements š¤
Yes! I had a good friend help me choose the right equipment / dieties for my preferred play style
I have come so close to 100% but never all the way
I think I'm finally gonna try this year
I did the same, played it a couple times but couldn't get into it. Then suddenly got really into it and spent a whole weekend completing it
I need to one day replay this game and possibly try the invocations
You can tell how they grew as a studio in their "difficulty modifier" design in later games. Some of them are rough because they make certain weapons objectively useless.
all of this hades stuff with the fast paced combat and the dodge and shield and the weapon modifications is just really making me want to play bastion again for the first time in years
The things that worked well really really shine through in Hades but I would say bastion still holds up what a smash hit
yeah bastion combat is definitely rougher than hades's but it's still fun
Does anyone known if there will be a rerelease of the Bastion Soundtrack on CD?
no such plans announced as of late
you can do it by yourself
Just started playing Bastion and wanted to ask. Does the game save only when you enter a new location?
Basically, yes.
Is there a way to restore my progress? I just finished the game but accidentally started a new one... now the process is gone š¦
nope
Just finished bastion I think ima buy transistor
dew it
i saw bastion on the app store and
well ppl say hades is a lot like it, sooooo download time ššš
they definitely play the most similarly
Yeah, a lot of foundational gameplay can be found in Bastion
And a lot of foundational Logan Cunningham
it's also the best game, in the world,
That's a dangerous phrase to say
implying that all ssg games aren't the best game in the world
other sgg games are also the best in the world, but bastion is the bestest
bahaha, i could only hear/see a little snippet of the intro since the ipad was outta battery, but I'm already IMMERSED
hmmmmmmm
babs i think you really like bastion
Who doesn't
me? like bastion? can't believe you would say that
but bastion is just a raally fun game and it was very useful for me when i was an insomniac and had no internet so it was something i could play while i waited for the sun to rise
it's really pretty too so far like
wow :0 i def wanna doodle it already
hell yeah!!
I want a webcomic about ||Rucks, Zulf, the Kid, and Zia finding more survivors after the Evacuation ending.||
||sees Zulf's pipe
"Ooooh what's that-AAAAAA"||
lol
Kid smokes pot, that's the plot of Bastion
Don't forget all the naps
Bastion was one of the first games I ever bought
I fell in love with the demo
Windbags were my band tho, 1cm tall and could ruin your no-hit.
ikr
The Kid is an innocent bean
i like letting him just
lie down for a whiiile after he smacks onto the ground
||LITTLE ANKLEGATOR BABY||
spoilers cause we have someone playing for the first time
||okay taking bets, will it live or die||
||IT LIVED--||
aaaa i just finished the game ;7; good stuff good stuff hhhh
Which ending?
uhhh zia
||Rescue or Abandon tho?||
||rescue xD i was curious about abandon so i might go for restore/abandon in ng+, though like... that's a kinda sad note to end on bahahah||
also im curious :0
what weapons did u peeps use?? I usually just went with dueling pistols+ hammer/machete and then had the squirt lure most of the time
bellows/mortar was my go to
oooo ok ok I'll try it next time
BELLOWS WAS COOL
bellows was one of my favorite, i think i did bellows/rifle for the last parts
for the longest time i was a machete/bow person but last time I played i was really fond of pike/musket
Machete/bow or bellows were the ones I mainly went with, but I tend to mix and match for fun and in case the weapons got lonely for not being used.
I think my usual was Hammer/Repeater or Hammer/Bow. It's been a while though
what weapons did u peeps use??
Hammer and Bow were my "main" weapons, they are the only ones I fully upgraded. The skills I used were kinda all over the place, but I eventually settled with the hammer smash that does good AoE damage.
my first playthrough i think i was big on machete/carbine, but my most recent one (which was not that recent, i should replay this game) i was actually loving carbine/dueling pistols
god the carbine is so good though
favorite weapon hands down
I liked machete for a while, but when I finished NG+ and got a little funky I really liked repeater/bellows for projectiles that could hit anything.
Then probably mirror shield or something for the bellows
I also liked the pike when I needed a melee flavor
I'm here to Stan the Breaker's Bow. @ me if you have questions on why it's the single weapon you need in ANY GAME
Just started playing this game. Really love the music and narration. Only frustration I have is in certain melee situations where I get thrown up in the air....and then again....and then again.
