wait

#

i got confused cuz i thought they were mobo covers on the GPU

#

its actually just an asus

#

also the pump is actually working correctly now

#

im no longer at 60 C constantly

hexed citrus
#

no you just disable that from bios

update

#

for the love of god

#

u havent updated for

#

4 god damn years

#

First announced back when the RX 6000 series was first revealed back in October last year, AMD has finally unveiled their FidelityFX Super Resolution technology. To be released later this month, it's pretty much their response to DLSS, using clever upscaling to strike a balance between decent image quality and higher performance.

how long are hdd's supposed to last? UniSip so i posted images of my hdd that was slow before and i have an identical drive that's been on the same amount but it always keeps up with writes compared to my other one (theyve both got 16.6k hours on time and both pass crystaldisk stuff as good)

#

i have stuff on it that i dont want to lose at all costs UniSip

quartz atlas
#

Just back it up then

#

You should be able to get 10k more hours on them

hexed citrus
#

depends on the model, year and manufacturer of the drive

odd juniper
odd juniper
subtle hawk
#

theyre big like 4TB drives so its just a lot to back up

#

i was thinking about getting some NAS thing (i think thats what theyre called)

#

i dunno how good they are though compared to like internal drives

#

cos i have no more room for internal drives in my pc UniSip

quartz atlas
#

Nas is basically a bunch of hard drives in an enclosure connected to your network.

#

Yama would know more

#

You still have to buy hard drives to put in the Nas enclosures

subtle hawk
#

yeah i just thought they might be better than internals for like back up kinda stuff

#

i think its kinda like a cloud storage

quartz atlas
#

Well it pretty is, except it's on your local network

#

And you own the drives

subtle hawk
hexed citrus
#

yeah a NAS is basically that

#

also for AMD's fidelityFX I have no hopes to beat nvidia

#

especially when they're directly competing with DLSS

odd juniper
subtle hawk
#

ThinkZed sounds good but theyre kinda pricey like 400-500 even without drives

odd juniper
#

yup. it's cheaper to just make one yourself.

#

configuring it will take more time though

#

u can just get something 2nd hand too

#

nasses don't need that much cpu power

#
MUO

NAS stands for Network Attached Storage. As Windows became easier to use with network attached devices, and hardware prices fell, this term started to be used in the consumer market. Today there’s a wide variety of off-the-shelf options that can provide storage for a home or small business network. The only problem is the price. A decent NAS can...

subtle hawk
#

o BuckySmug

odd juniper
#

so just get a "decent" 2nd hand pc of like 100 bucks

#

with some sataports ofc

#

else u need a pcie to sata card

subtle hawk
#

BuckySmug this is too big brain for me

odd juniper
#

get a pc
put in your drives
install some nas software
done

subtle hawk
#

i might just bypass them and buy EVEN bigger TB drives UniSip

#

and consollidate

odd juniper
#

with the amount you currently have i would put them in a nas

#

puts less stress on ur current pc too

#

or buy a new pc and convert ur current pc into a nas

@hexed citrus do you know of any 4pin 12v rgb to 3pin 5v rgb adapters?

#

my mobo has 4 pins, but my fan controller needs 3

I think 3 pin is for now PMW?

severe falcon

no its liek

my dev channel build still says Windows 10, not sure when they are going to release W11 ones

hexed citrus
#

oh yeah

#

to run windows 11 you'll need a TPM module

#

or if you already have it enable it

hexed citrus
#

MICROSOFT

#

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

desert olive
#

yeah TPM 2.0 is mandatory for everyone

#

Microsoft is very vague on this regard for some reason

mental coyote
#

Yea. Can't say I dig the taskbar change. I'm thinking some madlad'll figure out how to move it again.

subtle hawk
#

Microsoft is forcing a new UI experience again

#

reminds me of Windows 8

hexed citrus
#

it's literally stated on the windows 11 page

plain mica
#

you can edit the installer to disable that requirement, and rumor is that it won't be enforced after the installation

hexed citrus
#

you have to be daft to edit the installer to disable a really useful and essential feature nowadays

#

especially now that passwordless logins are being more and more mainstream

versed blade
#

tho Yama people are worried how this can tie purchase to single machine

#

Btw

#

Sideloading possible

#

guess only "barrier" would be G services

hexed citrus
versed blade
#

I mean you can but this makes it much easier

hexed citrus
#

no it doesn't

#

the key never leaves the TPM

versed blade
#

dont the purchases just link to the key instead?

