I'm having trouble clearing Skynexus Tower: Top from the new event. My ships are all around level 70 and most of my gear is +6. Do I just need more levels/gear or could I be missing something else obvious as a new player?

well the last stage of the event is level 79-80 so you're already under leveled

if you're lacking limit breaks and gear it's not that suprising you're struggling

for now you'll just have to rely on levels and limit breaks to carry you as you slowly get better gear and enhance it\

assuminng you're using the reccomended starter fleet that is

I think you retired some ships (as I'm for RN faction) when it was active so you loose one of criteria. As for me I have 12 lvl 120 ships. so I lost or affinity or exp. As solution trying get it on another RN ships what I lost.
