According to those who survived, the captain ordered to self-sink the ship cause he didn't want the english to capture it or something like that
this is incredibly cope, the fact that the Germans did scuttle it does nothing to change the fact that the ship had been entirely disabled, and heavily flooded
Of course it changes nothing
Again, shellfire just takes a long time to sink battleships unless you get a lucky hit against a magazine, or the ship is poorly subdivided and lacking in stability (Kirishima)
Fun fact: when it capsized and began to sink, the propellers were still spinning
Well that's depend. I don't think all the ships could survive a 460mm shell, but of course there were ships that could but not without reporting severe damage
I remember the scuttling order being issued but never carried out because the ship had been so heavily ripped apart?
Nor does this anecdote prove anything about German steel quality, which varied from decent to quite poor, because the goobers at Krupp refused to change their test procedures from like the 1890s
You mean Cameron?
no, wreck analysis did suggest that scuttling charges did go off
I mean Bismarck certainly didn't survive, the ship was crippled very quickly in the battle
I didn't want to say that German steel is good quality, my arg in the beginning was that Bismarck had overall a better armor than Yamato
Bismarck most certainly did not
Still don't understand why people so heavily focus on whether she sink by gunfire or scuttling charge because either way is still massive German skill issue
A 460mm shell would likely do severe damages to her
Because people want to know what actually happened, I'd say
Yamato has twice the deck armor of Bismarck

And nearly a third more belt armor, and angled at 20 degrees
Unless someone can mount another expedition and somehow gain access to the armor belt that is burried under the sand then no one can come up with a correct answer
To think that if the crew didn't use their radio to communicate after the battle with Hood, things might have gone different
Because people want to believe bismarck survived till the end
While she was pretty much crippled and operationally dead at the start of the engagement
To think that she can somehow survive RN search and destroy operation is pure cope
It makes them feel good about their twisted beliefs
Only thing that could save Bismarck is to use her like Tirpitz as Fleet in being
If one is a wehraboo
and that would only save the ship until the allied heavies arrive in 44/45
True
at which point it would suffer the fate of the rest of the major German warships
Getting Tallboy to death
Operation crossroads, enhanced edition
a fair number of them just got plastered by normal bombs too
Bismarck: becomes a WW2 legend
That one swordfish that striked her rudder with a torpedo: am I a joke to you?!
I know but dmg from Tallboy isn't something you can write off
yep
Bismarck only become ww2 Legend bc of Hood freak accident
Literally
Didn't tallboys just punch clean through tirpitz and explode underwater?
And how much the Admiralty like to parade Hood around and never give her the Retrofit that she desperately need
yeah, if they didn't hit anything heavy inside the ship they just went straight through
Overpen
No armor is best armor
fuse delay was set too long
I can only imagine what one would do to a yamato
Besides the 203mm shells of Prinz Eugen started a fire onboard the Hood
pretty similar things to what they did to Tirpitz
Unless the crew are completely idiot and fire equipment aren't working, deck fire need a lot of time to reach the magazine bunk
True now that i think about it
Yes. Then Bismarck got the lucky shot
It was a fuse timer issue, not an overpen issue
Then why bring up the fire?
Only to point out that Bismarck didn't do the whole thing but that Prinz Eugen shells already did damages to the Hood
With Bismarck then concluding
That's true, but prinz eugen's damage to hood was pretty much inconsequential
Bismarck's hit would have sent her down with or without eugen's hit
Yes
I wonder if any other ship has ever scored a hit as lucky as bismarck's on hood
If we cound submarines then I'd say Albacore on Taihou
That one was probably more due to incompetence rather than luck
Let's say both
The hit was luck, but taihou sank because the crew had no clue on how to mend the damage
Yeah
Nice
Though I'm pretty sure it wasn't just the one torpedo
I 19 double kill on USS O'Brien and USS Wasp
Also Arl Royal torpedoing Terre Neuve causing 1400 kg worth of depth charges to explode off Dunkerque's hull
Right wrong vessel
Or i suppose, U-81 on Ark Royal
Turns out a lot of vessels get lucky
At other's expense
Tell that to DD’s hit by BB fire
[Overpen, 810 damage, the DD once more fades to invisiblity]
Rinse and repeat

Yep... that title and thumbnail is not a joke. A monumental video, both my first major collab and the first time I have appeared in person on my channel in a video.
I was originally planning on going for an hour and just uploading it. But I thought that the whole thing was just too good, so it went up unedited.
Special thanks to @Drachinifel ...

