Honestly Mrwhosetheboss's take on MIUI 13 doesn't fare well with me

#

"not as corporate feeling"
?? what

#

also, commenting on how the UI is more "fun" and "colorful" when I find it more jarring and bloated (especially with the heavy amounts of personalization features that I don't really feel like it's necessary)

#

Also, no new Android 12 features included, like the more subtle and better theme engine and privacy dashboard, thus what a shame

#

Also, the Xiaomi 12S phone's more expensive than a good dedicated digital camera, like Sony's ZV-1, which pretty much has the same size sensor but better lenses, more pocketable and better in quality

sudden raft
sudden raft
#

saying this as someone that has four devices with me on a daily basis

subtle hawk
#

I do follow MrWhoseTheBoss for his reviews, but in this case, definitely not taking his Xiaomi review for granted

#

Like, it's a good phone definitely, but I definitely am not buying any Xiaomi phone in the next few years

kindred arrow
#

people need to understand the basics of balancing their budgets and accept that cramming every single feature into a phone does not make for a better experience in general (wait, did I just mean smartphones in general are bad influence in the first place?? what a hot take)

#

I could go on about this, but I'm having a hard time just rambling about people's need for skinny jeans instead of proper pants, so there

subtle hawk
#

I don't think so, x86 is always top in raw performance, I believe each architecture has its adequate field.

#

It's absurd to have such thing as an architecture superiority.

wintry forge
#

x86 is dated

#

It's so old

#

made in 1978

#

there are definitely better alternatives to x86, raw performance wise

#

But backwards compatibility also matters

brazen scaffold
#

Does anyone here use the apple airpods pro with a Samsung phone?

hexed citrus
quartz atlas
#

Well ye

subtle hawk
#

Also, an architecture evolves, a modern Intel processor is in no way the same as an Intel 8086.

subtle hawk
hexed citrus
#

that these benchmarks are made to score x86 higher

#

because comparing x86 and ARM is like comparing apples to oranges

subtle hawk
#

Uhh what?

#

There's something you can always measure for example

#

Like the number of instructions per cycle.

hexed citrus
#

that's is not a useful metric when comparing architectures

#

if I can do the same computation in 2 cycles while you need 8 but you have 4 times the speed what kind of comparison is that

subtle hawk
#

But in my opinion x86 isn't dying anytime soon, and it's not bad either.

hexed citrus
#

it's garbage

#

don't kid yourself

#

it has a ton of useless instructions and requirements from the stone age

subtle hawk
#

"Useless instructions"???

#

I write low level code and I honestly don't know what you're talking about

#

Do you even know ARM nowadays is pretty much CISC

hexed citrus
#

and I have a PhD in semiconductor engineering, tell me more about it

subtle hawk
#

There's a ton of useless instructions in ARM too then

hexed citrus
#

which ones

#

name them

subtle hawk
#

I'm not very sure, but certain there is

#

But something I don't like of ARM is how naturally closed it is

#

For example look at Android phones or at the M1

hexed citrus
#

x86 is licensed by AMD and Intel

subtle hawk
#

I'm not speaking about that

#

I'm speaking about how you can't change the hardware in a M1 or install a ROM in certain Android phones

hexed citrus
#

what does that have anything with ARM

#

that's a design choice that is mostly enforced by software and firmware

#

not hardware

subtle hawk
#

Well, ARM easily allows for that to happen, unlike x86 which is more standardized.

hexed citrus
#

you can do the same thing with x86

#

it's just not economically viable to put so many components on the same die and risk more defects

#

because x86 components are gigantic compared to ARM

subtle hawk
hexed citrus
#

that has nothing to do with the architecture

#

I can forbid you from running a different OS on any laptop nowadays

#

because most modern CPUs have E fuses that you can use to detect and trip when someone goes outside of your target software

subtle hawk
#

oh what

#

I didn't know that

#

How does that work

hexed citrus
#

you write low level code, you should know this as it's part of the instruction set and in general the security enclave of modern processors

subtle hawk
#

Oh enclaves? So SGX?

