It's almost the 80 year anniversary of the hood sinking

It's on the 21st of may

Huh

Wait really?

Sorry 81st

Also that’s really interesting

Hood is dying in the prelude

And we’ll see it on there 21st

Can't be something the Dutch shot at. When the Dutch silenced artillery at Sicily they hit the artillery itself.

HMAS Brisbane's bridge and gun

#

Because Canberra is a poor location for a naval museum but the war memorial needed some way of recognising the navy

#

Given like 70% of the indoor space is just air force stuff

#

We are very proud of our air force sometimes I get concerned we go too far but then I look at Canada and decide we're fine

we're basically the opposite

nobody really cares about our military at all

in the grand scheme of things

spring briar
#

I care about your sniper rifles

#

does that count?

desert agate
#

It's a fucking miracle you didn't go with the gripen

tough quail
#

i care about your weird leopard refits

eager dove
#

I would have been surprised if we went with the Gripen

#

it's kind of a nonsensical pick

desert agate
#

A world where Australia gives so little a fuck about defence that we went with Gripen is not one I'd want to live in

#

We have a weird relationship with the military culturally and shit

eager dove
#

the Canadian Army is the only branch to really have got any public attention

#

the airforce to a more limited degree

#

the Navy is the forgotten branch largely

desert agate
#

The air force has always gotten the lions share of attention in the modern age

somber knoll
#

But sometimes Canadians have a very weird taste in weapons.
I still remember the Inglis Hi-Power being a bit of a meme back in the day.

desert agate
#

2nd oldest air force in the world fuck you South Africa

eager dove
#

back in the day?

#

we still use it now lol

#

the Army got all of the glory for fighting land engagements throughout the years

#

the Navy was always relegated to largely supporting roles due to a lack of funding

#

they never got their battle

desert agate
#

Historically yeah people pay more attention to the army

#

But the navy has always been important

#

And we're very proud of our air force

somber knoll
# eager dove back in the day?

I mean back when some enthusiasts (and veterans too) decided to put FN parts to ther Inglis then figured out it was way off because of different measurement PortDoll

We have the Hobart's they're fine for escorting a light carrier

Bruh, my girlfriend in Ontario once complained that the Army always gets the bling compared to the other branches.

Especially now we're discussing getting another 3

eager dove

and the Navy and Airforce is getting all of the major funding atm

somber knoll
#

The Diemanco C8 is a mistake AkagiLUL

eager dove
#

Hobarts are a bit sussy for escort work even for one carrier

#

rule of thumb is generally you need three ships minimum to have one operational at all times

#

that's the bare minimum

desert agate
#

If we get an extra 3

#

That should be fine

eager dove
#

there's been no indication I've seen that you guys will get 3 more

desert agate
#

Depends who wins the election

eager dove
#

it's Hunters or nothing

desert agate
eager dove
#

I'll believe it when I see it

#

talk is cheap especially from politicians around elections

desert agate
eager dove
#

the main issue is that you guys have had at minimum a two year lapse since you commissioned the last ship

ivory ridge
#

Navantia cringe

eager dove
#

since the original plan was never for more than the original order, the yards very likely didn't keep themselves at a point where they are ready to jump into continued production

#

also yes navantia cringe

#

it very likely isn't as easy of an option as some people say it is

desert agate
#

They're talking about partially building them in Spain to deal with potential issues with Osborne shipyard

eager dove
#

that only gives you time to potentially address the issue

#

it doesn't necessarily solve it

#

people who work in shipyards don't sit around

desert agate
#

It's up in the works rn anyway and it's not like the people who worked on the initial block disappeared

eager dove
#

they generally move to where the work is

#

they also very likely haven't been sitting around for over two years waiting for work to fall into their laps

desert agate
#

The work is in Osborne and Henderson

#

Henderson especially is pumping out ships every 2-3 months

somber knoll
#

Don't think old Scott will boost the Navy if he gets reelected there.

desert agate
#

Scomo will

#

But he's a fuckhead

#

Both leaders have the exact same policy on naval expansion

#

As in we need it urgently

eager dove
#

if the plans for Australia to upgrade the current Hobarts to better radars and other systems is true, you could be looking at even more delays and issues

somber knoll
eager dove
#

if they are redesigning to get these new systems into another trio from the start

desert agate
#

Regardless the political drive is there

chilly osprey
#

TBH I'd actually argue - had this been done from the start - that buying more Hobarts and not trying to stick CEAFAR2, or at least using a reduced version on the Hunters, would have been the better bet

