#Serious performance issues with new hardware and old games

Hi all, I recently got a brand new system from Cyberpower UK (4090, i7 13700KF) - I had to send the GPU back because it was faulty (it had weird stain on it), but I'm still getting very odd stuttering issues in old or less demanding games like DOOM (using source ports like DSDA) and DUSK.

Essentially, I have tried the following things:

  • running everything uncapped with no g-sync / v-sync - this leads to FPS running into the hundreds, sometimes thousands and produces screen tearing. This also puts an uncessary strain on my hardware and power consumption.
  • enabling g-sync, v-sync in Nvidia CP, and capping frame rate at -3 below my monitor's refresh rate (as suggested by blur busters) - frame rates will wobble between 130 and 141 fps and produce noticeable stutter.
  • turning off g-sync and just running v-sync and a frame rate cap - produces wildly inconsistent frame times and stutters to an unplayable level.

Modern games like RE:4 Remake and Cyberpunk play as expected and do not drop frames. However, I also thoroughly enjoy playing older titles too and thought this PC wouldn't have an issue with them at all.

All drivers are up to date, all software is using the latest versions. I've disabled background processes and monitored CPU usage in HWInfo64. Temps are absolutely fine in all situations. I've stress tested both the GPU and the CPU using benchmarking software and all is behaving as it should.

Basically, I'm at a total loss here. My old PC (3070, i7 9700KF) could run these games at a flawless 141 fps with a completely flat frame time graph using the aforementioned g-sync / v-sync / fps cap.

I am seriously considering returning this PC as I only got it a week ago (Sat 21st) and am still within the 'cooling off' period.

Here are some videos to demonstrate the issue.

  1. just v-sync (no g-sync) - completely unplayable:

  1. completely uncapped - playable, but still inconsistent:

Please help!

Any ideas?

It’s hard to tell from the video, but I’m assuming it’s making the game unplayable. It maybe worth doing a DDU just in case. In the mean time, it’s definitely worth emailing them however as it’s the weekend, they won’t respond

#

Sometimes, older games don’t work as well with new tech but it’s really rare. Cyberpower maybe able to suggest some other tests

Thanks for your time. I’ve done a DDU twice already, so I don’t think that’s the issue.

#

I’ll call them on Monday afternoon but, at this stage, I’m feeling that I’ve tried almost everything I can think of. I really want to keep this PC as it’s excellent in every area, except the fact that I can’t play old games (which is a deal breaker for me sadly).

#

I wonder if it’s something to do with windows 11? As I mentioned in the OP, my older PC on win 10 (3070, i7 9700) ran these games without it issue.

Some engines just aren't upkept and simply fade away as tech gets newer and newer

#

and the fact that newer, more demanding titles, such as Cyberpunk, as you say, play as expected, this is making me think it's simply these older games are not designed to run on such powerful hardware

#

You can always chance your luck with Compatibility Mode and see what you get as a result

Hi all, just a quick update from me. I've completely fixed the issue with a windows reinstall. Not sure what happened along the way, but perhaps a driver didn't attach properly. Who knows. Any way, for posterity, just reinstall windows! It seems to have fixed my issues at any rate.

PCs. A right Royal pain 😂 most cases it’s just running through the usual. Reseat components, DDU, Windows Install. Glad it’s fixed it for you 👍

Hey, I should also add that I found the true culprit - icue. I have 6 fans, and aio, ram and a keyboard that all occupy system resources via icue.

#

Essentially, this was absolutely murdering my fps in a lot of games

#

I’m looking at completely disabling the icue software to alleviate this issue

#

However, icue controls my fan cooling since all fans are plugged into a hub.

#

Open to suggestions, but honestly, Corsair has cost me two weekends of trouble shooting at this point and I’m quite irritated lol

It’s not apparently. I set the curve and based it on the CPU sensor, but the icue link hub doesn’t recognise that. The only option is to rely on the three presets Corsair supplies, and even the “quiet” one is quite audible.
