Let him enjoy his waifus no MLB, and instead give him tips on how to reach that MLB – that's way more helpful than judging.

Having started this game a little more than 4 months ago, I can confidently say that I would have felt very sorry if I hadn't followed this basic, hammered advice that is : "don't use non MLB ships because they are higher rarity, save your bulins for when you can fully MLB a ship that will help you progress". In my experience (started 7-8 months ago in October), when I came here I was like 'What? Why does everyone say MLB?'
But some kind soul sent me a link and told me to swap gear, and from there meta bosses (Yorktown and Resengbur only), Ops Siren, and 14-4 weren't a problem. I used a Hakuhou and Laffey 2 at 5 stars for ads, and an Enterprise fleet for bosses that I sometimes forget to swap gear on (my bad ).
What I'm saying is there are many ways to play and approach the game – meta, waifus, or a mix. But sometimes it does feel like a sect repeating the same meta advice over and over, without ofender.

if you're planning to actively play the game and are meeting oil troubles sometimes running 1* fleets are worth it since they cost the least oil. Also, all ships when max lbed and when reaching level 120 give stats to your entire roster, which is why keeping 1 copy of everything is recommended.

you don't HAVE to grind them out, it's just that some people (like me) prefer to grind for a copy of each one before moving on to the next world rather than just going for the most optimal grinding stages

it's all dependent on what you're playing azur lane for. i'm playing for the collection, so i play towards that. if you want to power up as fast as possible then you should aim to reach at least the start of w12 or even w13 before grinding