I can't remember how I managed that, but I did somehow
i think i rolled in midair to help with that
or maybe it was just the panicking that nade me think it worked xD
rolling midair does make you do recovery but it's not as good as actually dodging on the ground
just gotta learn enemy patterns
they have very specific attack timings
Thanks! Will keep that in mind
also you can instakill a lot of them by knocking them off the stage
knockback spear is very good against lunkheads
Lunkheads are just more annoying Greatshields from Hades
change my mind
hmmmm less-annoying greatshields from Hades maybe?
the shields in Hades are easily the one thing I dislike running into
same
lunkheads are super easy with bellows
Everything with armor become super easy with bellows. Like those funky armored ||flowers||
Man, doing the Who knows where stuff with the right weapons can make you feel like a badass.
i love the who knows where levels
what a great way to deliver backstory
but also, if you don't play them i think you lose some really critical information
Not true at all
The information given in who knows where is purely flavor and not necessary to understand the over-arching plot of bastion
But I think Zia's dream is more important than the rest
Since it talks about her dad and all
I heard there are different endings
no, i think zulf's backstory is also really important to understanding his character and motivation
and zia's as you said talks about her father
if anything i'd say you can skip the kid's the easiest
@atomic cargo Technically yes, but it all depends on the last choice and doesn't need any fancy tricks to get before hand
There are technically 3 different endings (||Turning back time with or without Zulf shouldn't make a difference||)
@wet bone The stranger's dream is completely unnecessary for the story
yeah, true; it's also ng+ only so i didn't count it
The soundtrack for it is immaculate
Agreed
yeah the dreams just give a bit of backstory on some characters, and somewhat vaguely at that
Where is the savefile located?
ooooohhhh i wanna make such a dumb joke here
but it's probably gonna get me
||it's probably in your documents > saved games > bastion ||
Only Hades is in Documents/Saved Games, no Bastion there. Just wanna keep my "completed" savefile in case I ever want to start from the beginning.
out of all the supergiant soundtracks, "Setting Sail, Coming Home" from Bastion is the one that manages to always hit me in the feels every time I listen to it
@tropic spruce You can change save files ingame
There are 4/5 save slots if i recall
ohhh, that's good then
It's a bit unintuitive though - you switch between them under Help & Options > Profiles
setting sail, coming home kicks my butt every time
Can I do the 10 idol dream achievements in Score Attack Mode?
I've done Kid's and Zia's dreams with 10 idols on my normal NG+ completed savefile already, just wanna know if Score Attack mode messes with the other two, since it says it starts a new game with everything already unlocked.
Speaking of, what were your go-to weapons when going for those achievements? Mine were the gallean mortar and the brusher's pike.
Mostly the mortar though.
man, it's been a hot minute.
I remember abusing the bone repeater quite a bit. Fully upgraded with homing bolts and the spin attack, it's quite dangerous.
But I don't remember if I managed any 10-idol dreams...
Guess I never did manage a full 10-idol run. Hmm. Leastways I never got the achievement.
you should give them a go
I should. I've been replaying the game on switch lately, kinda... got sidetracked with the hades release...
understandable
Started playing Score Attack mode. Didn't think it would be starting a new game without keeping anything I've done on my save file, but that's fine. You know what they say. "If we can build, we can rebuild".
the 10-idol dreams aren't that bad until you get to the stranger's from what i remember
the stranger's dream with 10 idols is a grueling endurance nightmare and its the only idol related achievement i haven't managed to get
yeah
(i used pike / carbine for reference)
is it just me btw or is the actual contact distance of the machete weirdly out of touch with the visuals? it always strikes shorter distance than it feels it should to me...
is it really?
i've played bastion a bunch of times and most of them were with machete + musket combo and i never felt like it was out of place
but then again - it's been a while
||machete + musket is the best combo, fite me
||
i'm pretty sure I stuck with that combo for most of my playtime too back in the day š I think i'll try to mix it up for this nostalgic replay though. is there any consensus around here regarding balancing btw? i.e. are there any just flat out better or worse weapons? || I remember finding the bellows, repeater and the revolver weirdly weak||
dual revolvers?
bueno

flamethrower?
eeh - not so much
i mean - i remember it being useful, just not as fun to use
which is a case for most flamethrowers in video games, now that i think about it
actually I can agree on that. I can't recall a game with a fun flamethrower
the only weapon i straight up found pointless was the spear
it's basically a machete... but slower and clunkier
also
||calamity canon + mortar got the best quote from rucks ||
ooh need to make sure I try that when I get there, I don't remember that quote
The bellows's primary usefulness comes from the fact that it's natively perfectly armor piercing, which means it's perfect to use against stuff like Lunkheads or Stinkeyes or Wallflowers that have block effects. But that's kind of overshadowed because some other weapons get armor piercing.
I dunno about consensus, but the repeater is pretty sick when fully upgraded. Homing bolts upgrade turns the spin shot special attack into a real killer. I'm fond of the pistols, too, but mostly on gamepad controls where you have that strong autoaim.