#

I'm not very sure because I mostly only do osdev.

hexed citrus
#

then even more so you should know this

#

as it's part of the core of most modern operating systems

subtle hawk
#

Hmm I see

#

Could you point me to resources to learn more about it please?

hexed citrus
#

you can get the documentation and guides from the main x86 manufacturers

#

in this case AMD and Intel

subtle hawk
#

In computing, an eFuse (electronic fuse) is a microscopic fuse put into a computer chip. This technology was invented by IBM in 2004 to allow for the dynamic real-time reprogramming of chips. In the abstract, computer logic is generally "etched" or "hard-wired" onto a chip and cannot be changed after the chip has finished being manufactured. By...

#

Oh TIL

#

So it's pretty much like a ROM the processor can switch to at any time

subtle hawk
#

Or maybe in the basic architecture

hexed citrus
#

I don't remember exactly in which chapter it is

#

#

inland marsh
worthy musk
#

inland marsh
#

Interestingly since a lot of consumer TV here can accept RGB/YPbPr signal, PVM is not that much an improvement

#

Still sold at around $200 tho

worthy musk
#

Dont you need to modify them for the RGB signal?

worthy musk
#

Apparently the trinitron i have has YPbPr input idk if it actually does anything

inland marsh
#

You can convert RGB to YPbPr simply using external OpAmp

#

At least you don't have to mod your TV

sudden raft
#

hasn't x86 become essentially a risc compiler at the lowest level

worthy musk
#

My question wasnt really answered though

#

Where do people get PVMs to sell in the first place

inland marsh
#

With microcode and modern compiler, RISC/CISC distinction is rather moot

#

Most PVM here is from TV/production house block auction
We only plan to completely abandon analog broadcast recently, so the (potential) stock is still abundant

worthy musk
#

Auction?

inland marsh

block auction, so unless you plan to buy hundred of them in one lot then probably wait for some broker to resell

I originally wanted a 2080 ti but the blowers are the only "cheap" ones and even then theyre 450$

Any other suggestions would be apreciated too

@worthy musk I assume you could find those at a used market, but whatever's worth, try finding a 3060Ti

especially, on lower prices

inland marsh
#

Just beware of modded BIOS, lol
this market smh

kindred arrow
#

but if neither of the options are affordable, try buying a non Ti/XT model

#

Worst case scenario, any GTX 1660 card would be your last resort

#

But, Worst worst case scenario (because bs like this can happen on certain markets), then... good luck with an RX 6500

#

Or worse, an RX 6400, or a 1050 Ti

#

At GT 730 level, you'll start to see why sometimes intergrated graphics may be the best option after all

worthy musk
#

3060s are expensive and the 2080 seems a bit better

#

But its older and has some overheating issues

kindred arrow
#

there were some instances of blower style 2080s with aftermarket gpu cooler replacements in it

#

you just take apart the whole blower style cooler, put in a better one

#

If you can find a decent 2080 or 2070 blower style cards, and then find coolers like an Arctic Accelero Xtreme for a decent price, and maybe extra heatsinks for vram, that'll be better

#

do note, the mod can make the GPU taller than usual, check your case for compatibility

I mean like the actual design

#

I wanna do like a itasha style case

odd juniper
#

Today I learned a antenna is basically mandatory is you've a ssd on top of your wifiadapter DunkekStare

inland marsh
#

High frequency lines rarely play nice with each other

wintry forge
#

yep

odd juniper
#

@versed blade

odd juniper
inland marsh
#

wait, by adapter did you meant a mPCIe module? MutsukiStare

odd juniper
#

yes? what did you think i meant

#

like a usb adapter should work out of the box

#

m.2 key e

inland marsh
#

the fuck did you think not using antenna on radio devices

odd juniper
#

HEY

#

I dont use it

#

on my pc

#

and it works fine ok

versed blade
odd juniper
#

odd juniper
versed blade
#

ah btw thanks for the link

#

I forgot to thank you in Dms

odd juniper
#

20 bucks more expensive

versed blade
#

but I dont think I will buy them lol

odd juniper
#

i got that one

versed blade
#

nice

#

16tb is pog

odd juniper
#

the nas was cheaper

versed blade
#

i know

odd juniper
versed blade
#

my hdd cost in total like 1k or so

odd juniper
versed blade
#

current disks

inland marsh
odd juniper
#

also the other one

#

where it works without the antenna

#

is uh

#

z690 gaming wifi e from asus

#

welll technically it has a antenna already connected it just doesn't have the addon antenna on it

#

here

#

this but without the antenna

inland marsh
#

well, that's at least terminated

odd juniper
inland marsh
#

never leave RF unterminated

odd juniper
#

are you saying i should still connect it?

