1. Unicorn. She is the second or third best healer in game as-is, and becomes the best healer in game when you have the resources to do her retrofit. She will be the core of your mob fleet from now until endgame.
2. Portland. She is a solid tank and you want to retrofit her for the new-player missions anyway. She'll serve well as your tank (leftmost position of your front line) from now until you world 13 or so.
3. Laffey is an all-around solid ship who is worthwhile for your frontline. You will eventually swap her out for someone else, but again she's a fine choice from now until fairly late-game.
4. Helena is a decent ship for a new player, and has a skill that makes her a core component of many endgame fleets, so is worth raising.

Beyond that, everyone else is going to get replaced sooner or later, so

Rainbow bulins come from spec core, which you get from doing pretty much anything in-game and cap at 5k per month, UR event milestones, and cruise pass. You also get a free one from the bulin catchup which you can find in Events.