#

I'd get you could save a significant amount of weight not bothering with the L-band panels

desert agate
#

The Solomon's debacle has proven that we need a bigger navy and we need it 5 years ago

#

Tbh we need the Hunters to act as front-line combatants too

#

We need the mission Bay and we need peer combatant capability and sacrifices needed to be made

chilly osprey
#

And leave the more intensive AAW stuff to the actual AAW destroyers

eager dove
#

that's the price you pay for propping up domestic radar development

#

and seemingly going so hard into a large radar array

desert agate
#

well yeah

#

But ceafar is based

#

So

this doesn't look especially "based" to me

Mainly because a good navy actually has a reason to exist now like it didn't in the 60s

eager dove

I do agree with Phoenix

I think it would have been worthwhile to invest in AAW capability from the start

Canada has the excuse of doing it with CSC since we're going for a one stop shop for the entire Navy with one design

but Australia has an AAW and ASW split

#

feels like they are too far into the Hunter program to divert now

ivory ridge
#

half of this wont end up anywhere but lmao

desert agate
#

Yeah but defence spending is only going to get higher after this election

#

There will be more ships

eager dove
#

perhaps

#

but considering how many high cost programs you guys have ongoing

desert agate
#

Hunters are done and dusted, no government will risk a second Attack class debacle

eager dove
#

I wouldn't be so immediately sure

somber knoll
eager dove
#

you guys are staring down the barrel of the most ambitious submarine procurement in the world in recent memory

desert agate
#

But the profound need to immediate modernisation and expansion and replacement of previous shitty procurements has become the driving force of modern defence policy

Ugh

you guys signed the deal with the devil when you agreed to the Attack class with France

desert agate

Stabbing one of our closest regional partners in the back like that

eager dove

France did not have your interests in mind and you guys built off ramps into the program

#

France can get fucked

spring briar

desert agate

All of the issues were having with the French could have been avoided if we just allowed them in the tender process for the new boats

eager dove

America is my new best friend

tender process for what?

#

nuke boats?

desert agate
#

We're likely choosing British nuke subs

#

Yeah

eager dove
#

French nuclear submarines are entirely unsuited to your political and operational needs

desert agate
#

An open and fair submarine competition would have avoided these issues

tough quail
#

doesn't need to be selected

desert agate

Irrelevant, at least including them would have meant they wouldn't be as pissed off

tough quail
#

the issue is just booting them out like absolute cunts

desert agate
#

Exactly

eager dove
#

I have minimal sympathy when France was acting belligerent towards their own customer

desert agate
#

They're probably our 2nd closest defence partner right now behind only the US

#

Or at least

#

Were

tough quail
#

you don't really get a rep for being a good trade partner when you just ghost a huge ally knee deep in a procurement program and then ghost them on the replacement

eager dove
#

French nuclear submarines do not run off the "lifetime closed reactor" system like US reactors

desert agate
#

The French were being cunts too but they should have been included in the tender process regardless

eager dove
#

they run off much lower grade fuel and require them to be ripped open and refueled every decade or so

#

that is a deal breaker for Australia

#

US reactors are a closed module you drop into the hull and plug in

#

and is good for the lifetime of the boat

manic latch
#

Tfw Australia gets nuclear subs before nuclear reactors hmm

desert agate
#

There's so much more to this than just subs because France is one of the few definite allies we have that more or less borders us

# tough quail you don't really get a rep for being a good trade partner when you just ghost a ...

The Australians built off ramps into this program so they could leave whenever they felt like it. Was it right for them to do it in the way they did? I don't think so but you also have to realize what the French were doing to Australia here. One of the main reasons why this program went through and the agreement was signed was for major development to Australian submarine industry and to build the boats largely in Australia. Throughout the process, France repeatedly renegotiated larger and larger percentages of work away from Australia and back into France itself.

desert agate
#

Unlike Europe and America, Australia can be an energy exporter on pure solar and wind

eager dove
#

the French effectively did this to themselves

chilly osprey
eager dove
#

even if the Australians weren't entirely diplomatic about the exit from the program

#

France signed onto the deal full well knowing Australia wanted this done domestically at basically any cost and continued to cut into that fact as time went on

