richie's shells have better pen than littorio's
Why don’t Richy’s 380mm guns get the same treatment
better quality

This isn’t even a question about Richelieu

Ships like the KGV's, Richies and us BB's that served the entire war and have ample of sample data on all sorts of engagements, surviving all of them
vs
bismark
Didn't knew Wales survived
Oh, stumbled across the ol’ “Ducol steel > KC n/A” chestnut
Interesting
Never mind that Ducol steel is a structural steel…
whenever the steel argument gets used...
Soyuz bad steel lol lost

I should sign off textwalls this way
their superstructure looked a little funny
thats about it
even thats pretty much made up for by how sick all the various gun mounts look
Found Undy’s less literate sibling
She was built in the treaty era and was bigger than any ship, bar the Yamamoto class
Jan Willem de Winter sound very french
Jan Willem de Winter (French: Jean Guillaume de Winter, 23 March 1761 – 2 June 1812) was a Dutch admiral during the Napoleonic Wars.

Probably slightly more effective than liquid steel armor
hi
Hello

wouldnt liquid steel melt the incoming shells?

get on my scientific level 9head
if alan turing didnt solve engima , i woudnt have to study coding right ?
No, you would

There were a, uh, lot more people involved than Mr. Turing
real shame how turing was treated after the war
Ah yes, that vital aspect of battleship classification. Secondary battery.
Giving Soyuz armor plates made out of depleted uranium, Titanium reinforced by pure carbon, metallic helium, and thousands of karat diamond. Covered with osmium. Then put under heavy pressure.
sir please
this is shitposting not a wet dream
just fill the sides with bubblegum
shells will bounce off horse youre a genius
fill the sides with non newtonian fluids
we're just going french now

But then it all falls apart because it was made in the USSR
just pick up the shells and throw them back at the enemy
And only 10% of plate passes acceptance tests
simple as
POV Marat
if it's 10% when working with steel, what happens if it's whatever that shit is?

Make the armor out of bose einstein condensate. It will slow the shell down instantaneously, releasing all the energy it had as light, heat and sound which would create a 300 mile crater in the earth’s crust
amazing protection
so true bestie
None of it, presumably
Soviets wanted metal plates from US. Why you guys didn't sell it

thought you guys loved open trade and such
open trade
the trade is with Stalin
Yes. It's called Open for a reason
meanwhile in Australia sells iron ore to Imperial Japan
And hey. Roosevelt was fine with it
so you open his head with a Carcano? To save thousands of lives?
you just make the painter stronger
Roma and Impero, built with some of the last large steel shipments Italy got from the US lol
gentlemen please theres more than enough carcano rounds to go around
my man
Oi why Italy can get US steel tho

If only us built carcanos had the correct barrel diameter
that's why the soviets were getting italy to build ships for them
amerikkkastahl
Apparently after 1920 you can buy shit from the US without the quality being buggered
Britain is so stupid. They saw Bismarck and built Hood to counter it!@?!? They pickewd the right gun setup for once but they failed so hard copying Bismarcks armour and it showed because it got beaten by him in the Battle of Britain.
Should have finished Izmail sisters with that steel
thousand yard stare from ordering ships built in US yards in the 1860s
Sorry just trying to imitate Quora.
put up a fucking warning before you post things like this
I mean it is said the quality of the bbs in the great white fleet was good?
i saw my life flash before my eyes