Stinkeyes are like the worst enemies, sometimes they just instakill you if you aren't careful.
Yeah it can be rough, which is why it's nice to have an armor piercing weapon to deal with them. The problem is that I like the pistols better and one of the top-tier upgrades for pistols gives them piercing as well
alternatively, the pike gets pierce too
stinkeyes dropping grenades
what's that one god that makes everyone drop little bombs when dying?
sounded like a micia type of thing to me, but apparently it's acobi š
i remember enjoying carbine as well! tbh i don't really recall having an absolute favourite weapon when i last played it (like, four years ago or so). of course the calamity canon is memorable, but tbh a little boring and cumbersome. i'll update you when i've played through it again and found my new favourite
if you didn't do Pike + Scrap musket combo have you even lived life to the fullest
Pike was good for moving out of danger then attacking from a safe distance and for high damage, then you got the musket for blowing away crowds
knockback on pike is also a great upgrade
it's a strong effect and the weapon is fast, accurate, and decently ranged
notes taken, combinations shall be tried š
just started playing bastion after just holding onto it for like two years lol... i was missing out
I just started playing bastion. There is this glitch line across my screen. Is that glitch line purposely there, because it isn't on any other of my sites.
nvm fixed it
must be something with my resolution
i thought it was on purpose because like the bastion is like "oh there is very little people left" "the world is crazy right now" so i thought they added it for specials effects. lol i am so stupid.
Nah, youāre not, thereās plenty of stuff like that in games, just not this one. Glad you figured it out
thanks also how do you roll??? i kinda forgot
nvm
thanks loading screen
loading screen tips are actually very useful in this gameš unlike other games
supergiants bless you for making useful loading screen tips
they also have quite clever little control reminders - in my last session I kept getting hit by projectiles and at some point it figured I might need a reminder I can pull out my shield with shift š it was correct
I love this discord, talking to you guys reminded me of why bastion made such a strong impression on me the first time I played it. and tbh, it was the second game that really blew my mind - before then, i had just been playing games mainly out of boredom. then came Braid with its obscure narrative, and straight after that Bastion, and suddenly I was sold on indiegames. by the time Transistor came out, supergiant had me as a sucker for anything they did...
YES, I completed Bastion
https://imgur.com/Z8Yewzx
played the game for only 21 hours, but I enjoyed every second of it.
A question; did Darren Korb provide grunts for the Kid? The more I play Hades, the more Zagās grunts remind me of the Kid
@warped wagon I haven't heard a mention of it in any of the interviews or making-ofs, but it's definitely possible of course
they also have quite clever little control reminders - in my last session I kept getting hit by projectiles and at some point it figured I might need a reminder I can pull out my shield with shift š it was correct
@tawdry briar yes, i forgot how to roll and then the loading screen tips told me "space = roll"
also thanks for reminding me to actually use my shield
it's the Hidden Challenge Mode, a.k.a. forgetting basic controls after weeks of having no time to play
https://i.imgur.com/pY6lDxW.png feeling like the kid after that one
biggest advice i can give for anyone doing the idol achievements: ||bring the squid lure||
does Bastion have bosses?
yeah
how many?
uhhh
there's usually at least one really big encounter each stage
sometimes it's just a lot of enemies and sometimes it's one really big one
ah, thanks
they're not super dramatic fancy bosses like in transistor or something though
gtk
bosses are usually just bigger versions of enemies you may have already seen / will see more of
also leechade is a passive, not a black tonic skill. did use it though.
oooh thanks
you'll know them if they get pointed out by the narration. ||they'll show up again at some point in Who Knows Where, if you decide to do that.||
gtk
i'm aware of the difference between leechade and skills, but i think that helps more than the skills
like that would be my number one recc
tbh i'd just assume people would have that equipped regardless if they're going for 10 idols
fair it is just that good
||squirt lure also may or may not benefit from your equipped passives. don't quote me on that, but i did see it spitting thorns, and the turret died way faster when i (briefly) experimented with that.||
ooh that would be cool to see
also would that be the lasery kind?
it would explain a lot
||the portal turret from the gel canister. it shreds enemies if you place it right, but it can't survive for long on its own||
yeah you have to group those
@hollow pilot interesting to see the squirt lure recommended for Who Knows Where - during the regular gameplay I didn't feel like it helped me as much as the simple "smack all the things" specials, so I probably wouldn't even have tried it
they're great morale boosters
that or the decoy, i'd use them for the same reasons
Does anyone know if Bastion is coming to EGS?
I am at a point where is says that once i do go there, i cannot come back
@atomic cargo All the best!
any advice before going there?
If you've made it this far, you'll be perfectly fine!
