oof

#

i don't get it

#

Also Nox ain't running AL on my laptop for some reason.

#

Gonna try bluestacks

#

Ah, programming.

severe falcon
#

Yeah one of my teachers said do the number on the left so it would yell at you for if(0 = num)

#

I hate debugging my python stuff cuz the ide doesnt point to where the error happened on the line

#

Like when it says i did something wrong with a conditional and tells me the line number of an if statement with 6 conditions

severe falcon
subtle hawk
#

oof

severe falcon
#

I found the reason though, so not a big deal

#

Just a divide by zero in the slope causing an undefined slope but its applying it to the wrong thing

severe falcon
#

Maybe for you yamato, but usually it is met by another bug

So Intellivision is still alive... somehow.

But eh, to each their own.

#

The hell with these dead brands and attempts to hit at nostalgia?

subtle hawk
#

they are probably following atari's vcs reboot

tame topaz
#

Yeah.

#

This does look better than the VCS though lol

tame topaz
#

I think I've seen that one before.

subtle hawk
#

Me too

#

Just repost since I liked it

vale raptor
#

Does matching the RAM capacity with the one soldered on the laptop is necessary on upgrading? Say that I will install an additional 2GB SODIMM RAM to my laptop that has 4GB RAM soldered on the mobo.

past bison
#

its more important to match the voltage the other ram uses though matching the latency and mhz could be good as well, size doesnt matter

vale raptor
#

@past bison thanks for the reply. Do you know any software that will list down RAM specs like voltages, MHz etc.? CPU-Z doesn't show up any of my RAM specifications on slots that my laptop has on the SPD tab. The RAM is soldered on the board.

past bison
#

is it ddr3 or ddr4?

vale raptor
#

DDR3

past bison
#

its running on 1.5v or 1.65v then, the latency timings depends on the mhz but since its a laptop, i think its only 1333mhz or 1600mhz frequency and maybe cl9-cl11 latency timings

vale raptor
#

is this a standard to RAM specifications in DDR3? I've bumped into google searches about DDR3L's which they said consumes less power than a standard DDR3. Or are they referring to SODIMM RAMs directly?

past bison
#

ddr3lp runs on a lower volt and are generally only used in small formfactor things, such as phones and some very small laptops

vale raptor
#

but either DDR3L and standard DDR3 is fine?

past bison
#

i dont know, have never had anything with ddr3lp other than my phones

vale raptor
#

ok thanks

subtle hawk
#

you know you can take a look at the RAM modules on the board and see what it runs at

I'm surprised Nep doesn't. That level of hyperness can mess with people.

well in that case she has traumatized an irl child: Noble of Lost Pause

we have the infrastructure in place

#

There's so 5G phone available rn

#

5Ge is basically LTE+

#

there are some

#

SDM855 has 5G

#

MWC 2019 = 5G for sure

#

it's fun to poke around with a wide spectrum signal analyzer

#

And software
and AT&T

#

shows how signals propagate and how congested we are

#

How long till a future where we can have cellular in our brains?

#

I can also flip it around and turn it into a emitter

#

or a jammer

#

cellular in the brain isn't happening

#

quantum entangled transmitters in the brain

#

now that's more like it

#

That would be quality
Or a full quantum computer in the brain
Even better
But taking out data from the quantum PC
Not at all good

#

u don't need the pc inside your head

#

quantum communication doesn't suffer from latency

#

can't say what data rates it might have since we didn't make one

#

yet

#

over 9000 zettabytes/s

#

I hope

#

quantum computing isn't done with binary

#

Oops

subtle hawk
#

yeah, it's done with qubits

#

it's actually noted as qbit

#

it's read as qubit

severe falcon
#

our brains are already frickin quantum computers

subtle hawk
#

nah, just very efficient neural network

severe falcon
#

well we dont use "bits" though

#

or at least when they tested with some lab mice, they found that its "bit" could have 15 different values

subtle hawk
#

it's at least an electricity state

#

yeah

severe falcon
#

yeah i guess its not quantum then, but do they even know how a qbit works?

subtle hawk
#

quantum computing is weird

#

it's like a completely new logic based on uncertainty

severe falcon
#

yeah but how close are we to making uncertainty?

#

just a bunch of schrodinger's cat boxes hooked up with wires

subtle hawk
#

lol

obtuse dawn
#

And this is why you don't use /var/tmp to hold files where it's imperative they get copied... Because if that server reboots for any reason.....

What is the image depicting

subtle hawk

are your camera glitched or something

severe falcon

No it was working perfectly fine, that is not a glitch

subtle hawk
#

so why was it half filtered?

severe falcon
#

That isnt a filter, that is the unedited image

#

Any idea?

severe falcon
#

Heres a hint, any digital camera would take the picture like that

subtle hawk
#

Wild guess but did you take a photo of the same place in daytime and nighttime and then merged them?

Wait that has editing in place
Nevermind

Oooof

subtle hawk
#

THE SIZE OF THE GAME WILL BE REDUCED TO HALFED THEY SAID
GUESS WHAT
THEY REDUCED HALF THE SIZE OF MY WALLET INSTEAD

#

Like seriously

#

Ate up 84 GB after showing this

severe falcon
#

It sounds like they have never heard of optimization

subtle hawk
#

I lost 84 GB of my data
I have a 2 TB limit
It took friggin 84 GB of it

severe falcon
#

Wait so it was 84 gigs DOWNLOAD?

