#Possible HDD issue, Bad Clusters

Hi Everyone,

I've been having some issues with the HDD that came with my CP PC. A few times when i'm come back to my PC I've seen a message in the notification panel saying the PC needed to restart because there was an issue with one of the drives. Then when rebooting it would say it was repairing my D: drive and would then boot fine. For reference, this drive is just for file storage, no games or operating system etc.

I then noticed that when I tried to access the drive, my PC would lock up and I'd have to restart explorer to get my desktop back. Scanning for hardware changes in Device manager would also sometimes make the drive disappear entirely. I assumed maybe it was a loose connection or something so I removed the HDD and reinstalled it and now the drive appears fine, but seems to still freeze sometimes, but not as badly. Thought I'd run chkdsk to see if the drive had any issues.

Having run chkdsk with /r for the drive in question, I can see numerous

A disk read error occurredc0000483
The disk does not have enough space to replace bad clusters

popping up against various files on the drive. Is this sometimg repairable? or is this pointing toward there being a hardware issue with the drive?

Many thanks,
Raven

i can talk about extra space on SSD drives because i know a bit about that and it might be the same for HDDs
essentially on an SSD you'll get less space visible than advertised because when you 'overwrite' something on an SSD it'll just relocate it to a new 'sector' and that spare space is eventually used up (usually takes a long time, but defective drives can happen sooner)
i'm not sure if it's the same on HDD so you might have to do your own research if you want to find out