#

basically undermined the project as a whole

desert agate
#

In the words of a former German energy minister "the best place in Germany for solar energy is worse than the worst place in Australia for solar energy"
Which is why Europe needs nuclear power, but we don't

eager dove
#

there's also a huge swath of complications and issues with the Attack class design as a whole

desert agate
#

And never will

eager dove
#

it was immensely risky

junior trench
#

have fun with a powergrid that is constantly dying due to base load issues

eager dove
#

French nuclear submarine turned conventional with American tech rammed into it

desert agate
#

The Attacks were a very sketchy program from the start

eager dove
#

that is asking for a disaster

desert agate
#

And I'm not saying they should have gone ahead at all

eager dove
#

although atleast Australia seemingly has the deep pockets, allied support and political willpower to go ahead with nuclear subs

#

makes me jealous

desert agate
#

I'm just saying we should have been nicer to one of the only nations that basically borders us

eager dove
#

I agree to a point

somber knoll
eager dove

forever banished to the euro export boats

spring briar
#

truly the worst of fates

desert agate
#

I'm pretty happy with the way defence is going in terms of spending rn

#

In the last 10 years the navy has gone from a pretty obsolete force running mediocre second line frigates and some 30+ year old destroyers to replacing old assets, expanding capability and modernising the Anzacs
The air force has gone from a very capable force to an even more capable force operating modern 5th gen and expanding by an additional squadron of fighters
The army meanwhile is currently going through that same modernisation phase, just finished replacing the old F88s for new EF88s, is about to begin replacing old M113s and is about to become the first non-US operator of full spec Abrams'

eager dove
#

get the US to build you guys a pair of QEesque ships

#

but not shit

#

😆

desert agate
#

And defence spending is only increasing

#

Remember the optimistic ramps on the Canberra's friend

Bankroll the construction of another yard in the US that can build carriers and build some modern Forrestal's/Kitty Hawks in there.

That way the Americans will build some for you and them

#

And Whatismoo can get his CVL force for the Atlantic

eager dove
#

🙏

desert agate

The cope slope is only there because one officer was feeling very cheap, and very optimistic at the same time

Yes I am advocating for basically a bigger Majestic class how can you tell

eager dove
#

Moo's CVL idea is basically perfect for you then

Solar can be done on land that isn't indigenously owned

junior trench

so can nuclear

desert agate
#

All of the mineable uranium in Australia is on indigenous land

junior trench
#

so what

desert agate
#

In fact uranium mining is inherently exploitative of indigenous people

junior trench

it's a mine shaft

it's not genocide lol

To force them off it is genocide

manic latch

Sadge Wish I had spiritual connection with Soyuz

junior trench

who said anything about forcing them off

just because Australia is broke and resorts to strip and open pit mining doesn't mean that's the only option

desert agate
#

You have to force them off if they say "no we don't want uranium mines on our land"

junior trench
#

no you don't lol

desert agate
#

Australia universally uses open pit mining these days

maiden citrus
spring briar

well australia can either go nuclear or depend on chinese solar panel contracts for the foreseeable future
or wacky solar farm projects

desert agate

Because strip mining is obsolete

China has a monopoly on rare earth so yes

manic latch
desert agate

Last time my argument was the environmental destruction caused by outdated mining techniques

My argument currently is that indigenous people have the right to say what happens on their land

junior trench
#

sure

desert agate
#

It's their land

#

Their nation

junior trench

they have a right to a say

but when shit comes to a head, fuck em

desert agate

They have a right to the final say

junior trench

they can certainly think that

desert agate
#

We spent 200 years saying "fuck em" to our indigenous peoples

maiden citrus
#

if it doesn't disturb the land, what's the point

desert agate
#

We are not going back

maiden citrus
#

saying no to say no

#

of course we're also basing this off the comment of 'every single piece of nuclear fuel in australia is not owned by australia'

spring briar
#

australia could go solar and then invest in H2 production and make that their main export

desert agate
#

You can want to go back like some fucking weird genocide advocating maniac but you'll find most Australians don't want that

desert agate
spiral cedar
#

What if you paid the indigenous peoples for uranium Thinkpitz

spring briar
#

what will they do with money

#

pay them in shells or smth?

desert agate
#

There are deposits on crown land and the like but it's not large enough to justify large scale mining operations

manic latch
spiral cedar
desert agate
junior trench
#

so let them keep the land lmao

desert agate
spiral cedar
#

Offer more money Yukari

junior trench
#

usage without ownership under contract is a thing

#

this is just looking for excuses to keep sucking off China so you can keep going solar

spring briar
#

oh we're talking about those aboriginals

desert agate
#

The money would definitely help their communities

#

But again, these people don't want money, they want white people to stop raping their land

spring briar
junior trench
#

despite solar being the most wasteful non-fossil fuel energy production out there

manic latch
#

What if

You mine it through tunnels. So they can't see it and complain

That prevent bushfires?