#

Have they never heard of a zip file before?

subtle hawk
#

It downloaded 84 GB of whatever before showing that error message like wtf Microsoft

severe falcon
#

Thats awful

#

I kinda wish they went back to being as optimized as nintendo with the n64

subtle hawk
#

It was supposed to reduced the size of Sea of Thieves (39.2 GB on the One X) to 18.7~19.5 GB
Guess what happened instead

severe falcon
#

The original animal crossing was made for n64 but it was finished so late that they put it on gamecube, since it had an n64 emulator, but the game on the disc is less than 43 mb, which is how much ram the gamecube has. Meaning you can open the gamecube while the game is running, take the disc out, and it will never crash unless you do something dumb

subtle hawk
#

And even though a 2TB limit is extremely big for normal people
It's not for power users like me
And what if I was on a small data plan?

#

Now cut 84 GB off it

severe falcon
#

Well they assume your isp doesnt base it off of data

subtle hawk
#

Their assumption is shit

severe falcon
#

Well i cant even get data based internet service where i live, its all unlimited but the speed is limited

subtle hawk
#

Mine has a speed limit of 100 Mbps and a 2TB cap

severe falcon
#

Mine is just 100 Mbps but it has never gone past 35

subtle hawk
#

Mine goes at least 95 Mbps

severe falcon
#

But maybe its unlimited cuz my isp could care less about the measly amount of data we could use, since they also do gigabit in the city

#

I love working on the weekend where i can watch youtube for 8 hours straight and never see it buffering

subtle hawk
#

Just download it

severe falcon
#

It still takes forever since when it buffers that means my internet has gone down to kbps

subtle hawk
#

That hurts

severe falcon
#

So downloading wouldnt work

#

They are better than they were though, it used to average 280 kbps

subtle hawk
#

@severe falcon so basically you captured the lightning

#

but due to rolling shutter it didn't last for a full frame

#

should've noticed the storm earlier Thonk

severe falcon
#

yeeeeeee

#

though its weird how it just STOPS

#

like i captured the speed of light

subtle hawk
#

well, it's an arc

#

it doesn't dim like lightbulbs

severe falcon
#

i know but there was light and then there was absolutely nothing inbetween columns of pixels

#

though i guess camera shutter speeds are quite slow compared to display drawing

#

and then light is several magnitudes faster

subtle hawk
#

yeah

#

you can even see tearing on normal light switches

#

or better example is misaligned recording of crt tv

severe falcon
#

yeah but thats not as cool as accidently timing lightning

subtle hawk
#

if shutter speed doesn't sync with screen's drawing rate you would see flashing black bars

#

still, stroboscopic effect is an interesting thing

#

like how you can restrict the frame rate of your eyes with it

severe falcon
#

is that where it makes the weird lines when you take a pic of a screen?

subtle hawk
#

yes

severe falcon
#

i hate that cuz my phone always has it when i try to take a pic of my rpi

subtle hawk
#

most cameras can finetune the shutter speed to eliminate it

severe falcon
#

i never thought of changing shutter speed

subtle hawk
#

I mean automatically

severe falcon
#

yeah mine doesnt do it automatically

subtle hawk
#

๐Ÿค”

#

also welp couldn't get a desktop environment to run on that linux

#

but I think I'll put my rpi project on hold

#

now I'm more interested in that FPGA board ๐Ÿ‘€

#

which I borrowed from my lab class

severe falcon
#

so i just remembered that i have a python project due tomorrow, but then i saw its due tomorrow at 8AM

subtle hawk
#

oof

subtle hawk
#

anyone had success getting the hardened mainline kernal on arch to work?

subtle hawk
#

I'm having boot issues and I think it's a filesystem or video module

subtle hawk
#

got any logs

severe falcon
#

So i finished my bezier tool and it did like a 14th degree bezier curve in faster than i can blink time

subtle hawk
#

saw the VII numbers

#

hello radeon instinct

tame topaz
#

@subtle hawk VII more like V2 amirite

subtle hawk
#

more like enterprise grade card wrapped in a consumer shroud

tame topaz
#

yep.

#

If this thing were cheaper then it would nuke Nvidia for sure.

subtle hawk
#

that would mean selling it at a huge loss

tame topaz
#

Good lord, seems like the VII is overvolted to hell and back

#

Look at that ridiculous performance per watt boost when you undervolt

subtle hawk
#

Nvidia: Shrinks die to increase efficiency
AMD: Shrinks die to overclock it to Andromeda and back

severe falcon
#

So the bezier tool i made starts to visibly habe a delay between clicking and drawing at the 12 point mark. But at that point it has to calculate 6600 lines, 6600 points on said lines, and return 100 of those points to be drawn in a single frame(i havent made the display on a seperate thread yet) so i think its doing pretty well

subtle hawk
#

No, arch doesn't have kernel logs enabled by default

#

once I figure out how to dump those I'll go through them

#

(I still have the standrard kernel installed, so the system is OK)

subtle hawk
subtle hawk
#

skip

#

Update time! = Wallet time! for the One X

subtle hawk
#

@severe falcon that sounds like a very bad algorithm

#

There's a generalized parametric function for it, use that

severe falcon
#

@subtle hawk for n-point bezier curves?

