why is the third slot empty, and isn't gold equipment deals more damage than purple ones

that's the AA slot, early game it's low priority, and I don't know what you have
also you'll have to learn that rarity isn't king
some Purple, Gold, or Rainbow gear can be worse, or inherently better than the other
for the AA slot one of these 2 would all work
again this is budgeting from gear boxes
so if you want a more thorough build post your depot
and this is another lesson the top set of gear is for DD while the other 2 are for CL, CA, and CB

so this is a very basic template of what you can do with the ships you have
this can vastly change when you get into PR, but most gearing options here are from the box
you lack a solid 3rd ship to make a 2nd fleet entirely
