I did it myself for the replica case which nearly halved the total cost
I never ended up ordering the case because I found a real one at a decent price but still, having the CAD files on hand will be helpful one day if I need spare parts
does Haswell for an intermediary system build suffice for daily tasks and old games?
mostly because, a, I have a hyper 212x with Intel bracket and DDR3 sticks laying around, and b, I have a very tight budget
I can make do with a good old Enlight case from circa 2004 because I'll just fabricate and update it to 2020s cheap case standards
i was using sandy bridge EP up till last year
so I'd say yes
it could keep up with battlefront and just about deal with BF 1 so
with a less heavily baggaged install and some extra haswell IPC it should be livable
like if i could stream battlefront at 50fps on that im sure haswell will be better off
Intel 4th gen still works today
I used a i7 2600 and gtx 1050 system for a very long time until I switched to am4 this summer
i somehow don't feel like things are that much revolutionary when I went from SB-E to a 5950X

I used a i5-2500K at 4.6GHz in my personal system all the way up to 2020

Sandy Bridge best architecture
I have a potato laptop with i3 2350M and it still runs rock solid
there are some 4590 and 4790 deals I found so I may as well go 4790
iirc it was the last gen to use solder for the IHS before Intel cheapened it with paste.
and btw, I still have a working Nehalem i7 950, but the board itself is dead, and X58 is getting hard to find in my area, even used.
but unless I have more cash to spare, I'll just keep it until I can afford another board.
not to mention it's 130W tdp puts Alder Lake's TDP to shame
It's amplified if you go back to the old system
But considering it's been 10 whole years, I did expect a little more than what I got
it's gonna be mostly a Skyrim/TES series machine with some old Assassin's Creed and Witcher. Tempted to play some Elden Ring but I'll need a beefy GPU for that.
all of those games ran practically GPU bound for my 3930K so
well not elden ring because i never touched that
but dark souls 1/2 would have undoubtedly not been a problem
i only dropped dsptde because 2.0 broke the resolution fix
i remember i had a pretty heavily modded install of skyrim and it ran flawlessly
a haswell i5 would still be more capable than a xbox one/ps4's CPU so pretty much anything from prior to this generation shouldn't be out of its abilities
found some deals with 4590 and 4790 so I'll perhaps go with the 4790 for at least a bit longer lifespan thanks to hyper threading.
if they don't cost much different the 4790 will be better overall certainly but
the 4590 might have better raw performance in a game
...until you disable HT in the BIOS for the 4790, which you can do anyway
I ran AC 2and 3 with my potato laptop and they worked just fine so graphic settings isn't exactly my isue
if you ask me
hm
the 4590 is like $10 cheaper, but I also will run android and Wii emulators (mostly to play OG Xenoblade and The Last Story) as well so running HT will be a slight improvement.
hm, I run a generic gamepad in AC2 and it runs
it works fine with an xbox gamepad per se but it relies on generic mapping instead of actually supporting the xbox layout
which is puzzling because i seem to remember AC1 actually being perfectly able to
ah. figures so
didn't know i7 4471 existed
you also didn't want to know it existed
intel stopped making sense with model numbers after Core 2
Pentium naming scheme made much more sense back in the day.
Coppermine and Willamette gang (in case you're wondering, Coppermine was the last gen of Pentium 3 before the first gen Pentium 4 Willamette making it obsolete)
my first PC was a 667 MHz Katmai Pentium 3 though. spent a lot of time tinkering it with my brothers to play StarCraft, Morrowind, and Max Payne
my x79 machine was formally named Gallatin so you can guess my opinion on that

now that's a artifact
Anyone remember Transmeta?
I wish it still run, just to see all the wacky shenanigans it does inside the hood now that I'm much more tech-literate
Not my first PC, but probably one of the weirdest
does it have power from its brick?
i have a slot pentium !!! sitting near me

Very cool
Power delivery is probably the least of the problems it has
here's some old tech too
I've seen worse heatsinks on newer machines
Somehow
This laptop had an aluminium sheet barely bigger than a socket 775 CPU package with no fins with a fan working overtime
how does a fan overwork itself?
laptop fans: me work hard
MacBook Air heatsink: you're a fan?
https://www.gsmarena.com/oneplus_announces_ace_pro_genshin_impact_limited_edition-news-56275.php
25th October 2022
That is fairly recent
Though I've seen another OnePlus with Genshin inspired "look" (for lack of better term), in terms of collab. twas like light green iirc
Found it, it was last year
https://www.gamerbraves.com/oneplus-features-genshin-impacts-sucrose-for-the-9rt/
the oneplus 9rt i think
the hu tao phone is the oneplus 10t?
hu tao is best

Hu tao is indeed the best
yes, hu tao is best
guys, would you recommend buying the oneplus 9 12/256 at 479€?
i'm seeing complaints about the processor
Sounds fine to me, although I'm not sure how good OnePlus software are nowadays
^most of the time OnePlus is about optimization issues.
The barebones are fine.
btw
will 12 gig in 4 stick setup create imbalances?
I have 3x2 GB DDR3 Corsair XMS3s laying around, and once my board is shipped I'm gonna get the 2x4 sticks.
If you're using 2GB stick you're probably not that concerned about absolute performance
I doubt their SPD is that good
they are all XMS3s with 1600 MHz clock. Timings won't be too much of an issue since I'll just use XMP.
and yeh.
iirc it's just that the main camera sensor doesn't have OIS (optical image stabilization)
other than that, the OP9 is a good device
It only takes 2 full days to compile from source :D
both a suspicious amount of Chromium fails and feet
y’all are right about the ease of use in usbc
Seems like the initial reviews of the rx 7000 is a mixed bag
although it seems to be a driver issue for poor performance in some programs
btrfs is as the name implies, better
Ext4 just has a longer time in use.