subtle hawk
#

yeah

#

this one is O(tn)

severe falcon
#

that IS what my algorithm does, idk if it does it in O(tn) but thats what it does

subtle hawk
#

instead of O(tn^2) of yours

#

hm really

#

then why did you say 6600 lines

#

nCr can be cached

severe falcon
#

this is what it does

#

those moving lines have to be calculated for every t

subtle hawk
#

yeah that formula only requires you to do a sum of n+1 terms

severe falcon
#

a sum of n terms and every single t value

subtle hawk
#

yeah, and you can even reuse t^x and (1-t)^x terms in each iteration

severe falcon
#

ok so i dont understand why its multiplying the points

#

i did it how that gif does it, where you draw lines between the points t% of the way from p0 to p1, etc and then draw lines between the points of those lines t% of the way from those points etc etc

#

but this formula is confusing cuz it has no mention of how to actually get useful numbers from it

subtle hawk
#

B and P are vectors, yeah

#

and if n is 1, the formula is reduced to straight segment

severe falcon
#

ok im calculating an example

subtle hawk
#

B = (1-t)P0 + tP1

severe falcon
#

not for the linear one, for the quadratic one

subtle hawk
#

ah

severe falcon
#

so at t = 0.5, when i do the x coordinates, i get 0.5 as the answer

#

but it should be 1

#

oh wait i labelled them wrong woops

subtle hawk
severe falcon
#

the 0,2 should be 2,0

#

ok its now 1 LeanderXD

#

huh, well im gonna try it and see which ones are faster

#

probably saturday since i have a report due tomorrow

#

yeah which is basically what i was using, but it just does it in a less literal way

#

OH AND NOW I WONT HAVE UNDEFINED SLOPE ERRORS

#

well sweet

subtle hawk
#

what language do you write this in btw

severe falcon
#

python

subtle hawk
#

ah nice

severe falcon
#

am using it for a paint program and i have to learn python for data mining class so i thought i might aswell

subtle hawk
#

I can give you an efficient script for it

severe falcon
#

nah ill just edit the one i have

subtle hawk
#

just make sure you cache t^n, (1-t)^x and nCx terms

severe falcon
#

i have to redo it to use numpy for the lists anyway

#

yeah im gonna do that

subtle hawk
#

t steps should be flexible with curve length which can roughly be determined by input points' total path length

severe falcon
#

so far ive done t with 100 steps and i havent really found a problem

subtle hawk
#

that's nice

severe falcon
#

plus the display size is 800 x 480 and my window size is like 320x240

#

so i might be using too much

severe falcon
#

wow they need to make wifi adapters with fans in them cuz mine is literally overheating and barely working rn

subtle hawk
#

@severe falcon tf kind of adapter do u have

severe falcon
#

i sent a pic of it before, this is the first time its gotten this hot though

#

its just a belkin adapter

subtle hawk
severe falcon
#

but like it was at least 50 C on the plastic shell

subtle hawk
#

my intel adaptors never heated up that hard

severe falcon
#

rn its like 35-40 which is normal

subtle hawk
#

the mellanox NICs yes

#

since 10Gbits is taxing on it

severe falcon
#

well the only difference i can think of is i was using netflix, which ive never done with it before

#

but i think it was actually getting so hot it stopped working cuz it kept on disconnecting from wifi over and over

severe falcon
#

@subtle hawk @unborn flicker so i made the algorithm, but its doing something weird, no matter the number of points, it starts off going fine until about the halfway point and then it heads straight to the origin

#

Oh boy it gets better, i found that calculating the nCx was giving the wrong numbers but it still goes to the origin, except its more of a curve instead of a spike

#

I mean thats what its calculating now

#

It used to be doing the wrong thing, but now its doing exactly like pascals triangle and still not working

#

Lemme get a pic of the code

#

That for loop goes from 0 to n-1 since the length of the point list is one more than what the equation needs

#

Bclist is the nCx values

#

Oh i just figured it out

#

Im missing a t^i term in the calclongcryland

#

WAIT A MIN NO IM NOT

#

Cuz pow(t,i) is there

subtle hawk
#

try logging each parameter and find what result in 0

severe falcon
#

Yeah cuz it has to be between 0 and 1

#

Range goes to the 2nd number minus 1

#

It makes no sense whatsoever

#

This is my first semester using python and believe me, i have the same opinion as you

#

No no thats the value for t

subtle hawk
#

Range goes to the 2nd number minus 1
this is more convenient than you might thought

#

for example, if you want to split two ranges at k, you can just do [:k] and [k:]

#

and you won't accidentally get another copy

severe falcon
#

Welp i have phys lab starting in a few mins so if you think of a problem i have just @ me, rn the numbers for bcalc are sporadically decreasing and the last n calcs are 0, with n being the num of points

#

Its also starting off with a 1 and n-1 0s after it before the decimals

#

Wait i think im on to something

#

Flist stores t points it gets from the algorithm

#

This is just t = 10

#

Yes but im using the length of plist as n, which the algrithm on wiki has the points labelled as p0 p1 p2 and n is 2

subtle hawk
#

why is z goes up to .147 and go back down to 0

severe falcon
#

I do not know but i cant really talk anymore, lab is going on but ill be back in 3 hours max

#

But that z is the issue and why its going to 0

#

And then that makes it go to 0,0

subtle hawk
#

z axis value

#

me too

severe falcon
#

Z is not z axis value, its the result of the calculation that will be multiplied by p2, the last point

