We love a self made chippy
Amazing! how about that wooden top?? also built yourself?? or did u get it done by somebody cause im looking for one like that
yeah it's a very basic structure, for the frame it's just some cheapy box steel with very crappy spot welding on the joints (which you can probably see) and then for the top I got some oak boards from a local builders merchant which I cut down to size, glued together, sanded (for many hours) and stained. The whole thing cost me about 70 quid in materials and 50 quid of that was just the wood. You can do it cheaper with different wood of course.
Thank you! did u use any plans or just from scratch??
main thing you need to measure is length, width, height. get the steel/metal frame to the height you want, minus maybe 10-15mm, then add the 10mm-15mm surface on top and get it sanded down and a nice lick of wax/polish
Appreciate it, ive built cupboards from scratch before so shouldnt have a problem, was more on about the metal work for the frame more than the countertop as never worked with metal
if you're comfortable with welding, this is a low level, but acceptable guide
i know good table legs can very comfortably reach the £250-£300 mark, so could save yourself like... £200 easy
anytime bud
you dont have to use metal for the frame you can also go for wood. The width of your desk and the type of wood you use will need a bit more 'design thinking' though so it can support the weight properly.
Another alternative (which I've used for DIY shelving units) is scaffolding pipe. There are many local and online merchants that sell these 'cut to size' and you don't have to weld if you buy the different connectors, they also have flat shaped mounting connectors to secure your top on which is handy. Google is your friend, also check out Etsy for ideas (I eyeballed one I liked and tried to copy it)
for example something like this (you can get nicer feet for these)