Wow. I might actually use this channel now that it's not hidden.
Me thinks they made too many and nobody is buying lmfao
Well, new series in February / March
But eh, I've said to myself I'd get Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, but at this point I'll just save up for Watch 6 Pro and get it on launch
you know it was always literally one command away
wasn't the command to join clubs broken or smth due to a discord update?
ye buy rime was around the server long before that was broken
joining clubs? that's nerd shit.
ur a nerd
damn why you expose me like this
They need to make a comeback, there defeat was unfair
I already asked this in the NewMaxx server but it's taking ages to get replies so I might as well also ask here:
Does anyone here have experience with Kioxia CD6 drives?
I found a second hand deal that seems a little too good
depends
I have a couple CD8s
is there any strange fuckyness/compatibility issues compared to competing drives?
shouldn't be
PS2
you are correct
modded PS2
I also have a gen 1 PS3 coming soon that I'll be attempting to repair
I fixed the CD drive belt for my Xbox last year. (cleaned it up too)
it's going to take me a while to get used to this new channels layout
yeah samsung foundry didn't go as well as expected
honestly a rx 5000 or 6000 series is more than good enough
plus who needs raytracing
no anime girl bad
Would probably end up like PhysX anyway
i remember having an old pentium 3
it was fucking dogshit
my 4090 goes brrrrrrrrr

im on a budget
so 4090 and 3090 are not an option
3080 is sketchy
plus realistically 2060 performance is what u need for 90% of games on decent graphics
different gpu class
I think I got to the limit of my 1080 Ti
in FS2020 when being near bespoke airports it starts to drop to under 10 FPS
it was hidden?
I got a 3070, great
nope just a club
oh oke
obv but
same

i forgot the term for a laptop condition its similar to bottleneck but for temperate
Thermal throttling
yes that one thxx
The 4080 12GB 4070 Ti is coming out very soon. lol
4090 Ti gonna be a fire starter lol

