There's this game mechanic called Retrofits that's basically an upgrade for ships
In your fleet Unicorn,Portland and Laffey have one but you want both Unicorn and Portland's asap, but it will take a couple of weeks

ectl? it's not unhelpful for sure, and does help with gear, but please understand that ectl doesn't take into account most gamemodes (only campaign), doesn't rly work for say higher worlds, doesn't tell you how teambuilding is just as important as using good ships, that gear depends on the content you're facing, and doesn't at all account for cost
personally I really like the english community tier list as a resource for starters