Apart from that, make sure to think long and hard on any choices you might make
i finished bastion and I quite liked it. I really like the Kid
funny huh, silent protagonists are so easy to like xD
Also I just love how the kid can just casually swing around ||A massive Battering Ram twice his size and weight, at least||like it's nothing
Kid is stronk boi
Okay I finished Bastion for the first time
Only Pyre left
And gosh, this game didn't age a bit
It's been 10 years since realese and it plays fantastic
and if you don't touch it for a few years and then try it again, it'll be almost the same fun again š
Now I wait for discount on Transistor on Switch to play it again
It was my first sg game and I loved it. Want to replay it once again
Especially after live concert that happened
I am listening to soundtracks from all of the games non stop for past 2 weeks
I'm a little sad that they don't have plans to port Pyre to Switch. I would love to play it on that platform since I havent finished it
I wonder how SGG decides which platforms to port to... based on how they said they decided against pyre online multiplayer (they said they felt it goes against how the game should be experienced), I could imagine their main consideration is how the game would play on the platform and how well that works. I don't have a Switch, so dunno if that way of thinking even makes sense to reason against porting Pyre to Switch... it could also be that due to how it's built, Pyre would be much harder to port than their other games, and they just couldn't invest that much time in it
They said in reddit Q&A that Pyre needs to be rebuild from scratches so it could work on Switch, that's why they don't make it yet. They said there is possibility that they will do it, but they are gonna need time, which they didn't have since they put most of it in Hades. I hope that after seeing how big success Hades is they will invest in some more people to make that port. I think many folks would love it since Switch is fantastic to play RPGs on
Switch has every SGG games except Pyre which makes me super sad since I would love to play it comfortably in my bed or on the couch
I see, yeah I missed most of the reddit q&as because I've only started using reddit recently š but sounds like my guess was accurate
I can link it for you if you want
Pyre is more. Hmmm weird in terms of gameplay. Transistor gameplay is more similar to Bastion but it's "turn based". Both games are top notch, but i think transitor has more similar narration to Bastion than Pyre
@rose heron my recommendation would be bastion - transistor - pyre, because it allows you to see how they progressed as a studio and puts hades into a bit of context with their history. but any order works of course, they're all great games with amazing soundtracks
ah fair that makes sense
which one's the turn-based one
or the one with turn-based aspects
Transistor
š
@woeful dew would be nice to see that q&a actually if you have it handy! gonna have to be tomorrow though for me, it's past my bed time š
visual novel crossed with basketball specifically
if you've seen any ace attorney games it's a similar style
"Wizard Bastketball" I believe is the official genre of Pyre
but with self immolation instead of law
@tawdry briar Okay, I'm gonna send you it in the DM
man in retrospect bastion was incredibly influential on me & my interest in game dev
i was 7 when it came out and the reactive narration & tiles coming up to build the world were maybe the coolest thing i'd ever seen in a game and i didn't realize that was a thing that normal people could do until my dad told me it was a seven person team
i think bastion is pretty dated now but man it blew my mind then
The big thing about Bastion, to me, is that it is a good look at just how much weight Supergiant's absolutely stellar writing/art/music/sound design can carry, up to and including Logan's incredible voice.
It's the kind of game I feel would have been lost in the constant shuffle of decently-polished indie action titles without the things that made it unique, and the things that made it unique were not really gameplay-centric things
Glad to say I have today joined the ranks of people having 100% achievements on Bastion.
Next stop - Transistor.
I have to give Supergiant my thanks
Never have I ever felt so much emotional pain and joy in both endings
Besides, it's hard to ignore such an explicit message from this game - to move on, so it was extra painful to end the game with resstored Bastion
Last time I cried was 12 years ago, but damn this game made me shed some
But thats why games are no longer a simple pastime activity, but an art form
Thanks again, Supergiant crew, and a special thanks for Darren Korb... I hope some see this

is it just me or the hammer is inconsistent at actually hitting enemies?
like, not point blank but at the edge of it

maybe
its been a while since i played bastion
I think so too - both the hammer and the machete actually for me feel a bit off in terms of their actual hit distance and the "feel" of how far it should hit
I like how Steam hasn't tracked any of my hours for Bastion despite the fac tI beat it like 4 times on my trip to Australia
were you offline?
i'd assume that based on the fact that they were on a trip
steam doesn't record offline hours
yea, that's what I thought too
I like how Steam hasn't tracked any of my hours for Bastion despite the fac tI beat it like 4 times on my trip to Australia
@limpid wasp i played mostly in offline, it unlocked achievements when I played after going online but playtime wasn't recorded
0.1 minutes tho
lol, i have 18. something recorded playtime
It's showing up in my "try this next" que
wait then you don't have the trading cards either ig?
