You should try using RIOT compression, it's available as a plugin for irfanview amongst others
That way you can keep the highest quality within your png but considerably decrease its filesize further

I just kept on reducing the image quality until it got under 10 mb

don't sacrifice graphics quality for that, thats generally what jpgs are for
iirc, RIOT can oftentimes reduce the filesize by 30%+, depending on circumstances
There are better compression algorithms as well, but not that feasible anymore, since you will gain very little and it takes considerably more time to process the images
don't resize, btw. Just wait.