have you ever tried building a British ship in your own yards?
and then also issues with armor plate ordered for dreadnoughts
7 fucking years for a CL
Interestingly the RM only ever ordered one ironclad battleship from a British yard
over 3 years for a destroyer
That's not bad.
do
do not look up RCN Tribal class build times
Versus two from the states and something like eight from France
And then everything else was ordered at home
Blessed
Now Bismarck and Hood only straddled with 5% of their salvos?
Bismarck only fired 11 full salvos (and 3 partial salvos), and PoW only fired 21 (partial) salvos, so how that would even add up to 5% is baffling. Also implies Bismarck straddled less than once yet scored 4-5 hits, while PoW straddled once and scored 3 hits
they're just that good
pretty sure that until the Hobarts were commissioned in 2017 HMAS Adelaide (1922) was the largest warship built in Australia
Soviets
For US: Give us your armor plates. No? Then build us a BB with Mark 6 guns (so we can scrap her parts and remove guns for Soyuz). Also build us a destroyer leader if possible best you can offer
To France: Build us 450mm guns. Too busy? Damn
To British: Secret talks about a BB project. Didn't go through
To Italy: Fren
When did we ever ask the soviets for something tho
To Germany: Give Bismarck, Zeppelin, Hipper blueprints, sell us 2? Hipper, give us lot of equipment and 380mm guns
wow, picking a ship from your favourite faction you want. Don't be so picky.
and the French still had to be dragged kicking and screaming out of the deal

Sold it to Egypt. But paid the money back
They got honor there

Tho I am sort of curious what a 25 lb 6” shell would look like
Second, the Bismarck used a “turtle” armor arraignment would not have stood up to the British 15″ shells.

The Lamborghini supplied to the Bologna traffic police, on display from Thursday at the Student Hall in Cremona, was destroyed in an accident in Cremona. The 'bolide' in fact crashed into parked cars to avoid a car that would have cut its way. The two officers on board were not seriously injured. The car, 5,000 displacement, was preceded by another police car, headed for Castelvetro Piacentino to take the motorway and return to Bologna. However, a car came out of a petrol station, cutting off the agents' road. To avoid this, the Lamborghini driver swerved to the right and crashed into two parked cars. The two officers aboard the Lamborghini were not seriously injured: the driver suffered the crushing of a vertebra and the fracture of a rib, the other only bruises.

very very seriously
like unconscious type of injuries
tho im trying to understand if in this particular case is just a result of mistranslation
it probably is
cuz from what im seeing this wasnt a fracture
it's just an impact on the nerve
so yeah, not a severe injury
now for something less

Either way, more IJN ships added to my shit list
KF51... better than "Panther MBT" name on it.
sex
In March 1942 Dutch prisoners were gathered together at Kota Radja shortly after the fall of the NEI. They were loaded aboard sloops, which the IJN then towed out to sea. Once a considerable distance from the shore, the guards began shooting the bound Dutch prisoners, and throwing them dead or wounded into the sea where all of them perished. When Tarakan fell to Japanese forces in January 1942, local Dutch forces were herded aboard a Japanese light cruiser, which took them to the spot where a Japanese destroyer had been fired on during the battle. Japanese naval officers and NCOs then set about beheading the unfortunate prisoners in such a ritualistic way probably stems from the loss of face Nagumo’s fleet had suffered in attempting to sink one single little American destroyer. The IJN often took out its frustrations upon those enemy soldiers, sailors and airmen unfortunate enough to fall into its clutches.

which bote
I don't think Nagumo even ever commanded a landing operation, or that any of his ship diverted into such operation. He was high seas carrier admiral through and through.
Sounds like a Tone thing to do
TONE sinks British freighter SS BEHAR. She takes aboard 108 captives, but four die.
15 March 1944:
Arrives at at Batavia. Disembarks 32 POWs.
18 March 1944:
Departs Batavia. Aboard AOBA en route to Singapore, ComCruDiv 16, Rear Admiral Sakonjo Naomasa (former CO of SETTSU) orders the remaining 72 captives beheaded. [4]```
—Tone TROM
2 years later

And Brit
I'm reading that chapter right now
It's actually fucking horrible
The XO pleaded for the 100 men to be released at Batavia, managed to save 30 souls, even challenged the admiral and defied orders
Tone's CO doesn't give a shit and the Admiral on board the Aoba is the real cunt - ordered all of them to be executed

XO's the only "good" apple of the bunch, but was guilt ridden for not doing hard enough to save the remaining 70 men.

