Also, the reason I've been asking about gatcha adaptations lately is because in R1999's server, someone said that we need better PR and I said that an anime would be the best idea. This is because of how a lot of gatcha games end up getting one eventually and because even if turns out not as good, its still an ad for the game. However, I'm hoping that what happened with GFL's anime doesn't happen again

And trying to judge how close the chemistry between characters is actually feels harder because of this, lol. A lot of characters are already friends (even if they aren't really close with each other), usually calling each other by their given name instead of their family name.

The issue here is that, as far as I know, the characters originally used suffixes like -san or -chan, and since this got removed in the official translation, it just feels extremely weird looking at the characters calling each other by their given name so casually. And then suddenly, there were moments when they call each other by their family name instead

Originally, when Tatsuya or his friends from his second-year group (I'm referring to Leo, Mizuki, Erika, etc.) talked to their upperclassmen friends (Miyumi and their gang), even when they called them by their first name since they're already have friendly relationship, they would still add -san out of respect

But looking at the official translation, which already had the suffix removed, it makes their interaction feel weird as hell, man

Even something like how Erika calling Katsuto with -san and Mayumi calling him with -kun instead can show the difference with how close their relationship is

Sigh, maybe I'm just a little bit too deep in this rabbit hole that even something like this already bothered me so much huh

In my defense, this is important to me because Mahouka have a large amount of cast and the characters there have their own interesting story and relationship with others

And with how Japanese culture work, removing the suffixes give a lot of impact to me when trying to distinguish relationship between character, especially the characters who have small screentime

Tbf I still can add another stuff, like there were a lot of time Yakumo just called as "Yakumo" from a lot of characters, even from that spy teacher woman who supposed to be one of the disciple from the Temple

While it was supposed to be Yakumo-sensei, but since all the Japanese suffixes got yeeted by Yen Press, the translator just left it like that, which makes things look really awkward

The only things they done right was replacing "-sama" with Master or Lady when it comes to Ten Master Clans figures (or Minami trying to call Miyuki and Tatsuya when she just introduced to their home)

Sure maybe sometime a weirdo character who practically called everyone and their mother with "-chan" (usually a macho looking characters but wearing feminine clothing) appears, but it's not like they are actually common in Japanese fictional stories lol

And yeah, if you still want to blame fan translations and anime, a reminder that even 'Onii-sama/Onee-sama', 'Aneki', and similar suffixes, which mean 'older brother/older sister', can have really different connotations depending on how you use them

For example, it's not strange for a kid who have an older neighbor friend calling them with "-nii/nee", but seeing the kids calling their older friend as "nii/nee-sama" would be weird as hell

And it's not like Official Translation have to abandoned the suffixes right away and pretend they never exist like what translator in Mahouka did

I'm fairly sure the people that would read mahouka are ya know

In the weeb culture to begin with

They would know what the terms mean

Some novels even go out of their way to say that
"Hey we're keeping the suffixes in, here's a list of them and what they mean"

Those ones are usually jnovel ofc

And you know what, maybe it's also the issue with how the culture in Mahouka's world when calling a friend with their given name isn't really strange compared to Japan before World War 3 happened

With how things going there, suffixes is become way more important than before (especially in reader perspective), and with how official translations doing their stuff, it fucked up a lot of things

You know what? The best way to reread Mahouka story for me is reading the manga adaptation of the novel lol

A lot of manga adaptation of Mahouka were surprisingly pretty faithful even when they can't cover all of wall-of-text exposition stuff from the novel lol

The only real issue with the manga adaptation was some art is kind of hit or miss, because some adaptation was drawn by artist who isn't really experienced with manga serialization

For example the adaptation of the election arc when Azusa replace Miyumi as Student Council President was kinda dogshit

Whew I feels kinda refreshed, it feels hard to bring this topic on other place lol