hexed citrus
#

it's like a yubikey only built into your PCH or motherboard

#

no it doesn't

#

you have to be actually braindead to think that

versed blade
#

I am brainded

hexed citrus
#

the key never leaves the TPM under any circumstances

#

not the OS

#

not the kernel

#

nothing has access to that key

#

but the TPM itself

versed blade
#

Oh I see

hexed citrus
#

that's why it's called Trusted Platform

#

it's similar to the apple T2 chip

#

only it just does encryption and credential storage

versed blade
#

I imagined was similar

#

but thought you could still link stuff to it even with apple's one

#

just because it is unique to the device and unchangeable

hexed citrus
#

no you can change the key

#

just that you lose the encryption on your drives and your credentials

#

as well as the secure boot key

versed blade
#

Thought Secure Boot had different keys

#

also changing keys? NimiCursed

#

big yabai

hexed citrus
#

yeah you can change it

#

by resetting the TPM

desert olive
#

Most heard of the restrictions by word of mouth as well.

#

People do need to know what Secure Boot and TPM is to begin with before complaining why they're being gated frorm this update and it seems so far (at least from my end) nobody was able to explain what those are.

hexed citrus
#

it's simple

#

security

#

ez to explain

#

also it's literally on the front page

#

like not documentation

#

not a support page

#

the main windows 11 presentation page

#

also I doubt most people that will want to upgrade to windows 11 from 10 won't know how to enable TPM in BIOS or some things like that

#

the people that have no idea how to do it either won't care

#

or will get a new machine that runs windows 11 out of the box

hexed citrus
desert olive
#

Consumer devices that'll have Windows 11 pre-installed should start coming out by Early 2022 iirc

#

but the upgrade for existing devices is on Holiday 2021

#

so its fair to say that

plain mica
desert olive
#

lol

#

it was bound to happen

hexed citrus
#

not only that but a ton of people don't understand that most CPUs, PCHes and motherboards from 2016 and on have some sort of built in TPM support

#

they've been requiring TPM modules since windows 8 era

#

chromebooks had them since the beginning

#

apple just recently started using T2 and now their M1

#

and Qualcomm had TPM support since thr 855

#

then again for qualcomm it's more of a secure enclave tather than a TPM

#

since it can do much more

hexed canopy
#

Could it work pack the Zumwalt class with Hypersonic Missiles?

shut sapphire
#

@hexed citrus i found a way to get win11 without tpm

remote remnant

versed blade
hexed citrus
#

@shut sapphire no it's not magic bypass

#

you need the TPM module

#

else a lot of crypto and security stuff will simply not work or work in unexpected ways

#

ffs if ur that stingy to enable TPM or u have that old of a potato then stick with windows 10 till 2025

#

and yes you need TPM 2 not 1.2 or other bullshit like that

#

MS clearly stated that it was a outdated article page that they fixed

#

and that the health check app will now show a proper reasoning as to why your pc isn't supported

shut sapphire
#

i will see what my friend can do about this

hexed citrus
#

refer to what I said above

#

thinking ur bicc brain by bypassing it isn't making it better for you

odd juniper
#

today I learned the fast boot option in the power settings can cause problems for pc's after signing in causing a 2 minute long black screen lock with only the cursor EssexAAAAAAAAA at least it's fixed for my brothers pc now ig

hexed citrus
#

first time I hear of such issues

odd juniper
#

same. there were articles of similar issues but they had different solutions

none of them containing the power "fast boot" option

vagrant holly
#

i can't believe my x570 has a tpm 1.2

#

i hate life 5% more now

#

it's whatever, i'll just ride with windows 10 till the end and upgrade before 2025

#

just let people beta test 11 for the first year or 2

#

their focus on touch screen doesn't give me positive vibes tho tbh

#

reminds me of windows 8

hexed citrus
#

@vagrant holly you can probably install a module

vagrant holly

physically?