She left for the US at the end of the month and was in refit from late February to until about August/September, and then trials and work up until she final left for Mers-el-Kébir in October. She was assigned to Scapa Flow to work with the British home fleet and thus headed up there the next month, and served in this capacity until March 1944. It was then decided to send her to work with the British Eastern Fleet in the Indian Ocean. She arrived in April and served her first 'tour' in the region until September. She then returned to French North Africa and in October started a refit that lasted until late January 1945, and was sent back to the Eastern fleet in February, arriving in March. She served with the Eastern Fleet in the Indian Ocean until VJ Day.

Adolf Hitler was looking forward to D-Day. His plan was simple. Reinforce the western defences, launch a furious counterattack, and ‘throw the Allies back into the sea’. After that, he could turn his full strength against the Soviet Union and end the war. For Hitler, the outcome of this campaign would be decisive.

Is there much difference between the JS Atago class and USS Arleigh Burke class destroyers? They look extremely similar.
(If I slap the number 177 on the side of a USS Arleigh Burke model, could it pass off as JS Atago to an untrained eye?)
The superstructures of the two are different enough
It depends a bit on exactly which Burke you look at.
They were built at the same time as the original Flight IIA run, so that's probably the best comparison to make.
The Atago-class are overall larger, coming in at 10,000 tonnes full load to the 9,668t of a Flight IIA, with a similar propulsion system but slightly lower electrical power generation.
One of the most obvious external differences is that, much like the Kongo-class, the Japanese DDG features a larger deckhouse, and an extra deck level to expand command and control capabilities, as they are designed to act as a fleet flagship in a way the Flight IIA and earlier Burke's were not. This has the effect of raising the their bridge a deck over where it is on a Burke, as well as their SPY-1D(V) panels.
Otherwise, the Atago-class also use a domestic Japanese electronic warfare suite, use a domestic lightweight torpedo launch system, and only have a single aft helicopter for one MH-60, versus the Burke Flt IIA's two hangars.
The Atago-class has the same 96 VLS of a Burke Flt IIA, but has a somewhat different mix of missiles - the SM-2MR SAM, SM-3 (ABM), Type 07 (VLA equivalent), and, eventually, SM-6. A Flt IIA Burke can utilize ESSM, SM-2MR, SM-6, SM-3, Tomahawk, and VLA. An Atago also has two quadruple canister launchers for the Type 90 anti-ship missile, while the Burke Flt IIA do not carry canister launchers for AShMs.
based as fuck
#OTD in 1959, USS Barbero served as a branch post office by launching a Regulus missile carrying 3,000 pieces of mail. The mail was successfully delivered to Jacksonville, FL. The stunt was not about improving mail service. It was to demonstrate the accuracy of US missiles.
Atago doesn't carry ESSM?
None of the Japanese DDGs do
They focus on providing medium-range AAW for the escort flotillas and BMD work, and leave short range air defense work to the DDs, which do carry ESSM.

Germany lack of resource due to blockade and continuously fighting on all front completely sapped any advantage in manpower they have over France and UK, plus the fact that the Russian manage to hold on for 3yrs tie up a lot of German and Astro Hung in the East, while the quagmire that is the Isonzo Front further divert German attention.
Frankly, there are no definitive turning point, it is an combination of many event and factor that ultimately lead to German defeat.
Tho, if you want me to point to whom responsible for this then Wilhelm would bear the majority of blame.
For fuck up Bismarck carefully crafted relation with UK over petty Imperial ambition.
For destroying Alliance with Russia for a dying Empire because he feel like it.
Ok, maybe the Serbs also have the blame on this as well, how the fuck did they think killing a Crown Prince of Astro Hungary gonna help with their Independence?
Because no one knew about the 300+ secret alliances that were active at the time?
Even then, assassinate local Austrian official is one thing, killing the Crown Prince to send what message?
the Black Hand was afaik an extremely radical military secret society, and they absolutely do not want Austria to manage to pacify Serbians peacefullly through integration because they want all Serbians within Austria to be in the country Serbia proper
iirc Franz Ferdinand was a bit more reform-minded and willing to do some major changes, which would hinder their goal
So bloody fanatical want to reshape the world in the way they want
Same reasons as terrorists do
Dramatical events tends to attract attention for even people who has no desire of politics
When more people learn about the situation, they begin to learn it's politics too
Terrorism might actually be responsible for eventual freedom of Algeria from France for example
How does that happen?
See terrorists usually bet on a gamble
"I'm gonna make an horrifying act by expecting the punishment will be even more horrible from opposing nation"
If the response to the terrorist attack is harsher and longer by the victim nation, that victim nation slowly begins to lose its victim perceptive on globe
For example France's torture and collective punishment as answer to Algerian terrorism
The Battle of Philippeville, also known as the Philippeville massacre or the August Offensive was a series of raids launched on 20 August 1955 on various cities and towns of the Constantine region by FLN insurgents and armed mobs during the Algerian War between France and Algerian rebels. The raids, which mostly took the form of ethnic riots, re...