not sure if this is the right place but anyone got full pics of the new eagle union mass-produced ships?
i mean same, im never really gonna sacrifice framerates for res.
i can live with a 3060, but i want a 3080 lol
any 3k nvidia will run 1080p more than fine
nvidia drivers suck though
yea basically, avid amd fan here after they shored up their gpus and support
owner of xfx's merc 319 6800 xt and i can't find a game that saturates this thing unless i throw in ultra settings on a 1440p 32:9 monitor
stable on linux too
still experimenting with UV settings tho, managed to get this down like 80mV so far without it crashing on me with half the power draw and same perf
would've settled at that if not for the fact that's not a nice round 100mV number but maybe i'll have to... idk
interested in taking up CAD at university, not sure if it's a great idea, but the idea of designing parts simply sounds cool to me, what does it take overall to master
If you're truly passionate about it and want to get a job in that area then yeah, take up that university course
If it's just a hobby to you, like it is with me then you could just use online resources or maybe a local trade course
Personally I only did CAD in highschool and the rest I learned through online resources in my spare time
3d printing is a good hobby to start with
now i wish the highschools around here offered something like that, sadly our education system is not that great
Ah
duly noted
Unlucky
Our highschool had just opened a huge trade training centre so I was pretty spoiled for choice
also it's less a course and moreso masters' specialisation
the other is ML or something like that
i'll have to attend the upcoming lecture to know better
I got my engineering qualifications and avionics certs from highschool
considering i haven't seen money for an eternity or something i'm not sure on staying another 3 semesters at uni learning CAD vs just going straight for a SWE job
It's up to you dude
in the end yeah
How long have you been at university for?
and the problem is CAD sounds interesting but i'm not sure if i can endure three more semesters vs going straight to work
and when i go to work, i likely won't want to ever go back for that master's
not really, everyone in Warsaw is looking for full-timers + pretty bad perspectives here
Not even like McDonald's or something? Just to keep the lights on in your home
i already sent a bunch of apps
i am literally unfit for fast food, been there done that, the smell of grease just imprints on my health at this point
been for a bit and it's just not for me
A lot of people I know who went through uni got part time jobs at the supermarket
it's kind of an uphill battle as a result
It's a bit less shit than fast food
AMD drivers then are aids
the good ol' "here's the source code, please fix them for us"
at least it's better than not having the source code and them perma shitting up my linux installs
He's got a point there
i don't disagree
but like, source available is better than no source
maybe 10 years ago
On Windows Nvidia shits all over AMD
now installing either of them is as simple as doing an apt install
But my Linux experience was way better back when I had an AMD card
anyway anything retail only has open positions for the cash register and companies here loooove to rip you off in reports
source code != good
for that
and btw the nvidia source code is open now too
That's whack
had a warehouse position parttime and it was good but also hardly an option now
it shitting up ur linux install is more of your own mistakes than the fault of a driver
like how on gentoo installing steam from the app store nukes the entire WM from ur system
so yea, that basically boils down to stay 3 sems at uni to learn more cad and maybe snatch a connection or two, or go straight to work
I run a warehouse for my main job right now and it's pretty alright.
Gonna move to the city and take on a CNC apprenticeship soon tho
in some dev job
bcz someone wrote a shit recipe for that install and nobody bothers to, you know, READ the god damn install warnings
don't disagree that sharing shit doesn't make it shit but that's kinda irrelevant when they were and still are legit better in my experience, im mostly on laptops tho
The problem I'm facing is that my second job really needs me rn and I can get a transfer to one of their city units but who knows if they'll accept it
They need me in the country and want to keep me here
your experience is the exception nowadays
i don't even get cross city relocation packages, let alone cross country
I had someone run into ryzen issues instead bcz their ubuntu version didn't have the right headers and bindings attached to the kernel to support it
idk maybe poland is just backwards nowadays
but the nvidia GPU worked like a charm with the integrated radeon driver
and i need to look for jobs abroad
I should elaborate I don't mean going across countries lol.
I mean going from a country town to the city
the biggest mistake people on laptops make when installing and configuring dual GPU setups (integrated and dedicated) is that they don't pay attention to what kind of multiplexing they have and what settings need to be tweaked for their specific setup
which usually results in the install not booting or a absolutely abysmal image resolution or no image on the built in display
I've heard similar things regarding Poland
A lot of devs there go to Germany or the Czech Republic yeah?
not too knowledgeable on the specifics, but seniors certainly don't stay here
also i don't use dual gpu laptops
5 2500u
Holy based
it's old at this point but that arch install had less issues than any other system i've had
ok then why arch
it's just enough tinkering for me while still being usable for a daily
before you answer, it's cool is not a valid reason
it was the system at my uni at the time and i needed to learn it
today i probably would go for something else to save time manually configuring stuff
what kind of lunatic puts fucking arch in a uni lab deployment
It's both fun and practical, like a manual car from the early 2000's; sure it's not the most practical or the most fun but it balances the two nicely and has a shitload of support
so let me get this straight
you tell me, the guy seriously sounds super passionate about linux to the point of reciting history from memory
you installed it but you would rip ur hair out if you didn't have internet or the wiki to consult
probably, yeah
then arch is not for you
For professional use I definitely wouldn't use Arch but on my personal machine I wouldn't have it any other way
or if u need the system for anything but inflating ur e-peen
this comes from a ex linux contributor that used arch as the test best for development kernels
I think you've known me for over a year and you only just found out I use Arch, I don't think e-peen bragging was an issue here lol
arch is just not practical for proper use
and comes with a lot of hidden gotchas and caveats
things that 99.9% of ppl installing it do not pay attention to
similar to how I see ppl installing kali linux bcz "I need dem hackerman tools maaaan"
ok but that is actually a stupid reason to install kali
when u can literally install anything from that toolset on literally any other linux distro
this is why most linux daily driver users do not run shit like arch, manjaro, gentoo and other pretentious shit like that
bcz it's too much hassle and work and maintenance just for what? bragging rights?
i mean i said it after stating my reason
lol
but if it's already there might as well stick to it until i move to my pc
if u rlly want and need linux there is no shame in running RHEL, ubuntu, mint, debian, popOS, etc
that's if again you have a decent idea on what ur doing in there
if not, as my friend would say, don't shit urself standing and go back to windows
bcz for better or for worse, windows is very convenient and intuitive
it takes a lot of time to learn linux and stuff
And then there's me, who was pretty much forced to learn how to use Linux in a matter of hours, thanks to the CS dept at uni running ALL their shit on Linux
Were we warned about any of this? No
Just "Here's a convoluted list of steps you need to follow to set up your lab environment in Linux, glhf"
i use arch btw
Been using Artix since it came out. Before that, bounced around through a lot of the Debian-derived set, Arch, Manjaro, and a good chunk of RPM distros. Haven't messed around with anything Slack or Gentoo related. May get bored and VM something like that.
die
those people are fucking lunatics
I'd get it if it was for smth like a linux or bash class
I thought you guys might be interested in this
I made a headphone stand that integrates into my PC case
It's cool, not going to lie
the entire thing is 3d printed
aside from one steel wire
my next step is making a cup holder that clips onto it
well it makes sense to run shit on linux
that is a clean design
the door handle still works btw
you just yank on the bar lol
I made sure it was strong enough in all directions to be used as a door handle
even microsoft runs linux
linux isn't the be all and end all of operating systems
and if you just know of windows and linux then I'm sorry
there is more specialized OSes like BSD, FreeRTOS
that are made for specific purposes where linux would fall behind hard
I haven't tried FreeRTOS before but you can miss me with BSD lol
it's not for your daily computer
my main storage array runs BSD
because linux really fucks around with NVMe when ur reaching speeds that rival RAM
oh yeah I forgot to update about my personal storage arrangement
I didn't end up going with the Kioxia drives
I bought two PM9A1 8TB drives
they cost more but have more than double the random performance
I rarely need random perf since the SSDs are L3 ARC
interesting
these SSDs are for my bulk storage, including my Hydrus folder so random performance matters a lot
it's RAM > Optane > NVMe SSD array > HDD array
I skipped the Optane step and just use a 16GB RAM disk for cache
right now I have RAM > SATA SSD array > HDD array
I have a 905P optane drive as the L2 storage
but I will be eliminating the HDD part soon
so if you want some ridiculously cheap 8TB HDDs let me know
I do not have the dough to upgrade to a 1 PB+ all SSD storage solution
you can get grey market new drives
they just cost more
find the right sellers and you can get 3 years warranty
why grey market when I can literally get them in bulk from the manufacturer
I could do that but it cost a lot more
if it were HDDs then sure
but SSDs are expensive
I'm starting with 16TB of NVMe storage and if they turn out well I'll buy more
so far so good
just make sure to keep them redundant
yeah
the beauty of replacing HDDs with SSDs is the fact that you still have those HDDs as a cold backup
Been a while since I messed with BSD. Didn't dislike it, tho.