#

wouldn't that require soldering?

hexed citrus
#

no

#

you just slot it in

vagrant holly

ye i'm looking it up now

i found the slot on my mobo too

#

i thougt it was some big boy shit that required soldering

shut sapphire
#

yeah good luck

cz the prize is rising@vagrant holly

#

so win 11 is gonna be new win 8

#

this year gonna be fun

vagrant holly
#

i'm not buying it now, i'm not mental

#

people started scalping it already

#

i'm waiting until i need it

#

i'll check again in like, 2024 or something Omegalilwoo

plain mica
#

just wait until w11 is actually released, they might end up altering the requirements before release

#

or scalpers will realize the demand is lower than they expected and lower prices, either way it's good to wait

desert olive
#

scalpers ruining everything we enjoy

#

big pain

quartz atlas
#

at least now that mining is banned in china

#

gpu prices are coming down

versed blade
#

if you have a recent mobo+cpu you have TPM integrated

#

no need for external hardware

versed blade
vagrant holly
#

ye tpm is integrated on the latest hardware but win 11 specifically wants tpm 2.0 and up

desert olive
#

if you have an intel 8th gen or anything intel made past 2018 you should have PTT or fTPM

#

if you have an AMD ryzen or anything AMD made past 2017, you should also have fTPM

odd juniper
#

so nty

hexed citrus

macos is actually a good OS

even if the hardware is yikes

subtle hawk

but the M1 might kill that too soon

quartz atlas

I never liked macos but the last time I used it was like more than 10 years ago

spare ravine

yeah

random magnet

i cannot root my phone

because of Termux

random magnet

yeah, I can't

termux?

#

oh it's like command prompt for android

spare ravine

it's a terminal emulator that also provides some Linux utilities

random magnet

yeah since Android is based on linux after all

spare ravine

it's like cmd + some normal Linux shit

ohh

spare ravine

(look up chroot, it's pretty cool shit)

#

no virtualization, no emulation

#

it's magic

#

i was able to run gcc

#

#

and run them

#

even my web server worked

random magnet
random magnet
spare ravine
#

it pretends like you are running commands from a different installation

random magnet
spare ravine
#

a C compiler

spare ravine
#

and yes

#

I'm a programmer

random magnet
#

sucks, while I did apply for an ICT strand back in senior high

#

programming gave me pain

#

wasn't even thinking of programming

#

dunno, I couldn't understand what I was doing

spare ravine
#

it's only hard at the start

#

when you wrap your head around it, it gets easier

random magnet
#

went for ICT for animation and media arts lol

#

since it was available at the time

#

but didn't know I had to through programming first

spare ravine
#

because unlike other fields, the more "complex" parts in programming exist to save you from thinking and make your job easier

random magnet
#

since I stayed away from it and intentionally forget it

spare ravine
#

and it also becomes easier when you understand how the computer works, and even easier how stupid computers are

#

the "hardest" part in programming is how do you turn your idea/algorithm into instructions that stupid that your compiler can understand them

plain mica
#

or debugging

#

with networking/SSL involved

spare ravine
#

fuck SSL

plain mica
#

yes, but we need it

random magnet
spare ravine
#

yeah, otherwise anyone on your network can watch porn with you without you knowing

random magnet
spare ravine
#

ignore the check part, the useful part is the encryption

random magnet
#

Programming destroyed my eyesight and brain lol

hexed citrus
#

I smell some heresy

random magnet
#

oh shit FOG's here

spare ravine
#

i mean it still checks if the certificate is "trusted"

random magnet
#

he's what I call a "modmin" of the tech club

spare ravine
hexed citrus
spare ravine
#

sEgMeNtATiOn fAuLt (CoRe dUmPeD)

hexed citrus
#

debugging is the easy part

random magnet
hexed citrus
#

actually laying down the project and concepts is the hard part

#

as a wise man once said

spare ravine
hexed citrus
#

planning is half the battle

spare ravine
#

i was talking in the context of a beginner programmer

hexed citrus
#

if you're a beginner programmer you shouldn't tackle complex subjects from the get go

