The "Research Mode" toggle for Guild Tech is always off. When I attempt to change this, it always directs me back into the logistics tab, where I duly spend some resources to help the guild. However, when I go back to the Tech tab, it is still off. How am I supposed to make sure my contributions actually help the guild's tech progress?

Otherwise, I feel like I'm just spaffing resources at the wall, for nothing other than some Guild coins.

Depending on what your priority is for those fleets (trust/affection farming, level clearing, submarine mission, secretary mission, and eventually shipyard research goals) each fleet should have a purpose.

My advice is knowing what you want each fleet to do.
The fleets aren't a specific requirement for anything (you can change them at any time unless in combat), so they should be tools to achieve what you want.
Make each team what you want them to do.
I have 2 teams devoted to trust farming and secretary missions, 1 to submarine missions focusing on light carriers and destroyers, 2 teams focused on clearing the highest-level missions I can, and one more purely for trying out strategies with mixed levels of ships.
The teams are there for you to easily fall back on a particular selection of ships, IMO.

iirc, mostly that you get a lot more fights that you need to do with out of ammo, which reduces your damage output. your fleet will be pretty weak by the time you challenge the boss

all I can say is, 80% of content can be used by just about any group of ships that can farm W12.

It does, but having 1 properly max limit broken fleet slightly over-leveled matters more for beginning stages of campaign a lot more than having a boss fleet

The game gives you (I believe) 2% extra damage and 2% damage reduction for every difference in level you have with the enemy ship up to 25 levels on top of the stat difference levels give. May have gotten the numbers wrong

so splitting exp and splitting bulins is a bit worse than just focusing one fleet
