also diesel electric is good for economic purposes like saving fuel or you guessed it, SUBMARINES which require power to operate underwater but cant use DIESEL ENGINES cause the fumes would kill the crew, this is circumvented by storing the electricity in batteries where the electricity can be used to drive the propeller shaft and begin movement without using the diesels. in extremely simple terms yes a diesel electric engine provides power to a ship to be moved under electricity however it does not provide actual means of utilizing it as you need several systems to be able to capture and use the excess energy effectively. The oversimplified way of explaining diesel electric engines is for one, disgusting. And second, extremely incorrect.