The fact they changed it to KF51 means it is just this.
KFXX is the Lynx family nomenclature
i get that like
the TAM is literally called "medium Argentinian tank"
but it's a light tank

yeah
I had to check OTO for possibility for some weird acquisition

But even then, "american"
Actual question that's been on my mind for some time now
How did outdoor BBQ culture came to be in the US and Australia
BBQ culture in Australia?
I actually only know about bbq Chips so here's a website on it
Got to the I-8 part of war crimes, just absolute pain
Any cannibalism by the ijn?
I know the ija practiced a substantial bit of it, but I’m not sure about the ijn
Haven't seen anything yet
but fucking hell, marching survivors off to the sub's stern, then shoot them/beat them in the head until they fall and let the prop blades kill them
This is next level fucked
Yknow
We Chinese give the Japanese a lot of shit for their war crimes against China in shanghai and nanking but
If you look at Chinese history we do said war crimes on the time to each other
That doesn't fucking justify Japanese war crimes in a totally different period and context.
It doesn’t
In an age bound by "treaties" in which Japan blatantly violates.
It’s just funny how Chinese people always be getting the short end of the stick
Whether by the Japanese or by themselves
It's almost as if conflicts are bound to happen when you have multiple ethnicities living together and literally having kingdoms trying to kill each other off every 2-3 years.
A poem, if you will
"the death toll is reputed to have been enormous, possibly one million out of a total provincial population of three million, before he was eventually killed by the Manchus."[35] The combination of deaths from the massacres and other causes as well as flight of people from the province resulted in a sharp drop in the population of Sichuan. The population has been estimated to have dropped by as much as 75%, with fewer than a million people left in Sichuan, most of whom were clustered in the periphery areas
Yes, I've read that
Also China is mostly Han ethnicity, with the occasional sprinkle of mongols in the north
It's also unfortunately an urban legend
have you gotten to the fate of captured pilots at Midway yet
have you also heard about Yuudachi and Murakumo's shit
Machine gunning survivors of Little, you mean?
I wish I have the courage to scrap Yudachi like you did.
as her other exploits are all made up
least moral faction at sea challenge
Honestly I'm curious, how many of the hundred thousand number battles in pre-modern China could be historically attested and how many are pure exaggerations
The problem is that the records can be unreliable
because logistically wise they would have to be scouring State sized areas for food every time they move if the number are consistently above 200,000
Sima Qian's records, for example, were influenced due to being made during the Han Dynasty
ah him, he was the person that was humiliated and castrated in court, and his response was to make said records right
Yes.
Others, like the three kingdoms, were exaggerated and romanticised quite a bit
(Thus Romance of the Three Kingdoms)
and yeah I agree, first hand records are, well, unreliable since obviously everyone wants to exaggerate their or their enemy's numbers for propaganda value
And then there's the folklore records
History for the sake of conveying a point, rather than accuracy
For example, I mentioned before that the pronunciation of January was altered due to censorship during the Qin Dynasty
@spiral cedar most sources place the time of the five minutes of fate at midway at 10:22 am, but what time zone is this?

Probably local
what do people usually mark as the start of those 5 minutes?
I thought Yorktown and Enterprise's dive bombers converged on the Japanese fleet around 10:00?
10:22 is whe the runs start
so tmrw at 2:22 pm pst is exactly 80 years from the five minutes of fate
I found a nuclear submarine
what is arguably the most effective heavy AA gun used by the IJN?
460 mm with sanshiki shells
big = good, got it
no it was terrible
anyways their most effective AA gun was arguably the 100mm
the one used on the Akizuki class
Type 98 was as good as you can get gun-wise
Of course there's shell fuzing and director still needed
ofc, it was sarcasm
heavy AA
I bet you can't lift the 20mm type 98
whats second to the 100mm?
What's the common delineation anyway?
< 2" light
2"-3" medium
> 4" heavy?

