Looking to buy a new PC, long term investment and quite beefy, link above for the current working theory. Just had a few concerns I was hoping someone could advise on:

  1. Looking to buy either a 4090 or 4080/4080 Super with a Ryzen 9 7950x / X3D CPU. I don't really want to buy liquid cooling as I anticipate it'll be a lot of maintenance and could easily go wrong so was looking at air cooling, but there don't seem to be many options, and they're all quite cheap. Do you think the selected Be Quiet cooler will be enough to keep the CPU cool considering all the stock platforms seem to come with AIOs and there are many more AIOs at higher price points?

  2. Weighing up between the Ryzen 9 7950X and 7950X3D. The 3D is more expensive with double the L3 Cache but the X has a higher base clock and is overclockable, is there expected to be much performance difference between the two, and if so which would be better?

  3. Definitely want a minimum of 32GB RAM, but is it much worth going above? I noticed that every stock PC on the site seems to start at 32GB, even the £5k PC, despite the options for 64GB and above. I'm aware there are diminishing returns above 32GB, but are there improvements worth having, and I've also heard that having too much RAM can actually be a negative as the RAM sits unused, is this expected at 32GB or 64GB, or only higher?

  4. The case comes with 3 120mm fans but has room for 4 more fans. Is it worth it or needed to have the additional fans given the PC will be on the higher end spec? How noisy would you expect the PC to be as a result of all the case fans + the CPU air cooler?

Thanks a lot for any and all support you're able to provide

And I will strongly recommend AIO for that kind of chip

Don't have a hard limit as such. Was originally looking to land somewhere in the £3k range, but am willing to go around £4k give or take if necessary. Don't think I'd be comfortable going towards £5k though

digital lark
#

So let's say between 3-4k

ripe echo

is there much maintenance/risk involved in AIO then? Or am I overthinking it?

digital lark
#

No need to change anything

ripe echo
#

Ah so no need to drain the coolant or anything

cprgbglitch :tada: Congrats @ripe echo, you levelled up to 1! :tada: cprgbglitch

ripe echo

basically same maintenance as you'd expect for air cooling

ah that's not too bad then. I'm not too experienced with liquid cooling. I've built my own systems in the past and actually work in IT, but I'm trying to avoid doing as much of my own IT at home if possible, of course I accept that means paying above the market value

digital lark
#

The above is top end high specs

#

Running everything on 4k ultra

ripe echo
#

is this a prebuilt or did you throw this together?

digital lark
#

All custom

ripe echo
#

So not worth going to 64 or 48GB RAM then?

#

I'd be looking to use at least 3 screens, maybe 4 in future

digital lark
#

That won't affect the ram

#

You can do but the price will increase

is the NZXT H9 case meant to be that good? My understanding was the reason the H5/H6 was so popular was due to the angled front case fans, which the H9 doesn't seem to have?

digital lark
#

4090 is beefy

ripe echo
digital lark
ripe echo
#

ah cool thanks, makes sense. And you wouldn't expect too much noise pollution from all the fans?

digital lark
#

Nah, not really

#

Just on heavy duty

ripe echo
#

Awesome, thanks for all your help

digital lark
#

Np

ripe echo
#

Oh one last question actually, the Corsair case fans, RAM, and AIO RGB are all controlled by Corsair software right? What about the NZXT RGB fans? And can I turn the RGB off completely?

hardy wyvernBOT
#

cprgbglitch :tada: Congrats @ripe echo, you levelled up to 2! :tada: cprgbglitch

digital lark
ripe echo
#

Lovely, thanks a lot

digital lark
#

That case doesn't come with any by default anyway, only the H6

ripe echo
#

ah, fair point, glad you spotted that!

digital lark
#

You might need to get in contact with them to buy 1 more fan for rear

ripe echo
#

I did wonder about that, seems you can't buy more than one set or a set of 7x fans

#

Would you leave a note with the order or open a ticket?

digital lark
#

Yeah, you can leave a note or call them/email them with your order number saying you want to buy extra QX120 fan

#

They will send you a separate link to pay for it

ripe echo
#

Awesome, thanks

digital lark
#

No probs

#

Enjoy the beast

ripe echo
#

Thanks, I've always been a competitive FPS player, but I think it's time to play some of the gorgeous SP games I never got round to

#

plus my PC is bricking itself anyway so it needs to go

digital lark
#

That one will run everything on ultra with no problem

#

But please don't have 1080p for it kekdog

#

Either 1440p or 4k

ripe echo
#

Would 1080 bottle neck or is it just a waste?

digital lark
#

Bottleneck hard the 4090

#

If you main one is 4k and rest 1080p it's fine

ripe echo
#

good to know, I only have a 1440 atm, but will be looking to get a 4k soon. But it's good to know not to run comp games in 1080 if I ever return to them

digital lark
#

Yeah, 1440p still bottleneck but not much

#

That card it's pure made for 4k gaming

ripe echo
#

just out of interest what kind of frames would you expect at 4k? Obvs as a comp player I'm used to high frames and I understand that is very much not the case for 4k gaming single player

digital lark
ripe echo
#

We talking 60, or like 120?

digital lark
#

Over 120

ripe echo
#

ah cool, thanks

digital lark
#

But I always limit my FPS to the monitor refresh rate

#

You won't need more than that

ripe echo
#

Yeah makes sense, I always go a little above just to compensate for drops (where it's open ended)

#

it's only comp games I aim for mad FPS and low res

digital lark
#

Yeah I do that, my monitor is 165 so I just limit it to 175 or so
