i was not very smart with how i started, i just got ships and started going up with them

it's fine. there's always a balance between just using something you already levelled versus replacing them with something better that might take you weeks before they surpass them.
an example would be Hunter META is probably better than Janus
If Janus was the same level and MLB she would be much better than Hunter.

i've been looking at the site that has all ships in respective tiers and trying to go based off of that

And Kala Ideas is an example of a new ship you just got than is better that your existing ships but it will take you time and resources to raise her.