I thought it was like
40mm is undoubtedly medium tho
aa
Yeah lmao 40mm and up is heavy to me

Fuck even 20mm is pretty big all things considered
my headcanon is
sub 40 mm: light
40mm - 76mm: medium
76 m - : heavy
Yeah that's generally what I use when I wanna encompass everything
Was trying it out
But then had to ask
20mm is peashooter as far as the navy is concerned
Cause a 105mm howitzer gets labeled as a medium arty in almost every game I play so wanted to make sure

Well yes, on naval platforms due to them being able to have larger guns into quite small
Heck, I'd classify 20mm as emotional support weapon
Just to give crews something to shoot with and giving the illusion of doing something
But, my brain goes to how a 20mm canon in planes during the time were quite poggers
And that counts as AA

And yeah I do agree with that, what's it called like a placebo?
As long as you believe its gonna help you it can maybe
Had the horrible idea of bring a 20mm orlikcon to an airport as my emotial support animal
Me: I have it's papers and everything. It has to go on the plane with me
TSA:

Thanks yall
Now I don't know much on German AA outside like
38mm things and up, but they did have their own 20mm aa gun right? Or did they use a 13.7mm one? Or both
they had 20mm
OK good
38mm they did not have
Wait
I forgot I knew that
Tried printing some for the uboats I made, but they decided to be historical accurate and be horrible prints
37mm yes
tell that to the soldier who got a piece of the barrel stuck in his chest after it burst
it's a very old caliber
German calibers are just
Weird to me
37mm is a french caliber
Oh
Soviet 37mm
So it's quite an old caliber then
That looks cute
Soviet twin 37mm
What are those like
Horn looking things with the rods
I'm assuming they rotate and do elevation?

Should be yeah. Not really good with all their functions
Ah on thought so
I've made like
Models for every nation outside the USSR aa/arty/at gun wise and that just looked very out of place in comparison to other stuff jve seen
Is that french?
yes
@maiden citrus
close to
What about the quad 37mm? Was designed for Soyuz and Kronshtadt class. But only prototype was used on Gangut
Neat
dunno why you'd want to shoot at 90°

a nice photo for sure
since eath's rotation does not allow for minecraft style arrow suicide
except on the north and south poles

When you melt your barrels after 250 rounds

curious that you say that silver
since the US attempted the same with new shells that were pre-rifled

I love that emote
Im more just poking fun at the high rpm and barrel wear if anything.
Also how does 250 rounds kill the barrel of an aa gun
Like, to much force from the round? Or is it cause the high rpm and no cool down time?
165 rpm according to navweaps. Also, I misremembered, it's 600 rounds.
2 minutes of continuous fire.

basically tea, they combined high RPM and high MV
Too many murms

Just a random proposal. Only naval gun that was made of that scale was 533mm by Germans of that large

No, planned for H-45 KMS Führer, clearly.

Ship disasters in the late 1800's be like:
mf's who can swim:
🏊♂️
mf's who can't swim:

Pretty sure that's applicable well into the 1940s
Yes but its especially prevalent then
far more people could swim and were encouraged to be able to swim by then
I actually think you had to know how to swim iirc, but could be wrong

The Akagi, converted aircraft carrier of the Imperial Japanese Navy, is today's subject.

Hey at least PANG will carry Rafale Ms rich
Until they get replaced with next generation
I hate American foreign policy I hate American foreign policy I hate American foreign policy I hate American foreign policy I hate American foreign policy

Same
Maybe try having better defence exports than the competition then

Rafael fans explaining how its in any way a better platform than the Super or Classic F/A-18
The Supers are the best carrier born 4.5gen naval aircraft in service with anyone
STOBAR launching super hornets just seems
wrong
thing is so sluggish compared to other 4th gens
guessing significant compromises to payload and fuel load to achieve that
Not like the Rafael is any better suited to STOBAR operations
STOBAR in general just sucks unless you have a aircraft built for it in mind from the ground up
India will get F-35bs or something in 10 years probably
Very likely
I doubt India's getting F-35B
The quad is only getting stronger and closer
the geopolitics and its relations with Russia don't really allow for that
Or they'll develop their own vtol
yeah good luck at that
India got S-400. Would be another slap to Turkey if they get 35
They won't be getting modern Russian jets any time soon
Indian VTOL sounds like 30 years of development hell followed up by a lackluster aircraft
I really doubt they'd ever get F-35 without a major shift which I doubt India is going to make
They left the Su 57 program for their own fighter. They will likely not buy any fifth gen
They left the SU-57 because it's a shitty program lmfao
Yeah F35 program gone much smoothly huh
They're already making it
F-35s operational
Su-57 will never be nor will the Su-75
holy fuck just accept that the F-18 super horny is not the best
India got scammed by the US
Difference is there's over 2000 F-35s in active service
Compared to 6 completed SU-57s

