I'm not going to blame all your issues on Helena but the general rule is if vanguards are not dying, don't change anything and if they are dying, damage will just kill you even faster so there's no case for damage gear.

additionally, dont get the UR first bc you can get 1 copy from just free vouchers instead of spending precious points (for newbie) on them for a couple days faster. only do this if you join late and have to rush

the most reliable source of gold boxes will still be normal shop

im unaware of any way to actively farm gold boxes, they drop from higher end campaign stage boss nodes but the chance is fairly low. you shouldnt buy them unless at a steep (70%+) discount in shiranui's shop (even this is debatable) but a decent source for newbies would be the event shop (USS/eagle box > others)

anything that can be transformed in gearlab later can go to +10 if needed currently since all you lose is some coins

Certainly you should scrap dupes. For some gray/blue/purple ships it's worth keeping one copy around because you'll want to eventually run it to 120 for the +stat.
And if you really love your ship-harem, you'd buy enough dock space to keep them all around.