#

It should be 1 at rhe end so that the endpoint of the curve is at the end of the line

#

But if i change the range to n+1, the index of plist, and bclist dont exist

#

Not n+1, i meant n

#

Like from 0 to n

#

I see the problem

#

No no, its the OPPOSITE problem, since n is one more than the algorithm calls for, it needs to be (1-t)^((n-1)-i) since i is n-1

#

Gonna change n to be length -1 and then fix the whole thing

#

Its cuz len(p0,p1,p2) is 3, but n in the algorithm needs to be 2

#

I used n without making it -1

#

Like the way it is for every i

#

Welp ill find out if it works later, i gotta learn about string superposition now

#

TIL that the biggest problem with my programs is me

severe falcon
#

Nah im just saying im an idiot

#

Im a senior in college with comp sci major, im not allowed to reconsider

#

Also after spamming 42 points, it shows no signs of delay

#

So i now have an efficient bezier tool

subtle hawk
#

nice

subtle hawk
subtle hawk
#

24gb ram ๐Ÿ‘€

#

wut

#

16+8 or 8x3 v

subtle hawk
#

yeah, odd stick configuration is uncommon

#

*looks at old laptop which has 4+2gb ram*

#

Ya old-ass PCs were like that

#

3/6/12/24/40 GB configs
Seen em all

mental coyote
#

sway, eh? haven't seen too many folk using that one.

#

been using a lotta the off-brand DEs, lately. stuff like budgie or deepin. pantheon's a total bish on arch/arch derivs, tho.

subtle hawk
#

it's a laptop, 16+8

#

and sway isn't a DE, it's a compositor

#

wayland is fun

#

fuck nvidia for not supporting it properly

#

lol

#

easiest way to relate sway to x11 is to consider it the wayland version of i3

mental coyote
#

I said I had been using off-brand DEs, not that sway was one.

#

As far as wayland. I wonder if that's ever going to replace xorg.

severe falcon
#

at least your ram setup isnt 4 x 4 3

subtle hawk
#

tbh I wanted nvidia gpu on my new pc

#

but since it has bad drivers for linux so I'm not sure ๐Ÿค”

past bison
#

im starting to get VERY annoyed at the issue with my pc... i can some times run games on it for days on end without problem, some times it takes just minutes for the gpu outputs to crash/die upon starting up anything

#

right now, im testing to run with my old gpu in the pc to see if the issue is the gpu itself or rather something else

subtle hawk
#

What Graphics card do you have

#

Even better, what's your config

past bison
#

i7 4930k, 32gb (4x8gb) dominator platinum 2133mhz ddr3, asus rampage 4 black edition, asus strix gtx 1060 6gb OC edition
used to be a i7 4960x but switched to my previous 4930k because i thought the cpu was the cause but no, it happens even after cpu swap, testing with my old gpu atm actually

subtle hawk
#

Wait
I thought the supported mem types for 4930k were DDR3 1333/1600/1866

#

Same for 496OX

past bison
#

2133mhz xmp profile

subtle hawk
#

Does your board have onboard display outputs

past bison
#

it does and it displays AA, which means no problems, when my problem occurs though some times when i reboot my pc after the problem occurs, i get random error codes on the code display

#

you seriously think a x79 board has onboard graphics?

subtle hawk
#

It's either your GPU or maybe the slot you installed your card to

#

Or drivers

past bison
#

tested several pcie slots, both cpu linked slots and asmedia controller linked slots, happens on both

subtle hawk
#

My card crashed after a Nvidia driver update
had to uninstall them in safe mode later on

past bison
#

and yes i have tested different drivers, prior to the 4xx.xx drivers, i got mostly WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR bsods or just sudden pc restarts, updating to 4xx.xx drivers has increased the occurrence of the problem but now it doesnt throw me the bsods or just suddenly restarting but rather just stop sending output signals to the monitors

subtle hawk
#

when you started seeing WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR, did it have anything else with it

past bison
#

windows 10 bsods shows barely anything but the general error message so no

subtle hawk
#

It usually occurs if using sysprep/if you overclocked your gpu/overheat/bios

past bison
#

it happened even if i underclocked the gpu

subtle hawk
#

Did you try overclock your CPU?

#

And did you check your GPU temps

past bison
#

have tried both stock cpu settings and overclocked cpu settings, doesnt matter

#

i have never seen the gpu temps go above 65C so that shouldnt be the problem

subtle hawk
#

Do you have the latest bios?

past bison
#

the 0701 version doesnt even work on my system so im still on the 0603 bios version, 0701 doesnt detect my raid array when i set the sata controller setting to raid mode

subtle hawk
past bison
#

i think i tried 0801 and it couldnt even POST with that

#

and no, i havent tried 0501

#

but i have big doubts about it being bios issue if my pc is running fine with a 780ti but randomly errors with a 1060 6gb

subtle hawk
#

Maybe your board can't handle it or something
The best CPU+GPU combo is supposedly 4930K+980Ti

#

the stuff you need to do sometimes to play some JP games is quality

#

Not really
Kinda understand Japs so just decided to give the OS a weebover

subtle hawk
#

Meanwhile my win10 install is home single language which literally not allow changing OS language as the name suggests

#

But still allows changing the locale

#

So the result is that I have English win10 with Japanese locale

tame topaz
#

Gotta nuke my laptop drive and install it with win 7/10 some time

#

8.1 sucks

subtle hawk
#

lol 8.1

tame topaz
#

Don't blame me it's my dad's old work laptop

subtle hawk
#

Yeah, good luck though

tame topaz
#

tfw personal laptop too weak for art

subtle hawk
#

I remember my mom once had a win8 laptop that doesn't allow any os installation at all

tame topaz
#

Already having a portable nuke handy

#

No time to get to it yet.