Hey folks, I absolutely love the art from the OST and I've been trying to find a version without the track titles on it. Google image search hasn't come up with anything so I thought this might be a good place to ask. Any help is greatly appreciated.
i don't believe there is one
Alrighty, thanks for letting me know. I'll just have to do a little photoshoppin'
i now remember why i couldnt get into this game
can't stand the mouse utilization in controls
the hands when wielding dueling pistol and war machete at the same time...
Need a hug?
im alright. Just a bit exhausted.
Bastion Bourbon would be probably better, but you can't always get what you want...
how's the buttons tho? need some oil on those weary hinges?
so I've just picked up Bastion, and I feel like I managed to softlock myself during the tutorial...I can't get back over from this platform
anyone know what to do? xD
I guess just restart the tutorial
oh yeah i don't..... think you're supposed to be there
yeah i think all you can really do is restart
how are you liking it so far?
it's fun! Combat isn't quite as fluid as I'd like, but I'm attributing that to me not being used to it
the proving grounds are actually super helpful
cleared the bow one on my third try, and I'm about to clear the gun one
falling off the side felt a bit funky at first, but that's more "getting used to controls" than anything else
nvm I'm not about to clear the gun one that's hard xD
so I've just picked up Bastion, and I feel like I managed to softlock myself during the tutorial...I can't get back over from this platform
@open python Haha wow, I was purposefully trying to bug out the tutorial and didn't manage that one š have fun rebuilding the world
thanks ^.^
I remember the first time around it took me ages to clear the breaker's bow challenge... and even now during my "nostalgia playthrough", I keep falling off the edge. I blame part of it on the fact that keyboard controls only allow 8 directions of movement š
the bow one wasn't too bad, since there's no time limit
now, the sword one? there are some platforms I'm pretty sure I'm not supposed to be on, because it's nearly impossible to get off of them xD
alright, gonna have to stop for now, but that was fun ^.^ I picked up Bastion, Transistor, and Pyre when they went on sale and I plan on playing through all of them
you're in for a treat, they're hands down my favourite games of all time
How do you keep managing to get on those platforms in the first place? XD
uhhh
I spam dodge?
it's the platform on the far left, the only way off of it is by timing your dodge mid-swing, it seems (already closed the game, or I'd have a better screenshot, I grabbed this one from google)
as the devs can attest from the number of Hades bug reports I sent in, I'm good at breaking games xD
ah yes, I've always felt like the dodge roll messes with the "on solid ground or not" detection
yeah dodge spamming can get you into some wacky situations
Isn't Bastion like 12$ on steam...?
$15 right now, it looks like
wait wtf
im getting scammed then
it says 25 for me
on steam
ok nvm then ig
guess my steam just hates me
im in na
woah, that pipe was nuts
Usually the price differences are due to region yeah
literally took you to Who Knows Where huh?
breezin through š
is that fast?
who knows, speed would be progress/time and I have no information about one of those two variables š but compared to me either you're fast or you have a lot more time
sounds about right, you've got a few more hours to go š
Yup ^.^
Done for the night, really enjoying it so far
Can I revisit places I've been to?
Just realized I hadn't tried
Not in standard mode
There's a mode called... Point Attack...? After you finish the game for the first time I believe. You can revisit all the places there and try to complete the level with a highest score (which counts toward Steam achievement)
Mm, sounds good!
At some point I'd want to play through all of the levels with each weapon pairing
that sounds like a test of endurance
Yeah, definitely something long-term
there's 12 weapons = 66 weapon combinations, and 21 levels, so that's 1386 games
12?
oops sorry for spoiling
yes bastion never stops introducing new weapons even till literally the penultimate level or so
that's also my current fav
I liked shotgun as well and... what weapons you have unlocked so far?
Hammer, bone-rapid-fire-thing, machete, shotgun, bow, dual pistols, I think that's all?
ok, so I won't spoil it for you, but you should got that weapon soon š

I think the time for me to play Bastion again is coming...
