Many of those ships are rubbish compared to current ones, but several of the old ones hold up really well -- Helena is still great, Enterprise is still great, unicorn is still the best healer, Sandy is still excellent in plane-hell maps.

And North Carolina still has a great bunnygirl skin...

Both are part of your front line (aka "vanguard"). Heavy cruisers will tend to have more HP and less evasion than light cruisers, will use bigger guns (bigger = more damage but slower firing), and tend to be less torp focused. The heavies also don't do anti-sub.