eager dove
# spiral cedar Let them mine it themselves

We have this issue in Canada. The federal government bought fishing boats and licenses for the native bands in order for them to participate in the commercial fishery and you know what they did? They turned around and leased the same licenses back out to commercial fishermen and didn't want to work them.

spring briar
desert agate
eager dove

some people want to do what they want in the specific way they want to

no other way

desert agate
#

It's just unnecessary in Australia

junior trench

no

manic latch
desert agate
#

We have more than enough alternatives

spiral cedar
#

But you can say that they made that choice

junior trench
#

I mean literally burning biomass for energy to maintain a base load on the grid

spiral cedar
#

It's not being forced upon them

junior trench
#

because solar and wind can't fucking do that

desert agate
eager dove
#

Yeah they did make the choice but like part of the entire point was to lift people out of poverty by giving them jobs

spring briar
#

look it up

eager dove
#

not bringing money to the band chief through leasing and keeping the band members itself poor

junior trench
spring briar
#

it's like the most common way of energy production

#

just combusting shit

eager dove
#

which is what happened to an unfortunate amount of groups

spring briar
#

trying to capture as much of the emmissions as possible

desert agate
#

Oh lol

#

Some bullshit LNP trash

spring briar
#

but in the end you're still burning wood or plant based biomass
which means you're literally re-releasing the absorbed CO2

desert agate
#

Yeah our net0 2030 plans are a little

#

Schitzo

junior trench
#

"burning waste" almost inevitably ends into intensive farming to create biomass to make up for solar and wind being shit at providing baseline

#

at which point just cut the shit and go to nuclear instead because it's legitimately less intensive

spring briar
#

and you just put the CO2 you captured while growing the biomass back into the atmosphere unless you have some really extensive CO2 capture process

desert agate
#

Obviously yes

#

I could go into some detail about this biomass shit

spring briar
#

since even today CO2 capture is in its infancy
only now are scientific papers getting published and those will be put into practice in ~40 years

#

so yea

desert agate
#

But it would be too deep in Australian politics

spring briar
desert agate

And that's rules

#

But basically

ALP net zero based

junior trench

it's labeled as renewable for [redacted] expediency reasons

desert agate
#

It's been labelled as renewable because the LNP is trying to pretend it has a net zero plan

#

Fun fact it doesnt

spring briar
#

the real big brain move australia could do here is to invest in CaO-based CO2 capture technology to combine with their "solar plans" and make a sustainable solar energy based loop

#

just saying
but that takes money they'd rather spend on chinese solar panels

desert agate
#

ChenShrug solar is pretty good for the sunniest continent

#

And wind is nice too for a very windy continent

junior trench
#

but it has no base load

spiral cedar
#

How about really big batteries

junior trench
#

so your grid will be fucking dead

spring briar
#

they will have base load near the coasts if they are willing to invest massively into wind

ivory ridge

that whole thing is so fucking stupid

junior trench

and you want to you use batteries to hold load for a whole national grid?

#

lmao

desert agate
#

Batteries literally saved South Australia

maiden citrus

like I said just use the old subs past their lifecycle batteries

desert agate
#

Like they had the worst power outages in national history

#

We installed batteries with a new system connected to other renewable and their power issues were solved

junior trench
#

lmao

#

do you know what outages actually are?

desert agate
#

Statewide blackouts for over a million people for days on end is a bit of an outage

junior trench
#

it's turning off the power for an area because if you don't your grid fucking dies because you fucked your base load

#

you're lauding a solution to a problem of your own making

#

you're Texas power gridding yourselves, but with renewables instead of uninsulated gas lines lmao

desert agate
#

MurmW but the batteries objectively solved the issues with South Australia's power grid

junior trench
#

that's the neat part

#

it didn't

spring briar
#

You need a physical way of storing that power

#

Either as gas

#

Or as a liquid

#

Solids work too but are not yet viable

desert agate
#

I'm no fan of musk but those batteries saved lives

junior trench

and I haven't even touched on how excess power generation will fuck your grid as well

spring briar
#

Just flare it

junior trench

and btw

desert agate
#

And that's where energy exports come in

#

Read Superpower

junior trench
#

batteries are even worse at it

#

lmao

#

that's not how energy exporting works

#

energy exporting is pre-accounted for

#

spikes in generation that aren't accounted for can't just be dumped into wires to someone else

desert agate
#

ChenShrug wind turbines can be turned off

#

And solar panels can be disconnected from the grid

#

There are ways and means around it

junior trench
#

yes, they can be

#

if you schedule for it

#

because idk if you know this but

#

electricity moves really fast

desert agate
#

The public here is ridiculously anti nuclear anyway

#

The talk around building the second submarine base for the nuclear subs on the east coast has caused huge uproar

junior trench
#

and here we go

#

the final refuge

desert agate
#

ChenShrug as I said before

#

I'm personally in favour of thorium or fusion reactors provided the thorium is mined ethically