I wonder if the tannins will eventually mess up the containment.
Interesting idea, tho.
Before that it would be some of the tea settling on the fins
some powder would settle out of the solution into the fins what with the surface area of those tiny fins on the water block
if it's a tea cooled Pc then shame on him
if it's a Tea boiling Pc then that would be nice

TLDR: Vapor Chamber design is fucked in a way that whenever you mount it horizontally, it fucks up and the vapor chamber doesn't cool at all
curious to know, how does it work in smartphones?
there is some sort of vapour _______________________________________ in flagships
most budget to midrange smartphones just use a thermal pad that dissipates the heat towards the screen and the back cover
ah
so i confused it
but damn AMD messed that up lol
it’s a good concept that won’t work in gpus
vapor chambers have been used a lot in GPUs and laptops
yeah but this implementation by AMD is kind of gimped
normally they’re really thin, right?
normally yeah
AMD THICKENED it and it doesn’t work anymore
we don't know yet what's the issue with the vapour chamber
oh i just thought that the liquid didn’t receive the heat and it couldn’t cool
cuz if it’s vapour then it’ll turn into a liquid right?
what I read in r/hardware was it might be dry out
vapour particles fly out of the chamber 😭
where the vapor chamber becomes too hot that the liquid inside doesn't condense back to liquid and thus doesn't actually cool the gpu anymore
vapor chamber technology is kind of a relative to the venerable heat pipes
Vapor chambers allow us to achieve better performance in high heat flux applications, which basically lets us take a very hot, very small surface (top of a CPU anyone?) and spread that heat out so it can be dissipated more effectively!
Sponsor message: Cooler Master has some cooler that feature vapor chambers and some great reading material if ...
thanks
Somehow I feel like saying "We get it, you vape" for that
Watched my little cousins tell my older cousin that the watercooling was leaking in her PC
She woke up, ran to the computer, opened the side panel, realized it's air cooled.
how
I had a reservoir blunder that caused my SSDs to be drenched in coolant lol
no damage but it was still a pain to clean up
I have a 5800x CPU, 60Hz 3440*1440p Monitor and a 750W PSU
What is the best GPU you guys would recommend to use with that?
A local supplier has a Rx6750XT for 480€, would that be a fitting card?
There is also a second Monitor in Full HD, but its only used for displaying things on my desktop like Discord or Youtube
any card will work
it’s up to what you’re planning to do with it
750w-300w (spikes and cpu and etc) = 450 to work with
I'm looking to purchase a new PC so I can run games and programs better
not sure how good these specs are since im not a huge PC guy
but if anyone has any reccomendations of what would be a decent upgrade from this PC i'm open to hear
Oh wow, I've had the same CPU since 2012, until it decided to kick the bucket

Another guess at the 7900XTX debacle: Might be too little liquid for the size of the vapor chamber
locking USB connectors exist!?!?!
I mean why though?
Why do we need something like that for a USB cord, let alone a USB C?

