Bearn had torpedo tubes too. Surface ones at that. Most nations arent confident in air power until later.

#

Oddly enough, the incident with Glorious seemed to spur/coincide with nations to briefly reconsider their carriers to be armed to the teeth again, with W102 (Later G13 - Taihou) calling for 155mm guns and Midway for 8" guns again. None would make it off the drawing board, but it was, fwiw, briefly considered.

#

As for the hybrid ship, almost all nations tried investigating it - the idea of a ship being able to carry out two roles is enticing, but often times suboptimally while costing more. Some like Scheme F of the North Carolinas are made due to insistence of leaders (Roosevelt/Hitler), while others are feasibility studies. Gibbs and Cox's 1058.1, so far, however, seems to be just Gibb's obsession with perfection since he never designed a battleship up to that point.

#

So much so the US navy literally sent a letter indicating "pls don't send us this shit thx"

grave ravine
#

The early 30s USN cruiser-carrier designs came from the Navy, but the concept was really largely just the brainchild of Moffett and Pratt, and after Moffett died and Pratt's tenure as CNO ended the concept largely died except for its brief resurrection in the late 30s

USS intrepid’s history at NASA

She rescued two capsules.

One was aurora 7 which rode on an atlas and splashed down WAY off target which required her to go at flanking speed just to recover it.

Another was Gemini 3. It too landed off course mainly the scientists screwed up on the landing zone because they forgot to put the rotation of the earth in the equation. This time it’s less stressful than aurora 7.

Now finally after her retirement, her nasa service wasn’t done

Problem is, when I import them into Blender, Warspite's model is tiny as shit, and Z12's is fucking massive. So I selected all the parts and scaled down Z12 so she could be properly scaled alongside Warspite.

This is the furthest the Germans ever seem to have got with plan Z. It is the incomplete hull of one of the H39 class ships (aka Frederick der Grob/Ulrich von Hutten). Construction was stopped soon after as it was decided to finish the ship when the war ended (which seems a bit pointless to me).

She has ribs and knees, earings, eyes, stays, bonnets, thimbels, and pins. She has a Mate to keep her in trim, but she needs a Master. So, um, if Kaga and Akagi were sister ships, what is Kaga's relationship with Tosa?

eternal veldt
#

They weren't sister ships - simple as that.

#

Akagi is member #2 of the Amagi-class battlecruisers. Kaga is #1 of the Kaga-class battleships, and Tosa is #2.

oak forge
#

Okay, and then somehow they both turn into aircraft carriers and get called as relatives. Sometimes the game lore just confuses me. Although I've read a little bit on Wikipedia.

eternal veldt
#

Both ships were designated for carrier conversion per the Washington Naval Treaty due to Amagi being a total constructive loss in the wake of the Great Kanto Earthquake - and both are assigned to Carrier Division 1.

Kaga was taken into for her first refit in 1934, followed by Akagi in 1935 - resulting in the two ships looking somewhat similar after the early but failed experiments with the "triple" flight deck arrangements.

Ohh, alright, I get it. So both originated from a specific class of warship that isn't related to each other, but after some event, both of them were converted into aircraft carriers. I thought they were sister ships because, in some history documentaries or YouTube videos, they called them sister ships sometimes also in the game lore. But to be considered, could Tosa be the closest sister ship to Kaga?

eternal veldt

Tosa is precisely the (little) sister of Kaga.

eternal veldt
# eternal veldt Akagi is member #2 of the Amagi-class battlecruisers. Kaga is #1 of the Kaga-cla...

Calling Akagi and Kaga sister ships is just flat out wrong owing to their lineage - Akagi is capable of 30 knots due to her lineage as a BC; Kaga is only capable of 27 due to her BB lineage. In fact, the Kido Butai's maximum speed is handicapped precisely because of Kaga's slower speed compared to the ~30 knots on Akagi and the newer Cardiv 2. What she boasts, however, is a larger hangar than any other carrier within the fleet at that time.

oak forge
#

Alright, now I've got another question just pop up inside my head then. Who was the eldest sister of the Takao class? I believe that was Takao, but in-game, Atago sometimes acts like she was the eldest with that "big sister" voice line of hers. It also makes me question whether Maya or Choukai is the youngest of the Takao cruiser class.