#

you start with basic stuff then work your way up

spare ravine
#

it depends on the approach

#

some people start directly with programming, some people start with literally how the atoms pass trough a transistor

hexed citrus
#

by the time you reach memory management you should already have a really strong grasp of the lifecycle of variables and data as well as the ways memory is allocated to your program and the methods to access it

spare ravine
#

nowadays people skip the memory management part

#

fucking piece of shit universities

hexed citrus
#

it's given to you in a lecture

spare ravine
#

they just tell you malloc is for creating dynamically sized arrays

#

WAT

hexed citrus
#

now the choice of actually listening to the lecture or doing whatever you think is more important then that is up to you

spare ravine
#

it's for borrowing memory from the operating system

random magnet
#

our prof started doing complex shit

#

instead of dumbing it down to basics

spare ravine
#

the lectures here were dogshit

#

and somewhat incorrect

vagrant holly
#

maybe he gave you the basics in all the previous lectures but you didn't pay attention because it didn't involve you sitting in front of a screen

hexed citrus
#

in uni they won't dumb it down

#

they'll expect you to already have a solid foundation to improve on

random magnet
#

I might go back to programming but due to the mental torture it gave me, it's gonna take a while

random magnet
spare ravine
#

what lang did you guys start with

random magnet
#

I went with marketing this time, where I believe I excel at

random magnet
spare ravine
#

you missed a +

random magnet
#

then on the second sem, we went with Java

#

sorry yea

spare ravine
#

C++ is kinda

#

ehhhhh

#

not very good for beginners imo

#

overly complicated

random magnet
#

if there was a language I truly want to study on, should be python and Java

hexed citrus
#

it's not that bad

spare ravine
#

I'd start with C

random magnet
#

and I was interested in Java

spare ravine
#

Java is also a shitfest at times

hexed citrus
#

C++
overly complicated
C which is even more verbose and low level
recommended

spare ravine
#

if you liked Java, I'd suggest C#

hexed citrus
#

mate

#

if anything it would be the opposite

spare ravine
#

dude i honestly believe that people should start with the lowest of levels

hexed citrus
#

that is the worst advice to give

plain mica
#

whichever programming language seems to make sense to you, stick with it

random magnet
#

I forgot which compiler we started with C++, but at first it seems simple

#

but as we were going over the ropes

plain mica
#

you'll end up learning more programming languages over time anyways

random magnet
#

our professor suddenly said "program this math problem"

#

like I was halfway through understanding the thing

#

it's like "make hello world" then on the next day "make minecraft"

hexed citrus
#

you don't give a architect the task to build burj kalifa on their first day

spare ravine
hexed citrus
#

then you barely scratched the surface of C

random magnet
#

isn't C++ a more "simplified" C or is this wrong?

plain mica
#

C++ is derived from C

spare ravine
#

C++ is C with classes, operator overloading, templates, and extra stuff

hexed citrus
#

C++ is more like the spiritual successor to C that adds OOP and other related concepts on top

random magnet
#

ahh got it. so if you want to learn C++, go to C first

#

dunno why we went with C++ immediately

hexed citrus
#

not at all

#

you can go with C++ straight off the bat

#

it will handhold you through the initial phase with some good sanity checks and restrictions

spare ravine
hexed citrus
#

not all languages need that

#

the paradigm behind each language varies wildly

spare ravine
#

well if it's a functional language, maybe you don't need some of the stuff

#

or if it has a GC + refefence types you don't really need pointers

#

but they are still used internally

#

so why bother hiding them

random magnet
#

during our classes in C++, we went ahead with MySQL

#

we went from language to databases

#

not even after the sem

spare ravine
#

was your professor speedrunning

random magnet
hexed citrus
#

because not all languages need to expose them

#

simple as that

spare ravine
#

i hate too many abstractions

#

but that's just my personal view

hexed citrus
#

if I write some basic logic for a bash script then I don't need to worry about extra nonsense

random magnet
#

wish we went ahead with one language and only that language through out the school year

#

like

#

if we started with Java, the entire SY should just study Java

hexed citrus
#

the idea is that they give you different languages with different styles and approaches so you find what you're comfortable with

#

not everyone is comfortable with the same language

random magnet
spare ravine
#

yeah but they'll still pick a random one and force you to use it anyway

#

liked Java? too bad. now we are using x86 Assembler for web development

random magnet
#

I am comfortable with Java, and I want to restudy it in the future

random magnet
spare ravine
#

(the 2nd statement was a joke)

random magnet
#

screw you lol

spare ravine
#

god save anyone's soul who had to do web dev in x86 Assembler

hexed citrus
#

they're giving you these so that you can decide on your own what peaks your interest