June 10, 1961 (62 years ago) the USSR General Staff presented a plan to transfer nuclear missiles to Cuba .
At a meeting of the Presidium of the Central Committee of the CPSU on June 10, 1962, a plan for an operation developed by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Soviet Union for the transfer and deployment of missiles in Cuba, codenamed “Anadyr,” was presented.
The operation was planned and led by Marshal of the Soviet Union Ivan Khristoforovich Bagramyan.
The plan called for the deployment of two types of ballistic missiles: the R-12, with a range of about 2,000 km, and the R-14, with a range twice that.
Both types of missiles were equipped with 1 Mt thermonuclear warheads.
Due to the particular haste, the plan was adopted without approval - implementation began immediately after receiving Castro’s consent

On June 8, 1966, the second prototype of the supersonic strategic bomber XB-70A Valkyrie, which was capable of reaching speeds equal to three Mach speeds, crashed in the United States.
During an unauthorized US Air Force promotional photo shoot for General Electric (which intended to photograph aircraft powered by its engines, including the Valkyrie), a Lockheed F-104N Starfighter, N813NA, was flown by NASA Chief Test Pilot Joseph Walker. , got into a wake from the wing of the XB-70A-2 (w/n 62-0207). The F-104, flying to the right of the Valkyrie, touched the lowered tip of the bomber's right wing with its wing, rolled over its fuselage, knocking off both fins, hit the left console and exploded .
Valkyrie continued to fly straight and level for another 16 seconds before the plane went into a tailspin. The XB-70 pilot, Alvin White, was able to eject in the final seconds before crashing. The landing of the capsule with a half-opened parachute was very rough, White received serious injuries and did not regain consciousness for three days. Joe Walker and XB-70 co-pilot US Air Force Major Carl Cross were killed.

They have planned the MarineDagen (Navy’s Day) to in 2027 open
Today is our Navy Day
Which is based on the day the Battle of Riachuelo was fought
But the term navy day is a recent change that started in 2023
Until them, it was only referred to
"Battle of the Riachuelo day"
Honestly the "Navy Day" should be on November 10th
On "Fleet Day"
Because on that day in 1822, the Brazilian flag was hoisted for the first time on a vessel
On this day 113 years ago, Royal Mail Steamship Olympic docked in Liverpool, England, preparing for its maiden voyage to New York.
Olivia Carlisle, the ship's commander and Anna's older sister, didn't care much for all the fanfare and tourists swarming the decks. Instead of mingling with visitors alongside her captain Edward John Smith (dubbed "The Millionaires' Captain" for his love of socializing), Olivia chose to spend today lounging in the cool summer breeze, and easing her tense mind with a cigarette.
It feel weird seeing green and gray Abrams now
It'd be like seeing a tan Sherman. You get so used to it looking a certain way, and then suddenly it's different and it just feels wrong.

least troublesome German industrial partner
New options mention buying Panther instead
Nah that wont happen
1- it doesn't exist yet
2- support variants arent even planned
The 2a8 deal included engineering vehicles, bridglelayers and stuff
Huh, am I missing something here? Italian trying to buy Leo2?
They can't find money to upgrade Ariete but can spare fund for Leo2?
Buying leo 2 is probably a better idea than upgrading the arietes
Ariete is bad
New Leo2s would have been better
Tho that seems dead ish
Both of those things are happening
Or well, supposed to
Now looking for another future MBT
The plan was to do an MLU on 125 C1 Ariete, in combination with the procurement of 132 Leopard 2A8IT and 140 Leopard 2-based support platforms to replace the old fleet.
This was coming in tandem with a decision to bulk up their tank battalions with an extra company and add a new battalion for a new 'heavy' mechanized brigade.
The 'C2' Ariete would replace the old Ariete in the existing formations, and then when the Leopard 2A8IT's would start to arrive they would be assigned to the armored battalions of the 132° Ariete Armored Brigade, replacing C2 Ariete that would then be transferred first to the armored battalion of the Garibaldi mechanized brigade, and then the remainder to the armored battalion of whichever existing mechanized brigade was to be upgraded.
In this way the armored strength of the Italian army was to go from 123 MBT's (of 200 total) to 216 tanks (of 257 total).
This would then be followed by the new next generation MBT, via an multinational program, which would displace the Leopard 2A8IT's to the mechanized brigades, and in the long term entirely replace them.
The MLU for the Ariete is still ongoing regardless and will at a bare minimum support (but only just) the existing operational strenght of the Italian army's armored battalions.
The issue in the medium to long term is sustaining that strength until whatever future tank program arrives, and the inability to expanded the armored forces without the interim solution of Leopard 2A8IT.
TBH I think the Leopard 2A8IT deal was already looking troubled since April.
A significant aspect of the build in Italy and integration of Italian systems into the tanks that would serve in the Italian army was not just for the sake of commonality of C2 for the tanks + communication with other Italian platforms, but also to better integrated Italian industry with whoever was going to partner for the ACIS program (for IFV)'s and in the long run, MGCS.
But France and Germany seem to have decided to stick with the strict workshare pillars of MGCS that locks everyone else out of significant input on the design, industrial content, workshare, etc.
Which sort of kills that whole approach.

