ARLINGTON, Va. – The plan to upgrade the Navy’s fleet of Flight IIA Arleigh Burke guided-missile destroyers with new radars and electronic warfare suites is estimated to cost about $17 billion and take anywhere from a year and a half to two years to upgrade each warship, USNI News has learned. The unique appearance of Nelson and Rodney was never equalled in any other contemporary capital
ship – British or foreign. Many thought them extremely ugly, and they received derisory nicknames:
‘Rodol’ and ‘Nelsol’ (after oil tankers); ‘the pair of boots’ – the right and left boots of the Second
Battle Squadron – ‘the ugly sisters’ or ‘the Cherry Tree class’ (i.e., cut-down versions from
Washington Naval Treaty). Yet they were generally conceded to be the most impressive-looking
British battleships of their day, with a menacing appearance of fighting efficiency seldom, if ever,
equalled in any other battleship. One of her officers said of her, ‘I challenge anyone to stand on her
fo’c’s’le and not feel a definite tingle of pride and fear’ – certainly a general feeling that was
promulgated by the media.

#

It's very funny that the RN studies leading up to N3, G3, and ultimately Nelsol were extremely innovative and far thinking in design and concepts. But KGV nearly 20 years later is very conservative. (Admittedly, the 1920s and most of the 30s were very hard on the RN's design department. Huge staff losses to the point they couldn't even design more than one new big gun at a time.)

In the mid-nineteenth century paddy land productivity in Korea was about half of that in Japan.

Credit where credit is due though, Japan greatly increased output in Korea. However the main aim of this increase in output was not to the benefit of Koreans.

The Rice Production Enhancement Plan fixed Korea’s broken agricultural practices and greatly enhanced production. However per capita caloric input (which wasn’t good even before) stagnated and/or declined, while the practices of the Japanese and Collaborator Landlords became increasingly extractive, as well as landless serfs becoming a majority of the farming population.

frigid karma
#

Korea cannot into good neighbors

jagged monolith
#

I must economy

#

anyway.

#

Japan invested in Korea heavily; railway were constructed and factories built. An example of one is the Heungnam Fertilizer Factory.

#

This factory was the largest explosives and fertilizer factory in Joseon at the time.

#

It was a marvel of city planning and rapid development with an annual capacity of more than 40,000 tons, producing not just fertilizer but all sorts of industrial goods.

#

Or rather, it still is.

#

Where did the factory’s output go? It did not go into Korean farms. Often it did not even go into Japanese farms. It went into the machine of war. The factory was used as a vital industrial lynchpin for the Japanese invasion of China. It is enblematic of all the investments made into Korea by Japan; to feed the machine of War.

#

jagged monolith
#

A detour but a relevant one nonetheless; I would like to honor this man. A lone laborer who had the courage to stand fight against his masters who worked him and his fellows day and night in the Heungnam Fertilizer Factory.

He fought for the rights of the workers in the factory in opposition to the circling overlords within seeking profit. He fought for an independent Korea and for the rights of the people working within the industries of the occupation, headed a labor union and organized strikes.

#

His name was Isogaya Sueji, and he had the courage to do what was right when it would be going against his country. It is not so hard for a Korean to be a Korean independence activist, but it takes exceptional bravery and virtue for a Japanese to be one. This is why he is worth remembering; when Koreans would not fight for Korea, he, a Japanese, roused them to action.
