it doesn't make sense to go from a Leopard 2A7 to a K-2
two decades
and then make a tank appear out of thin air
there's a dramatically long procurement process
not arguing against continuing to develop tanks
poland just does it's own thing
aaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAA
god bless em
but like KF51 just doesn't seem that attractive a option unless its a massive jump for your current tank fleet
maybe, but it has a lot more room to grow than a 2a7
and if you don't have tanks
why not
if you don't have tanks then go for it
if you have current gen tanks
there's no point
speaking of which
the estonian goverment in the 90's missed out on buying leo 2a4's for like 100k a piece

"the terrain isn't suited for tanks here" they argued
oh what could have been
think my main example earlier
is how the K-2 made sense procurement wise since Korea was going from K-1s and M48s
and how a lot of the potential K-2 customers are going from older gen tanks
such as bog standard 2A4s in the case of Norway
or M60s/Leopard 1s for Turkey
well i think by the time those newer gen tanks reach production capability, those older systems are gonna need to be replaced anyway
idk new gen tanks need time to mature
and current gen tanks actually need to reach their limit
since the issue is for example if you want to save 10 tons on a abrams
all you really need to do is just develop a new turret for it
it's well over 20t with all the APS shit
we saw that earlier
even with trophy
its still only 67-68 tons
the british were reliably operating 75 ton tanks without transmission upgrades
isn't 85 short tons like 74t?
horse
it's very heavy
81.4 short tons is about 73.8 tonnes
that's a chonker
yeah
FP kits
God I hate tanks
they're loud
APS isn't the main weight adder
rough
its the fucking FP kits
and they get everywhere
that's because there's a clear best plane
F-111 yeah
I think once I tried defending the A-10 by saying it was a decent bomb truck but needed to be retired
Vark Vark vark
and got argued against
Deserved
rightfully
šļø I still shitted on it quite a bit in that argument
since the GAU-8 and the obsession with it was just dumb
Nuance is for losers fuck you tato
I don't really know why that argument is so die hard for both sides
I made the point repeatedly in that argument about how the GAU-8 was basically useless beyond morale purposes
Anyway single seater is
but defended the platform as a hole since it was a decent and affordable bomb truck
overall thing's days are over and it still needs to be phased out for more multiroles
but it did have its niche with good loiter times, affordable operating costs and good bomb loads
šļø regarding M1A2C thing would only be 67 tons with the APS
the main weight adder is the side ERA kits
and considering the side era kits are that heavy
a combat ready next gen MBT is relatively still gonna be in the same weight class with addon armor added
sounds like a newer tank with integrated features and APS could save you 10-15t there
I mean a 59 ton tank with the FP kits would still be a 66 ton tank when combat ready
you aren't shaving down the weight of the FP kits regardless
i'll say it one more time:
the newer gen tanks that are currently being demo'd or in development have the same, if not better features than the current gen ones, weigh 10-20t less and have much more room to grow
do you get my point
for comparable features i think it's entirely possible
to maintain same protection levels no
if they end up weighing the same they'll just have more features
most possible would be 10
unless that 4th crewmember was really heavy
might be a concern in the US
I mean a new turret certainly can shave off a decent amount of weight
but I think regardless if your gonna bring up the combat weight argument especially with the up armor kits
you're still gonna end up with a 62-66 ton tank
then it'll be a 66t tank with more features and stuff
than the current 66t tank
well >70t in some cases already
it would still relatively be in the same weight class regardless
6 tons isn't really much of a difference
a next gen tank is still gonna be about 64-66 tons if you throw on the up armor kits
M1A2C is only 70 tons when you throw on the uparmor kits
ok
alright
i can't be bothered with this debate anymore
we're saying the same things for the last 30 minutes
tanks bad, wheeled TDs good
uhh
idk something something Leclerc is clearly the superior platform, breakaway from KMW imperialism
yes
tanks for the last 2 hours
that then devolved into a discussion about max combat weights when you put the heaviest possible armor package on the tank
idk its cool and French
120 MM rifle musket balls
120mm gas shells
120 MM willy pete (only the Italians can utilize it due to ammo storage requirements)
the what
one person on their twitter did, kinda surprising they made a video for that
doesn't take a genius to know iowa would shit on qe if us bbs 30 years older can
I mean in the end we're talking about tanks that don't get blown up by 30mm on video, so I'm not sure what the point is besides to try to force some weird viewpoint to wank 'this tank that's wildly more capable than others and has its own support because even lighter, less capable and older ones bog down anyway, is marginally heavier, so it's bad'
my entire argument at the time was that the GAU-8 was overrated and didn't serve any purpose beyond morale
he just ended up talking about the history of the QE class
it was weird and unnecessary
I more meant the tank argument, though it seems the a10 definetly had more merit for those in the real big know then most thought
argument devolved from like
it's just like
every other of his videos
the iowa thing is just an "excuse" to post it on the channel
me noting that the next gen tanks coming out in the next few years are kinda pointless if you already have current gens
it's like
"here is the history and technical specs of these ships"
mf did one with the fucking dlands
"oh and yeah they would get mauled, the end"
yeah, some people maintain their vehicles and they're good units, which I know shocks some
such surprise

actually the QE vs Iowa vid isn't even the worst
there's a Deutschland vs Iowa video

that's what I mean, there was only one comment on the post and it was like 'I think warspite could take iowa' brainlet bait