inland marsh
#

yes

odd juniper
#

man SadgeBunkerHill

#

but i use ethernet

inland marsh
#

bruh, just disable it then

odd juniper
#

Choco_Think i could

#

never thought it could do any harm though NimiWat

#

wifi adapters are my only weakness DunkekStare

inland marsh
#

the cable itself should be enough, but why wouldn't you put actual antenna?
definitely never leave it without at least the cable connected tho

odd juniper
#

its a mini pc

#

not really much space to put any antenna

#

so i got this

inland marsh
#

you can also buy pigtail antenna that connect directly to the module I guess if there's non-metallic window in the case

odd juniper
#

Can't it's nuc size

inland marsh
#

That reminds me to maybe go ahead with my not-quite-sober plan to put pfSense and trueNAS on those aliexpress-special N5105

#

wcgw

odd juniper
sudden raft
sudden raft
#

but there's paint on one panel

odd juniper
#

there is a m.2 key e under a m.2 slot

inland marsh
#

2.5" are plastic nowdays AkagiLUL

#

not that the PCB itself won't mess up with radiation pattern anyway

sudden raft
hexed citrus
inland marsh
#

you definitely get plastic on bargain bin brands like neo forza, klevv, vgen etc

#

those bargain bins are basically what's left in 2.5" market here, since almost everyone with a little bit more money usually go straight to m.2

#

outside of console/prebuilt/laptop parts ofc

wintry forge
#

those drives are so much eaiser to carry than m.2s

#

metal feels more robust and safer to take with you

#

i guess it's a niche use case

sudden raft
#

mine have all been samsung
apart from a crucial or two

#

but that cheapo tammuz is also metal
even the external USB 3.2 one i got from them as a bonus item has a metal shell

wintry forge
#

crucial has a pretty good reputation

#

I use samsung for desktop but other storage devices like for phones I use sandisk/wd

inland marsh
#

I never actually deal with 2.5 ssd
Pretty much went straight to m.2 BiskoLUL

wintry forge
#

m.2s were expensive

sudden raft
#

if i want to install another 2.5 inch drive at this point i'm going to have to stick it with tape

inland marsh
wintry forge
#

can't tell if that's even a computer at that point

sudden raft
#

it had windows and like
a few bare essential programs on it

inland marsh
#

wait, it might be actually mSATA

sudden raft
#

there's so much wiring at the back

#

it's like that homer meme

wintry forge
#

bare essentials for me

#

if it can open browser, then it's good enough for me

sudden raft
#

if one of a set of fans on a daisy chain/splitter

#

stops over a certain PWM %

#

does that mean there's a connection problem or

#

is there something weirder

inland marsh
#

do they work fine individually?

#

do you mix different fans?

sudden raft
#

they're all the same and running off a single header via either daisy chain or splitter i'm not sure
probably y-splitter daisy chain

#

it's a set of four

#

for some reason one of them stops over a certain %

#

maybe like 80% or something on the slider

#

it works perfectly normally at anything under that like the rest

#

all fans on the chain are the same model

inland marsh
#

it's probably a problem in that particular fan
daisy chained fans should all receive the same signal
in fact it isn't even actual daisy chain since all of them are parallel

sudden raft
#

if you mean have i tested it separately
the cable jumble is too much and they tucked its cable in behind something and i don't want to fiddle with it too much

sudden raft
#

and can actually be PWM controlled accordingly

#

i'm not exactly sure how they're connected but i'd assume it's the included noctua splitter

#

iirc those noctua fans come with a y splitter for chaining

inland marsh
#

pwm receiver glitch all the time
I mean, even a hundred bucks industrial servo do that all the time

sudden raft
#

there are like

#

what

#

10 fans in total

#

so i guess

#

one being flaky isn't exactly unusual odds i suppose

inland marsh
#

9 fans off the same header is definitely out there tho
why not create zones

sudden raft
#

there's seven A12x25 chromax and two industrial PPC F12s

sudden raft
#

one of the four in the front is the one being weird

#

there's also an A14 on the rear mount on its own header

worthy musk

worthy musk

pvms are overrated i want a viewsonic monitor now

#

high res and high refresh rates

wintry forge
#

viewsonic is great

sudden raft
#

we had viewsonics in the day

worthy musk
#

are they unreliable

#

ive heard they have convergence and geometry issues after a while

#

and when they fail they catastrophically fail
