it's really not something to worry about before you're actually setup to do research intensively

That's really it, just hit the rigging analysis anytime it comes up and you don't have a DR face as an alternative. Research is slow to give you the big stacks of prints you need.

Chap 14 takes some good ships at high level, with good gear.
So it'll take some time, because getting the good gear from research and the gear lab is a grind.

Sitting in 12 for a bit lets you level up more ships; at some point you'll be leveling up some ships you don't need for the tech bonuses. The +1 to a stat is tiny, but when you've done enough of them it does add up to some nice bonuses.
