so u need to kill them using one fleet essentially and if your fleet cant beat them then resting and trying again wont do much

second people recommend an overwhelming number of retrofits to newbies including a THIRD SR CV retrofit. All the free bp are gone. And indy in particular sucks without retrofit, not even good enough for crossfleet. At least Sara and Nelson are sort of usable.

assuming their damage isnt far off from each other and they dont fulfill additional roles
guns are pew pew meaning more linear dmg and better suited for preventing ship leaks and dealing with light armors
torps are bursty, have downtime but can be better suited for dealing with heavy and/or shielded targets depending on ur wave timings
for single target you just choose the one whose boss armortype/movement/gimmicks favors
but exceptions exist and most vanguards are mixed and arent completly skewed to one spectrum and then theres barrages
