As you defeat enemies you get points and fill a bar, and when you fill the bar your score multiplier increases
You lose bar progress when you stop killing, and your multiplier will decay as well

Sounds like you have some permissions problems. Whitelist the game in your AV software and make sure the save directory has write access
(basically follow the "my game won't save!" tips in #hades-tech-fixes-old , sounds very similar)

Bastion is a steam game so it probably works a little differently than Hades, but it does sound like it could be a permissions problem if you're having to run the game as administrator and it's not saving right. Could be that the game doesn't have the permissions to access the save directory, but I've also seen a few things in a brief google search saying that Steam might use a different save directory than Bastion does.

I don't think it's a problem between Steam and Bastion. @trail mortar try briefly turning off your antivirus and/or firewall and see if it helps.

Bellows is only good if you use Leechade imo, it gives you a lot of little healings. Couple that with Lifewine and you can stand at deaths door pretty much indefinitely no matter what. Of course, if Olaf makes the enemies invincible for a moment, this strategy falls apart immediately.

The hammer trial is only one I never quite succeeded at, even with upgrades. Without any upgrades, I also can't do the fang repeater's shingles course, and I think I was struggling with the machete trial too.
Meantime, the mortar trial basically gives you an achievement and 1st place free of charge.

I found the dueling pistols harder than the hammer trial, and if we're talking about trials without upgrades, I had a pretty hard time with the calamity cannon one until I got ||homing missiles||
But dang, with dueling pistols, full upgrades, a taped-down "shield" button, Werewhiskey active, and both hands actively trying to mash the "fire" button, I still needed 2 tries to succeed

Saw the challenge talk. In the "NG all dreams and challenges" speedrunning category (where we complete all the challenges with first price) we did all challenges except for pistols, canon and bellows unupgraded. From my perspective the bow challenge is by far the hardest one to do

You know how when you charge up the bow, there's a circle of light that forms around you? Well that circle of light has the same exact animation every time. This way, with a little bit of experimentation, you can time your shots to get the strongest one every single time just by remembering the way that the circle looks just as the flash happens
That's how I did the bow challenge without upgrades
but you're right, it is very challenging

I saved Zulf and restarted before i played again. at the time i didn't realize that if you restart, the loop just keeps going... that's what makes that timeline so replayable, it just keeps happening.