#

Fat luck convincing the public tho

spring briar
#

Fusion

desert agate
#

The batteries installed in South Australia responded to fluctuations in the grid faster than the traditional coal plants

#

And they did, as much as you pretend they didn't, prevent any further catastrophe like that which was caused in 2016

#

Which was, yes, caused by shoddy practices in the wind turbine generators and the people running them

junior trench
#

lmao

desert agate
#

But was compounded by years of shitty policy and running of the coal plants

junior trench
#

complaining about the cost of nuclear but stanning for Thorium

desert agate
#

I didn't mention cost once

junior trench
#

you have in the past

desert agate
#

My issue is where the uranium is

junior trench
#

Thorium reactors still need uranium btw

desert agate
#

Ok and I've changed my position on thorium some time ago

junior trench
#

extremely enriched uranium

#

because Thorium is a neutron poison

desert agate
#

We'd probably have to import that anyway

#

Or make huge infrastructure investments which are a good idea anyway

#

The enriched uranium for the nuke subs is coming from overseas

#

Because the facilities don't exist here to enrich shit

junior trench
#

Thorium waste is just as bad/good/whatever as Uranium waste as well, but no one likes to talk about that, because leaving out that you can make U waste as inert doesn't sell the nuclear fear well enough

desert agate
#

ChenShrug not talking about waste

junior trench
#

so you literally only care because you don't think Uranium mining can or should be done

desert agate
#

Talking about the ethics of the mines the fissile material comes out of

junior trench
#

then piss right off lmao

tough quail
#

sound argument there

desert agate
#

ChenShrug I made this clear from the start

#

Idk why you're acting all surprised

tough quail
#

but that doesn't fit the narrative thats let's em act like a smug asshole

desert agate
#

You're the one that came out about waste and cost, which I wasn't discussing in the first place

desert agate
#

Any large scale domestic nuclear industry is going to require domestic mining of fissile material, whether that material is thorium or uranium. Thorium is much more ethically sound than uranium and therefore is the better option, should we ever decide to go nuclear, whatever uranium is require in those thorium reactors can be obtained either by import or by smaller scale mining operations mines that wouldn't normally be viable but won't impact indigenous land title (something which is protected by high court judgements in Mabo v Queensland)

#

If Australia intends to support its naesant nuclear submarine fleet beyond a single class, domestic nuclear industry is going to be necessary regardles

spring briar
#

you can very cheaply ship the fuel from abroad

#

keeping it running is not expensive in terms of fuel

desert agate
#

Not politically viable

#

The mining industry wouldn't allow it

#

They would lobby so hard it would make Rupert Murdoch look like a paper boy

exotic scarab
#

yeah thats the thing I found looking up nuclear power

#

well yes in terms of scale it would be able to replace a fossil fuel planet it has a pretty high cost esspically for a country that doesnt have a domestic source of nuclear fuel

junior trench
#

did you account for the undue burden placed specifically on nuclear

exotic scarab
#

yeah a decent portion of people i've talked to act like nuclear is the magic solution

#

but I think the way to fully replace fossil fuels is a slow mix of many sources

spring briar
#

that's what has been happening yes

#

as slow as it is

exotic scarab
#

to a extent yes but there are issues I dont think we can get into here with removing the fossil fuel dependence of my country of america (cant say anything about any other countries)

spring briar
#

well it's a huge part of american industry and geopolitical influence rn
and any loss in the car industry is gonna be put in the chemical industry

#

so for atleast another 50 years it isn't going to change that much

junior trench
#

Nuclear's cost is massively inflated due to regulations that even coal and other industries that produce concentrated nuclear waste in such quantities they can chase dam breakage floods never had to worry about

#

They're straight up designed to strangle nuclear as much as possible

exotic scarab
#

oh really

#

what regulations?

spring briar
#

the same sort of regulations those other plants have to worry about, with much higher standards
as well as fossil-fuel based industry funding other non-nuclear renewable energy producers like wind and solar just to prevent the nuclear option