#

Probably.

#

Well I mean laptop BIOS varies wildly by manufacturer so I guess this is no different

subtle hawk
#

If you mean you can't install any other edition of Windows 10 then there's a way to solve that v

subtle hawk
#

'wonder if wayland will ever replace xorg'
I certainly hope it does eventually

#

wayland isn't just spinning window memes

#

it's a ton smoother than I get on xorg when it comes to apps that run natively on it (qt5, gtk+ 3, and a lot of other common gui libs support wayland natively)

#

only issue is when you're using a dated app that doesn't run except on xorg. xwayland is a thing, but it's basically the same as WiNE

#

in that you'll have weird bugs with some apps

pulsar saddle
#

one other issue I can think of is wayland support on nvidia cards

wayland has troubles with those as nvidia keeps pushing their eglstreams api instead of using standard gbm buffer api that basically everyone (wayland devs, amd, intel etc.) has agreed to develop together

which means proprietary drivers won't work with wayland unless kernel is patched to support eglstreams, otherwise we have to resort to nouveau

but iirc nouveau is not really efficient, especially on newer cards that had less time to get reverse-engineered

so I see the situation as a sad one for nvidia users

#

though what I know about wayland&nvidia situation is based on info from several months ago, maybe it's better now?

mental coyote
#

That's nvidia for you. Throw wrenches in the works for everyone else.

subtle hawk
#

a lot of ppl are working on wayland yes

#

but the majority of linux users don't need a GUI

#

so compared to other core parts it's gonna be slow

severe falcon
#

@subtle hawk so when i use the ping command on z23 sensei, what is the heartbeat part?

subtle hawk
#

something discord API specific

severe falcon
#

ah ok

subtle hawk
#

Is there any way for me to successfully replace the drive actuator?

#

no

#

don't even think about it

#

replacing the actuator requires a absolutely sterile room and very steady hands and a good understanding of hardrives

#

I have a sterile dustproof lab nearby

severe falcon
#

is the drive actuator part of the arm, or the spin motor?

subtle hawk
severe falcon
#

OH

#

half the old/broken HDDs ive taken apart have the arm completely unable to come off without breaking it

mental coyote
#

Makes me glad I switched to a SSD

severe falcon
#

though i have the luck of my electronics breaking but still able to work, like my 3TB broke, probably due to the process of moving the comp, but it was still functioning with 931 GB of total space

subtle hawk
#

I am currently in full SSD mode

severe falcon
subtle hawk
#

@severe falcon I need to copy that drive D:\ of yours ๐Ÿ‘€

severe falcon
#

Its actually just another games drive, but i wanted to flex on the #al-art peeps

subtle hawk
#

lmao

severe falcon
#

im at max HDDs though, i can only shove so much into an ITX case

#

and dont even mention cable management, its like a mass of worms at this point

subtle hawk
#

That's quite the cable noodles you have ๐Ÿ‘€

severe falcon
#

oh you know its only graphics card power, mobo power, 3 sata cables, and 2 fan cables passing through the small opening between spinning fans and the metal wall the mobo is attatched to

subtle hawk
#

Graphics Card cable are thicker than 2 pens sometimes vv

severe falcon
#

at least this card only needs one cable

subtle hawk
#

Oof

severe falcon
#

my old AMDs needed 2 6-pins each

subtle hawk
tame topaz
#

Nice.

subtle hawk
#

This is epic

severe falcon
#

my displays pulled a switcheroo, where they swap only the windows, and they just did it again

subtle hawk
#

@severe falcon is ur GPU that potato?

#

or are you running some legacy OS

#

cause windows 10 keeps the display setup using their hardware IDs

#

so does modern linux

severe falcon
#

am using win 7 ultimate and its a GTX 950

subtle hawk
#

well there's your problem

severe falcon
#

but its not the actual displays switching

subtle hawk
#

win7 is a legacy OS

severe falcon
#

like my main monitor that has all the desktop icons still has all the icons, but my youtube and discord switch monitors

subtle hawk
#

yeah that's bcz 7 keeps the monitors set by their connection order

#

so things like that happen more often than not

#

I highly recommend switching to 10

#

since 7 will EoL very soon

#

Or 8.1

#

not 8.1

#

god

#

I loved it v

mental coyote
#

Don't curse anyone with that heresy.

subtle hawk
#

8 and 8.1 are the vista of the current cycle

#

Ya no
They are a blessing for old PC's
I swear to god Windows 8.1 felt the fastest among 7/8.1/10 on my old PC

#

And i's not that bad
It's just touch-friendly

#

back when MS under the old CEO tried to push for the Apple experience and with as much Linux hate as ever

severe falcon
#

i went to 7 FROM 8.1 cuz it had a glitch where the process called "system" would take literally 99% CPU usage for no reason

subtle hawk
#

Nice

#

probably the broken ass integrity service

#

Windows 7 has more problems than anything else

#

I always recommend ppl to upgrade to the latest there is for both security, compatibility and reliability

#

But less than Ballmer

#

unless your pc can't handle it

#

then limit the fuck out of your internet connection

#

w

severe falcon
#

so the system process was the integrity service?

subtle hawk
#

most likely

#

what was the name of it?