You know how hard it is to find a good whistle gif

echo onyx
#

do you know how many kilometers of ground is that to cover

#

tigers were not common

#

you still had tanks like the panzer 2 in use in 1944

timber linden
echo onyx

for example during market garden

timber linden
#

14 Sherman's to 0.33 tiger on an approximate European theater frontline

echo onyx
#

Now that I'm done with spam I also have to add..yes Tigers, Panthers, Panzer IV with the long 75 & the Stug long 75 were present at Market Garden

timber linden
#

Counting both soviet and western and subtracting the most tigers (31) sent to North Africa and giving the tiger max production

#

So normalizing 42 to 1 Sherman to tiger

#

Assuming all Sherman's were sent to Europe

#

Per km of approx frontline in europe

#

So yes 5 to 1 is a myth and sells the american potential short...greatly

echo onyx
timber linden
#

And that Google gave good numbers

#

Not counting italys frontline

#

13 Sherman's to 0.3 tigers if you count the greatest width of the Italian front

#

So normalizing now with rough numbers, 43 Sherman's to 1 tiger

timber linden
echo onyx
#

captured by the soviets which was captured by the germans and brought back..did they use it..don't know

When the Battle of Berlin ended in May 1945, the Soviets discovered two British WWI tanks outside Berlin Cathedral. Many have wondered how they ended up there, and what their role was during the fierce street fighting. In this video, we solve this enduring mystery.

#

Take everything with a grain of salt

#

Okay did more digging, about 1114 (1120 as a rounded number) were delivered to the marines thus sent to the pacific and not the European front. This gives the new sherman per km of from as ~12.

#

Which now normalized is 40 sherman per 1 tiger . Assuming that all Shermans were sent to the front and none were held back to in the home front for training and other uses.

Mark Felton is a filthy plagiarist

#

So yeah don't trust anything from him

#

He's far less take with a grain of salt and more

#

Completely untrustworthy and unreliable because he steals his content wholesale and doesn't attribute at all

#

Also honestly talking about Sherman to Tiger ratio is just pure baloney because in the end the Tiger has to worry more about airpower than other tanks, and even then a good amount of Tigers were knocked out by singular tanks or units without swarming it

#

Some Tigers even disposed themselves by panicking and running into a ditch

remote monolith
# echo onyx ..weren't those Jagdtigers

That's a different case where the Jagdtiger crew lost their nerve and instead of reversing showed its side armor, I'm referring to an incident during Battle of the Bulge where Staff Sergeant Lesniak encountered a Tiger and fired several rounds on it which bounced, but the Tiger for some reason panicked, backed into a Jeep, got stuck and the crew decided to thermite the vehicle

Mark was the one who claimed the Tiger was sold off

#

The Tiger was actually belonging to a private collector already and only on lent to the museum

#

The lend expired, it was returned to the collector, and replaced with a replica

Because he's a plagiarist that puts low efforts to fact check hos videos and sometimes unsettlingly pro-Germany in his assessments

There's a LOT of evidence he cribbed without shame from a lot of other sources and passing them off as original works

I kinda enjoy the chaos

alpine onyx
#

I mean, not uncalled for

#

If you look at a turret with 15.7m barbette diameter and conclude it to be a 203mm quad (when a dual turret was 6.5ish m)

#

Or the "Friedrich" guns, 14.2m barbette diameter, the 38cm turret was 10m.

#

Plausibility check says no

remote monolith
#

He badly misinterpreted data about Hitler's autopsy

#

And claims things not supported in the actual report

#

Seemingly in order to insert suggestions Hitler did not die in Berlin on April 30th 1945

#

There's also that time he genuinely implied Bormann escaped to Argentina and died there

#

This is despite strong evidence the two corpses found in Berlin near the invalidenstrasse bridge in 1972 corresponds perfectly with the medical records of Martin Bormann and Ludwig Stumpfegger

#

So yeah, not a good source at all

#

So don't be surprised if a lot of people criticize mark heavily because he has legitimately done things worth criticizing for

A 40ish % increase in caliber for a 40ish % increase in barbette diameter, seems reasonable to me

If you insist, could also be 48cm, but it's definitely in around that area

When I compare German turrets to German turrets and factor in their internal layouts and why they were as big as they were (without blindly citing Drach's nonsense), I can do those claims fairly confidently

Airpower could of course do significant damage to armored formations as a whole, but it tended not to be through the destruction of tanks, but rather of various supporting elements

#

Tactical airpower doesn't become really effective against tanks until the PGM revolution

#

Re tank on tank combat, while the prevalence of tank on tank combat is often overstated in the popular understanding of the war, it is worth noting that a part of that stems from the fact that tank on tank combat was legitimately very common in the Normandy campaign and the broader Western Front in 1944-45, due to the sheer density of armored forces employed by both sides