#

it's because they know they will get outcompeted

#

the oil industry wants people to believe in the solar and wind story

#

since then they know they can easily compete

#

hence why in any country that has common sense will do additional power generation in conjunction with wind and solar
preferably H2-electrification since it allows excess wind and solar during the day to be converted into H2 without wasting money on batteries

exotic scarab
#

I see

#

Also is it bad that I'm more interested in the history of northern Europe (and British isles) in the middle ages then the United States and the cold war

spring briar
#

no?

exotic scarab
#

good lol because I dont even know half of what we did in the cold war

#

It's needing it permanently have a fossil fuel back up capable of supporting the entire grid, which you need to pay for but rarely actually use, solely because of how serious the consequences of not having enough back up for the whole grid is

#

And as for H2 electrification...

#

Large scale production that produces more energy than it takes to make uses fossil fuels

#

Meanwhile electrolysis takes more energy to produce H2 than that H2 will provide

cinder escarp
#

A "hydrogen economy" only makes sense if you are running nuclear powered electrolysis plants, with the H2 serving as merely an intermediate.

spring briar

It’s really not as big a deal if your country already has nuclear power

#

And combined solar/wind/electrification plants are perfect to put on polluted soil during clean up

dapper parcel
#

it isn't a big deal for anything really. You just need to take every sources in the equation if you want fair comparison

spring briar
#

Something that is often overlooked is the subsidies

#

Depending on what country it is in

#

Those can be the deal maker or breaker

dapper parcel
#

It's just that easy to misled by selectively using numbers sadly
A lot of "green" energy doesn't pass sanity check once you look at total system cost/impact

spring briar

especially when you don't look beyond the 1st scope of said project

the pollution that comes from the cement or solar panels you use in such a project etc.

a lot of companies simply look at their own project in a vacuum which misleads the public

shrewd pecan
#

went down a rabbit hole of New York Times articles on the F-14

#

interesting how much its price inflated over the years

#

1969 they were expecting the platform to cost around 10 million per, by 1975 that inflated to 20 million dollars a plane
https://www.nytimes.com/1975/09/22/archives/price-rise-called-setback-for-f14-prospects-held-weakened-for.html

By Pranay Gupte

Recent disclosure by Defense Dept of $2-million increase in price of F-14 fighter seen weakening prospects for future orders by Pentagon and has placed pressure on craft's supports in Cong and USN; aide to Sen Barry Goldwater, staunch F-14 backer, concedes development is 'sharp setback'; controversy surrounding price of F-14 revd (M)

#

by 1988 the F-14D were going for about 74 million per or about 180 million per

#

so more expensive adjusted for inflation than a new built F-35A

#

hell its more expensive than a F-22A going by the 2011 cost for the F-22A

#

honestly makes me wonder why people fanboy the F-14 as much as they do when trying to compare it to the F-35 or other modern platforms

spring briar
#

top gun

dapper parcel
#

It's much easier to fanboy over single supercapable thing than say other thing with better cost benefit ratio

maiden citrus
#

people cared less about cost at the time, just that it was better than anything else

shrewd pecan
#

fair tho the aircraft was never really worth its cost

#

like the F-14A was kinda lackluster performance wise in a lot of ways

#

and later on the F-14 fleet notably was overshadowed by its competitors

#

its draw backs during the gulf war did prevent it from really engaging in actual air to air combat in that conflict

#

suppose it got proper BVR combat in Iran-Iraq but it didn't really have anything really capable of BVR going against it

Here you go peeps, A poem for the Grand old Lady of the royal navy:

#

You say you have no subject
And your brushes all have dried;
But come to Marazion
At the ebbing of the tide.

And look you out to seaward,
Where my Lady battle scarred
Hugs the rock that is more welcome,
Than the shameful breakers yard.

Paint her there upon the sunset
In her glory and despair,
With the diadem of victory
Still in flower upon her hair.

Let her whisper as she settles
Of her blooding long ago,
In the mist than mingles Jutland
With the might of Scapa Flow.

Let her tell you, too, of Narvik
With its snowy hills, and then
Of Matapan, Salerno
And the shoals of Walcheren;
And finally of Malta,
When along the purple street
Came in trail the Roman Navy
To surrender at her feet.

Of all these honours conscious,
How could she bear to be
Delivered to the spoiler
Or severed from the sea ?
So hasten then and paint her
In the last flush of her pride
On the rocks of Marazion,
At the ebbing of the tide.