What
man we paid F-35 costs for the F-14 back in the 80s
Yeah heard about that one
high aircraft costs + trouble development is nothing new
Bro the F/A-18F is an exceptional program that's leagues above literally any equivalents
no
it's not "leagues above"
wheeze
that's not how the aircraft industry works
Australian Government purchased 75 A and B variants of the F/A-18 in 1981 to replace the RAAF's Dassault Mirage III fighters.
So we can see why Spon likes F18
I mean ofc it is because australia had them
The Mirage is a 3rd gen lmfao
I'm asking him not to let that cloud his judgement
And it was a good platform for its time
👁️ tho the F-18 is the inferior American 4th gen out of the 4
I'm not

If F18 is that good. Why many purchased F16 instead
its a decent aircraft but in terms of airframes
F-14 (NOT THE F-14A), F-16 and F-15 excel over it
The F-15EX is better now but it's not carrier operated
so why buy F18 if there is 16
in the 80s it had some capabilities the F-16 didn't receive until later
like default sparrow integration

even if its the worse out of the 4 doesn't mean its a bad aircraft as well
Yeah an F-16 might be better than a classic Hornet but not a Super Hornet
Also single engine

F35 worse than F18 now?
Wait. I just realized
it also has a superior short take off capability
F-17s the F-18
The what
who
F-35 single engine is a criticism
The Northrop YF-17 (nicknamed "Cobra") is a prototype lightweight fighter aircraft designed by Northrop aviation for the United States Air Force's Lightweight Fighter (LWF) technology evaluation program. The LWF was initiated because many in the fighter community believed that aircraft like the F-15 Eagle were too large and expensive for many co...
Mfs skipped a number 😔
But the F-35 is still an exceptional platform with a single engine
F1 on land
was enlarged for the navy and became the F-18
And looking at loss rates F-35 vs F-16
night ops
idk once you get the F-14B its a excellent aircraft it just costs a crapton
tho maybe the F-14D wasn't the program that should of gotten the axe when LCS and Zumwalt was on the table
👁️ tho that's with the benefit of hindsight
Imagine if US give it a go for F-22's naval variant with swept wings
And again Super Hornets are vastly better platforms than an F-16
navy never wanted the naval F-22
again the F-14 was already super expensive and hard to maintain
only reason why they were in the program was to get USAF funding for their own programs
then the airforce withdrew from the A-12 program
The McDonnell Douglas/General Dynamics A-12 Avenger II was a proposed American attack aircraft from McDonnell Douglas and General Dynamics. It was to be an all-weather, carrier-based stealth bomber replacement for the Grumman A-6 Intruder in the United States Navy and Marine Corps. Its Avenger II name was taken from the Grumman TBF Avenger of W...