only after rejecting them until Airbus fixed 75/100 deficiencies
What the hell went wrong with it anyways?
That doesn’t make it any less atrocious
the common claim is the problem came from there being many different versions due to how many customers there were
the problem being the crippling issues were with core systems which weren't effected
which is to say something in the core of the design is just "sickly" as some would say
contracting issues were by far the largest killer of the program
ADFs experience with the Taipan was such that, during the summer 2020 black summer fires, much of the fleet was unable to fly because the engines ingested so much smoke, and airbus wouldn't allow ADF to stockpile engine components, thus we had to wait for Airbus to ship new engines from Europe, however airbus had not expected high rates of atrition for their engines, in European flying conditions, rotors and landing gear were the most often replaced components, therefore they had almost no stockpile of engines and had to build new ones before shipping them, taking months to arrive
and other countries had similar issues, Belgium was briefly left without any flying helicopters because all of their taipans were down because Airbus was struggling to ship parts
and again, buyers werent allowed to have their own domestic stockpiles
Wait, Airbus don't modify their heli to customer specs?
Or Airbus just don't want their buyers to self maintainance?

At which point an R class' lack of deck armour is going to hurt them lol (I know Wiki says 4 in, but that was only for HMS Royal Oak around magazines as refitted, the rest had 2in + 1 in around magazine and 1.5 in + 1in around machinery)

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Tarakan_(1945)
The Battle of Tarakan was the first stage in the Borneo campaign of 1945. It began with an amphibious landing by Allied forces on 1 May, code-named Operation Oboe One; the Allied ground forces were drawn mainly from the Australian 26th Brigade, but included a small element of Netherlands East Indies personnel. The main objective of the landing w...

Worst defeats of each nation in ww2
Britain: Singapore
US: Hurgen Forest
USSR: Kiev 1941
France: Fall of France
China: Operation Ichi-Go
Canada: Dieppe
Germany: Operation Bagration
Italy: Greece
Japan: At sea Midway, on land Battle of Okinawa
Romania: Stalingrad
Hungary: Budapest offensive
Finland: Vyborg–Petrozavodsk offensive
Feel free to add or ask
Wouldn't Pearl Harbor be a much worse defeat than Hurgen Forest?
Losses and performance

As in?
I think the Vietnam war is probably the worst defeat for USA
It's of ww2
Oh ok
Pearl Harbor was a war crime. Japan attacked the US without declaring war. Also despite the losses it was a recoverable defeat
The Americans also preformed well for being taken by surprise
Albania: Italian invasion
For US I think this is worse

This part of it especially
The Battle of Bataan (Tagalog: Labanan sa Bataan; January 7 – April 9, 1942) was fought by the United States and the Philippine Commonwealth against Japan during World War II. The battle represented the most intense phase of the Japanese invasion of the Philippines during World War II. In January 1942, forces of the Imperial Japanese Army and Na...
That probably is worse.
In terms of War crimes yes

Same. Those ships aren't just ships. They're also the only grave that the crew ever got
Not only is what was happening grave robbery, but even worse it was the robbery of war graves.
Exactly

How come you just saw it
Admittedly, I don't really follow the war news that closely
Ah yes, the laser
Despite the fact that there have been clear signs that they might soon invade South Korea, when the North actually does in force on June 25th, 1950, it comes as a complete shock to the world. But is this a full invasion, or just cross border raids such as there were in 1949? And is there something more behind this? Stalin's Soviets? Mao's Chine...

