Mostly you don't worry about it, even if you're really slow about it, you'll get the xp in weeks, but you'll be spending months getting the blueprints for the ships anyway.

your goal is to keep coining pr4 while taking pr7 researches, and then after a ship is done you can get more protocores by using your catch-up
