Is the scythe not healing because of an interaction between Reaping and Undying, or is it just broken? I'm noticing that I'll do a bunch of overkill damage, but because of the Reaping modifier, it just sets their HP to 0 and I don't heal any

Hmm I think it’s because you can’t actually overkill when every hit is Reaping. Since the enemy’s max Hp is reduced every hit until it’s at 0 for the kill

Well this sure is an unexpected interaction lol

I guess you reap every hit, so when it dies it’s max hp is like -5, then undying tries to revive it but it’s less than 0 so it just sets the health to 0 and dies

Or maybe it revives first and then the reaping reduces the max hp

Either way it seems like reaping attacks make undying free points 🙂

i feel this version of the hunter sucks, when you get to monsters with 300 hp and you 8 damage a hit with a 2 cost weapon, and have no shields, and healing

I forgot how much I hated the new Malignancies. I generally don’t like playing with Malignancies because the game isn’t designed for it, but the new ones take the cake.

Now trying for high Malignancy is so much more painful. Back then, Rotting and Needy are out of the question, so people usually just go with Monstrous, Haunted, Toxic or Frostbite, Undying, and whatever the challenge-specific Malignance is, which was way more manageable.

Now we have Sorcery Amassing and Scarcity, which just toes the line of being doable while extremely annoying. Not to mention in a lot of cases, Scarcity locks out Monstrous, because your starter build probably cannot beat a +100% elite for a single card, so it’s one or the other.

…and I haven’t seen anyone even attempt Eternal Hunger, because it sounds like such a pain, even with Needy.

@wispy remnant yea it's precisely why I don't chase the highest scores each week - they inevitably play with these malignancies that just make the run tedious and otherwise not terribly fun to play imo. So I try to (temporarily) dominate the leaderboard early on, finding satisfaction with that, even though it's obligatory that I fall 15-30 spots by the end of the week. Speaking of which....

You would think rotting would be terrible this week, but tbh between only dealing reaping damage so not getting healed. Sorcery amassing to keep soul teather in hand until the kill. Reducing thd cool down on hungering weapon to 1 combat and the healing at campfires. It didn't feel too bad, mind you it was on normal. I would say my losing had more to do with low damage than rotting.

Here’s the thing: You’d need a MASSIVE amount of scaling to deal ONLY Reaping damage, and pretty much all of Hunter’s scaling involves healing in some way. You have Consume Ashes, you have the Darkness kit with Ferocious, and you have the one card that doesn’t need to scale - Majatome - but it’s very hard to get and also heals you.

Remember that Ethereal enemies lose 5 max HP every turn.

Also depending on whether you’re doing Sorcery Amassing or not, Rotting also locks you from one of the best cards for that - Hunter’s Mark.

I have a collection of Needy Hunger high scores. They are certainly doable with a bit of practice if the rest of the Challenge is not too hard. This challenge, though, is extremely unforgiving and one of the worst possible settings you can imagine for it.

I thought I was super clever by combining Deathdealers Weapon with contract killing and racking up ridiculous amounts of money in the early Cantos. Unfortunately, the merchant had absolutely nothing on offer that would help me with scaling well enough to beat Emberwyld. Then I chose the wrong opportunity when two were presented and got locked out of the Mythical Glade. At that point I just fed the character to the next best monster, it would have had no chance against Hydra anyway.

(I also got locked out of Heated Debate in Canto III. Screens with two opportunities are no fun. And yes, I know I can save scum these but I really don't want to go down that rabbit hole)

Kinda. You need either Siege of Shadows or Death of Divinity to fight Rathael the Slain. You need Siege of Shadows to fight Rathael the Reborn (but I don't expect many people to actually do this - just the die-hard challengers)

Rathael the Reborn is VERY difficult, so I expect it may not even be possible if you do 150+ malignancy percent, so I tried to give it enough bonus points to compensate for someone who tries to do it at a lower percent

I value consistency more than speed when it comes to how good a build is, and Reaver is disgustingly consistent, so much so that it’s basically a free win every time. If speed is taken into account then the best basic is either Greatbow or Greatsword.

What I liked about scythes is that haunted is basically free with it. devour vitality doesn't do anything with it though. sorcery amassing is nice to always have your total recall in hand and with avatar of thunder you've more than enough card draw later on... monstrous is ... well monstrous in the first cantos but I can imagine if you manage to get majatome early it's no big deal anymore... this challenge is quite diverse at least. lots of different approaches

A card that can deal base damage times 33 surely is not the worst card in the game. It is a great bailout that you just can't use very often. For difficulty spikes like Empowered Hydra it can be extremely useful.

This was a ridiculous slowscumming grind of a run that felt like more than 7 hours.

My original plan was to get a lot of totems, let them get me to 10000 Anger against an easy opponent, then use Cleave + Rune of Persistence to permanently save a one turn killer in my deck. Which does not work with Scythe - as I found out.

Fortunately for me there was a backup plan with Tempered Steel + Steelwall to fill my deck with turn 1 killers that could be launched from a memorized Hidden Pouch. Which required yet another slowscumming encounter

And because at that point I really felt petty I slowscummed a third time in the last Canto to convert a Dull Axe.

TL;DR Hiding behind stacks of totems is one of the many reasons why Hunters are strong af.

I used to like the game most of all for the quick gameplay and how you could just whip up a quick run in an hour and not get too invested. Then came my dysfunctional relationship with Needy Hunger and highscore attempts. 😅

I would not at all be opposed to speed as a scoring factor, similar to how we have an accuracy goal against bloated decks.

The main issue is that I don’t think the game timer is always accurate. I’ve had plenty of runs that sit in the background memory overnight and inflate the run duration. You’d have to be extra vigilant to exit to the main menu anytime you want to pause

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but could you please explain how it's possible to beat the game with no upgrades at all to any of the cards? 🙏 I'm pretty new to the game, and I can't see what could have been the winning strategy in this deck to be so successful. Especially to be able to beat the ultimate boss.

Hunter has a pretty insane combo that scales exponentially:

• Reckoning: with 100 Souls this means all Melee attacks 100% crit
• Brawler's Mark: whenever you Crit, Gain Armor equal to the dmg
• Spiked Plating: whenever you gain Armor, gains 1/2 as much Ferocious (which then makes your Crits do more dmg)

So very quickly your attacks start doing multiple thousands of dmg and you have thousands of armor and become unstoppable

just for fun try a run with no legendary cards, except for reckoning, and no darksteel plating, it will make it more challenging, and also no upgrades

also if want to win on impossible and get a score of 50000, help yourself, it wont hurt my feelings or anything. i dont really play this to be number one in points, I just enjoy the challenge. I really just try to pick cards that stay with the theme and generally avoid random cards just for the points.

i didnt feel like there is enough room to put everything, but the general idea was to use idolize and totem strike to quickly build up souls early on, for the most part i use brawlers mark to build shields and battle command to keep them, which is why i have so many make an attack cards, stand your ground to hit the enemy with built up shields. this setup requires no special talents...

Same strategy as before: Stall behind silly amounts of totems to deliver a huge Cleave, then apply Rune of Persistence to the second Basic Attack - only this time with Reaver where it actually works.

I am surprised, though, that the Godscar Wastes were not more popular among the top runs. With a good setup they are very survivable and a free Drakkan is a free Drakkan.

I was tempted to go there on occasion but I've never managed to get the watched talent in time... and thornwind is still new to me so I went there just for fun

There was also the option of letting Anima grow a bit, then harvest it back with Devour Vitality. Repeat a few times and you are entering Sanctum with near quadruple digit HP
