#Ethernet speeds slow.

Hi all, my ethernet speeds have dropped off recently. When testing, it'll hit around 8-900Mbps then steadily drop in increments of approximately 50Mbps till it get to around 250Mbps.

I have removed the WAN from my router and plugged it in directly to my PC and got the same results. I have speed test from my router, a 3rd party TP-Link AX6000 which shows around 7-800Mbps. It has the latest firmware, I updated due to this issue.

Upload speeds do the same, start at around 100Mbps and end up at around 40Mbps.

I have tried both the 2.5Gbe and 5Gbe on my mobo (asus rog crosshair x870e hero) same results.

Cables between router, 3rd party router and PC are brand new (bought due to this issue).

WiFi speeds are about what i'd expect without an antenna, 500Mbps give or take, my phone will get around 700Mbps.

Every now and again, the issue disappears and i'll be getting what I expect in speeds, around 1Gbps.

I intend to plug in another device to the LAN and test, that should confirm that it is an issue with my machine.

Assuming it is an issue with my machine, does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to fix the issue? All the drivers are up to date.

Is it only happening with your pc? What happens when you do a speed test on your mobile or something?

WiFi speeds are as i'd expect (much faster than the LAN)

I know you say the cables are new but have you tried a different cable

ebon palm
#

have you tried another port on your router (to plug the ethernet cable into)

What anti virus do you use? Sometimes it can block the network

#

I had my router plugged into an extension lead once that had some sort of built in firewall feature and that was also blocking my internet 😂

Bit defender. I've used it for a couple of years now, i'll shut it down and speed test now.

Can you reinstall the drivers?

they should work better for your specific hardware

# hexed night Results are the same.

If you’ve tried everything, only other things I can suggest is a hard reset of your router, make sure your router has the latest firmware install, or it’ll be a network card issue

i have a feeling it's more PC related because wi-fi was fine, other devices r fine, just LAN that's the issue

other than a speedtest, are your download speeds affected when downloading a large file?

hexed night
#

Ah, I probably should've mentioned this before... I tested large file transfer between my NAS and PC. Speeds were normal. I'm gonna double check that now, though. That's my bad guys, feels like it could be a clue.

download this, see if the speeds are decent (i.e. don't bug out)

#

it's just a giant png of noise

how do those results compare when they're all done on mobile (i.e. excluding ookla)

hexed night

5-600Mbps over WiFi give or take

#

do you have armoury crate installed

ebon palm
#

close it temporarily and make sure it isn't open in the background, then try the speedtest again

#

there have been previous reports that it causes internet throttling issues, which sounds similar to the issue you have with ethernet

i mean you could even try uninstalling it temporarily to see if that helps

i recommend restarting after uninstalling - just to make sure everything's stopped running

are the results still the same?

just looking at the specs of your motherboard... there are two different types of ethernet listed, so i assume you have two ports?

#

which one are you plugged into?

hexed night
#

Yes, 2.5Gbe and 5 Gbe. Results are them same on both. Plugged into the 5 just now

ebon palm
#

the 5G is realtek but the 2.5G is intel 😭

#

interesting choice to have two different brands

alright

Intel driver is the same as the one already installed.

ebon palm
#

you should do a network reset on your PC - it just restores everything network related to its original settings

hexed night
#

Although there are only 4 things under network adapters now, before there was 8-9.

I have a close friend that is a network engineer (NHS). He asked me if I had a program called "Game First" installed. I did and that was what was causing the issue. If there was a way to physically hurt software... that program would end up in a shallow grave. Anyway, thanks for your time, chaps. Much appreciated.