is this like a playstation or smth>
Where in the mainboard is the ps2 hardware
I assume that chip without any label on the right is the cell processor
yes that's the CELL processor
the RSX is the GPU
and the left is all the PS2
with the EE and GS all put under one chip on the bottom left
Huh. A time when the consoles didn't have SOCs
do you have a pic of the PS4 internals?
ps4 cooling bad
my slim overheats even though it’s dust free
My Slim didn't had any issues really
Now my PS5 on the other hand, collecting dust
interesting way to get a PS2 game running on a PS3
interesting and cheap i guess
Later models had software emulation (Slim and Super Slim don't have hardware based emulation for PS2 like the launch model) and it's very hit or miss for PS2 titles
https://youtu.be/eM8wHtk0eDE
This video might help understand it better but yeah, launch US model CECHA01 is the best one for PS2 emulation on PS3
it overheats but it’s quiet, so i’m all good
it looks garbage tho, since it’s playing 1080p on 4k
You still have games to play. As mentioned, my PS5 is collecting dust since I bought an Xbox. Mediocre "muh exclusives" don't tickle my fancy in Sony's department that much
Sad, since the PS5 has more VRAM than the Xbox series X
We all know that Nvidia named the 4080 12Gb wrongly, but you know what else they did wrong? they first claimed that the 4080 12Gb is 3x faster than the 3080 Ti. Then after they named the 4080 12Gb correctly and called it The 4070 Ti, they claimed this "brand new" card is 3x faster than the 3090 Ti. These claims are enormous and I'm pretty sure ...
it seems like the ps5 is rejected so often, and the xbox is more accepted
as in the xbox is getting played more and such
i haven’t touched the ps4 in a month, only my dad does
More VRAM won't really make mediocre "exclusives" any better though
Well, Microsoft just does it better now imo. Sure they did almost kill the brand with Xbox One's DRM policy back in the day, but with Phil Spencer on board, he's pretty much doing everything to get the brand on track.
Game Pass still being better than Sony's "copy the homework (Game Pass) but make sure no one notices" job with PS Plus.
Multiplatform titles being cheaper, "exclusives" going on Game Pass day 1 like Forza etc.
And of course, backwards compatibility
And hell, I can run emulators on my Xbox, and it doesn't even require Dev Mode any more. PS2 titles upscaled running very good and all
The biggest draw of the PS over the Xbox are the exclusives, which there are like jack shit now compared to when the PS3 and PS4 launched
Oh I agree definitely
Wait emulators now work without dev mode? Huh
I almost pulled the trigger on pre-ordering Gran Turismo 7, only for the whole microtransaction bs to happen and was like: Nah, not until it drops to like $10
Yeah, works without Dev mode, and haven't had my account nuked lol
They could release a new Killzone game for the PS5
Eh, Killzone has been dead for years, doubt many would care about it at this point. Or Resistance
The one game that would have made me buy a PS would have been Ace Combat, but they made it multiplatform so I have no reason to buy a PS
How possible is this lol
speaking of connectors, I'm in the process of adding a SCART port to my CRT TV.
still don't know why such a high quality connector was never available in the USA at the time
the studio working on it moved to horizon
Oyo?
So I'm going traveling any I kinda want something portable. Should I get a gaming laptop lol
Gaming laptops are power drains and usually function as a portable space heater also
I mean you could, but laptops tend to age badly
definitely do
but it doesn't hurt to own a laptop
as per entertainment, you can always take a few books with you
rhythm games are also p fun to play on mobile
entry level to mid tier laptops are fine
unless you travel or move a lot? at that point, make a desktop setup that uses your laptop as the source
and! xbox game pass can be used on windows, which is so much better than ps plus

ironic that you wrote Perth with psychadelics and party music since i also used to live on the gold coast (hell)
I've never met someone from Perth who doesn't have long hair and do psychedelics and party every weekend
yeah not an uncommon demographic
my town is all meth if that makes you feel better
long hair doesnt suit me well and i dont do drugs but i love a party
tbh name an australian city that doesnt have shittons of meth
good point
I'm in a trucking hub about 5 hours inland from Adelaide, so we're ultra meth
Port Augusta?
actually i think thats coastal
but when i went through there was a lot of trucks and a lot of drugs
didnt stay long
lmao no we're not that bad
yeah fair
Honestly, going to have to disagree nowadays
no they still are massive power drains
a ultrabook can go for 12 hours or more without a charge
a gaming laptop can do at most 2-3 hours
a gaming laptop with optimus tech can last at most 5-6 hrs if you are just doing standard non gaming things. otherwise yeah just get an ultrabook for ultra long battery life
even with optimus tech, those beffier high end components just simply draw more power

