also belfast and cleve is outdated

Belfast is prob fine too honestly. Particularly with what i'm gathering about where they're at

Ah yes, thats the guide I was looking at. If this didnt work I was going to rebuild everything using their recommended fleets to get through the story
we prob got you pretty close to what that guide would've given you anyway so 
AL is extremely flexible
Can use basically anything
Thats why it gets confusing as theres no one right answer for everything
all rainbow is a right answer to everything 
depending on what that everything is
the main thing that concerned me was that I was stuck at 7-1 till i got a functional fleet and despite not playing since release and probably being in last place in pvp I was still getting killed by everyone i could fight lol
yeah 7-1 would prob chunk your mob fleet
prob gear problem
that's about when LB0 start to chug
well before gears
yeah the second fleet died to the first group it fights
that fleet was pretty bad
LB0 can like, barely do 7-2 safe in my exp
limit breaking is super important
single biggest buff your ships will get
ok this gives me lots to work on. are there any other new features that are super duper important or heavily time gated that I shouldnt neglect while I read guides?
research
someone said awakening so I'll look at that
prob won't be super important right now but yeah, awakening once your fleets are > 100 more. Opsi when you get to that point as well
for research I am doing St Louis unless thats a bad choice for the first one
makes sense for what you're using. Research is time-intensive
#1 prio for you is just pushing through campaign

dont use combat EXP pack to speed it up, analyze them then buy gear
those are different, lemme see if wiki has something easy to digest

so fill slots with highest rarity gear if I do not own one of the recommended items for that slot?

pay attention to the tiering of the gear too (it'll show in the top left as T1, T2, T3, and T0). usually T3/T0 gear is gonna be better than T2 or T1.