#

"system" in task manager is a amalgam of services

#

It's probably svchost.exe

#

usually divided by their common purpose

#

they're all svchosts

severe falcon
#

cuz i would be playing Just Cause 2 and then drop to like 10 fps from the CPU doing that even though the GPU was basically idling

subtle hawk
#

oof

severe falcon
#

so my upgrade was: get better CPU and move to win 7

subtle hawk
#

'maybe [the wayland situation] is better by now?'
nope, nvidia still being a bag of dicks as usual @pulsar saddle

#

speaking of which, I should work on the kernel patch for the new host

#

I don't recognize wayland as a successor to xorg

#

at least not yet

mental coyote
#

Nvidia. Or as Yamato named 'em, Novideo.

subtle hawk
#

the thing is too raw

mental coyote
#

xorg is crufty as fuck, tho.

subtle hawk
#

novideo doesn't rlly care about GeForce linux drivers

severe falcon
#

and amd is absolute minimal driver (support)

subtle hawk
#

because let's be honest

#

linux users are a minuscule minority compared to windows

mental coyote
#

Home computing, yes. But I guarantee even nvidia's running linux for their servers.

subtle hawk
#

unless you take enterprise then they use special drivers meant for their Quadros and Teslas

#

I have 8 of their compute GPUs running simulations for me

#

never had a problem with their drivers

#

since I don't need them in 3D mode

mental coyote
#

Also, of course MS runs the homefront. How many years did they lockdown the majority of oem boxes to their os? (And to be truthful, the plethora of options in Linux confuses the shit outta non-techy Joes and Janes.)

subtle hawk
#

MS is doing what linux will never do

#

make is simple

mental coyote
#

Wouldn't we accuse Apple of that, even before MS?

subtle hawk
#

both of them

mental coyote
#

Accepted.

subtle hawk
#

linux never aims to replace those 2

#

and it never will

#

linux is powerful

#

very powerful

mental coyote
#

Let's be real, systemd is an attempt at "simplifying" Linux, at least init/default daemon-wise.

subtle hawk
#

but with that power comes a lot of knowledge

#

it's not

#

systemd is one essential piece of software

#

or would you rather run everything in screen instances

#

or the like

mental coyote
#

Hey. When Poettering himself called it a "building block" for the os, seems like I do have a point.

subtle hawk
#

the author may be a cunt

#

but that doesn't mean his software is bad

mental coyote
#

Look. I'm not totally against the guy. Hell, Pulseaudio was a shitshow for about 2 years, but is pretty cut and dry, now.

subtle hawk
#

we don't talk about pulseaudio

#

the new generation of sysadmins have it so easy

#

a few scripts here, some chef recipes there and done

mental coyote
#

Meanwhile, we're from the shell script ALL the things crew.

subtle hawk
#

back in my day we used to manually install servers, configure them, join them to the cluster

mental coyote
#

Of course, we could mention another sound server: How 'bout dat OSS?

subtle hawk
#

@mental coyote pls miss me with that OSS initative bullshit

#

god are those ppl ever so annoying

mental coyote
#

rofl

#

hell, only folk using it anymore are (some) BSDs

flint bobcat
#

@subtle hawk what linux distro should i choose?

#

i want to dual boot

subtle hawk
#

this question again

flint bobcat
#

but i dont know what to choose

subtle hawk
#

how well do u know linux

flint bobcat
#

fairly well

#

i know how to use the CLI

subtle hawk
#

fairly well

#

would you be able to partition a drive, mount them, setup the bootloader, display server, desktop environment and drvers

flint bobcat
#

are you implying arch linux

subtle hawk
#

as well as apply microcode patches to the CPU

flint bobcat
#

uh

#

i could learn that

subtle hawk
#

arch isn't the only one like that

flint bobcat
#

can i use kali

subtle hawk
#

only skids use kali

flint bobcat
#

i mean

#

what other security os is there?

subtle hawk
#

Parrot

flint bobcat
#

cause i only know kali

subtle hawk
#

Qubes

#

I can make a more efficient hacking tool from bsd or arch

#

lmao

flint bobcat
subtle hawk
#

than use these "hacking OS"es

flint bobcat
#

yeah

#

because i want to go into netsec

#

so i should just do arch?

subtle hawk
#

netsec huh

#

then either debian or ubuntu

#

the latter is a more user friendly and locked down version of the former

flint bobcat
#

also what are bsd and arch for?

subtle hawk
#

trihards

#

like me

flint bobcat
#

well, you did say linux is powerful

subtle hawk
#

I'm gonna say what everyone before me said

#

That being

#

unless you know what you're doing don't touch those

flint bobcat
#

but can't i learn

subtle hawk
#

I used arch before v

flint bobcat
subtle hawk
#

u can

#

get VM or sacrificial pc and break it to ur heart's content

flint bobcat
subtle hawk
flint bobcat
#

how far are you able to customize?

subtle hawk
#

Arch has no limits

#

all the way

flint bobcat
#

woah

subtle hawk
#

that's why it's dangerous

flint bobcat
#

so would i be able to study netsec in arch?