Dave's Garage...
tbf i always play with it on charge. i just need something that can run some normal shit while i travel... at most Genshin lol
*while gaming
People seem to forget that when you are not gaming on a powerful laptop, a good laptop will switch to its iGPU and reduce power targets on top of the fact that the workload change itself will extend battery life through not being continuous
Gaming laptops being huge with battery that lasts a maximum of 2h outside of gaming is years gone
Especially with the fact that while power draw is typically going up and up for CPUs and GPUs, they're still getting improvements in power efficiency
what are you on about, most dGPU equipped laptops have massive power hogs as their CPU and RAM is also much beefier which again results in even higher consumption
RAM still uses neglible amounts, and you seem to have not read anything else but that. Why is your CPU going to be hogging power when you're not loading it with much?
CPUs are also becoming ever the more power efficient nowadays, and in recent years have taken leaps
because it's a different power target and efficiency compared to processors used in ultrabooks
Which mainly applies when under load. When idle or lightly loaded, a stronger CPU isn't going to say "welp may as well run at 100%"
no even under idle
A CPU doesn't have to run at either 0 or 100%
If a CPU has equal or better performance/watt, and you're doing light loads, it's not suddenly going to suck up 2-3x more power than a chip which simply has a lower maximum
You should reacquaint yourself with laptops as a whole before dismissing gaming laptops with the excuse of age-old problems
you should check out laptops again, even the ones at CES today may claim 8 hours of autonomy when in reality it's 3-4 hours
You know saying the same thing back doesn't work, right
Though, how about not misleading people to the nature of more powerful laptops
also laptops very often have much power thermal envelopes than any compact desktop has
To answer the original question directly, if you want the power, then purchase it, and if not, don't. It's more of a case of shitty laptops Vs good laptops, not normal laptops Vs gaming laptops
you're the one misleading people with magic and fairies magically making gaming laptops suddenly have the autonomy of ultrabooks
gaming laptops are due to the nature of the hardware more power hungry even when using basic shit
if u rlly want to game on the go or move often then the steam deck is a good option
Because that 144+hz monitor is using a shit ton more power than a normal screen
It's not really, plus if you find that a problem, you can reduce it with like four clicks
and even when the DGPU is shut down, it still uses a bit of power
No it doesn't
yes it does
It does. I have used a gaming laptop and I know for a fact that it still uses a bit of power
it might be like 3-5w, but that adds up over hours
also CPUs also have a minimum power usage as well
But what if I said the contrary. It doesn't. It sits utterly idle until put in play again
More powerful CPUs physically can't idle as low as the CPUs on ultrabooks
and no you can't cram a bigger battery to match the increased power usage, airlines allow integrated batteries up to a specific capacity
In that case it's just who's word you want to take for it
And a Steamdeck is a very good option for portable gaming, however it's limited in it's other usages
99Wh is the maximum
Which most actually don't border on
ye
So yes, technically various laptops could just cram in a larger battery
100Wh is the limit where different regulations apply
But we don't build laptops, we purchase what's already made for us. If I could put a 99wh in every laptop I've owned, I would've
and no idling of mobile CPU varies greatly from model to model
because surprise surprise you can tweak that power target curve
It really doesn't vary that much per model to model and moreso varies generation to generation
the only laptop I know that I can trust to be efficient when just doing normal shit is the Asus Zephyrus G14
Then again, that laptop starts at like what 2500 usd
Because the G14 is a good laptop
And no it doesn't start at nearly 2500
It's like half that
If not less than half if you opt for the 2020
TL;DR gaming laptops do not have long battery life simply because that's not their main point is
*TL;DR it's a case of a good laptop Vs a bad laptop, not explicitly a non-gaming laptop Vs a gaming laptop
it really depends on the model. Some models are terrible at power management when going for normal non-gaming shit
a gaming laptop is made for that, gaming, while having a power source at a short notice
A "gaming" laptop is a laptop with power when a user may want it, primarily when sat in one location
while ultrabooks are basically low power portable workstations that allow you to be on the go while also doing ur work that doesn't require a lot of processing power
*Which a good gaming laptop can also fulfil, even if sometimes not nearly to the same degree
There is no giant bridge between them that you're trying to create
it's not the design core of a gaming laptop
And?
there is
also one thing why you are better off not using a gaming laptop for day to day use: They're freaking heavier than an ultrabook
ur basically comparing 4 hours of autonomy with 12 hours
Just because it's not explicitly designed and marketed for it, it's now horrifically bad and unusable for such?
They're not that heavy IMO, but again, depends on specific laptop
If you have to lug around something a lot and pack it up every now and then, definitely go ultrabook
yeah carrying a 5kg laptop with 1kg of power bricks is very portable
nah even the lightest gaming laptops are a tad bit heavier than many ultrabook
also yeah portability and autonomy goes out the window because of the fucking power bricks
Naturally. I'd say that's largely down to preference though
the most annoying piece of shit that gaming laptops carry
while a ultrabook can be under 1kg with the power brick
Until you get the awful huge gaming laptops like what Alienware still pump out
I think the largest gaming laptops are the one from boutique shops like Origin
the Clevo designs
At which point they're not laptops, they're just the same as an ITX system with a convenient display thrown on
now those, you barely can get an hour off the wall
Laptop talk just reminds me of my need for a new laptop which I'm indefinitely trying to put off
Yeah these fuckers
I've never seen them before, but first impressions from that image alone are not great to say the least
I stand by that 2160p options on laptops are dumb as fuck
LTT reviewed these type of laptops and let's just say that they barely lasted a bit more than 1hr off the wall even when doing normal tasks
You'll get 4K OLEDs and your battery will like it
What
Holy shit
The new non-x Ryzen 7000 is good
Now if only motherboards aren't expensive as fuck
I'm waiting for the 3D variants, because I'm preparing for some silly numbers
i had this thin gaming laptop that’d last 2-3 hours off the wall lmfao
its normal tho
Mine usually last that long too but, yeah it goes 6 hours on netflix sometimes
so that could be why
im on 165hz 1600p
my MSI curved gaming monitor goes up to 165hz @1080p, but it doesn't have HDR (even though it's not that necessary).
I haven't had any good HDR experiences on my PC yet
Enabling it on Windows just washes out all the colours and makes everything look pale
Though I hear that's normal on the desktop and you're supposed to just toggle it whenever you want to watch HDR content
what's that
ROG laptop have 300hz and 360hz screen and aparently its a gimmic. because the motion blur was bad

