As far as combat goes, they're no different from other ships.
They just have their own system for raising stats (uses some materials you primarily get from opsi instead of sacrificing extra gray ships), and their own system for leveling skills (they don't go into the academy, you spend some books to unlock a skill and then it goes up as you do stuff in game).

2*1k lb bomb fighters are good, craft them if you so desire. also the BiS option for 3 late campaign worlds (13, 13H and 15). consensus is that you should craft enough flapjacks for at least 1 entire fleet (3/4 flaps on mob and boss each, up to 6 for support cv fleet)

otherwise you can conserve your opsi resources (since they are rare and a lot of gears need the mats flapjack needs as well) and just open your uss tech boxes and enjoy a good amount of hellcats since these are good enough everywhere else.