subtle hawk
#

ofc

severe falcon
#

"no limits" that just makes me think of C and the sheer amount of seg faults i got

subtle hawk
#

if I had time I would work on improving ACPI for linux

#

Go for it

#

as I said

#

if I had time

#

Replace sleep with help

#

3 hours won't make a dent

#

sad

severe falcon
#

yo yamato, on my rpi should apt-get upgrade auto update the python it comes with? or do i need to update it another way?

subtle hawk
#

can't remember what python it comes with

severe falcon
#

well im just asking if it SHOULD update it, cuz its definitely not the current python version

subtle hawk
#

dependens

#

if u need the new stuff ye

#

if not then not rlly

severe falcon
#

well i really need the numpy library updated, im 3 vesions behind of what we use in class, and it had a really convenient function that it doesnt have now

subtle hawk
#

I just have my editor hooked into my server

#

so when I run it runs on the server not locally

severe falcon
#

but apt-get upgrade should update it if it can right? and if it doesnt does that mean it hasnt been made for rpi yet?

subtle hawk
#

not sure python3 is in the raspi repos

#

you may need a PPA

severe falcon
#

yeah i have python 3.5 on it rn

#

but i think i need version 1.15 of numpy and currently it is 1.12

subtle hawk
#

it should be capable to upgrade to 3.7

flint bobcat
#

@subtle hawk so just use a VM at first?

subtle hawk
#

as for deps u have pip

#

@flint bobcat ye

severe falcon
#

pip?

subtle hawk
#

so u don't break ur actual pc

#

ye pip

#

it's the package manager for python

#

like npm for nodejs, nuget for C#, gradle for java

severe falcon
#

ah i assume it just works in the background when i apt-get?

subtle hawk
#

no u manually call it

severe falcon
#

oh ok, ill see about doing that tomorrow

flint bobcat
#

@subtle hawk virtual box or vmware?

subtle hawk
#

your pick

#

hell u can use HyperV if u so desire

flint bobcat
#

i guess vbox

#

nah ill go with vmware

#

saw it has netsec stuff

subtle hawk
flint bobcat

#

@subtle hawk in the link

#

what speed uplink is it

#

100Mbits?

#

Ya

#

and what speed is your ISP providing

#

Upto 300

#

hmm

#

open up the network adapter properties

#

and check its stats

#

see what does it really report on the link

#

Oh
100

Looks like I have someone to murder today

severe falcon
#

ive looked at that before and its changed for me several times

subtle hawk
#

@subtle hawk upgrade ur toaster router

severe falcon
#

sometimes it tells me its 75 Mbps, other times it says 180 Mbps, but my ISP is supposed to give 100 Mbps and i have seen an actual 35 Mbps

subtle hawk
#

I have an AC router ๐Ÿ‘€

#

big doubt

#

Netgear R6120

#

all 802.11ac routers come with gigabit lan

severe falcon
#

do you need a special ethernet cable for Gigabit?

subtle hawk
#

I dunno

#

huh

#

it doesn't have gigabit

#

now that's a ripoff

#

you deadass wasted money on it

#

no

#

someone should smacc u for not reading the spec sheet before buying it

#

100Mbits can be done even on 802.11n

#

I didn't buy it v
My ISP gave it to me
I asked them to give me a gigabit-capable AC router
I should've just bought my own

severe falcon
subtle hawk
#

u should've

#

yes

#

also wifi

#

on pc

#

absolute heresy

severe falcon
#

yes

subtle hawk
severe falcon
#

well we gonna move in like 90 days and i never had a problem

subtle hawk
#

mine shows glorious 10Gbits

severe falcon
#

anyway so what exactly does that "speed" mean? is that whats incoming to the router? or whats incoming to my comp?

subtle hawk
#

god bless mellanox NICs

#

WiFi however is at 800 Mbps so no problems with that

#

it means the negociated protocol speeds

#

@subtle hawk it's still bottlenecked by the 100Mbits port

severe falcon
#

ok mine is fluctuating so what does that mean?

subtle hawk
#

you'll only see higher speeds between wireless devices

#

it meand ur on wifi @severe falcon

severe falcon
#

but thats not ISP speed right? thats just between PC and router?

subtle hawk
#

So I need to throw that router and directly attach it to my PC's ethernet v

#

@severe falcon ye

severe falcon
#

ah ok, no wonder its going to 270% ISP speed

subtle hawk
#

Can the optical port be used for optic fiber?

severe falcon
#

anyway maybe next house will have ethernet in more than one room

#

i dont even know what my router is, its probably some heresy cancer that you would ban me for

subtle hawk
#

@subtle hawk the fucc no

#

that port is for audio

severe falcon
#

Optical
used for sound

subtle hawk
#

it carries decent stereo

#

because unlike wire it doesn't have interference

#

for that crisp sound

severe falcon
#

oh yeah, wish my rpi didnt have interference on its audio

subtle hawk
#

ground ur power supply

#

and rpi

severe falcon
#

and its power cable even has the little cylinder that is supposed to help with that

subtle hawk
#

no it doesn't

#

that's just snake oil

severe falcon
#

thinkpitz tho it might be the wireless logitech keyboard thats causing it

subtle hawk
#

why do u think none of the decent cables have it

severe falcon
#

what mean ground my power supply? it does it even when its plugged into the wall

#

wait so these dont work?

subtle hawk
#

no

#

they're just snake oil

severe falcon
#

oof

subtle hawk
#

some myth from the 2000s

severe falcon
#

well how do i ground a battery bank or a plug?

