Hive are like parasites, they have a worm inside them that give them life. Aka just look at one Destiny
Anyway, the fun part is the sword logic. In short, Hive feed off death. They need to kill to constantly feed their worms or they die. And the more they kill, the stronger they get. And the stronger the being they kill, the stronger they grow

Hive Gods, thrive off of death. They're the strongest that is. Having a throne world which is a separate reality where they can retreat to if their physical body is killed

That means a Hive god can keep coming, and coming unless you slay them within their ascendant realm (throne world)
One example would be King's fall in the TTK.

You slayed Oryx in the physical realm, but he isn't truly dead. Only after you have proven yourself with a fireteaam did you enter his throne world and where he finally met his end

So In MORE short: if a Hive god kills an archon, they grow stronger