I'm also really happy I finally know what a squirt is
Squirt are very adorable and make for good pets
Squirtness
i love how Zulf has a little squirt companion in the evac ending, wearing an apron
i want that
there's a reason we have squirt emotes and not gasfella emotes
We got
Playing bastion for the first time after a lot of Hades, and Iām reminded how much I enjoy it when the game encourages me to mix up which things I use. The proving grounds help a bit, but in general Iām glad that this is something more commonly used in the last 10 years
just maxed out the upgrades for the Repeater to give it || a ton of ammo + mega rapid fire + seeking || and woooo boy that's crazy
fang repeater w seeking is Good
I've also got all but one weapon unlocked
congrats on coming so far!
ye!
you're not that far from the end
actually i could be wrong it's been a hot minute since i've played this
I'm only 5 and half hours in! Good thing there's apparently another mode after
you might have a bit longer then! i think bastion is like ~10 hrs?
but also bastion is a very good game and it's always a delight to see other people enjoy it
yup!
most likely, once I clear the main story I'm gonna head over to Pyre, and then Transistor
unless I just got the order wrong
then Transistor after Bastion
which is good anyway, I can use it for research for one of my current projects
oh what's your project?
we're making a game with a time-slow mechanic
oh cool!
|| oh snap the Bastion just got smashed up ||
alright, I think I'm at the last area, looks much bigger so I'm gonna call it a night
yeah I think you're two thirds of the way in now š
XD
That makes me happy!
That there's still more
For reference, || I just brought Zia back from the ice place ||
getting tense now then, keep going š
Finished my first playthrough. I was doing a thing where I invoked as many idols in the shrine whenever I could, but ended up turning that off for the last level and ripped through it very quickly. On to transistor š
Congrats! š
uhhhhhhh
|| I just accidentally clicked on one of the "Zulf" options before I finished reading them, any way to undo? ||
which would've been...not that far back...hmm
there wouldn't happen to be an easy way to dupe my save so I can do both? >:3
Not that I know of
welp
|| screw Zulf, then, apparently >:3 ||
|| OMG ZIA'S VOICE ||
Gaaaaah I'm getting chills from these credits
oh, aight
I can continue from before I entered the final area <--
gotta be done for the night though
think I'm just gonna burn though and check out || the other endings ||, and then make my way to Transistor
if you just want to see ||the other endings ||, you don't have to replay the entire game, you can just ||load the last save since it saves from the point before you enter the final area.||
yee
Minor spoilers?||Okay so in the strangers dream, N is for Nordy the bird boy, but the book Rucks is reading is from when he was a kid; How would Nordy be in this book assuming he is younger than Rucks?||
||The theory is that Rucks is the Kid from a past timeline.||
if i liked hades would you guys recommend this game?
I'd say so
Do keep in mind that it's also the first game SG made, so it's gonna be a bit rough on the edges
Yeah. It's got an arsenal system like Hades, but you can have two weapons you can swap out as well as a tertiary ability that has a resource management to it.
You have melee and ranged weapon options, though you can pick any two that you want.
word of warning, your dodge works differently than Hades' dash, which tripped me up at first
Yeah. It's something you wanna use for mobility more than anything, as well as flanking enemies.
alway be rolling
yeah--for avoiding attacks, your shield tends to work better
Eh, I'd say it's best to use your shield as a way to close distances under heavy fire and to counter attacks, not evade damage, as you're left way too stationary to get out of bad situations just by shielding.
yea
i love using the shield to send back attacks
just replayed it again and my god what a fantastic game
thank you devs
the best storytelling experience I've had in a videogame bar none
yeah like i Love all of supergiant's game but the story telling in bastion is unbeatable
glad you enjoy! it's my personal favorite
sure
I just played through it as well, really enjoyed it :D
so are squirts a type of windbag?
in Cinderbrick Fort, the narrator talks about windbags a couple of times, but the enemies appearning at the time are squirts. so I'm figuring squirts, windbags and maybe scumbags might be like races of the same species, but all of them formerly worked together with humans
I thought that they were just different ages of the same species
seems you're right, the fandom wiki considers windbag the family name, and squirts, gasfella and scumbags different stages of development. And apparently gasfellas were in some sense part of society because they worked with (for?) humans (I do remember that from one of the earliest levels, the workmen ward), but then there is the issue of the distillery offering "squirt cider", made with "squirt extract", so the relationship between humans and windbags must have been tense to say the least...
Gasfellas were also present as workers in one of the later levels, the mines, and there were a couple that started out friendly unless you accidentally hit them
Yes, wiki says the mines is where they're originally from apparently. So I guess they have some sort of natural drive to work with metals..? Sounds a bit like dwarves to me
Gotta remember this for the next dev Q&A... how much of the stories/world of your earlier game do you still remember, and can you tell us some stuff about the worlds of bastion or transistor that didn't really make it into the game XD
I love this game very much that is all
I bought the game on steam today cus cheap and I love hades and want to see what else the studio has made.
you won't regret
What, did no one have any trouble with the Repeater Trial or Challenge?
I think it's one of the easier ones
Yeh repeater wasn't the most troublesome one š that machete though... annoying squirts running all the time
The machete oneās been the easiest for me. Spawn camp all of the fleeing Squirts since they all spawn in the middle, and then take out the rest. Ez does it!