Because a proper HDR display is few and far between
Windows 11 but it's basically the same thing
Idk man, native hdr on w11 looks amazing
I have a proper HDR display and have tried enabling it through the osd
Auto hdr is a god send too
it looks like actual deep fried aids on my PC lmao
Then there's definitely smth wrong
"Proper HDR display"
What's it's certification? How many lighting zones?
I've posted my results on forums and people said it was normal behaviour for Windows when not viewing actual HDR content
I've never had that honestly
It is, however, you're also more likely than not to have a shit experience with HDR content and HDR enabled also
Unless you do actually have a "proper" HDR display, and it's not just something with HDR on the box which accepts a HDR signal
I don't even have a "proper" one
it's nothing special, like the bare minimum for HDR lmao
HDR400 with global dimming
Just displayhdr400
So it's not really HDR then
HDR400 is still considered HDR
Not really
even though it's the bare minimum
The only time my display goes deep fried is when the display drivers gets fucked
and trust me when you see the results you will know what I mean
it's a lot worse than it should be
HDR600 is the absolute bare minimum to really experience the benefits of HDR. Many lighting zones is essential to HDR, otherwise you can just forget about it. In actuality, you're going to need usually HDR1000+ certification and hundreds of lighting zones to experience true HDR
"HDR" is thrown around way too much and VESA should definitely give it tighter requirement's
In most cases, mainly with HDR10+, it can look worse, but HDR400+ can often be passable
I need a new monitor TBH
This is mine with hdr on, I don't ever turn it off
it's hard to convey with a photo but I took both of these with my phone in manual mode and using the same settings
it mostly looks like this in real life too
It is next to impossible to convey with a photo, so there is no point
which is on??
The bottom just looks like AWFUL calibration, not SDR
bottom one is on
Oh I see
that's literally the best calibration I could do lmao
Yeah that is yikes
it looked even worse before
u need this
I thought top was HDR, bottom was SDR xd
no level of calibration has been able to fix it lol
what is your display even, have you gotten your display color profile?
u need this shit, but for your exact model
I've got one of those curved 49" meme monitors and while they're cool and all, they're not known for their amazing colours
I've got the AOC one
AOC are indeed known for being cheap
it uses the same panel as the first gen Samsung 49" monitor
which is why I bought it
the difference is in the guts and frame
it's listed in their promo material
then again monitor promo material reads like comedy fan-fiction
there are brands that get their shit certified for a "first batch" then subsequently stop, but retain the marketing material
im assuming this is yours?
I think mine's just the CX, not the CX2
I got it years ago
Overall I actually quite like AOC, they're like the TCL of monitors; cheap but punching well above their weight class
I'd say you get what you pay for, more like
i cant find the icm file for it so
what does your monitor say here?
oh wait I have a completely different model lmao
like I said it's been years and I didn't bother to follow it up
ye, if your drivers were installed, and the monitor is certified, the certification should show up
okay so yeah the UCX and UG7 are the same monitor
I'm guessing the end is a region code though I'm not sure
I install TVs and the end of their models tend to be region codes

googled the model number
all i found were reddit threads complaining about issues
you'll find that with all the 49" ultrawides
these things are nothing but trouble for the user
that is true
the og G9 had so much teething issues

the new 8k g9 tho
you bet ur ass nvidia is gonna release a 4090ti with dp2.0 lmfao, so that anyone who buys the 8k g9 will also buy a 4090ti LMAO
I'm currently trying to decide what to do with my monitor situation
Issue: fullscreen content blocks my Teamspeak, Discord, etc and game compatibility is ass
I have two solutions but am not sure what to employ
either I buy a second 16:9/21:9 display for games
or I ditch the whole thing and replace it with a LG C2
wym blocks?
well at the end of the day it's just a single display, so if I fullscreen something it blocks everything else
no lol
I used to have a PLP setup and I really miss being able to see my Teamspeak while playing games
or watch a video off to the side
my current solution is to just play games in windowed mode, which of course the LG C2 would have to do too, but it would be a lot less janky there
cant relate, i only play in full screen
alright I've updated the drivers and ran a new calibration
results still look awful
colours are extremely washed out and there's artefacts near every edge
it looks like jpeg compression lol
My "HDR" just turns saturation to infinity
Somehow, my internet connection in my laptop is soo damn fuckin slow its frustrating. Even tho its quite decently good on other device like my phone. Anyone know why?
Maybe something to do with my laptop's adapter?
It also always disconnects and connects the moment later....quite frustrating i'd sa
Could be, I'd suggest updating the network driver, depending on the make of the laptop that is
Can you guys name me something that is not a ROG 6 and has on bezel camera
I don't care what brand it is, as long as they are both new and using pop ups or on bezel cameras, I am fine with it
Just not the apples... Too expensive IMO
on bezel camera
huhhhh
apple is not rly techy for u
No, for me, for the phone in that price... Apples too less offering for me
On Bezel Camera as in this for example...
Apple? Force me all you want but I will never buy them
ik
LG V60 ThinQ 5G | LG Canada
something like this?
Someone state that... Why buy ROG 6? when ROG 6 is the only newest on bezel phone
Lemme check
ok
Nope... It is a notch
And... I don't want that...
ooh
i thought u wanted a notch
mu bad
ok, so something that's flat
with no poky pooky thing
This is the example of On Bezel Camera
the camera is on that bezel, and for me, I want such like that or a pop up
It's fine bro
I mean... Apple might have something good inside...
I have done some research
under screen will get u a zte
Huawei Mate X or something... with that book like screen...
ROG Phone
are the last ones that I could buy after switching from Vivo V15 of mine
At one time, I would tolerate this
see, you could name 2 after research
Notch/Punch holes? No...
i’m fine with mitch
But I ask if I could find more
not the dot thing
it’s so weird lmfao
Very weird IMO
it's not weird at all
ppl like thin bezels
trends are trends and manufacturers will follow them
and camera in bezel is making is thicker
less screen for no reason
also most of the time that top portion is already occupied by shit like battery indicator, notification icons and such
not much use for it
yeyeyeye
but if it doesn’t sway u, you can try to get an old phone
then custom rom it
Hmmm... Custom ROM...
ugh... Okay...
But if I had a money... Man... I would make one for myself...
Would make one specific type of phone
i like this take of a folding phone more than an actual folding phone. Too bad the dual screen quality is pretty shit, and expensive, and hard to find now. lol
iirc it also had other issues

