no idea, but I have had a past of mentally connecting things with less connecting more tenuous links than Isidore of Kiev (14th-15th century ... churchman) and AL!Kyiv

You don't call Leningrad class as Saint Petersburg class

Just because city has different name now

inb4 someone refers to it as 'Sankt Peterburg class'

Likely Tsar fans

Or Petrograd

Kinda weird in Opsiren it's Saint Petersburg. But world tour it's Petrograd

So not even Manjuu is sure about it's name

Kiev was historically designed as a follow-on to the Tashkent-class design when it became clear that Italian shipbuilding practices were incompatible with the comparatively inferior Soviet shipbuilding industry and practices. Kiev and her sisters were to be cheaper versions of Tashkent with virtually the same armament. All were canceled or scrapped by the time of the German invasion of the Soviet Union.

The Kiev class (Russian: Киев) (officially designated as Project 48) was designed in 1939 for the Soviet Navy as a smaller class of destroyer leaders after the cancellation of the Tashkent-class ships that had been intended to be built in the Soviet Union. The bombardment of Cherbourg took place on June 25, 1944, during World War II, when ships from the United States Navy and the British Royal Navy attacked German fortifications in and near the city, firing in support of U.S. Army units that were engaged in the Battle of Cherbourg. #

where did the "bad french steel" myth originate from?

chilly osprey
#

From which era?

spring briar
#

I think it pertains to the 30's?

desert agate
manic latch
chilly osprey
#

I usually see negative stuff expressed about French steel in the 20th century as either;

A) Lacking sufficiently high strength steel in the 1920s (because of lost time thanks to WWI) to build cruiser hulls as lightly as other navies, which cost them available tonnage for protection. This only got turned around at the end of the decade. Mainly pertains to 10,000-ton treaty cruisers. Though, worth noting there were a lot of issues with quality of steel used on destroyers built at private yards in the 1920s too, which corroded early or decks/platforms not installed with the resistance required by the MN.

B) Deck armor, mainly people trying to figure out how Massachusetts was able to penetrate Jean Bart's aft machinery deck at ranges below where she should have been able to do so (i.e. an assumption that the deck armor plate performed worse than it should have).

spring briar
#

I've read about the pitting issues on the fantasques

desert agate
chilly osprey
#

The former is pretty well substantiated by evidence, though this is not so much steel quality being poor than it is the metallurgy falling behind for a decade or so relative to other navies (could not produce as high strength plate, thus required thicker plating). The latter is, as far as I know, just guesswork?

tough quail
#

im pretty sure the latter is just a case of her swaying or listing in mass' direction

#

given just a couple degrees can change that massively

desert agate
spring briar
#

post-WW1 makes a lot of sense since you can't really afford to occupy all your major steel mills with making AAA grade steel when most of the infrastructure along your eastern border has been destroyed (thx germany <3)

tough quail
#

its okay germany's eastern infrastructure is going to take a mildly harder hit in the next round

manic latch
#

U.S. Navy Bureau of Ordnance in World War II says positive things

spring briar
#

whereas before that in the belle epoque france could just poor whatever money was needed to have the bestest steel

desert agate
manic latch
tough quail
#

cast armor tends to mostly revolve around tanks and in the late 30s the US is absolutely comically behind europe on that front

#

so its not too surprising

manic latch
chilly osprey
#

Also has to be said that, because people have this fixation on 'muh Krupp Stahl', they forget that France for the longest time was easily the most advanced steelmaking nation in Europe

manic latch
#

Krupp and Nippon fans destroyed

chilly osprey
#

Hence why they could get away with things like just using Mild Steel plates or Nickel-Steel plates at the same time the British were having to mess around with things like Compound Armor to get similar defensive capability from their armor

When conditions eased, Mahan enjoyed long hikes in the mountains near Kobe and he rhapsodized, “The country is more beautiful than anything in our own land. Just between Kobe and Osaka is one of the loveliest, if not the loveliest rural view I have ever seen.” Naval lore had it that the valley he “discovered” came to be known as “Mahan’s Valley” to subsequent naval visitors. “But I have never heard it has been so entered on the maps,” he wistfully recalled. In his memoirs, written some forty years later, he expressed concern that modernization would wipe out the charms of his favorite valley. “If the march of improvement has changed that valley, Japan deserves to be beaten in her next war.” Some reason for “beating” Japan!

its nicknamed the supersonic booze carrier but i dont remember its model

jovial elm
#

Extremely fast

#

Like, extremely fast

restive zealot
#

is that a us version?

desert agate
#

in the end the F-111 ended up as a vastly superior platform that could do everything the TSR-2 could do, but better, and more

restive zealot
#

oh no, thats raf

restive zealot
#

thats the key words "but it didnt"

desert agate
#

but it really did

restive zealot
#

btw, whats this thing for?

jovial elm
#

It was slower and it's avionics were far worse but I carried more

desert agate
#

10'000lb vs 31'500lb

restive zealot
desert agate
#

F-111s avionics were not inferior

jovial elm
restive zealot
#

its better to be a little slower but carry alot more

restive zealot
jovial elm
#

Look at the panavia tornado

desert agate
jovial elm
#

Carried far less than tsr 2

desert agate
#

yes

restive zealot
#

cool

jovial elm
#

The TSR was designed for desp penetration, which is a different role to the f111

desert agate
#

indeed the F-111 was vastly better suited to low altitude bombing and interception

restive zealot
#

sorry, i mostly know boats

desert agate
#

given that the TSR-2 was designed to use its high speed and low altitude for that deep penetration, its a little questionable how it was going to do it

#

given that the F-111 could fly lower

#

carry more bombs

#

and deliver them accurately on target

restive zealot
#

ah

desert agate
#

yes it was slower which is a disadvantage but it could also carry AAMs to defend itself, and wingmen if called upon, which the TSR-2 could not

#

oh and the F-111 could reach mach 2.5 at altitude and mach 1.2 at sea level, both actually faster than the TSR-2

#

which again calls into question how the TSR-2 was in any way a better platform other than Avro Arrow tier cope

@restive zealot 10:42 pm for you, but if it's not too late, I'd advise not to use colour guides from the manufacturer. 90% of the time they're awful or outright bad.

For Akagi, she is decked out in Yokosuka Arsenal Grey at the outbreak of the Pacific War. For Kaga, she's in Sasebo Arsenal Grey.

As for the colour itself, I'd first suggest you to find a company first. Are you going to use Tamiya, Mr.Hobby, Vallejo, Lifecolor, or something else?

#

Then you do mix and matching. As I recall, Tamiya has Sasebo and Kure Grey as an independent colour.

#

same for Yokosuka.

#

Now, as for general appearance, vertical and steel surfaces are decked in this colour, unless otherwise stated; Flight deck is in natural gold growth pine (bei matsu) colour, and fantail has their katakana markings, as well as their red and white stripes. As of Midway, Akagi is confirmed to have a Hinomaru (the red meatball) on the forward part of the flight deck. No photos of the Kaga, however, emerged from said battle, but US pilots seem to recall seeing one.