#

nobody writes full programs in assembly

spare ravine
#

ik it's usually the bootloader part of the OS, or the entry point of a program that's written in it

hexed citrus
#

no it's not

random magnet
hexed citrus
#

it's compiled down to that

random magnet
#

be it 3D animation, 2D animation and fucking programming

hexed citrus
#

this ain't the 80s

random magnet
#

I wish i was him hahah

spare ravine
#

aren't parts of CRT0 written in assembly?

hexed citrus
random magnet
#

yeah the jack of all trades in our ICT class

hexed citrus
#

c0 is just an entry point

#

not a full program

spare ravine
#

well i said the entry point

hexed citrus
#

most programs are compiled into assembly

spare ravine
#

some are compiled to some intermediate language first like LLVM, MSIL and however Java's byte code is called, then AoTed into machine code / assembly or JITed

#

I'd argue that most are JITed because Javascript is too popular

#

and C# and Java are really popular too

hexed citrus
#

being popular doesn't automatically make it the norm

because there's certain considerations to be taken

#

like the specifics and differences of each machine

#

not to mention that processors are optimized for this specific method of execution

spare ravine
#

yeah but if you distribute a binary containing machine code, what's the point if the compiler took those extra steps of generating assembly code then translating the assembly code into machine code

#

does it make it easier to do the code gen part?

hexed citrus
#

to simplify it yes

spare ravine
#

btw is Python JITed or interpreted

#

because it's performance always surprises me

#

it really feels like it's interpreted

hexed citrus
#

interpreted

spare ravine
#

ahh that explains everything

random magnet
#

what's JITed?

plain mica
#

just-in-time compilation

hexed citrus
#

basically the program is compiled just as it's about to be ran

plain mica
#

for example, java programs start out as interpreted, and then the longer it runs, the JVM that runs the code translates the most used portions into assembly code

random magnet
hexed citrus
#

no

plain mica
#

C++ is compiled into assembly code

hexed citrus
#

it's compiled ahead of time

plain mica
#

interpreted languages trade performance for the ability to "run anywhere", i.e. linux vs windows, ARM vs intel

subtle hawk
#

it's called PyPy

#

I don't know if it's production ready

plain mica
#

there's also versions of python that run on Java, but you'll get into all sorts of oddities with non CPython versions, so i dont recommend it for beginners

subtle hawk
#

Jython

#

Oh speaking of the JVM

#

I downloaded JRuby to fuck around and then decided to use a Java Discord library on JRuby

#

I literally couldn't believe it worked

#

LLVM (C/C++) + Java + Ruby + NodeJS + R + Python

#

the only thing that scares people away from this is project is the age, and because it's made by Oracle

subtle hawk
#

Oracle is pretty much what Microsoft could've been if they were still under Ballmer

plain mica
#

all i know is the people i talk to are afraid of lawsuits from Oracle if they use an Oracle product ¯_(ツ)_/¯

subtle hawk
#

Case in point is Google

plain mica
#

more of this kind of behavior where they "audit" you and threaten you with fines/lawsuits

subtle hawk
#

Why isn't Oracle declining

#

they look like a shitty company

#

pretty sure startups and new businesses don't use Oracle products

plain mica
#

yeah which is why they were struggling to gain market share with their cloud

#

it's expensive to migrate away from Oracle DB, and im sure they have the right contracts with the right company, so im sure they will stick around

and then there are things like GraalVM that may actually secure them a position in the future, since that basically compiles Java and other languages to machine code/assembly.

subtle hawk
#

With OSS solutions a company can swap support contracts anytime

#

lol

#

or do support in house

plain mica
#

support in house is expensive, because the engineers have to learn the software

#

like how my team is a de facto support team for Istio and we dont know anything about it :^)

subtle hawk
#

lmao

#

Vendor Lock-in + Lawsuits doesn't sound like a sound company strategy AkagiLUL

plain mica
#

Oracle is making money though, so it is what it is

subtle hawk
#

btw is Oracle going to cannibalize Solaris sooon

plain mica
#

wdym cannibalize?

#

i don't know any insider info about solaris, my companies have used linux/x86 servers

subtle hawk
#

ic

#

I just feel like there's nothing for Solaris now

#

it's all about Linux and the BSDs

plain mica

well according to wikipedia, the licensing changed, which Oracle tends to do with all of it's acquisitions
it wouldn't surprise me

SMR drives start being a pain when you need to rewrite something on them
