Essex also doesn't have an augment, maybe you meant retrofit. You can do that instead of Saratoga. Better yet, check Merit shop every day to buy Eldridge for 20k merit, since Eldridge retrofit is extremely strong and would take priority over Essex if you get lucky enough to see her

from what i gathered the min maxing part is when i've maxxed out saint louis, then when i select her in catchup her excess prints will be converted into protocores?

you can use catchup to convert to protocre once they reach D30

How it works is any blueprints you get for ships after they are maxed can be converted into protocore. If you have the blueprints you can't use coins to level up until you've spent them, so you save the catchup to get the blueprints until after you've used coins to max them.