Ah
I mean, it at least should be more mobile and road friendly than their CM series of tanks
well it's based on the cm-34

Turret too boxy
idk man what do you expect
MGS style turret
mgs turret gives them far less space to work with
But I guess watching how US abandon it in favor of manual loading make them prefer the old true and tried method
also introduces issues like feeding the ammo into the turret
I know MGS problems but the future is still gonna autoloader, it just the current systems are still too complex and take up too much space
Wasn't Centauro have an autoloading prototype turret? What system did they use?
Yeah, HITFACT Turret
talking about 105mm on wheels we finally got a pic of the Centuaro 2 with the 105 instead of the 120
even if this means that with the 105 you have the same number of rounds as the 120, 12 in the turret and a bunch in the back

its easier to feed the autoloader from the turret
than it is to feed it from the hull
MGS's autoloader was extremely problematic especially when you're working with a hull that wasn't purpose built for the task
With only 4s?

hey man thats a new record

That's extremely impressive when you think about it
they were set up for success with the war situation achieved and winning tactics learned in the F4F
back in mid-late 42, when the stakes were the highest and the enemy was at their strongest, the F4F was what was there to fight and probably deserves just a bit more credit than it gets
f4f has a 5.9:1 kill to loss in 42 and 6.9:1 for the whole war, so it certainly deserves more credit
imo going even stevens against mike tyson at his prime is way more impressive than scoring 19 wins in a row against Ronny down at the pub
Yet tojoboos be like: "muh zero, muh navy"
luckily most of the cultural consiousness has moved on from the f4f somehow being bad
Ima be real, Kantai Collection and COD vanguard are two things I watched, sat back and was like "Wtf did they even do research or are they pushing a narrative?"
by the time the F6F actually showed up to the fight (sept 1943) any hint of experience and skills in the IJN air arm was just completely gone. The kill record esp at phillipines is just sandbagging the dead horse. So yeah I think the F4F's combat record is way cooler.
Also a lot of experienced pilots were in China
The replenisher was
Not the autoloader
The magazine and loader aren't doing anything complicated. It's the replenisher being fixed in the hull while the magazine carousel rotates with the rest of the gun house that causes issues with running said replenisher
Don't most of the pilots fighting in China belong to the IJA though?
Also I think we shouldn't overcredit the F4F either; they bore up the brunt of the fighting in the early years but didn't really manage positive kill ratios until the Thach weave and early warning radar and fighter direction came along, iirc
Some ships like the Kaga were very active in the invasion of China
Some people like Tomonaga were freshly deployed to the Pacific after extended service in the Chinese theatre
as stated, 5.9 to 1 kill loss in 42
People apply the very wide brush of USAAF, RAF, and Dutch AF experience with the Japanese in 1942 to the USN as well
Which is why, political signalling otherwise, quite a few ruffled feathers when DDH-184 was named Kaga
F4F is just
Chonky
Didnt Sakai himself say he saw one really beaten up one still flying
Ye
He emptied all his 7.7 into one
iirc his quote was any zero that had been shot at the same way would have blown up and killed its pilot in a fireball
I had full confidence in my ability to destroy the Grumman and decided to finish off the enemy fighter with only my 7.7 mm machine guns. I turned the 20 mm cannon switch to the 'off' position and closed in. For some strange reason, even after I had poured about five or six hundred rounds of ammunition directly into the Grumman, the airplane did not fall, but kept on flying. I thought this very odd — it had never happened before — and closed the distance between the two airplanes until I could almost reach out and touch the Grumman. To my surprise, the Grumman's rudder and tail were torn to shreds, looking like an old torn piece of rag. With his plane in such condition, no wonder the pilot was unable to continue fighting! A Zero which had taken that many bullets would have been a ball of fire by now.
And then there's the case of a F4F beating a G4M to death with its landing gear
To be fair; when the Zero first entered service self-sealing fuel tanks weren't common on other planes either
They just forgor to update them later
I think its not forgor but rather can't
With the light airframe of Zero being the major reason of the plane's decent performance
Yeah, was joking
But yeah, they made the Zero too balanced that it was hard to upgrade without giving up its range and maneuverability
Adding self sealing fuel tanks was possible and they did do it. It just resulted in the Zero becoming unremarkable in range and didn't actually manage to solve the fragility.
Did it not solve the fragility?
And it only was done by the time the IJN was also trying to shove larger caliber machine guns into the airframe
Its just one part, afaik
Which just meant an overall downturn in performance
