Rarity doesn't mean better, but with newer ships it's becoming more and more true, still though; at your point in the game you won't really be able to tell when a ship is old or new, so yeah.

Algerie is decent, but has nothing she's good at; Portland upon retrofit is very tanky and has pretty good damage. She can carry you through most of your game.
Use Ranger instead of Long and I think there's a better common BB than Renown
Then I'd say Shouhou as the third.

Easy to obtain ships I would look out for:
- Unicorn (Good permanently available healer)
- Enterprise (look for her in the medal exchange, great damage CV)
- Helena (This is for a bit further down the road, but her skillset is good for boss fleets)
- Saratoga (Good CV after retro)
- Yuudachi if you have the Eau de Barbeque item (Great DD after retro, but if you don't have the retrofit item, she's eh)
- Cleveland (Good light cruiser)
- Warspite (Medal Exchange, Great shelling BB, but you need the retrofit item, but it's permanently available. Only retro if you have the resources)

Yeah grinding stuff is completely irrelevant now; just rush to chapter 9 as soon as you can and you can farm there for a bit.

2-1 used to be the coin farm, it was like 2k coins an hour and you could farm it almost infinitely.

One of the reasons was because you could retire ships you got to get oil back, but they stopped letting you get oil from retiring ships, and then introduced oil cap and massive coin buffs to chapter 9 through chapter 13, so now you get way more coins than 2-1 ever gave.

Yorktown isn't that great, she'd be okay for starters though. A lot of being in early game is like.. just using ships you like.
I feel like early-on you should prioritize ships that are good to use period.
Which is why I recommend ships like Portland and Unicorn to everyone.

right now none of the UR's are worse than SR's; except Drake maybe, but still she's extremely good.
I feel like Drake has the best gun damage out of vanguards though.