Like the charging lol
bruhhh
honestly i would have gotten one, price for it wasnt too bad
Or the LG Wing.
Fold is nice but too pricy and I just don't have enough confidence in the folding glass.
iirc
yes
Red Magic 7S Pro, or the entire lineup, has underscreen camera, good specs, and doesn't break easily like the ROG 6
Or you know... the 8 is coming...
i still like oneplus
I don't lol
the 11 looks unsettling
Not after the 7 series.
i have the 8t and it’s great
8 and onwards it's like
flat screen supremacy
Eh.
flat is best
I still have my 6T McLaren
Honestly if you were ever considering a ROG6, I recommend a Red Magic 7, or 8 when it's out.
it’s just flagship phone
i was considering the huawei p40 pro plus
i got the 8t
was perfect t
and then oxygenOS12 came out and i shitted myself
it’s horrible
idk wtf u guys want from a foldable
Fold 4 right? That thing dropped massively in price where I live lol
my Z fold is a nice balance between a phone and a tablet with best of both worlds, doe it does take some getting used to
Yea that's the problem with OnePlus. It's trying to use Color OS and nothing's really interesting, other than the charging
I got used to in a day
I want a dual screen for productivity
Thing went (12GB 256GB model) from $1975 to $1150 (USD) in the span of uhh, think it was 7 months
I use mine usually in split either horizontally or vertically
sometimes even in multi window
Yeah, heard they've kind of screwed the pooch with OP switching to ColorOS suddenly
Haven't tested it too much, considering I've upgraded my OP 8 Pro to ColorOS 12 and sold it immediately after lol
ah
coloros12 is shit
13 too
no difference
so i’ve only used the oneplus 8t for dji now

AMD’s Ryzen 7000 series cranked up the power draw, but had performance to match. Now that the non-X chips are out with limited power draw, did AMD accidentally play themselves – And you?
Discuss on the forum: https://...
If they got rid of the dumb aesthetic and some ancient design choices, I think they'd be much better received
yes
Honestly the 7600 and 7900 isn't bad
If the X variants didn't already drop in price
And if the motherboards werent expensive
And required DDR5 memory
ok for $100 I'd rather get the non-X
COME ON YOU LITTLE BASTARD, GET CHEAPER.
I'll wait for team blue
i already have a 3600
don't feel like changing motherboard and ram. i just feel like getting the last AM4 processor for like the next 3 years
I got plenty of those but I still mostly use the 1080 Ti since it can handle p much any game I throw at it still
ok im gonna bottleneck if i get a 3080, guess im getting a 3060 lol
doe for stuff like FS2020 and such I do have to swap to the 4090
it's fine but im starting to notice its limits
It's funny cause 1060 is 2nd most used GPU lol
Falling below 1650 now.
CPU is 6 core
System RAM is 16 GB
At 2.3 to 2.7 Ghz
my CPU rn is clocked in at 5.4GHz
i don't touch overclock stuff lol
then again my TDP is 65W on a stock cooler 4.2 base
well this is how u essentially keep a 5 year old CPU competing with modern ones
I have an AIO on mine
My 6800K is coughing up its last with some games
Can't squeeze more out of it due to poor silicon
And I don't want to push more than 1.4v through it
the cheapest "decent" motherboard for B650 is 289 usd
Yeah the motherboards are the expensive as fuck for AM5
Also having to buy DDR5 RAM right now lol
the budget AM5 mobos are apparently releasing later this year
ddr5 is cheaper now than before tho
still slightly more than ddr4 but ddr5 is getting to the point where it's worth it
it's just those dang motherboards
Yea they stopped scalping them lol
It's not like Intel where they have DDR4 boards.
happy Steve

ok
ancient design choices? you mean ROG should have punch hole cameras?
that's basically... Eliminates the main reason why would I buy ROG Phone tbh
Thanks Steve
Yes, or under-screen
Unless you're packing features that cannot be put in a hole-punch, there's no reason to have a notch
user experience for noobfed
