TLDR Gameplay helps needs a general thread so people can talk in the thread and still see GPH to help people.
To my knowledge we cant currently have causal chat threads in GPH.
Al-general is too divergent from what most people that are active in gameplay help talk about, and also I, along with some others I assume, cant use al-general because a lot of art or ship designs that get posted often are too ecchi/nsfw for looking at while at work or in public
If you can't got to #al-general cuz of ecchi posts, there's a simple solution. You can turn off your images
that still doesnt solve how tedious it is to have to constantly go between 2 channels. you're more likely to just have the people who help be active less overall the more you try and force people to have 0 conversation in the help channel
you can view threads and channels at the same time
unless you can view 2 channels in discord now as well
The purpose of GPH is to offer help to those who need it. The purpose of the channel is pretty simple, it is for Gameplay Help, it isn't called "General 2, this time with answers"
Sam seems to have little to no trouble swapping between the channels, and given their close proximity, it is rather simple to keep up with the conversation in both.
okay so then hire sam and have him be the only person that answers questions. because when most of us get shoved out of GPH we dont go back or flip back and fourth through them
its all volunteer
and gph generally self moderates pretty well
and almost never misses questions asked
yes and id have to constantly turn them on and off going back and fourth through the channels
......Or you could just....
Leave them off while you're at work
people use images in gph pretty often
al general also has a ton of conversations going on. (not so much anymore i guess. it kinda ebbs and flows )gph tends to stick on one thing. that's why im saying having a thread would be best for everyone
As you said, this is a Volunteer situation.
You are by no means obligated to open every single image in GPH, nor are you required to even be there to answer questions.
Even so, disabling images means you can just... open the ones you need and ignore ones that have already been answered.
Also. The Reason GPH sticks to one thing is because the channel generally disallows casual, unrelated chat. As such, the topic of the conversation is much more focused and streamlined for people who are looking for answers.
Threads are not being used in #gameplay-help for the purpose of "I wanna have a place to have casual chat while helping people with GPH on the side." They are used to help focus in on a specific situation that might otherwise be lost in the massive conversation, or to help cut down on the number of repeated topics that arise, such as "Need help with OpSi fleet".
It isn't and SHOULDN'T be used for casual conversation as it would disrupt the purpose of the channel.
We have a channel for casual conversation related to the game, it is #al-general. If you wish to have casual conversation, you may do so there. If you wish to help people with gameplay, #gameplay-help.
Most people seem fine with using #al-general and #gameplay-help for their intended purposes, even those who are heavily active in GPH.
Yes and im telling you the way it currently is has continued to filter out people in the discord for years and will continue to do so.
Threads exist now which would be a healthy compromise for people who really just want to talk about gameplay and minmaxing who also tend to be the ones that are most active in GPH because you can easily see both channels.
You're basically acting like the gph community doesnt exist and it hasn't existed for years. It was even more active when we had mods themselves who would engage in conversation in the channel and just keep people from going too far off track or making sure questions arent missed. Yet you still rely on them to answer everyone's questions.
Here's the breakdown: threads are currently being used for this "healthy compromise". We are "acting" like the gph community is beholden to the rest of the community, NOT the other way around. If you absolutely must branch out with your posse who happen to share your interests in GPH, there are countless offshoot servers let alone channels on this very server to do so in.
If there's an ongoing discussion in gph, it must be gameplay-help-driven and not just whatever tickles your fancy. This is the way the channel has functioned "for years" as you put it.
So your official response, in part is telling me and other people to just go to another server and further fragment the community?
Why is there such a strong refusal to make any kind of compromise for people that arguably care about the game more than most people?
Also to this day it's still very inconsistent what we get told to leave the channel for. There are times when it's gameplay or meta-related and we're asked to stop. And it's extra frustrating when it's from moderators who don't interact with the community at all or they're only interaction is telling people to leave the channel. Also because people in gph already make an effort to self-moderare