#

i can understand the battery bank not being grounded but i dont think 3 prong usb plugs exist

subtle hawk
#

they do

#

and battery banks usually have a lot of residual in the circuit

severe falcon
#

oh so the battery bank would be worse than the 2 prong

subtle hawk
#

ye

severe falcon
#

though do rpi 3s even have decent audio?

#

i would kinda want to see if i could put like a n64 emulator on it

subtle hawk
#

retropie is a thing

#

it has decent audio

#

not the best

severe falcon
#

yeah i knew there were things like that

subtle hawk
#

but decent

severe falcon
#

hrmmm i wonder if the offbrand wiiu gamecube controller adapter would work with an rpi

If only

#

I won't be surprised if Japan makes weeb chips tho

mental coyote
#

Yamato, get a foundry. Weeb chips is just fucked enough to sell.

subtle hawk
#

I know right

#

I mean Japan loves their vending machines so much that they created an Isekai manga for it

#

How f@%ked up is that

mental coyote
#

Fuck, they have used panty dispensers. I doubt nothing regarding the SUTANDO POWA of Japanese degen.

subtle hawk
#

I know

#

Their madness is one of a kind

#

And we love it

mental coyote
#

(I gotta give 'em cred, tho. That shit is ballsy)

severe falcon
#

They did infact make 2d waifus real 3d waifus with the gatebox

#

Which they just need to allow you to put any 3d model in it

subtle hawk
#

I saw that

#

But VRChat>Gatebox

severe falcon
#

Except vr chat is icky real girls

#

Like best case scenario, its a flesh and blood human female

#

0/10

subtle hawk
#

@severe falcon that little cylinder you sent is just a wire weight lol

severe falcon
#

Well the wire that i have literally came with it so i didnt waste money

#

@flint bobcat imagine if capcom pulled a pokemon go and made an app where you can have your own navi and do battles when you connect to networks and go to certain websites

subtle hawk
#

It'd be Pokemon GO+Death+Weebness on the roads

severe falcon
#

Well yeah except you wouldnt need to move and theres no reason to run in traffic

#

I mean obviosuly dont make it where you have to go to DIFFERENT networks and websites

subtle hawk
#

Ya

#

Pokemon GO was crap

#

I never played it
Especially after my friend got hit by a bike while playing it

severe falcon
#

Well my work was a pokestop so we had people drive around in our parking lot like 2 hours before we opened, and every employee was playing it, but the wifi didnt extend outside and the gps didnt put you close enough to the stop if you were inside

subtle hawk
#

I stopped playing once it won't boot on my very old phone

flint bobcat
#

@severe falcon would be awesome

severe falcon
#

honestly if they just make cosmetic stuff and giant chip packs cost real money, they could make BANK

#

@flint bobcat after the VN lets join forces and make a megaman ripoff like that

flint bobcat
#

i need to learn networking for that kind of stuff

subtle hawk
#

aria
networking

severe falcon
#

well thats if you want to ACTUALLY connect to websites and stuff, you could probably just tell it to ping the site to see if it can access it and then randomly generate a lil map that your navi can move around on with like the logo of the website or something

#

honestly i think i might try to make a lil test game of it

#

at this point phones can handle simple 3d stuff with unreal engine right?

subtle hawk
#

ye

flint bobcat
#

but my career is networking AkagiLul

#

or thats what im planning for

severe falcon
#

if you are talking about social networking then everyone with a career has that as a 2nd career emileSip

subtle hawk
#

it's social engineering

#

not networking

flint bobcat
#

its more netsec

severe falcon
#

oh i always heard social networking for like trying to spread your network with connections to people who can get you jobs

subtle hawk
#

tf

flint bobcat
#

wait im confused

subtle hawk
#

first time I hear about it

#

I mean yeah that's how u get places

#

but like nobody ever mentions it

flint bobcat
#

yamato, whats the difference fo network engineer to a network admin

severe falcon
#

if only unreal could do 2d where it isnt sprite sheets

subtle hawk
#

one designs and builds a network

#

the latter just maintains it

flint bobcat
#

both sound good

severe falcon
#

dont think it applies too much to networking, but the things you are taught might be completely unused in industry

subtle hawk
#

nah

#

networking is networking

#

it didn't change much

#

if at all

#

also learned that my fag ISP isn't giving me IPv6 when they have the capability to do it

flint bobcat
severe falcon
#

yeah but we had a database class, and one of the guys got a job doing database stuff for a giant local company. he said the stuff that we learned about how to make sure a database is efficient and clean without alot of nulls everywhere was throw out the window bcause "storage is basically free"

subtle hawk
#

big fucking doubt

#

if you don't optimize your database you'll have simple queries take minutes to complete

#

when your max target is 1 sec

flint bobcat
#

i feel like a network admin would need to know databases

subtle hawk
#

if I would meet your friend I would whoop his ass

flint bobcat
#

yamato goes to the gym confirmed makinamiheh

severe falcon
#

well idk the actual circumstances but thats what he said, basically as long as the database was working.
also it wasnt HIM who was saying it, he said he was told that by the upper database guys

subtle hawk
#

ripp that company

flint bobcat
#

i mean, even in the world today, im sure you need efficiency

severe falcon
#

like he got into the job and asked why its wasnt clean and efficient

subtle hawk
#

ofc u need efficiency