We should apply that principle to aircraft

Hello,
I'm looking for warships designed by Nevesbu (B.V. Nederlandse Verenigde Scheepsbouw Bureaus). Specifically for surface vessels, though I don't want to discourage discussion around their submersibles.
So far I'm aware of a couple of designs:

The fuel contained methanol, which was causing some sailors to go blind, but this didn't deter them from imbibing the illicit rotgut.
To stop this practice, the Navy added Croton oil to the alcohol fuel, which would cause, among other painful symptoms, explosive diarrhea, often laced with blood from the intestines.
However - surprise surprise - this didn't stop the practice, as servicemen cut off from regular supplies of booze quickly became desperate and sought out spirited refreshment however they could get it - potential blindness and explosive diarrhea notwithstanding.```
What no booze does to a mf

(also clearly why the Mark 14 is a failure)
Dumb question: could we get a Japanese Worcester-esque Heavy Cruiser if the Tone-class were to be designed with less emphasis on reconaissance
(I.e. Retaining Mogami's aviation facility arrangement, and adding more gun considering that the Tone-class was built with less restrictions, and that they could quite add 1 more twin-turret forward of the bridge in the original design.)
Or just be reasonable and go for 4 x 3.
Good insight..
Basically the Circle 6 Type A CA though
Thanks, found my answer

Some American servicemen in the Services Club objected to MÄori soldiers also using the Club, and on 3 April 1943 began stopping MÄori soldiers from entering. Many New Zealand soldiers in the area, both white (PÄkehÄ) and MÄori, combined in opposition. The stand-off escalated when Americans took off their belts to attack those who wanted to let the MÄori in. Fights broke out and at one point at least a thousand servicemen, as well as several hundreds of civilians, were involved in the subsequent fracas, which was broken up by civil and military police. The major brawl lasted from 6 pm to 8 pm, with some brawls lasting for perhaps another two hours. Dozens of people were injured. The fighting spread to the ANA (Army, Navy and Air Force) Club in Willis Street and to Cuba Street. At the time, hotel bars closed at 6 pm, the six o'clock swill, and inebriated patrons were then ejected into the streets.

tfw you lose 1/4th of the Turkish population because your prime minister is a warmonger and an idiot
It was better that way I think. Helped collapse of Ottomans and put Turkey into a better path
Since it made most of civilians support Ataturk instead
And well. Soviet Union was the first Major country to recognize Turkey. And one of few who supplied them during their independence war
I'm not one to compare possible outcomes
but as the Ottoman empire was bound to collapse anyways, the extra people that died needlesly in the war would've rather survived instead of being thrown against the Russian army in -30°C weather with only summer uniforms

