conversion for a T2 Book is 1:6, so you get a T2 Book for 450 Skill XP using 6 T1 Books that total out to 900 Skill XP. For T3 conversion 1:4 or 1200:450 or 1200:1800

So yes you definitely do lose XP in the conversion while I'd generally recommend against conversion after a point in your time playing it's fine as long as you don't needlessly convert