thing they actually wanted
Ah 70s wing sweep systems
basically the navy had everyone of its fucking aircraft programs fail and were left with only the super hornet
If it weren't for the maintenance intensity of the wing sweep system the RAAF would have kept the F-111
F-14D honestly would of been okay to keep especially if it means axing the LCSs
So what are the things F-18 Super Horny has over Rafale M
tho again that's with the benefit of hindsight knowing how Zumwalt and LCS went down
the ideal US navy would of just made a aegis OHP and a upscale burke with the Zumwalt radar set to meet its needs
idk its a shame honestly what happened to Zumwalt
It's the curse of +150mm naval guns
It always fails some reason
But everyone wants it
depends honestly
as much as I used to shit on it
you could of made it work with just reducing it to 1 gun per ship
and giving it a wider ammo set to supplement the more expensive guided rounds
Well. Wonder what they will do with guns now
other issue is Zumwalt probably needed
several more years in development before they built her
her capability got boiled down due to cuts in key parts of her radar set
I thought Navy was in rush to replace Burkes
Supers carry more armament, better targeting system, more hardpoints, better range
Zumwalt wasn't a Burke replacement
Not sure about radar
ideally she would of been a Ticon replacement
Didn't Burke construction stopped but continue when Zumwalt cancelled
idk she was just a Burke successor more than anything
beyond that navy basically has 3 ships with boiled down capability
and are trying to decide what to do with them
idk Gerald R Ford is a innovation on a already existing concept
Yeah uhh
24? New technology on a single platform
Zumwalt is a reimagining of the the idea of the destroyer
Hard to fuck on what's a proven template
there's a reason why she failed
Instead of reinventing a Nimitz
Well Ford has less crew
New catapults
New toilets?
Uhh
New elevators for ammo
New radars
Potential ability to carry future planes in mind
New reactor
Oh yeah. Uss Enterprise will be much better
Gerald's mistakes learned will be apply on it
And they will use new method for construction
Forget it's name
Gerald R. Ford CVN 78 Aircraft Carrier Program Update during Sea Air Space 2022.
Briefing by Capt. Brian Metcalf, PMS 378 Program Manager.
USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) is the lead ship in the Ford-class of aircraft carrier, the first new class in more than 40 years, and will begin the phased replacement of Nimitz-class carriers.
The USS Ger...
Here this guy explained it
people kinda forget
the pure amount of teething issues both enterprise and Nimitz went through as well
Tho I have honest complaint
Gerald's failure to use F-35
That's just damn weird
she has to be upgraded for it
That Nimitz can launch but Ford cant
I don't think Nimitz has F-35C capability herself
tho some of the Nimitz class carriers have been upgraded for it
John F Kennedy is gonna have it so
I think it's problem with catapults
Where steam can handle the weight but Electromagnetic cant
they should be able to
???
Zumwalt was a Spruance replacement
how wonderful it is as that
Excellent
It was never supposed to have BMD
it was, until it got cut
The old PP slides do indeed show BMD
With the SPY-3/SPY-4 dual band radar suite
@spring briar
Please don't overtax the poor SPY-3 any more
She's had to take on all of the SPY-4's search tasks and the illuminator's task of missile guidance illumination. (The flush mounted CW illuminator for ZumZum was canned)
ESSM only loadout
idk once they rip out her 155s for hypersonic tubes suppose she'll have a use assuming they ever do that
?
build ultra bespoke 155s with speciaux sneauflake ammo
only order small amounts of ammo
can ammo for unit cost being too high
she's already one of the best ASW ships in the fleet
Zumwalt was meant to be a Sprucan replacement, but generally a more multirole ship than the Sprucan's ever were.
However, the USN recognized in the 2000s that this was no longer a viable idea, as what the fleet needed more than anything else to deal with the rising threat of the PLAN was a hell of a lot more AAW escorts, which is why they cut the Zumwalt's and restarted Burke production.
ZumZum had a very long and tortured history
4.2 billion dollars a ship really should be buying you more than just ASW capability and ground attack capability
Had she been built to original spec, she'd still be great
indeed
Fully loading Zumwalt with 155mm shells cost 2.5 bil right.
But that's a story for a time when I'm not having to bukisleep
idk I’m just accepting the fact I’m living off of 4 hours of sleep today
Sleep deprived gang
well, [EXPLETIVES REDACTED]
why the [REDACTED] brushing into Isidore of Kiev during my idle research on Conquest/Fall of Constantinople trips a switch in my head that wants Kyiv ASMR (think the official ones Ayanami and Hipper have)
What
(Isidore was an eyewitness of much of the Siege and snuck out during the early hours of the fateful Black Tuesday after he was wounded earlier in the day, btw.)
You mean Kiev ASMR?
Are you high?
'you' being?