Pasha sought to use the war as a means to bring about a modern Turkey
but in doing this he put his country in a position where there wasn't only internal strife, but also combat with the entente
pasha is just Turkish for mister it's more accurate to call him Kemal or Attaturk
because thats his name
and he was also not in charge of really anything significant until 1918-19
ottoman high command especially enver pasha kept kemal out of positions where he could have much influence on anything at all, especially after Gallipoli
no, I'm talking about enver pasha
who used Goeben and Breslau to bomb Sebastopol to get the Ottoman empire into the war
then blaming all shortcomings of his army on the Armenians
and the rest is history
my bad
didn't know it was just a title
that being said
all in all Turkey was really lucky to have a leader like Ataturk after the war
regardless of his poor management of the Islamic population in Turkey
generally its more the fault of the Germans that dragged the Ottomans into the war
by the time Enver was sending his ships to bombard the Black Sea
war was inevitable
eh no no
Enver wanted the war
which side was determined mostly by the ship debacle
Britain seizing Agincourt and Erin
then Germany "gifting" Goeben and Breslau
the German advisors to the Ottomans had closed the Dardanelles to all shipping after Breslau and Goeben entered the straits, mined the whole thing and cut off trade entirely without the knowledge or permission of the Ottoman government
The Ottomans mined the Dardanelles right when the war commenced I'm pretty sure
it was this act primarily which directly led to the Ottomans declaring war on the Entente. The ships debacle was certainly one thing but the Ottomans had not yet entirely dedicated themselves to the German cause and would not do so until the closure of the Dardanelles
they did so before the war started
the American ambassador visited Enver and it was the first Enver had actually heard of the closure of the straits, and he broke into tears
the ship debacle was mostly an issue to the ottoman people
so the government kinda had their hands tied
Enver was certainly pro-German before the war yes
A short time later, in Constantinople, the American Ambassador, Henry Morgenthau, requests and is granted an audience with the Grand Vizier ā who leaves a Turkish Cabinet meeting at his call ā only to find him a shaking wreck, barely able to get a sentence out, so terrified is he of the whole situation and what is now likely to occur.
Morgenthauās words do not soothe him. āYou know this means war,ā says the Ambassador.
The Grand Vizier does not faint outright, but it is likely a close-run thing.
Shortly afterwards, Cavid, the one-time financier from Salonica and now the Minister for Finance, emerges, and his first words to the American Ambassador would stay with the New York man ever after: āItās all a surprise to us ā¦ā
It is extraordinary! This most important strip of water in all of Turkey, the key to the defence of the nation, the thing most likely to bring them into the war, and the Cabinet hasnāt made the decision to close it!
āI certainly had a graphic picture,ā Morgenthau would record, āof the extremities to which Teutonic bullying had reduced the present rulers of the Turkish Empire. And at the same moment before my mind rose the figure of the Sultan, whose signature was essential to close legally these waters, quietly dozing at his palace, entirely oblivious of the whole transaction.'
New boat
this isn't like Belgian neutrality being violated pulling britain into the war
Enver willingly declared war
his conviction was certainly aided by the Kaiser
the decision to bombard the black sea was a consequence of the Germans closing the Dardanelles
whether it would have happened without the Germans closing the Dardanelles couldnt be known but everything happened so quickly
I'll quote a Russian observer of the Franco-Prussian war
"Even the ox destined for slaughter seems to know in advance in which cooking vessel it will end up."
Bombing of Sevastopol is always up to bias or blame
In some books. They say Ottomans didn't wanted it and crew was all German. So it was a rogue decision
In other books. Ottomans gave the order or know it would happen
Tho Enver was Pro-German
And believed Germany would win
ENver gave the order for the german crewed goeben and breslau to bomb sebastopol
this is the same Enver that ordered the disastrous Caucasian push I take it
and directly responsible for the Genocide

Lockheed Martin agreed to transfer two dozen F-35A technologies as part of a purchase deal. However, the US government blocked the transfer of four vital technologies:Ā AESA radar,Ā infrared search and trackĀ (IRST),Ā Electro-Optical Targeting PodĀ (EO TGP), andĀ RF JammerĀ technology. South Korea was thus required to develop these technologies domestically
Interesting. They don't trust South enough?
Selling an aircraft with the parts is different then a license order of said parts that are then no longer under direct US watch
its a competitor aircraft to US platforms
on top of the extra hassles and loops for export controls
its still heavily dependent on US technologies
it's probably because of frequencie overlaps, you don't wanna have all the same tech doing the same thing,. if korean tech get's hacked or re-engineered with american then it will also be a problem for the US, so in their eyes, it's best to make it domestic but
ĀÆ_(ć)_/ĀÆ
I wouldn't
say that exactly since the plane itself is subject to US export controls
the main issue is creating a competitor to American aircraft
along with potentially offering capabilities the United States doesn't wish to export to Indonesia and other potential customers for the platform

Have we ever discussed here how much airborne IFVs just suck as a idea? (I donāt care if the chats dead)
in particular the earlier BMDs are a bit less bad since they have bayonet strength somewhat equivalent to other IFVs
tho they still suffer from the issues of poor armored protection and questionable deployability
speaking of airborne vehicles, does providing paratroops with extra armored vehicles ever proved to increase their performance in being dropped behind enemy lines?
I know some vehicles like the Tetrarch were eventually repurposed to give paras a measure of independent tank support
What doctrine we're even talking about?
Ignoring that classic paradropping , in which such additional firepower might actually the most useful, being dead doctrine?
just in general, since I don't know much about para doctrines in the first place
like, universally does giving them vehicles actually helps their success rate or actually proved to be not that much of a help

