The game is a lot more generous to free folks than most mobile games. But being f2p does mean you don't have a lot of spare gems for buying rings for your wifus, or buying cool skins.

There is a guide in bot-spam that you can read for suggestions on how to most effectively spend your limited gems as a f2p person, but the short answer is dock space, dock space, and more dock space.