Idk if itās playing the game for a good hour or more but the Repeater one had me averaging at 40 targets. I canāt even begin to know how to do it, other than āaim goodā
Well, I did begin to imagine it. Blegh
I wasnāt aware that forge and distillery upgrades were active during the trials and the repeater went ācanāt imagine howā to āoh I guess I won it all?ā after getting three upgrade levels on the repeater
My favorite version of this was fire bellows where ||I had lifewine equipped and ran into the middle of the squirts and exploded all of them in a single go||
yeah I think I left most of the trials until after finishing the story, so the weapons were already upgraded at that point
I just did every trial as it was unlocked-
I always try to do them as vanilla as possible...or, assumed that was the case.
You get the weaponās upgrades for the Trials?
upgrades and secret skills
super secret super skills
No I mean like, youāre able to use your current upgrades in the trials?
Yes
Say, it's not just me having an issue specifically with the left Tree targets in the Slinger challenge, right?
Hey fellas, so bastion is far from roguelikes right?
Correct, Bastion is not roguelike at all
You play each area once in each playthrough, and one playthrough will give you at least 90% of the plot if you get all the extras. There is some backstory stuff you might not get until newgame+
So just to confirm, you can't turn off Auto Aim?
PC lets you autoaim with Shift (it doesn't autoaim by default) so I would imagine they give you the option to use it or not on other platforms as well
Shift is Shield oHo
Autoaim triggers when you're in a mid-range proximity to an enemy for me...
I think that is a setting you can toggle
Shield and autoaim trigger simultaneously for me
so both Shift
Hmm, on console the autoaim is a toggle button and then a meter that I think represents distance of snap-to maybe? It must be the same as what you're talking about?
I didn't find a button to toggle it on the fly in the keybindings like described for PC but maybe I didn't look hard enough.
Yooooooooo
Bastion's one of my favorites of all times, and dayum if it's not a merited place

I would highly recommend it
there is a spoiler or two in that video
I beat Bastion once a while ago, anyone think it's worth another play thru on switch?
I mean
It's Bastion
So obviously yes
i like bastion on switch, but it was annoying that you can't remap buttons
I'd say 100% the game is worth it and gives a sense of accomplishment
Just finished New Game Plus today
I still can't bring myself to ||leave Zulf behind and Turn back the Clock||
He lands on top of a Breaker's Bow, and it ain't broke.
I can't enjoy Bastion gameplay anymore after the fluid combat of Hades, but man I'm a sucker for the narration.
Does anyone know if there is like a compilation of just the Bastion narration, like an audio book or something?
Not that i know of. If you eant i can see if i can pull the audio files out of the game (if it isnt illegal)
thank you. but i found some videos that can scratch that itch for now.
appreciate the offer though.
š
This is the one I found. Good editing.

Nice
I have each sgg as a #1 in a certain category and Bastion is the #1 in voice acting and (probably) story
https://youtu.be/6RTkUgov60g?t=41
can someone make an Animaniacs Intro meme with this?
I recorded the game with narrator audio only and everything else turned down to zero in the sound menu volume settings. Then I just cut out the silent parts and repeats.

Hades is everything I didn't get in Bastion
I Enjoyed Bastion but it felt real slow.
My excuse for adjusting so easily to Bastion after playing Hades for a good how-many-months is
You're not a god anymore, so you can't expect yourself to move like one
That, and old game.
No but uh, I'm gonna be honest...
I always aimed manually before learning I can use the Shift key for stuff outside the Dualies' Trial.
I-I finished Bastion today. Played it for the first time.
It's... it's so short š ...I want more... blease
I know i still can start new game plus and max out all the challenges and whatnot
But I want more of the story
š¦ Sadly, there will never be more of that, not from the original hands at least
yeppy yep... though... I enjoyed it a lot. The artstyle is so cute. It was a lot of fun gameplay-wise.
Tho,,, I feel like the two decisions I made in the end didn't really matter. Because the game ends soon after making them... I just can't see their outcomes š¤ ...so yeah I love SGG and h but it kinda felt like I'm in the middle of the story... not in the end.
I cried the first time, once for each ending š³ I see what you mean though, it's not like Pyre or so where you have to live with your choices from as early as 1/3 of the way in or so
I did feel ready to depart that world though when the game ended, it made me happy. Well not happy, but satisfied
Though even in Pyre, the outcome of your choices is entirely in the narrative. SGG have never really made anything where your choices really result in playing a different game so to speak. Branching level sequences or such. You mainly get to make two choices: how you want to play (esp in terms of difficulty), and how you interact with characters. Interesting observation š
Then again, have you played any game where you felt your decisions mattered more?
