Are their any tips or advice for scripting I should know about before going into it, I've already learned some of the basics and im trying my best to learn more.

Don't rush

#

Practice making small little scripts

Feel free to use free models, but when you're first learning how to script try to avoid using other people's module-script libraries to the best of your abilities and just impliment it from scratch

#

Also, disable Roblox Studio's AI code auto-generator (the autocompleter is fine though). The best way to learn is to write the code out by hand

#

Leanring from videos is fine, but make sure they're kinda recent. A good rule of thumb is to avoid or fact-check videos that are older than 3 years unless they talk about concepts

#

For instance, take a video documenting how to move parts to be next to each other. Odds are if they're older than 3 years, they'll be using Model:SetPirmaryPartCFrame() to move things. If you look at Roblox's documentation, SetPrimaryPartCFrame() is depreciated.

But if the video is 3+ years old and is talking about things like how to organize your roblox code or something like that, you're probably fine

#

Another quick thing about videos: Don't follow them word for word, and try to understand what exactly they're doing to achieve... whatever they're doing. Completely avoid any video "Guides" that just tell you to copy/paste their code without explaing how it works first-- that's a good way to get stuck in tutorial hell

#

Project-wise, you should do things that you're interested in, but also try to limit the project to use 3 or less concepts that are completely new to you. Trying to learn too many things at once is a great way to get overwhelmed, quit, and want to die

#

If you ever come across issues or weird errors, you can always come here or to #📜︱scripting if it's a quick question.

#

HOWEVER

#

If I were you, I'd try to make an account and browse the Roblox Dev Forum First

#

In fact, I recommend that you sacrifice a weekend to just exploring the roblox dev forum in general

#

You'd have to scroll for... six to eight hours, but becoming a member to the Roblox Dev Forum is probably one of the best things you can do for yourself resource-wise

#

Plenty of smart people reside on the Dev Forum, so asking for help there is probably better than asking for help here

#

After you get good enough at scripting, you should also try to work on free commissions to improve your scripting abilities

#

If that's a little much, then just try to help other people with their questions either here or on the dev forum

#

People usually have a variety of problems, and solving them might lead you to learning more about scripting and how to do it better

#

But... avoid the people who have no intrest in asking for help and just want someone to work on their game for free :p. Those guys are annoying...

#

If you want my personal ranking, I'd...

  1. Make small games/PoC to learn different aspects of scripting
  2. Help people on some kind of forum
  3. Put out your services for free
  4. Make a larger game you're more interested in making
4.5: Actually put yourself for hire to save up funds needed to create/advertise your dream game (or just cash out via DevEx, it's up to you)

I'm out of ideas to write, so good luck