Is there info on what speeds ships go in what situations? When is cruising, full, flank speed used?
That'd be hard to figure out. Ship speed is a tricky subject. Usually the only two metrics that are used are a cruisespeed with range and a top speed which I think all ships are supposed to be able to hold for at least 8 hours.
It vastly differs depending on the machinery setup of an individual ship
Trials are undertaken usually for a set time at a set speed however that isnāt really a showing of how long a ship can go at itās top speed of absolutely required
Flank speed and top speed especially can vary widely once a ship is in service
Things like wear on the turbines and boilers, saltwater contamination in the boilers/fuel, quality of fuel, marine growth on the ships hull, health/skill of the crew on coal powered ships and many more can cause losses in overall top speed
Then there's also sea and weather conditions.
Displacement of the ship also has an impact
Especially as over time ships tend to exceed their designed deep load displacement, which tends to result in greater draft than first envisioned by design
Ex, a 1° Serie Soldati-class destroyer can do 37-38 knots at normal load, but at deep load this was more like 35 knots (and later in their career, 33 knots). Similarly a 36-knot JKN was closer to 32 knots at deep load, or a 36-37.5 knot Benson was more like 32-33 knots.
The speed that the ship wants to go will usually be dependent on what you are trying to achieve, so finding some cookie cutter chart with speeds under given circumstances. Quick search through some documents only gave me one number, which is that German destroyers were to default to 9kn (low speed) when encountering thick fog (inability to make out flag or light signals beyond 600m)
But even that number was no absolute, if the commander deemed a higher speed to be necessary then he could overrule that
Some considerations to make when determining what speed works best for you:
- Am I pressured to get somewhere fast? (like German capital ships trying to break out into the Atlantic)
- How much fuel can I afford to burn?
- Do I wish for invisible smoke from my funnel? (beyond a certain point of forcing the funnel may start emitting thick black smoke)
- What is the state of my machinery and can I afford an additional strain?
- Does my ship experience vibrations at certain speeds, and if so, are those relevant to my objective?
- Does the weather force me to go above/below a certain speed?
- Do I need speed for additional maneuverability and for combat usage?
- Most of the questions above, but applied to your escorts
I can only speak for the German ships I could look into the war diaries of, very rarely outside of max speed trials. Most of the time they targeted a certain speed and just kept that, even during actual combat. Cases I can confirm or safely assume (trend being that it was only done when facing an emergency):
- ZG-3/Hermes had a few moments of full power, one when trying to prevent Porto Fino from committing suicide by British aircraft and one when she was busy dodging a few dozen dive bombers
- Scharnhorst during her final engagement (assumed, but highly likely as she was trying her utmost to get the fuck out of there)
- Gneisenau during the engagement with Glorious (hard to imagine her going 31+kn at combat load otherwise)
ye?

its not like it's the 300th hollywood garbage vomit about the wehrmacht
So I am confused I saw a thing talking about a US cannon in WWII called Little David and it said it was the largest gun of WWII
I thought Karl Gustav and its sister gun Dora were the largest of of 2nd world war
You mean Karl Gerat? It was 600mm mortar.
Schwerer Gustav was the 800mm gun
Little David was 914mm
Schwere sorry thought it was karl
I know the western front gun better Dora
Tho Little David is not the largest. It shares the title with British Mallet Mortar. Who is also 914mm. From 1857
But it's up to you if you find difference between guns and mortars
Since Gustav is a gun
So she is still largest gun ever in that way
yeah little david and the mallet mortar are larger caliber
but in terms of the actual size of the mounting and actual destructive range and power gustav is still going to handily beat them
Tfw Tsar Cannon is 890mm. So close
Still biggest cannon tho
Actually do I remember that wrong
She was 20 inch? But also had something about 890mm
Ok I have no idea why some sites call it 890mm while Wiki calls 20 inch
Ah. Internal diameter of 890mm
Ok so
Gustav is 800mm. And fires HE shells at 820m/s velocity
She fired 250 times during her testing. During siege of Sevastopol she fired 47 shells
Only then she worn out her barrel. So that's almost 300 shots per barrel life
Isn't that really good for that velocity and caliber?
Since even British 406mm/45 firing 1,080kg AP at 747m/s had around 350 shots
reminder that kelly's heroes had more accurate tigers than patton

I prefer M60 Tiger 1
Actually.. that's m48 isn't it
They just painted the cross on it and said job well done

depends
the main issue with airborne AFVs is that typically the compromises required greatly limit their capability and that almost every country that operates them lacks the real capability to employ them
the BMD in particular is a example of overinvestment in Russia's airborne forces despite the Russian Airforce only being able to deploy one VDV brigade at a time (with its entire cargo fleet dedicated to it)

Many gained land from their axis occupiers in World War 2. The Dutch did not. So why?

@spring briar Would you happen to know the final fate of the tanker Tarvisio? She was transferred to France after WWII as part of Italy's reparations, but I can't find any information on what France did with her.
Renamed to āGaronneā by the MN and removed from service in 1959
Hereās a picture in French service
It appears she had some guns fitted
Armement : 4 canons de 120 mm
2 canons de 76 mm
2 canons de 40 mm
8 canons de 20 mm

hell yeah

no one cares about strayaboos