That's a tough question to answer directly, in a sense the decision at the end of Bastion can't matter more since on it hangs the fate of everything the player has worked for, but in another sense there is no more game after that decision, so for a player disconnected from the world or characters it means nothing but a slightly different credit sequence. I would put forward Undertale as a game that reacts well to the player's decisions without making those decisions the only defining feature of the game. Other games that advertise themselves by claiming "multiple endings" often end up being similar to games like Until Dawn or the Henry Stickmin games, where the gameplay is entirely making the decisions. I'll list some other games that feature decisions with long-term consequences before this turns into an entire rant: The Outer Worlds, Disco Elysium, and The Stanley Parable all come to mind.
thereās Chrono Trigger
little slow? I beat the game in about 3 hours, but I get what you're saying
Oh no, it's definitely not too long. It's just that the kid moves real slow
I just roll a lot, but I understand
Also Undertale will only vary the dialogue as far as I'm aware though, no? Similar to Pyre, you still play the same game, but the characters you meet might have different text or every now and then characters might be swapped out for different ones depending on your actions. Until Dawn and its relatives dealt with their choices they give in a pretty horrible way tbh, where if you let a character die, for the rest of the game their relevant bits of dialogue are just cut and the result is a lot of awkward cutscenes where things don't quite match up. Outer Worlds as far as I've heard just has a lot of optional content, which is of course a nice form of player choice, but does result in hilarious speedruns finishing it in 10min XD Tbh I'm not entirely sure if it's possible to accomplish a different kinds of player-dependent game without ending up in the LoZ open-world territory. I definitely agree with you, the choices in Bastion are as substantial as they could be - but their substance lies entirely in the narrative, and they only modify the meaning of what has already happened so far due to their positioning so late in the game.
then there's pretty much every Tell-a-tale game ever
This game is pretty easy so far except for bullhead court
I can't get hit less than 3 times for the life of me
Hello! Iām having problems with the steam client for the game. Whenever I try to run it, the game ends up kicking me out for some odd reason and I donāt know why. So I always have to go and open the game locally.
But even then this game doesnāt even work with my controller even though it says on the steam page that it does. Why do I feel like Iām being lied to...
I have played Bastion with a controller so I can confirm that works. Maybe check the drivers for your controller? If it's just not detecting the controller when it's plugged in,y ou may need to manually assign the driver to the device. As for the Steam client, all I can reccommend is making sure Steam is updated and run a "Verify Local Files" on Bastion from your Library page to make sure all the info is there
I had issues with controller too. Try using kbm to go into the options menu and manually enable controller there. Think that's how I solved it.
so, i have a theory. (and i realize its probably been discussed here before, and confirmed or denied, so apologies if i am just repeating past conversations) but i believe that the army carbine was supposed to originally be an armor piercing weapon, due to the fact that all of the enemies you find around where you get it have armor, and most of the other weapons you get are usually very effective against the enemies near where you get them, but the carbine just feels... lacking
it does eventually get an upgrade to ignore armor, so it's quite possible they originally designed it to have that off the bat and then realised it's too powerful and shfited it to the end of the upgrade tree
Carbine still is a good weapon, esp. when you max it as it has 2 very good lvl.5 upgrades (AoE or armor-piercing bullets)
it does good damage, and it's versatile since you can snipe w/ it but also use it up close like a shotgun
the biggest problems i have w/ it are that it can actually miss (bad w/ low firing rate), and that it gets a bit outclassed when compared to Cannon and Mortar
the Cannon does more damage as a long-range sniping weapon, fires faster and causes AoE damage at all ranges, also very reliable w/ auto aim
the Mortar (best weapon in the game) is better for both long and short range, as it has higher damage w/ (potentially) huge AoE, ignores walls and is also very reliable
does the bastion gameplay get any faster? im about an hour in but so far it seems very slow and clunky (compared to hades at least)
it is pretty slow and clunky, unfortunately. There's a decent variety of weapons, but The Kid is not a speedy creature
i tried bastion and i didn't really like the narrative style gameplay and i just felt the gameplay was kind of lacking with the same basic layout of the map
not saying it was bad just wasnt my type
would transistor or hades be any different or the same
Hades is very different
Transistor a bit less so. It's still a very different game, and the narration works differently, but it's closer.
all of supergiant games's games are very different, but they have quite some stuff that's similar. I dont think i needed to talk about the atmosphere and all, but in terms of gameplay, bastion's gameplay is quite the same with hades with all the hack and slash, but bastion's leans more into your general story-driven game with an ending while hades is a rogue-like with an additional story to fill it up, if that made sense. Transistor is somewhere in the middle, the combat isn't as complicated as hades but isn't as simple as bastion either. The narrative gameplay of transistor is present as it is present in bastion though
